The University of Miami volleyball team was honored as one of a record 450 college and high school institutions to receive the 2009-10 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Academic Team Award, as announced by the AVCA office in Lexington, Ky.

With 450 schools receiving the Academic Team Award for the 2009-10 academic year, the AVCA set a new record, smashing the previous years' total of 409 and sets a new all-time high for this award. Of the 450 schools, the University of Miami was one of 94 NCAA Division I teams to receive the honor.

The `Canes were also one of just 18 schools that advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 to receive this year's Team Academic Award.

University of Miami student-athletes Allen Bailey, Matt Bosher and Brandon Harris have been selected to the 2010 Preseason All-ACC Football team, as announced by the league office on Wednesday. The team was selected in voting conducted by the media at the annual ACC Football Kickoff, which was held July 25-26 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro.

Bailey, Bosher and Harris are three of 16 honorees on the team that were selected to the 2009 All-ACC first team. Bailey made this year's preseason squad as a defensive end, Harris is representing UM as a cornerback while Bosher made the team both as kicker and a punter.

Hurricane's Steven Wesley fails to make the grade

The University of Miami dismissed defensive end Steven Wesley for academic reasons, sources told the Miami Herald

Wesley, a 6-2, 250-pound senior from Bartow, Fla., has made 17 starts the last two seasons and has 44 career tackles, 10 for loss. He had three sacks last season.

Coaches may also dismiss receiver Thearon Collier.

Collier, a junior from Miami Booker T. Washington High, is expected to meet with the coaching staff on Monday, sources said.
