Costly errors and lack of offense once again doomed the University of Miami baseball team in the Super Regional tournament in Gainesville on Saturday night. The Hurricanes were bounced from the NCAA college baseball playoffs by the Florida Gators in game 2 by the score of 4-3.
UM head coach Jim Morris' crew was out-hit, out-pitched and out-played on the Gators home field. The Hurricanes scored a total of 5 runs in two games but it was their embarrassing defensive effort in the field that eventually would cost them the game in the ninth inning.
With two outs and only one out away from forcing a deciding game three on Sunday a UM infielder who will remain nameless poorly fielded another routine grounder and then threw the ball off target and in the dirt at first.
The UM first baseman who will also go nameless could not dig the errant throw out of the red clay. A play that should have easily ended the game instead allowed the dreaded Gators to score the tying run and send the game into extra innings.
Florida would then score the winning run in the top of the 10th inning to send Miami packing and on a long, sad bus ride back to the 305.
Miami closed out the season with an overall record of 43-20, while Florida (47-15) will advance to the College World Series after winning the first two games of the Super Regional.
The Hurricanes committed seven errors on the night, tying for the most errors in a post-season game in program history. UM pitched well enough to win but for the second straight night errors were the difference in the outcome of the game.
Miami wasted another excellent start by Chris Hernandez who turned in yet another solid outing. He allowed only one unearned run in 8 1/3 innings. Daniel Miranda was charged with the loss despite allowing just the one unearned run that decided the game.
Even UM pitcher Taylor Wulf's mom (seen below) throwing up the U before the game was not enough to cheer the Hurricanes on to victory in the home of the slimy swamp lizards.
Jim Morris and his young Miami squad and now have several months to work on their fundamentals as they set their sights on the 2011 ACC title, much like the one they won in 2008.
They better get busy. They have lots of work to do. Lots of work...

Hate to say it but, O'Sullivan is bringing in better kids up there in his short time of what, 3 years? And the results are right in front of you.
His staff of:
Brad Weitzel - was a state of Florida scout for the Twins from 1991-2007
Craig Bell - was the state of Georgia, South Cackalacka, North Cackalacka scout for the Mariners from 2000-2007
is kicking the ass of Jim Morris's staff in recruiting and teaching
Think about it. Weitzel and Bell and who they worked for before they hooked up with O'Sullivan in 2007. One was a scout for Twins for 16 years, the other was a scout for the Mariners for 7 years - you don't think they can't evaluate & sign talent with the best of them?
I think the proof is on the field from the past 3 years

Youth can NOT BE USED AS AN EXCUSE AT ALL - so don't even try to play that card
I even tried to think that way for a bit at the beginning of the season, thinking that these Cane pups were learning and they'll get better - you know what? They sure the f**k didn't get better at all, in fact, they got worse. I realized in trying to put their youth into it was a complete and utter failure - esp. when the Crocs starting lineup had the EXACT same amount of Frosh and Sophs out there that the Canes did, while throwing a Soph pitcher out there for the 1st game (Canes threw a Sr.) and throwing a Frosh starting pitcher out there for the 2nd game (Canes threw a Jr.)
If they didn't grow up by ACC Tourney time, of just after the Tourney, then they sure the hell weren't going to grow up at all. People say the ACC has the best baseball in the nation - well, playing against that competition then should make you better, yes? Did the Canes not get that memo?
Harold Martinez led the team in errors this year. 21. Think about that - 21 damn errors. Who's to say that he would've come up with that ground ball to Broad who was playing 3rd? and then made the out? Martinez didn't exactly light it up in the first game either, 0-3 with 2 Ks. I understand he's a threat at the plate, but come on, look at the offensive output the Canes had - or lack there of
Florida's pitching core didn't worry about the "home run threat" b/c they were going after the Cane hitters regardless. Aluminum bats are a home run threat at all times - you can't say that a height challenged Melendres hit a bomb, then say that the Canes missed Martinez home run threat ... obviously if a height challenged Melendres can hit one, why the hell can't anyone else?
They have a hell of a lot of work to do and #3 Morris knows it. I dunno how #3 handles things, but hopefully he doesn't use liquid relief or else all the liquor stores from Gainesville down to Gables will be hit up and bought out
Hernandez is a great man for not going absolute apesh*t after watching what he put together out there, come crashing down. That cat is truly a team player

First of all, there's no need to dizz on the 2010 Miami Hurricanes. What's done is done!
Second, a Cane fan above, I believe Sammy, said Morris Cane team will be better next season. I agree! Of course, there will be ' qUestions ' surrounding the Cane arms on the mound, again. And Morris has to find a home threat to replance Grandal.
Third. Without arguably speaking their best player on the diamond last night, Miami had that Gator nine in dire straits. Even with the home mob behind Florida.
Not having Harold in the lineup and holding down the ' hot corner ' hurt Miami mUCho SatUrday nite. Crucial errors by a youngin' Cane who hadn't played a lick this season albeit there was plenty of blame to go aroUnd for the setback.
Yet, with all the adversity of not having their Heart-n-Soul, arguably speaking, on the diamond, Morris' nine had the game won. Well, I thUnk so. LOL
With Martinez not in the lineup, Florida's pitching corp didn't have to worry aboUt the HR threat. But wait, the ' height challenged ' Melendres shut-up the yapping, bloviating Gator mob for an eternal moment.
Fourth, any and all Miami fandom has to ' feel ' for the gutty Hernandez. The man was pitching on a few days rest, yet he probably pitched his ' best ' game as a Hurricane.
Bottom line, Chris didn't deserve the outcome he and his teammates witnessed. The Miami baseball program will sUrely miss one Chris Hernandez. Perhaps a HEALED Erickson will be able to take over the No. 1 pitching rotation next season.
Finally, hopefully all the retUrning Miami Hurricane baseballer' will collectively improve their game. This was a young team which will only get better in 2011, and with some SOLID pitching Miami should be playing in another SuperRegional, again, with the opportUnity to play in the C.W.S. new ball park in downtown Omaha.
By the way, is it Cane football season yet. LMAO

Vanity of vanities. All is vain. LOL
' Even money '- no not Eddie Money - Martinez returns next season. Because IF he has another stellar season in 2011, he'll be a solid Top 10 M.L.B. draft selection.
Just U'all Cane baseball fandom wait and see.

Just wondering Cane baseball ' insiders', is Hernandez a possible return next season.
I was mistaken, because I thuNK Cris was a junior.
With a senior Hernandez, along with a ' healthy ' Eric, on the mound next season, your Miami Hurricanes will be Top 15 material again, and possibly a Top 10 threat IF they can get down the ' fundies ' of fielding.

I doubt Hernandez will return. He was drafted by the Red Sox and their record of signing players in the top 4 rounds is nearly perfect. They are will to overpay a slotted price for a player. They actually look for hard to sign players because is represents good value and a perticular slot.

2010 Academic Progress Reports
What are the schools doing in class?
It gets easily forgotten, but this is sses from 2004-2005 to 2008-2009. Every Division I sports team calculates its APR each academic year, based on the eligibility, retention and graduation of each scholarship student-athlete. Teams that score below 925 (this is the Mendoza line ... if you can't hit this, you're just not trying) on their four-year rate and can lose up to 10 percent of their scholarships through immediate penalties. Teams can also face historically based penalties for poor academic performance over time.
Below are the rankings for the FBS teams based on their APR and with our scoring for how they graded out. We categorized the teams into ten categories. If a program was in the 90-100% range, it gets a 10 (for our Program Rankings to come out later this summer), while a program that finished in the 1-10% range gets a 1 (with many getting a monster slap on the wrist from the NCAA).
10 is obviously amazing, anything 7 or above is fantastic, and 4 or below is miserable.
10 – an APR of 90-to-100%

Frankie Hammond caught doing a Carlos Dunlap.
As practice has yet to start and no game of significance is pending, receiver Frankie Hammond has been suspended from all team activities due to DUI arrests. In the event that his speed and receiving ability are needed, the university reserves the right to reinstate him at any time.
University police say Hammond was speeding, swerving and driving with two open bottles of whiskey in his car Sunday morning.

I'm not sure this program is as far away as some seem to think. They lost in extras on the road against #3 without a top starter and their top HR guy. Rain delays took away at least a day of rest for our staff-maybe that extra day allows CH to finish the game. And they start 4-5 freshmen, 2 sophs, and a JUCO transfer. You can call all that excuses if you want, but I call 'em facts.
The D's an issue, but Perez only had 1 more E than Jemile Weeks as freshmen. Mark Sobolewski in 08 had 17 E's at 3rd on the #1 team in the nation, so if Harold works hard on his D off-season I think we'll be right there. I think Martinez would be better suited in the outfield with his speed and arm but the outfield is crowded and who's the option at 3rd? He's hit 30 HR's already in his career and has first round potential.
I think you might be a little tough on JD. Erickson and Santana were ruined by injuries. (check Santana's #'s in 08 & 09 before season ending arm trouble) And as far as closer, this year was a failure but in the past 4 years the guy has groomed 3 all american closers with 2 drafted in round 1 and the third taken #42. (just outside round 1) Miranda's a soph with good stuff and now has all year to learn that role instead of being tossed into it mid-season. Encinosa is a freshman all-american and has awesome stuff. I'd give Arteaga a chance given his pretty strong resume.
Almost all the everyday players will return along with Erickson, and don't forget about Whaley. Due to the economy, MLB teams had a tough time signing their picks last year, so CH has a real good shot at coming back. And every year Morris adds at least 2-3 productive freshmen.
Given the track record of these coaches and all those returning players, that's a pretty nice line-up in my view. Not just for next season but the next 2. I guess we'll see.

Meph...I have heard some negative things about JD as a coach from several sources. Nothing major or scandalous just negative. Now they may all just be repeating the same things over and over from the same source but still.
I will tell you one thing I did notice at games this year in the bullpen. When I was at the UM vs UVA series the Virginia pitchers had a complete routine that they followed every game even if they were not pitching.
During each game they do extensive stretching, isometrics, various exercises, throwing drills from one knee, standing, long distance, etc. Miami's pitchers do NONE of this during the game.
They do this one drill with a small towel where they hold one end and go into their pitching motion and then smack the catchers glove with it to focus on follow through and getting their weight onto their front leg to generate more power.
I was sitting along the third base line near the bullpen with several high school players and pitchers and they were taking notes and watching VERY intensely. Some even started up brief convo's with the UVA players. I was just observing.
It is no mistake that UVA has been very highly ranked and has had some of the best pitching staffs and lowest ERA in the ACC for the last three to five years running.

Facts? I've given plenty of facts based upon statistics .. classification of the Canes and Croc players .. and we all saw first hand what happened during the year
Where do the future starters come from, that's what I want to know. If you have 14 pitchers on staff, obviously they're not all starters, you move some to the bully. Some of them have to be able to have shown potential for being a starter, b/c if not, then why did you recruit them and how do you get a starter in the first place - from recruiting, right? By recruiting, you're only bringing in more Frosh, so obviously most of the guys that you recruited and brought in before who are on your roster now, have the stuff that you know might have a starter's makeup. Not having Erickson sucked, but also what does that say about recruiting, in not having enough confidence to put a kid that you brought in obviously b/c you saw something - and put him out on the mound? These kids you went out and signed, you signed them for a reason b/c you saw them, liked them ... so why not use them when Erickson went down? The Frosh All American EJ, why not use him? Whaley? Why are they even there then in the first place?
Once Erickson went down, you have but no choice to put those guys out there. Why the hell wouldn't you? No faith in the guys you recruited?
You know who ate up the most innings for the Crocs this year, and who were their best pitchers?
Panteliodis 96 IP (Soph)
Randall 94 IP (Frosh)
Johnson 70 IP (Frosh)
Chapman 42 IP (Jr.)
Larson 36 IP (Soph)
Barfield 35 IP (Sr.)
Remember the 2 of 3 they took from the Canes down in Gables this year? Their starting pitchers that they won with were a Soph (Panteliodis) that beat Hernandez & another Soph (Toledo) that beat Erickson - Toledo threw only 25 innings this year, but O'Sullivan put him in against the Canes to start against a former All-American
People who say the Canes are young - well, let's look at the starting lineups between both ballclubs
Game 1
Crocs lineup 1-9
Fonatana SS (Frosh)
den Dekker CF (Sr.)
Tucker 1B (Soph)
Dent 3B (Frosh)
Johnson DH (Frosh)
Zunino C (Frosh)
Adams 2B (Jr.)
Thompson LF (Soph)
Pigott RF (Sr.)
Starting Pitcher Panteliodis (Soph)
4 Frosh, 3 Soph, 1 Jr., 2 Sr.
Canes lineup 1-9
Ratcliff 2B (Frosh)
Lawson 1B (Sr.)
Grandal C (Jr.)
Martinez DH (Soph)
Pelaez RF (Jr.)
Melendres CF (Soph)
Broad 3B (Frosh)
Perez SS (Frosh)
DeVoss LF (Frosh)
Starting Pitcher Gutierrez (Sr.)
Relief Pitcher Jason Santana (Sr.)
4 Frosh, 2 Soph, 2 Jr., 3 Sr.
Canes actually had more experience, esp. pitching with 2 Seniors out there. Both clubs had same amount of Frosh, Crocs had +1 Soph over the Canes, -1 Jr. under the Canes
Game 2, Crocs & Canes lineups
Crocs (in order): SS (Frosh), LF (Soph), 1B (Soph), 3B (Frosh), CF (Sr.), C (Frosh), DH (Frosh), 2B (Jr.), RF (Sr.)
Starting Pitcher (Frosh)
Relief Pitcher (Jr.), (Sr.), (Frosh), (Soph)
6 Frosh, 3 Soph, 2 Jr., 3 Sr.
Canes (in order): 2B (Frosh), 1B (Sr.), C (Jr.), RF (Jr.), CF (Soph), 3B (Frosh), DH (Soph), SS (Frosh), LF (Frosh)
Starting Pitcher (Jr.)
Relief Pitcher (Soph)
4 Frosh, 3 Soph, 3 Jr., 1 Sr.
Crocs used 6 Frosh (5 starters, 1 relief) to the Canes 4, same amount of Sophs, Canes used +1 Jr. over the Crocs and -2 Sr. under the Crocs
Youth is no excuse whatsoever for the Canes, when the Crocs had the exact same amount or even more youth out there
Scotty Lawson & Nate Melendres were hitting more home runs than anyone else in the post season pretty much - yes, Harold has a big bat with the potential of a home run ... but look at if little Scotty can rake, why can't anyone else
I think it's actually a negative that anyone should think it's ok that these kids only have one more or one less error than their predecessors from teams a couple of years ago - b/c it's not really showing progress
You take a look at both programs, UiF and Miami from when Kevin O'Sullivan took over up in Gainesville. O'Sullivans team has a winning record against the Canes since he got there, only 3 years ago. His team has knocked the Canes out of post-season play now, 2 years consecutively. His Crocs team has progressed, while the Canes and their coaching staff with their history - have regressed in the 3 years O'Sullivan has been up in Gainesville
O'Sullivan since he got there:
2008 - Regional, first for UiF since 2005
2009 - Super Regional
2010 - CWS
Canes since O'Sullivan got there:
2008 - CWS
2009 - Regional (knocked out by UiF)
2010 - Super Regional (knocked out by UiF)
You know how many of his Crocs and Croc signees were drafted last year, O'Sullivan's 2nd year on the job? 10 players and 12 signees
How many Frosh Louisville Slugger All-Americans did the Crocs have again as opposed to the Canes - 4 to 1? And that 1 that the Canes have, isn't even a starter
3 of those Crocs are starters, 1 of them is a relief pitcher and DH that can rake
The defense was a problem last year and Harold Martinez actually made more this year (21) than last year (19)
Canes errors:
2010 - 84
2009 - 80
2008 - 64
2007 - 81
2006 - 78
2005 - 93
Any correlation between 2008 having the fewest errors of those years and the Canes going to the CWS? Nah
How about the difference in type of players that have come in sense Gino DiMare resigned a couple of years ago, seeing how he was the recruiting coordinator and had been with the Canes for 12 years?
Ryan Braun, Chris Hernandez, Cesar Carrillo, Chris Perez, Jon Jay, Yonder Alonso, Jemile Weeks, Dennis Raben, Blake Tekotte, etc. - those are his boys
That 2008 team, was basically his that he had an enormous role in putting together
How many of those guys that JD groomed, were guys that DiMare recruited and got to Miami
Now that JD is recruiting coordinator, is there a drop off?
I'm thinking that O'Sullivan's staff that he put together is stronger than what Morris has right now - there's proof positive within the time that they all arrived at UiF until now

Miami Herald blogger Joseph Goodman auditioning to become the newest member of the Gator parole board:
Let's hope UF coach Urban Meyer remains consistent and allows Hammond back on the team. Meyer gives second chances to deserving people and Hammond is certainly deserving of a second chance.
Janoris Jenkins, beast that he is, resisted arrest last year by fighting through a police Taser and received limited punishment from Meyer. Aaron Hernandez played football and smoked marijuana at UF, God bless him. Carlos Dunlap was arrested for driving drunk before the SEC championship game and remained on the team. I could keep going, but you get the point. Meyer is usually a forgiving coach, and it has served him well in the past.
