Your University of Miami Hurricanes wandered out West on Wednesday to play another mid-week baseball game. The ninth ranked Hurricanes paid a visit to the lovely city of Fort Myers, Florida to take on Florida Gulf Coast University in a classic David vs. Goliath showdown at sundown.
OK, so it was only the West coast of Florida but still it counts for something for these adventurous Hurricanes who have already played in Tampa, Orlando, Jupiter and Boca Raton. They will also travel to Tallahassee in April (4/23-25) to face the Florida State Seminoles. This Miami team knows Florida!
In a game labled as a "Battle Of The Birds" the team with the Fighting Ibis mascot beat the FGCU Eagles by the score of 9-0 in a game that was never in doubt. Miami scored one run in the first, two in the second, two more in the fifth and four runs in the ninth inning to seal the deal for the good guys.
The game was played at Hammond Stadium the Spring training home of the Minnesota Twins. It is a beautiful facility with all the amenities any fan could ask for, like beer. Seriously, the place is very nice and a great place to catch a game. A large crowd of maybe 2,500 people, about half Miami and half FGCU fans, filled the facility to about 50% capacity for the mid-week college game.
UM starter and former closer David Gutierrez was masterful on the mound and had a perfect game working through seven innings before he was removed for some strange reason by UM Head Coach Jim Morris. Since struggling as the Canes closer to open the season and recently moving to starter, Gutierrez has excelled in his new role.
So in the eigth in came UM reliever Eric Whaley to start the inning. Many Hurricane fans in the crowd seemed confused and concerned about Morris' move at the time and they would later prove to be correct in their assumptions. Whaley proceeded to load the bases by walking one batter, hitting another and then surrendering the first hit of the night to the Eagles as the home town crowd and mascot stood and cheered.
Whaley would get a strikeout to end the threat and the inning to preserve the shutout for the Hurricanes. New UM closer Daniel Miranda would later come in a close the game out for Miami in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning.
Miami had ten hits on the night and the combination of Scott Lawson and Yasmani Grandal went 4-9 at the plate and drove in five runs.
The Hurricanes now stand at 24-9 on the season and return home for a weekend series with ACC rival North Carolina at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
fighting ibis, all I can say is that to think race is an issue is totally off base. Coker got big money cause he won a NC! If you think everytime something doesnt go a certain way because of race then you are only handicaping your own horizons. People are treated poorly usually for a myriad of reasons rather than just the color of their skin. Take that giant ass chip off your shoulder it only weighs you down.

The Babe doesnt really have sports takes. They are more like rants for a few minutes until another caller calls the show and shes off on that subject then more commercials
She doesnt understand what the true pain it is being a fan down here then reaching the top only to see the ride is hauling azz back down that hill and into Culverville

CSM I'll send u a rough draft sometime in the next few days unless u just wanted the general idea?? let me know
Posted by: DrewZ2 | April 15, 2010 at 05:27 PM
BTW...in case you were wondering CSM has been promoted. CSM, along with DZ8, Solar and Six, have volunteered and agreed to help us pass the time during the slow Summer months by helping coordinate content on the blog.
Solar and Six will have their weekly Summer long series: "Fifty Fabulous Floridians". It will post evert Monday with Solar's picks and then be followed up on Wednesday night with Six's picks.
DZ8 (and Esteban too) is focusing on the NFL Draft past, present and future.
CaneSawMassacre (CSM) is going to tackle recruiting and keep us up to date with the latest news and try to score some interviews from prospective recruits and their coaches.
As you know I will be covering UM baseball and have weekly features on that as well. I will be in Tallahassee in late April for the FSU series and have a report on Canes vs Noles from the 850.
If there are any others out there like DrewZ2 who want to contribute an article NOW through July is the time. Time to get busy!

forgot to add that the U should def. pay Randy his money. They are trying to cheap out on a guy that truly loves the U. The U has already given alot to Randy, but in return Randy has given his all to the U.
I dont think this is race related in the least, but I do think the administration needs to step up and pay Randy on a long term deal, win or loose, Randy will always do his best and do what he thinks is best for his university that he loves as much as any cane fan.
Randy has already made great strides in changing the culture back to true U, and large scale success is just around the corner, but this is his first head coaching job, and he will make some missteps that will set him back, but these will only serve to be learning experiences and make him a better coach in the long run.

To me if U waited this L O N G to get 'er done then you might as well wait to get the most bang for your buck. The BEST time to me to announce the new contract would be:
The week of the NATIONALLY televised, highly watched, much anticipated Ohio State game in Columbus.
Talk about making a HUGE spalsh. The announcers would NOT be able to stop talking about it and could interview him before the game where he says:
"I am very happy with the new long term contract extension that I recently signed with the University of Miami that makes me one of the highest paid coaches in the ACC. I am very happy at Miami and plan on being the head coach of the Hurricanes for a VERY, VERY long time. Now that the contract negotiations are done off the field it is time to go win our sixth National Championship on the field."
100 million national viewers, all college football fans and every high school recruit in the COUNTRY would see it, hear it and KNOW it!
If I'm Kirby, I'd work out the details of the contract NOW and then sign it THEN. That's what I would do.

SOUP - I got a call out to my old high school coach. His team in Tampa has made the 5A playoffs in the Tampa area the last 3 years, with his permission I am going to use his LONG list of contacts with coaches around the state of Florida to get to their athletes and give them exposure.

Nobody is even talking about percent of increase in his annual salary.
Considering this is a small private schoo, (cheap) and been burned in the past.
I don't see any harm in low balling the yearly salary and JAM packing it with incentives.. IF he loves the U, as much as he says ( and I know he does), and if he knows it will impact recruiting.. Y wouldn't he make sure to get a deal done as well????

Don't a lot of kids start making up their minds right about now...ok I know some flip flop...but I mean most. How would you handle that aspect of it?

JMO... but the kids going into summer ball and our coaches, the fans, the recruits and other coaches and schools need to know, he's our guy and a permanent tag needs to be applied Aa soon as possible.

"When it comes to seeding the NFL, the Arena League and NFL Europe have nothing on the talented folks from Coral Gables... The Hurricanes' draft dominance is a trend that has shown up for 15 years now.... Since 1987, Miami has been the NFL's most fertile farm system. And it's not even close."

Does anyone on here really, really think recruits are wondering if Randy is going to be here or he's going to bolt to one of the NFL teams that they keep reading about that is just dying to pour zillions of dollars into getting him? ... yea all those teams,
Sometimes we over diagnose stuff.
Wasn't Randy going to lose his whole recruiting class because Butch said he wasn't going to be at the U in a couple years.?
Remember the sky is falling bunch whining all summer over that one?
How did that class turn out again?
Randy isn't going anywhere because of money.
The only time Randy will leave the U is two more back to back third place finishes in the Coastal Division
relax boys.
There will be reason enough to panic and worry as guys get sucker punched, tear up knees, or get caught doing something they might regret.

You want to talk about a double standard...
Rooney just stood there and talked about how they know Ben messed up but he is ready to prove he can not make mistakes again (Clearly a poor decision of aggressively interacting at the least in a poor place with a woman or at the worst sexually assaulting and possibly raping a very inebriated woman) Make no mistake he did some pretty bad damage either way. If this sex was consensual or not, he put some serious backbone and force behind it to make her be in the much pain, and for their to be damage (a.k.a. blood). And the terrible choice of having sex with this inebriated woman (whom friends knew was inebriated) in a friggin' bar bathroom.. I mean Ben you make millions.. You can't afford a hotel?? Seriously.
Then the fact that he has been accused of this before.
Then Rooney goes to say that the trade of Santanio despite his dynamic ability was because he had become a menace with all of his issues...
WTF.. Are you serious. You have a press conference about Ben then try and throw shots at Santanio.. Seems like a big double standard.
>>>>
Now that's real.

LOL! But it's all in good fun. I hope CSM isn't mad at me.
The problem with Randy accepting a low base salary would hurt just as bad as waiting. Then coaches would use that in recruiting. Look even the program doesn't have full faith him in. He the lowest coach in the ACC blah, blah, blah.
Randy's sitting back scratching his head saying what haven't I done? I took the program from garbage and now there's a buzz and we have a loaded roster. I had to break the program down and build it back up brick by brick. He didn't just deal with loading up the roster. He had to put together to a staff worthy of coaching these kids up. That takes time and he's right on track of what the school wanted out him when they hired a 1st time HC.
Pay the man his money so he can walk into these recruits homes and say now what! Let's do the damn thing down in Miami!
The program isn't helping the situation from any angle. And if your not a part of the solution than you're a problem. Bad business...

Five from ACC on Lott Trophy Watch List
April, 15, 2010 Apr 152:28PM ETEmail Print Share By David Ubben
The Lott Trophy put five players from the ACC on its 2010 watch list.
Rashad Carmichael, Virginia Tech Hokies
John Graves, Virginia Tech
Robert Quinn, North Carolina Tar Heels
Duenta Williams, North Carolina
Alex Wujciak, Maryland Terrapins
The award is given to the nation's best defensive "IMPACT" player, an acronym that sums up the player's performance on and off the field. The committee considers each player's integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity.
No ACC player has ever won the award, which began in 2004. Jerry Hughes, a defensive end from TCU, took home the award last year.
