Here are the early returns from the Canespace 2010 Legends of The Fall (LOF) voting. Keep voting, the polls are open until April 15!
So far a total of 65 votes have been counted and voters have been true to the competition with picks ranging all across the spectrum of UM players on both offense and defense. Several picks along the offensive and defensive lines have been registered as well as some surprise players at the skill positions. Let's take a closer look at which players are leading the vote count so far are:
Offense: Leading the way in a dead heat on offense is WR Travis "The Blur" Benjamin (9), RB Damien "The Beast" Berry (9) and RB Lamar "The Truth" Miller (9). Hurricanes WR LaRon "Big" Byrd tallied 6 votes while surprising Spring star WR Kendal "Smooth" Thompkins trailed the leaders with 5 votes.
Where is Mike "Smiley" James (seen above C with OL Jermaine Johnson at L and OL Brandon Washington at R who also received votes) you ask? Only three votes so far.
Even FB, uh I mean WR, Thearon "The Hulk" Collier received two votes (even if they were from the same voter in violation of the official Canespace LOF rules). Things that make you go hmmmmmmmm.
Defense: The defensive voting is being dominated so far by S Aravious "Ray Ray" Armstrong with 11 votes. Trailing #26 are DE Adawale "Mojo" Ojomo (8), S Vaughn "Miami Vice" Telemaque (8) and LB Colin "Mad Irishman" McCarthy (6) and maybe surprsingly DT Micanor Regis "Philbin"(6).
Where are DE Marcus "First Round" Robinson and LB Sean "Sleepy" Spence (seen above at L with DE Olivier Vernon, CB Brandon Mchee and DT Curtis Porter during NSD 2009) you ask? Trailing the leaders with three and four votes respectively.
CB Demarcus Van Dyke (DVD) also received three votes in the early going as some UM fans are expecting better things from him opposite CB Brandon Harris in the Hurricanes secondary.

UM freshman Ray Ray Armstrong wears the same number as the late Sean Taylor, and at least one play Saturday showed comparisons might not be that far off.
BY SUSAN MILLER DEGNAN
[email protected]
The newest version of No. 26, otherwise known as Ray Ray Armstrong, introduced himself to the nation Saturday with a hit that will go down in UM lore.
Quarterback Jacory Harris had just thrown his second interception in four pass attempts, and Oklahoma, up 7-0, had the ball on its own 7-yard line midway through the first quarter. Running back DeMarco Murray took the handoff and breezed 7 yards through the UM defense, hurdling a diving Vaughn Telemaque as if he were a mere inconvenience.
Then came visions of the late Sean Taylor -- the new No. 26 impersonating a solid steel wall.
Wham!
As Armstrong, a 6-4, 220-pound safety, used his forearms to send Murray sprawling on his back, the shocked home crowd shrieked, ``Oooooh!''
Armstrong leaped up and down, pounded the air and straddled Murray, who slowly rose from his hands and knees.
It was the first of Armstrong's seven tackles for the night in his most significant playing time of the young season. And it served as a calling card to future opponents.
``Yeah, it feels pretty good knowing that I got a couple good shots on them boys,'' said Armstrong, a true freshman out of Sanford Seminole High School. ``I wanted to make a statement, knowing I'm not the regular freshman.''
That would be UM quarterback Harris' Northwestern.
``That's my boy,'' Harris said Saturday. ``Ray Ray is my boy. He's somebody I've been knowing since he was in high school, when he beat up on my high school. He's just real close to me, so of course I'm happy when he makes big plays.''
Armstrong asked for No. 26, last worn by safety Anthony Reddick, but immortalized by former UM safety Taylor.
``He was my favorite player and has been for a long time,'' Armstrong said at CanesFest this summer. But he said he's not interested in trying to be another Taylor.
``I'm here to play for Ray Ray and the Hurricanes,'' he said. ``I'm not trying to live up to anybody's circumstances. I'm going to do better than the person before me.''

Miami (Florida)
The rivalry with the University of Miami Hurricanes began in 1955 and through the 70s was dominated by Notre Dame. Traditionally, it was the season-ending game for the Irish in odd-numbered years, as they sought to end each season at a warm-weather site. Miami holds the distinction of being the only team to shut out Notre Dame during the Ara Parseghian (0-0 in 1965), Gerry Faust (20-0 in 1983) and Lou Holtz (24-0 in 1987) eras. During the 1980s, this once-docile rivalry became ferocious. Both teams were national contenders in the latter part of the decade, and both teams cost each other at least one national championship. Hostilities were fueled when the Hurricanes routed the Irish in the 1985 season finale, 58-7, with Miami widely accused of running up the score in the second half. The rivalry gained national attention and both teams played their most famous games from 1988-1990, dubbed the "Catholics vs. Convicts" contests. The first was won by the Irish, 31-30, with Miami ending the Notre Dame record 23-game winning streak the following year, 27-10. The rivalry ended after the Irish crushed #2 Miami's hopes for a repeat national championship with a 29-20 victory in South Bend. The two squads have not met since, with Notre Dame holding a 15-7-1 edge.

Opening paragraph of "Solar", by Ewan McCarthy. Thought you'd appreciate this:
He belonged to that class of men—vaguely unprepossessing, often bald, short, fat, clever—who were unaccountably attractive to
certain beautiful women. Or he believed he was, and thinking seemed to make it so. And it helped that some women believed he was a
genius in need of rescue.

Did anyone ever find out which game is Homecoming?
Posted by: roachcane77 | April 01, 2010 at 10:14 PM
It would not hurt my feelings one bit if we never played ND or the University of Fla. EVER AGAIN. Both teams have the most ignorant fans than any other NCAA College Football team. It was alright for ND to beat up on any team by 70 points or more. ARA P. never questioned it. Fla pounded teams with high relentless un needed scoring all the time and nothing is ever said. However let Miami beat either of these 2 teams by more than 10 points and there is all H*&^ breaking out. It is time to just say no to each of these teams. We can prove our greatness by playing other more deserving NCAA teams. This is my point of view thanks.
