One week from today the University of Miami will hold their annual meet and greet between UM football players and coaches and their fans.
In an effort to build support for the team, sell season tickets and generate excitement about the upcoming 2010 season, the BankUnited CanesFest will be held on April 17 from 9 AM to Noon at Sun Life Stadium.
So if you live anywhere in South Florida we highly recommend that you attend this always fun and family friendly event. The players are very accessible in a relaxed environment which makes them readily available for autographs and photos. Last year at the event we had the opportunity to meet and take photos with several players.
Above is blogger AngryCane with fellow Califonia crusier Vaughn Telemaque and below is blogger OcalaCane with his possee of JoJo Nicholas (L), Daryl Sharpton (R) and guaranteed future first round NFLU pick Marcus Robinson (C).
As always, admission is free but parking will be $50. Just kidding, parking is FREE, but the large cups of orange and green Kool Aid will cost extra.
A Select-A-Seat opportunity will be offered during the event that will give fans that haven't yet purchased their 2010 season tickets the chance to choose their seats from all available stadium inventories.
Existing season tickets holders will also be able to select from alternative open seats and upgrade or improve their location should they wish to relocate.
Fans (like Canespacers 86Cane (L), The Rhode Island Canes Crew (C top), Canechic and daughter Nicole (C) and Aqua (R) seeb below) will have a chance to ask questions to a panel of select UM football players from the offense, defense and special teams.
This Q&A session will be hosted by WQAM's Joe Zagacki beginning at 11 AM. There will also be interactive inflatable games, locker room tours, Kool Aid baths and more.
Season tickets start at $99 in the upper deck and $199 in the lower bowl and are on sale now by calling 1-800-GO-CANES or via the web at www.HurricaneSports.com.

I hear ya on Boise
I like how the media always points out Boise's marque game of the year, like Oregon or the one relatively good opponent they will face all year.
Then you don't hear anything about them till the end of the season when they have raked up 15,000 yards passing against Midwest high school teams.
Posted by: solarcane | April 10, 2010 at 11:12 AM
The top ten with most RECEPTIONS were:
1. Clark, Ind.
2. Witten, Dal.
3. Gonzalez, Atl.
4. Gates, S.D.
5. Davis, S.F.
6. KII, T.B.
7. H. Miller, Pit.
8. Celek, Phi.
9. Z. Miller, Oak.
10. Olsen, Chi.
Indianapolis is a chance with Clark probably a couple years away from another big payday.
Dallas has Witten and Martellus Bennett so I would say no.
Atlanta is a chance as Gonzalez is old.
San Diego is a chance as Gates is getting old.
No to San Francisco, Vernon Davis is young.
No to Tampa Bay as KII is young and paid for.
No to Pittsburgh as they like more complete TEs and Jimmy ain't blocking anyone for a little while.
Maybe to Philadelphia as I'm sure Reid would love to creat some mismatches with Jimmy Graham and they only have Celek who is dependable but not really a game changer,
Oakland is crazy. They have a good young TE in Zach Miller but Oakland is notz. For Jimmys' sake I hope not.
Olsen in Chicago might get traded and Mike Martz has his tight ends as small tackles. I say no.
So after that review Atlanta looks very promising. Philadelphia, Indianapolis, San Diego are other possibilities. IMO of course;)

U don't think UCF becomes the new USF, eventually join a major conference and then surpass the Bulls?
Largest student body in FL, 5th largest nationally, located in Central Florida, no other market competition NFL of college?
U don't think there is enough talent in FL for them to be good, really good in the next 5-10 years if they can start winning and have a HC with Whip's record for producing offense?

UCF in the Bowl Championship Series
Who is in the BCS? Who is not in the BCS? Maybe the most frequently asked question in college football since the inception of this popular postseason format in 1998.
Fans and followers of UCF Football should know the Knights are in the Bowl Championship Series.
Starting in 2006 and running through the 2009 season, the BCS, an arrangement of five bowl games, is managed by the commissioners of the 11 NCAA Division I-A conferences, the director of athletics at the University of Notre Dame, and representatives of the bowl organizations. Among the inclusive conferences is Conference USA, of which UCF is a proud member.
How can UCF get into a BCS bowl game then? The Knights can qualify for a BCS game if either: A. Finishes in the top 12 of the final BCS Standings, or, B. Ranked in the top 16 of the final BCS Standings and its ranking in the final BCS Standings is higher than that of a champion of a conference that has an annual automatic berth in one of the BCS bowls.
To put into perspective, Notre Dame would automatically qualify for a BCS bowl if it is in the top eight of the final BCS Standings, whereas, a team from Conference USA would automatically qualify, thus having greater access, if it were among the top 16 teams in the final BCS Standings.

Any school in the state of Florida has the potential to be a powerhouse, some more than others. The question is does Whipple want to do the heavy lifitng that is neccesary at the begining of a rise to dominance/relevance?
Posted by: DZ8 | April 10, 2010 at 11:21 AM
DZ8...The top 12 in catches AND/OR yards reads something like this from the NFL web site:
1. Gonzalez, Chiefs 96
2. Whitten, Cowboys 81
3. Cooley, Redskins 83
4. Clark, Colts 77
5. Daniels, Texans 70
6. Gates, Chargers 60
7. Miller, Raiders 56
8. Denver
9. Seattle
10. Minnesaota
11. New Orleans
12. Chicago

Whipple has a big ego.
Big egos don't stand in the background forever.
Whipple isn't gonna pass Randy as head coach at Miami
Whipple isn't going to be here too much longer after Jacory leaves, they might both end up on the same NFL team together.
Miami was the smallest of potatoes before Schnell got here.

Heck ya they're are others... like I said Atl., Phi., Ind., maybe even Minnesota. Kids got talent and immense potential so even if a team is set at TE right now they take him and immediately have a seam breaking field stretcher. In a couple of years they have an all around tight end.
and solar... I'm just asking you to think a little before you go choosing your LOF. For the good of the team my man, the good of the team. :)

No I don't. You mean UCF might rise up like the almighty Bulls? LOL!
I don't think Whipple left the NFL and came to Miami to jump ship for small potatoes like UCF. He won't have to either. When our offense blows the doors off some teams this year he'll be able to go just about wherever he wants.
Someone said Whipple has a big ego and big egos don't stand in the background for very long. You think that big ego wants to go try his luck at UCF when bigger fish will be knocking on the door? Hell Hurtt got a better gig by going to Louisville than Whipple would if he chose UCF.
You don't send a Norm Chow pedigree OC to UCF to hope and see if he can turn them into a powerhouse.

ESPN’s Top 25
1 Alabama
2 Ohio State
3 Boise State
4 Texas
5 Virginia Tech
6 TCU
7 Florida
8 Iowa
9 Nebraska
10 Oregon
11 Wisconsin
12 Oklahoma
13 Miami
14 LSU
15 USC
16 Pittsburgh
17 Georgia Tech
18 Arkansas
19 Penn State
20 Oregon State
21 Florida State
22 Cincinnati
23 Georgia
24 Stanford
25 North Carolina
We play: #2 Ohio State, #5 Virginia Tech, #16 Pittsburgh, #17 Georgia Tech, #21 Florida State, and #25 North Carolina
That is 6 games vs ranked opponents based on preseason. By season’s end you may see USF and/or Clemson ranked as well. So that is 50% or more of our schedule against ranked opponents. IF we can stay healthy, we’ll probably be favored in all our games except Ohio State and VTech. We got a SHOT this year to REALLY makes some SERIOUS noise on the national scene. But we HAVE to stay healthy at critical positions (QB and OL on Offense and LB and CB on Defense)

bg thayts true. you can also forget UNC being ranked when we play them, after LSU defeats them right off the get go on national tv.

Where do they play? Neutral field or at UNC I would put my money on them. They still have a chance even @ LSU... IMO, of course.
Posted by: DZ8 | April 10, 2010 at 01:10 PM
In 16 years as a lower tier head coach Whipple pulled off 1, that's one small college NC.
I think a few people forget BC passed on him as a HC just a little while back.
You don't think he would love to be a real HC at a real school?
The kool aid is in early this year

Does anyone know anything about this kid?
Daniel Lasco | RB
Scouts Grade
Hometown The Woodlands, TX
High School The Woodlands High School
Height 6'1"
Weight 190 lbs.
Daniel Lasco (The Woodlands, Texas): Lasco may be the fastest straight-line back in the state with a burst that he has shown since his freshman year in the playoffs against Spring Westfield. Lasco is at his best when making one cut and accelerating vertically. Four programs appear to have distanced themselves from the others. Miami, TCU, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State are reportedly the front-runners. He has been on a pair of unofficial visits to Miami and has walked away very impressed each time.
Lasco has offers from Miami, TCU, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Texas Tech, Houston, Baylor and Mississippi State among others. He enters his senior season with nearly 3,000 career rushing yards.

What UCF needs is some offensive help
Their Defense wasn't all that bad, had more playmakers on it than the O did
The O did enough to beat a Houston team though that was putting Arena Football type stats up on people
All UCF really had was Brynn Harvey - guy ran for almost 1,200 yards
Brett Hodges didn't exactly have Hankie, Aldarius, Byrd, Pimp, Benjamin, Streeter, KT, Graham, Epps to throw to either
You get a good offensive mind in there at UCF, get a couple of playmakers and improve the defense just a little bit - that's not a bad team
That Legoland aluminum stadium they have will be collapse from all the students going nuts, by jumpin up/down from the scoring if that happens
Posted by: Six | April 10, 2010 at 01:19 PM
dz they will be on espn for their spring game in a minute
check out their qb woes. except for a fantastic defense they have absolutely no strength.

I've previously made the comment that Whipple mus interview like Will Ferrel and John C. Reilly in Step Brothers.
The guy has been up for numerous jobs at not very marquee D1 schools and keeps getting turned down. I think he is a good offensive mind, not great, who you figure would've had a chance by now. Sometimes its who knows you in the head coaching/admin of football world and maybe he doesn't have as manny buddies in high places.
Don't know for sure but I think next year will be his last at The U. And I won't be shocked if he goes right up the street to UCF.
Posted by: DZ8 | April 10, 2010 at 01:23 PM
UCF got some talent coming in - all them Central dudes including Godfrey the QB.
Posted by: Esteban | April 10, 2010 at 01:26 PM
I can't watch it now, maybe it'll be replayed later. I know thay are unproven at QB and WR. Will research what their O line looks like. What is your take on their O line solar?
I think their defense is better than LSUs offense and their offense will be able to be a little productive against LSUs defense. It'll be a battle but this is pretty much how Butch likes his teams.
We shall see. Haven't done too much research yet, just my gut. I could do a 180 by the time the season actually gets here.
Posted by: DZ8 | April 10, 2010 at 01:26 PM
UCF was 48th in the nation overall in Total Defense last year
Ahead of teams like GTech, Cincinnati, Auburn, California, Mich State, Washington, Michigan, Notre Dame, Arkansas, Florida State
They were also 4th in the nation in Rushing Defense and 6th in the nation in Sacks
Their Pass Defense wasn't that great, way down at 113th .... it's odd b/c they were ranked so high in Sacks
Posted by: Six | April 10, 2010 at 01:28 PM

I think Whipple is a good to very good OC.
I think he is a hard worker and would want the challenge of HC at a D1 school.
It seems people judge what others would do by using their own ambition as a guide.
If you would only accept a real good job that is running itself and not want the challenge of creating something, then you would say ____________ would never do that.
Thankfully ther are coaches out there that take programs and turn them into contenders, rather than say, I'm not up to it.
Posted by: solarcane | April 10, 2010 at 01:29 PM
and before Brynn Harvey they had Kevin Smith so they do know how to run the ball. The stage is being set up there. They need another coach to take it to the next level.
I think USF has that coach now in Skip Holtz.

The Offense is UCFs problem
They were 87th in the nation overall in Total Offense last year
But still, ahead of teams like UCLA, Iowa, Arizona State, Nebraska, LSU
So let's see, UCF in Total Offense last year was ranked higher than:
Norm Chow (UCLA)
Ken O'Keefe (Iowa)
Dennis Erickson/Noel Mazzone (Ariz State)
Shawn Watson (Nebraska)
Les Miles/Gary Crowton (LSU)
That's somewhat embarrassing for those big name programs that can basically pull any athlete that they want, from anywhere
