The Saint Thomas University (STU) baseball team arrived at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field on a wing and a prayer Tuesday night with hopes of knocking off your University of Miami Hurricanes.
The St. Thomas catcher can clearly be seen here (above) kneeling and asking for a blessing just before the game started. Someone must have been listening as early on the upstart Bobcats managed to take a four run first inning lead. STU then proceeded to fight the good fight throughout the night before falling to the bigger, stronger bully from the 305.
As the game wore on it became clear that Saint Thomas' prayers for an unlikely victory on this pleasent, balmy and breezy late April night in Coral Gables would go unanswered. Several unfounded rumors around the ballpark centered around an alleged voodoo spell cast from the left field picnic area near the STU bull pen that eventually would lead to the Bobcats' undoing.
One unverified and likely unreliable witness mumbled over and over: "I got this, I got this." And so it would come to pass.
As far as Miami's run production is was all about the long ball. Now you know that chicks dig the long ball and the Hurricanes did not disappoint with Zeke "Beep Beep" DeVoss, Scott "Breakin' The" Lawson, Ryan Perry "Mason" and Michael "I Ain't No" Broad went yard for Miami.
As Miami's four championship flags flew in the steady breeze over the stadium, UM fans could feel the power of past success fill the air with confidence and the smell of victory. Or was that the black beans and rice? Not sure about that one, but either way it worked for the Hurricanes.
UM pitcher Eric "Bob Marley And The" Whaley started the game and picked up his fourth win on the season. The win was Miami's 30th victory of the season as the Hurricanes improved 30-11 overall. After struggling in early season with mid-week games Miami picked up their sixth straight such game.
The Road Runner (DeVoss) led the Hurricanes going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and the home run that proved to be the game-winner. Lawson went 2-for-3, scored two runs and added four RBI including his three-run bomb as Canes fans in the stands like Jerry (affectionately known as "The Old Guy") and Kelly (affectionately known as "Kelly") below went crazy!
Whaley (4-1) lasted four innings and allowed six runs on nine hits. The back-up band was led by Travis "Not Steve" Miller, Sam "Not Smokey" Robinson, Taylor "Howlin" Wulf and closer Iden "Jesus of" Nazarrio on drums. Wulf and Nazario each played one solo, I mean inning, but it was Nazario's ninth inning masterpiece that earned his first save of the season.
The Hurricanes would win the game by the final tally of 9-6 and set up Wednesday's match-up with the South Florida Bulls in lovely Coral Gables.
Please join us for some exciting times as we run with, and then over, the Bulls.
And if that doesn't get you going, maybe a full moon over Miami and little voodoo spell will?

University of Washington president Mark A. Emmert became the NCAA's new chief executive on Tuesday, ending the search that began in November.
Emmert succeeds Myles Brand, who died last September from pancreatic cancer. Brand was the first ex-university president to lead college sports' largest governing body and the first chief executive to die in office. Jim Isch has served as interim president since Sept. 22 and will continue to do so for the next several months.
Emmert will begin his duties Nov. 1. NCAA officials said Emmert was given a five-year contract.
It was a surprise choice.
The early front-runners were University of Hartford president Walter Harrison, Georgia president Michael Adams and NCAA executive Bernard Franklin.
But the NCAA decided to go in a different direction, opting for a man they thought could deliver the organization's message effectively in any venue.
Executive committee chairman Ed Ray, the Oregon president who knew Emmert from his days at Washington, said the initial list of nearly 100 candidates was whittled to 32, then to a handful of finalists who were interviewed Tuesday afternoon.
At about 5 p.m. central time, Ray called Emmert and offered him the job.
Emmert became Washington's 30th president in June 2004. He is one of the highest-paid public college presidents in the nation. He came to Seattle from LSU, where he was chancellor.

From Barry Jackson today:
• Scouts already are buzzing about UM's 2011 draft class. Among seniors, Mel Kiper ranks Allen Bailey first among defensive ends; Leonard Hankerson third among receivers; Colin McCarthy fourth among outside linebackers and left tackle Orlando Franklin fifth among guards. . . .

The last couple of weeks Kohl's kicking, punting and snapping camps have been in a couple of the nation's most talented regions. The 2011 and 2012 classes are shaping up to be a strong grouping of talented specialists. The Southeastern part of the country seems to be in the lead, in terms of top-notch talent. A few of the Kohl's camps in that region this year have produced the most talented prospects we have seen over the last couple of years. The hang times and distances have been aided by nice spring tailwinds, but the talent is there for many of these prospects.
Florida
Mauro Bondi is arguably the nation's best kicking/punting combo athlete.
The Sunshine State has a bunch of solid specialists with college ability. Mauro Bondi, a 2011 kicker/punter from Boca Raton, Fla., consistently hit kickoffs over 4.1 seconds and punts over 4.5 seconds in the air. He hit one punt in camp competition that had over five seconds of hang time. His natural coordination and leg speed are very impressive. His field goals off the ground are solid, but can improve with a slightly slower rotation on his kicks. He should be an early Division I offer.
Carolinas
The Carolinas will be loaded this year with three national-level specialists. Brad Pinion, a 2012 kicker/punter from Charlotte, N.C., may have the most talent out of anyone in the 2012 class. The 6-foot-5 specialist hit 80-yard kickoffs and 4.9 hang times on punts. His field goals have also improved off the ground, got tremendous height on his kicks and he should be an early SEC offer in years to come.
Trevor Austin, a 2011 kicker/punter from Shelby, N.C., showed he is a legitimate college punter as well as kicker. He already was rated high with Kohl's as a kicker, but now will be rated high as a punter. Austin won the punting competition with a punt that had 4.84 seconds of hang time. He also proved again that he is one of the nation's best on field goals and kickoffs.
Caleb Patterson, a 2012 kicker from Lyman, S.C., showed Division I talent as well. The ball exploded off his foot on field goals and punts. He is one of the more refined kickers we have seen all year and he is only a sophomore.

4 Wolfpack players face drug charges
By AARON BEARD, AP Sports Writer
Apr 26, 4:44 pm EDT
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)—Four North Carolina State football players face drug charges after police found marijuana in their off-campus apartment.
Raleigh police say offensive tackle Jake Vermiglio and defensive tackles Markus Kuhn and J.R. Sweezy each were charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a dwelling for the use of controlled substances.
All-Atlantic Coast Conference tight end George Bryan was charged with maintaining a dwelling for the use of controlled substances.
All charges are misdemeanors. The players were cited along with a fifth person early Saturday.
Coach Tom O’Brien says in a statement that he is aware of the situation and “appropriate action will be taken.”

Atta boy Jerry, he's pulling a chick like Kelly ... mainly b/c of the white shorts and white belt
That is pimp right there, straight up Crockett
The stands on the home side are barren, maybe b/c you'd need an SPF 2,000 lotion to put on at that time of day. Talk about dangerous, a ball fouled off into those stands at that time of day, it's like playing blindfolded Russian Roulette

86 - those are great pics, like a mini-cathedral outside
What's up with that pic of the Canes out there with the mini-Canes during the National Anthem?
Roadrunner out in CF only has one mini-Cane with him and that kid is standing about 10 feet away from him while Pelaez out in LF has a freakin tribe of mini-Canes surrounding him

Sarasota, CaneSaw & anyone else in the 813/727/941 - I'm going to be on the ESPN station here co-hosting during drive time
So if you're bored, dial in for a few minutes
If you're going to call, just mention somewhere that you're a Cane fan and I'll know. I already know what CaneSaw sounds like and his name, Sarasota, if you're bored and do call in, just mention Canes and I'll know it's you as well
Just can't say "hey Six, it's (fill in the blank) from Canespace", ha, b/c that sounds hokey
Posted by: Six | April 28, 2010 at 12:49 PM
Six is that station heard here in the Orlando area?
Posted by: francis w | April 28, 2010 at 01:00 PM
Six, not certain that this was exactly the same thing, but many times they have little leaguers go in uniform, they get to meet the player, he signs a ball or their glove, and they get to stand out there during the intros. I am stunned they did that on a weeknight though, don't these kids have homework?

You might have to turn up the volume on the player, next to where it says "PLAY"

Ungar - ya, usually when I've seen it, it's been during a weekend game
I'm just still surprised Roadrunner only had 1 gromit out there with him and Pelaez had a tribe of them
Do they not like Roadrunner? What's up with that
Maybe he raced them out there, they got tired about halfway and they just said screw it, we're going to stand out here with Pelaez

Sebastian - i like your style ... don't think I'm not going to be bringing up Aaron Hernandez with the sticky icky and also being drafted below a guy who played only one year of college football from The "U"
I also have it on good authority from a phone call last night that a certain QB who claimed he was a virgin, absolutely isn't and the deed took place during the time he was somewhere for a certain ceremony
And you'd never guess who it was with

From the previous blog, I am gonna try to keep up with the list, and adjust for my personal biases:
MyRank ( Rank ) Name - Sport - Comment
50 ( 38 ) Tony La Russa - Baseball - Sorry, I just don't see it. He wouldn't even make my Top 50 Florida Baseball Players, let alone Top 50 overall athletes.
49 ( 42 ) Ray Bellamy - Football - A great story, but not the star that the others were.
48 ( 41 ) Lou Piniella - Baseball - More famous as a manager than as a player, Florida career more mediocre.
47 ( 49 ) Willie Galimore - Football - Career tragically cut short. Will likely impact Sean Taylor as well.
46 ( 47 ) Rick Casares - Football - Nice career, 11 years for a RB is impressive
45 ( 48 ) Harold Carmichael - Football - Something decent out of Philadelphia? First time since the Declaration of Independence.
44 ( 45 ) Danny Wuerffel - Football - Gator that dodged playing the Canes on his way to a title.
43 ( 50 ) Tim Tebow - Football - I would place Tebow over Wuerffel, different styles, but more of an overall athlete.
42 ( 44 ) Devin Hester - Football - Canes dominance on a declining team.
41 ( 40 ) Leroy Butler III - Football - Nice second round pick for the Packers.
40 ( 43 ) Anthony Carter - Football - The beginning of the end of Don Shula.
39 ( 39 ) Bob Hayes - Football - Here is an underrated transformer of football.
38 ( 37 ) Tommie Frazier Jr - Football - I dislike rewarding players for beating the Canes, But the point was made.
37 ( 46 ) Vince Coleman - Baseball - Here is an underrated transformer of baseball.
36 ( 36 ) Sean Taylor - Football - Deserved the chance to do more. His killers need some prison justice delivered.
I am SOOOOO tempted to make my own list, but I want to just sit back and enjoy this unfolding list instead....

Native - word
You mean you're going to see the hometown team that has the best record in all of MLB ... leads the AL with 121 Runs and has a .323 batting average with RISP?
Rays gotta cool off Pennington and Rosales from Oakland. Those cats are raking at the plate
Going to be a nice pitchers duel tonight with Shields going for the Rays and Dallas Braden going for the A's
I loved that Braden started yelling at Alex Rodriguez for running across the mound on his way back to 1st base
Shieldsey is 3-1 in 8 starts against the A's
Braden is 3-1 in 5 starts against the Rays

Six, in little league, the kids don't want to be in the outfield (since the coaches use that for their worst players and the kids pick up on that). So, if only seven show up, they will BEG to be the shortstop.
PLUS (and this is only a guess) the parents of the players likely would BEG for their kid to be in camera range if there was an infield spot open.
So, any team less than nine showing up would have the outfield be the last spot to fill, IMO.
Of course, that doesn't explain the seven left fielders and only two third basemen, so I might be wrong on that... 8-)
Posted by: Ungar | April 28, 2010 at 01:34 PM
I was hoping to listen yesterday but I didnt get the chance to.
I was going to do my usual Rays talk. Then bring the Gator hate like only I can and ask what happened to all the Gator fans that defended Babik, saying he was innocent

Six, in little league, the kids don't want to be in the outfield (since the coaches use that for their worst players
So that's why I was in right field all those years??? !
Coach:
"Gonzo you are left handed and have a great arm we need you to stand out in right field right next the foul line, and up against the fence.
Just stay there and save your arm, don't waste energy trying to catch anything to your right"
