Your University of Miami baseball team rolled North up the Florida Turnpike and then West across I-10 on Friday to take on the Florida State Seminoles in Trailernasty, oops I mean Tallahassee, in an Atlantic Coast Conference weekend series showdown for State bragging rights.
With UM Head Coach Jim Morris at the wheel the Hurricanes would not be denied an opening night victory at Dick Howser Stadium even if if meant bringing in seven, count them seven, pitchers to seal the victory for Miami. Whatever it takes to get the job done Miami will most certainly do.
As the Seminoles warmed up they looked nervous before facing their ACC rival from South Florida. Their players tried to relieve their tension with a simple game of toss (hot potato) but it was to no avail. FSU appeared fearful from the start. You could see it in their eyes and sense it in their body language.
Maybe it was the fact that many Miami fans had found their way to Tallahasse like these lovely young ladies below that we found in the stands. They would make any man nervous, don't you think?
Yet still it would take starter Chris Hernandez and six UM relievers to combine to win the game and allow the ninth ranked Hurricanes to earn a come-from-behind, 6-5 victory over the sixth ranked Seminoles on Friday night in front of over 5,000 fans in the State Capitol.
The Hurricanes trailed 4-1 after four innings, but would go on to score two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take a lead that Miami's bullpen would hold on to. UM reliever Jerad Grundy got the win while Killian Cougar Danny Miranda got the save, his fourth of the season.
Miami improved their season record to 29-9 overall and 15-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Hurricanes are on a big winning streak and have won 14th of their last 16 games. The dreaded 'Noles dropped to 29-10 and 12-7 in the ACC with the loss.
UM starter Chris Hernandez allowed four runs on four hits while walking three and striking out six in 3 1/3 innings. He was followed by UM reliever EJ Echinosa before Grundy, Whaley, Robinson and "The Wulf Man" turned in scoreless relief innings before Miranda came in and read the Seminoles their rights to start the ninth inning.
Early in the game FSU took the lead in the third on a solo shot to left by McGee before adding two more runs on a pair of bases-loaded wild pitches by Encinosa in the fourth to go up 4-1. But UM's Perez quickly brought Miami back to within one run in the top of the fifth with his two-run shot to left-center.
After Miami gained the lead in the sixth, FSU loaded the bases in the sixth and seventh innings but was unable to plate any runs. In the seventh, a line shot in the right-center gap was run down and caught against the wall by Zeke "Beep-Beep" DeVoss.
The Road Runner saved the lead and kept all three FSU runners from scoring.
Game two of the three game set will be played Saturday at 1 p.m. and will be televised live on FS Florida. Lefty Eric "Easy E" Erickson (4-1, 2.51 ERA) will start for Miami while FSU will throw southpaw Brian Busch (4-0, 2.55 ERA).

86 - nice pics, esp. the bust of Dick Howser and the bully pic
It's always a great feeling when the other team has bases loaded and they're too inept to get a run across .... that happened to FSU twice tonight? Even better
Suck it Noles

Morning Canes fans.....I am a gator hater. However, I will still shocked that Major Wright was not drafted in the first round. That dude seems like a stud.
Does anyone know why scouts don't see him as a first round talent?
Posted by: ChicagoCane | April 23, 2010 at 08:05 AM
It's because he snubbed the Canes during his hs recruitment, and now he is paying the price!!!
Karma beyotch! karma! haha

Correct me if i'm wrong here, is it me or did i not see a single USC player get drafted in the first round, didn't they have a 1st round streak going also???

Good stuff Six
Mike Williams would be better in the 5th value wise but if you dont got one, you take him when you can. 4th isn't too high if you like the kid.
Brian Price is a nice player. I think the Bucs did a good job going DT two times. Hopefully you guys can forget about DTs for the next decade.
Unlike the Dolphins who have depth at DE and Guard so they draft a DE (maybe he'll be a nose, maybe) and a guard with their first three picks. If this is what BPA looks like I should have shut my mouth years ago.

Jimmy Graham, TE Rd. 3 Pk 27 (91) San Diego Chargers
was my pick
Saints selected Miami (FL) TE Jimmy Graham with the No. 95 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Off by four picks. I got Darryl Sharpton going late Rd.4 to the Colts. Lets see if I just got lucky or if there are any skillz involved.

OK. Just read that the 'phins are moving Randy Starks to nose tackle. Don't know if I like the move but at least they are giving him a solid shot at it this far in advance. Also the player is on board with it. Ran into a guy up here who knows Starks from his high school days and says that he is a freakish athlete, kept calling him a "knucklehead" haha. I thought Starks could've been to the Pro Bowl last year, he came up with some very important big plays for us.
On new Dolphin guard John Jerry, from the SS:
Interestingly, NFLDraftScout.com spoke of shoulder issues during Jerry’s college career, but he just told us on a conference call he didn’t know what that was about. He did admit, however, to some hemorrhoids (Yikes!)
Don't know if I'd admit to that with reporters!

Absolutely. Football reasons its good but off field its great. I think we'll see Jimmy with Drew Brees a lot helping out some folks in NO who need a hand. With everything Jimmys' been threw I don't think he's going to hoard his money or time.

U ALL would have LOVED being there at the baseball game.
I walk in, I look for the largest group of ORANGE and GREEN and settle in down the LF line. I'm sitting there and it all just happens.
First I interview with the reporter from WVUM 90.5 FM. He asks about Canespace and the Canes coverage. We chat on camera and he gets the Canespace card. I have no idea where or when it shows up?
So I sit down and Taylor Wulf's Mom introduces herself. We laugh and joke. She gets the usual Canespace treatment just like several other people in the crowd. Here son comes in to the game and she is just chewing her nails off. LITERALLY. He does his job and the Canes win.
She introduces me to Zeke Devoss's dad. I had met him at the UCF game but didn't know who he was really. He got the Canespace treatment also.
I'm in like Flynn...and then the Canes WIN!

FROM THE LAST BLOG:
Today, I sat with Josh Johnson and we were watching film on different players that hadn't been drafted yet. We started off with WRs b/c we knew the Bucs were going to take one or maybe two. We watched film on:
Arrelious Benn (Illinois) 2nd Rd. Bucs
Erick Decker (Minnesota) 3rd Rd. Denver
Jordan Shipley (Texas) 3rd Rd. Bengals
Golden Tate (Leprechauns) 2nd Rd. Seattle
Damian Williams (USC) 3rd Rd. Titans
Demaryius Thomas (GTech) 1st Rd. Broncos
Carlton Mitchell (USF) undrafted so far
Mike Williams (Syracuse) undrafted so far
It was interesting to see how he breaks down film, what he's looking for in the defense, how he sees the WRs the way they catch it and run their routes, etc.
He brought up a lot of things. Which WRs in that list catch the ball more with their body than with their hands - and how TOwens is notorious for catching the ball with his body, in his chest. Watching that film with him, it's true just how many of them catch it with their body/chest instead of with their hands then snapping it into their body/side
The kid Mike Williams from Syracuse, he goes after the damn ball when it's in the air. It's his and he's fighting for it. I know Josh was happy when the Bucs picked Arrelious Benn, after picking 2 straight DTackles. I'd be happy if the Bucs got Williams in the 4th Round - they gave away their 5th Round pick to move up 3 spots and snag Benn.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS CENTRAL NEWSPAPER
Jimmy Graham eager to play alongside fellow Hurricane Jeremy Shockey with New Orleans Saints
By James Varney,
The Times-Picayune
April 24, 2010, 6:31AM
Miami Hurricanes tight end Jimmy Graham said he modeled his approach to college football on his predecessor, New Orleans Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey.
Jimmy GrahamNow he will get the chance to do the same thing during his professional career.
The Saints selected Graham in the third round of the NFL draft -- the 95th overall pick -- Friday night, but unlike the team's second-round pick -- Southern California offensive tackle Charles Brown -- there was a relationship between Graham and the Saints.
For one thing, he says the Saints are his favorite team. For another, he attended Super Bowl XLIV in a Saints hat and, prior to that remarkable night against the Colts, was a guest at a Super Bowl practice of New Orleans. Afterward, he approached Shockey and introduced himself.
"He knew who I was and told me he'd been watching me all year," Graham said after his selection. "He said if I keep working hard and stick with it, the sky is the ceiling. To me, that was incredible."
....................................
Still, the move represented something of a departure for a Saints brain trust that, as a general rule, values college production more than potential. In this case, Saints Coach Sean Payton -- who described himself as initially skeptical when the team's scouts started praising Graham -- said the package already is in place.
"People will use the term, 'upside,' but I liked all the measurables I saw," Payton said, noting a visit Graham paid with the Saints prior to the draft only added to his attractiveness.
"It often happens in every draft that there is a guy you're attached to, but this was one player everyone felt pretty good about."
As he has so often, Payton returned to his favorite draft theme -- drafting players of whom the coaching staff has a clear vision of the player's role. In that respect, Payton said he expects dividends to come sooner with Graham rather than later.
"There's plenty of snaps, and a lot of stuff we do formationally," Payton said. "You hope the learning curve is quicker than slow, and it's our job as coaches to get them ready."
Graham joins a team with Shockey and backup David Thomas as Nos. 1 and 2 on the depth chart at tight end. Payton described that situation as "beneficial" for a young player. Graham described it as perfect.
After all, he'll get to understudy with his master.

Sharpton was pick #102
Posted by: Aqua | April 24, 2010 at 10:22 AM
cut AB#11... Yeah, had to let go... but ya still got me! LOL
Sorry for the rant last night, but I said what I had to say.
The pick... IMO, anything past 1st and 2nd round lumps together and the number slot becomes faded but where they end up is the important thing...
Same as, whats more important, the money or what team drafts him and where is he going?
Aside from the bragging rights of the top 5 and the millions (soon to be changed in 2011)that goes with being #1 thru #5... I would rather get on a team ranked in the top 5, rather then being chosen on a team that is bottom feeding in the NFL... So being chosen anywhere in the latter pecking order, regardless of what round you are chosen, is the key, for me.

I was off by about 27 picks on Sharpton. Good for him, Houstone has some linemen in front who'll clear the paths for him to stick the ballcarrier. At least I got the round right:)

Six was praising him... Mike Williams.

The problem with the better teams taking you is the talent on the roster, harder to make the team. It all evens out somewhat but you need every break you can get. Great article from La. Cat5!
And great article on the baseball game SOUP!
Looks like a great time and game!

I am not a fan of all this booing at the draft. Really like you guys really know anything about the guy taken in the 5th round? Come on quite the booing!

They booed Dan Marino canechic... It's what Jets fans do:)

Raiders having a pretty good draft on paper... Bruce Campbell in the 4th, some mocks had the raiders taking him in the 1st with the 8th overall.

Raiders love the speed... Jacoby Ford in black and silver.

The Skeletor must of turned over the drafting reigns to someone else
Posted by: Sebastian | April 24, 2010 at 10:51 AM
Skeletor is lying next to Walt Disney and they thaw him out every now and then for media appearances.
Posted by: DZ8 | April 24, 2010 at 10:55 AM
I'm no Pete Carrol fan but can't Mays read draft boards? No one is surprised he slid out of the first round. In fact he probably ended up in a good spot with Singletary and that scheme.
Posted by: DZ8 | April 24, 2010 at 11:00 AM
They play in such a weak division, with just a solid QB they would be right there
Posted by: Sebastian | April 24, 2010 at 11:00 AM
Meant quit
and yes they booed Ray Lewis too.
My son said they are all skinny computer geeks and the guys they are booing could take them down with one hand.
Posted by: canechic | April 24, 2010 at 11:06 AM
Those two O linemen will help them. Gores value in fantasy circles has gone up. Maturation from Crabtree continued production from Davis. They might have something.
