Pre-season rankings should be classified under the following heading: "Believe only half of what you read and none of what you hear".
It is at this time of the year that blatant speculation and even wild guessing are often encouraged and in some rare cases are raised to an art form by certain national media types.
Hard facts and in-depth research is often replaced by rumor or reputation.
Accuracy often goes completely out the window and takes a back seat to hype.
A herd mentality dominates the college football landscape from Pullman to Piscataway.
Now that the top 5 pre-season ranking lists are out it is time to analyze the predictions and look at the averages and possible outcomes for the 2010 season.
Fortunately for us Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports did the hard work and compared the rankings of the following polls: The Sporting News, Phil Steele, Lindy's, Athlonand CBSSports.com. He then compiled the rankings into a consensus Top 25. Here are some interesting findings from that list:
- A total of 32 teams received votes in the five national polls.
- Six teams from the SEC were in the consensus Top 25 including #1 Alabama and #4 Florida.
- Five ACC teams made the list with #10 VT, #13 UM and #15 FSU all in the top 15.
- Miami will play six of the Top 25: #2 OSU, #10 VT, #15 FSU, UNC #17, #18 Pitt and #19 GT.
Here are some interesting selections that will interest Miami Hurricane fans from the consensus Top 25 according to Dodd:
2. Ohio State: The Big Ten is back. Ohio State never left. Highest rank, No. 2. Lowest rank, No. 3. (118 points. Avg. rank between No. 2 and No. 3)
10. Virginia Tech:Class of the ACC until further notice. Highest rank, No. 8. Lowest rank, No. 13. (77 points. Avg. rank between No. 10 and No. 11)
13. Miami: Starting to look like Canes of old. Highest rank, No. 4. Lowest rank, No. 14. (69 points. Avg. rank between No. 12 and No. 13)
14. Wisconsin: Fresh from pounding Miami. Factor in Big Ten. Highest rank, No. 6. Lowest rank, No. 23. (67 points. Avg. rank between No. 13 and No. 14)
15. Florida State: New coach, healthy quarterback. Great prospects. Highest rank, No. 14. Lowest rank, No. 20. (55 points, Avg. rank No. 15)
17. North Carolina: Nation's best defense? Highest rank, No. 12. Lowest rank, No. 24. (39 points. Avg. rank between No. 18 and No. 19)
18. Pittsburgh: Coming off first 10 win season since 1981. Highest rank, No. 14. Not ranked by Steele. (33 points. Avg. rank between No. 17 and No. 18)
19. Georgia Tech:Defending ACC champs seem to have gotten better. Highest rank, No. 13. Not ranked by Steele and Athlon. (30 points. Avg. rank No. 16)

Didn't MJ's team make the playoffs even when he was playing baseball? Now ask yourself, "Can the Cavs make the playoffs without LeBron?"
I think not.

U know what ESPN is thinking right?
The ACC has signed a 12-year television rights deal with ESPN worth approximately $1.86 billion.
ACC commissioner John Swofford basically confirmed the worth of the deal during a Thursday morning teleconference.
Asked specifically about the $1.86 billion price tag Swofford said: "I have read some things that have been written that are quite accurate."
Swofford added that each school's take has doubled. Breaking that down evenly means that the conference will receive $155 million a year from the deal, more than doubling the current take of $75 million. That's $13 million per school which, for now, puts the ACC ahead of the Big 12 in the No. 3 spot in TV revenue behind the Big Ten and SEC.

Not all big 12 schools. Texes and OU stand to make between 20 - 25 million each.

They're thinking, "Let me get this deal for the U before they're too expensive to afford." haha
Smart thinking.
Throw in a revamped FSU and a steady UNC, Clemson, GT, VT and maybe some other school like MD or something, and you've got a damn good football conference.
Now if only football could catch on in those markets the way it does in the SEC and Big Ten....

I voted 11-1 which could put us right in the NC game if the loss is out of ACC play.
I think 11-1 and a BCS bowl win would guarantee a top 4 finish making me ecstatic and putting the Canes a year ahead of my prediction 4 years ago.
Posted by: solarcane | July 08, 2010 at 03:01 PM
Solar I think we have atleast 2 L's in the chamber for this year.
I am still gun shy about JH12. Not sure why more people aren't to be honest.
Dude is careless with the ball any way you look at it.
Hope I am wrong but doubt it.

I think Jacory will lead the ACC in picks but not as high as last year.
I think he will lead the ACC in TD passes too, and Yds.
I just feel our defense will get him back on the field more often.
I also think our running game is going ring up some long TD runs. Jacory isn't going to feel like he has to throw it deep at least twice every series he gets out there.
Whipple will surely account for two or three ill advised deep picks, it's just part of his nature to be aggressive.
I'd rather live with a pick every game trying to win than take a sack trying to avoid losing.
Posted by: solarcane | July 08, 2010 at 03:51 PM
Solar no doubt.
We can only hope it plays out like that.
When everyone looks at the holes on this team they skim over QB like there is no doubt.
I wish I had the same faith....
No doubt he improves in his 2nd year with Whip. How much??? Only time will tell.
GO CANEZ!!!!!
Posted by: Canez1 | July 08, 2010 at 04:02 PM
@ First Loss...
So Pitt beats us then loses to USF??? I don't buy it.
When we do beat OSU, sure the media is going to be all over our jocks. And I am sure the players have learned from last year as much as most of us did. I think they'll handle the media better this year. It's called maturity.
Posted by: 360Cane | July 08, 2010 at 04:35 PM
I might have missed this already but I heard we are switching to a west coast offense to cut down on picks this year - is this true? What was our offense labeled last year? I thought we were considered pro style last year.....
Posted by: KnoxCane | July 08, 2010 at 04:51 PM
by the way I understand that a west coast offense is a type of pro style but the whole west coast style was news to me.

"It could happen as early as Thursday. Although, given Sean Henderson's penchant for promotion -- he appeared on set with his son when Seantrel announced for USC last winter -- the Hendersons may wait a day or two until the LeBron glare has faded."

C1, J-12 was a half-frosh, half-frosh with a new OC. His 1st year under center was about the same as Ponder's first year. Remember all those picks he tossed then what happened last year?
J-12 will toss some picks but the INT/TD ration will be more like 7-1 or so.
Accuracy wasn't his problem, inexperience, overconfidence in his arm strength, and then a broken thumb were the causes for the picks.
I expect every one of those mistakes to be corrected this year, every one of them. Given time in the pocket, I don't think he'll face a defense he can't dismantle.
09 was basically his RS year, the one all the great Canes QBs got watching and learning from a veteran QB and a veteran OC.
J-12 was probably the most advanced offensive mind on campus his first year.
Now, he can learn from Whip and from his past mistakes.

If we lose a game it shouldn't happen until the bowl game.
OSU is overrated. Everyone else is a known quantity primed for a beatdown, FSU included.
On offense we're ready to toast everyone we play in a different way, every week. One week it'll be Bnejamin, next week Hank and Chase, next week AJ-II and Thompkins, next week Miller and James, next week Berry and Byr, next week Gordon and Cleveland, next week Streeter and LA, next week Davon and Byrd and Chase....on and on and on...big plays, small plays, small plays that become big plays, medium sized plays.....everything.
STRAP UP!! IT'S BEEN A LONG WAIT.

man...where is the line for being a good dad and to tough on your kid??? My son has his middle school football tryouts Monday..my son is very small for his age..4'6 and 70 lbs..but he is quick and small as they come...today I had him out practicing and we were there about 10 mins and he went to catch a ball and the ball hit his fingers, jamming one of his fingers. I gave him a few secs then told him to line back up..and he started complaining..so I got upset and had him pick up the cones and we went home. I explained that jammed fingers are gonna happen, but he had to shake it off, that he could still catch, that it wasnt a sprained ankle or something...etc etc...was I being to hard?

Did ya'll just hear the reports on the mood in Cleveland, they're on psycho mode right now, they actually have security around Lebron's house, espn reports Lebron will never be welcome in the state of Ohio again, i feel bad for Lebron, i mean no matter how you twist it, wether Lebron announcing on tv to go somewhere else would feel like a stab in the back, they shouldn't be pressuring the kid to be one city's messiah.
Posted by: Sean Spence is a Beast!!! | July 08, 2010 at 06:27 PM
If D-wade had left for another team, Miami would probably sigh it out and say oh well.
Posted by: Sean Spence is a Beast!!! | July 08, 2010 at 06:30 PM
Man, we take our sports here for granted, i mean the Canes won 5 NC's, Heat won a championship, Marlins 2 etc etc., but when we don't win, nobody really cares, meanwhile Alabama and Ohio State, and even the turds fill up their stadium with 90k people just on their spring games alone.
Do we really deserve to have Lebron James, D-wade, and Bosh together???? i kinda feel bad for Cleveland, b'coz they rely on Lebron too much, economic wise.
I hope Miami fans show a lil more passion and appreciation with the sports teams we have down here.
