Yesterday I had a chance to catch up with our old friend Manny Navarro from the Miami Herald. He happened to drop by Canespace late last night (as he is known to do from time to time) and I managed to corner him for one of our most popular features: "Five Questions With Manny Navarro".
Affectionately known here as "The Mandingo" (part man, part dogged reporter), Manny has been generous of his time and shared his knowledge of all things related to your University of Miami Hurricanes here on The Space over the last three years.
With the 2010 college football season just around the corner and Fall practice set to start soon, Navarro is now back on the Hurricane beat after covering the Florida Marlins for most of the Summer.
After getting his fill of baseball and the struggling (below .500) Marlins, The Mandingo recently posted a flurry of feature articles on the Herald's UM blog, "Eye On The U", to prove he (much like UM) is coming back with a vengance!
Those articles can be found here: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/umiami/
Here are Manny's responses to my five questions:
Q: The Offensive Line is the primary concern for UM this year. Who will start, who will play and who will dominate?
A: Just a preseason prediction, but here is my two deep for September 2:
LT Orlando Franklin | Seantrel Henderson
LG Brandon Washington | Malcolm Bunche
C Tyler Horn | Brandon Linder
RG Harland Gunn | Jared Wheeler
RT Joel Figueroa | Jermaine Johnson
I know you might be surprised to see Joel Figueroa at right tackle. But I've been hearing for awhile this is a real possibility. I was told Jermaine Johnson came out ahead of Ben Jones in the spring. If he proves he's ready, he'll start at right tackle and Figueroa will slide over to right guard. But if Johnson isn't, UM will go with their best five. Eventually, I expect Henderson and Linder to make a strong push to play. Both are too talented to at least not get into the rotation.
Q: The Linebacker position has Hurricane fans guessing. Will Kylan Robinson really start at MLB? Will Colin McCarthy move to the middle? Will Sean Spence rebound? Will others show up?
A: All great questions without clear cut answers and a serious area for concern for Canes fan. I've been told the ball is ultimately in Kylan Robinson's court. If he can stay healthy and continue to improve, he'll win the job in the fall and keep McCarthy and Spence on the outside. Word is defensive coordinator John Lovett wants McCarthy to play the middle, but Randy Shannon would prefer to keep him outside. The biggest thing UM needs this season is for both McCarthy and Spence to remain healthy. Ramon Buchanon did a nice job last season. But it wasn't amazing. Jordan Futch is coming back from injury. Outside of that those five, UM is counting on C.J. Holton to take the next step and a bunch of freshmen to grow up fast. Obviously, the Canes can't suffer any major injuries here or we could see some guys make a position switch. Marcus Robinson, in my mind, would be the first called on to move back to linebacker.
Q: The WR position is locked and loaded. Which WR excels this year for the Hurricanes?
A: It's more like who doesn't excel. Leonard Hankerson should once again be the go-to guy in the offense with Travis Benjamin the big play threat and Aldarius Johnson the guy you go to on third down. LaRon Byrd finished second on the team last year with 33 catches. But somehow, he doesn't feel like he did enough. I think if anybody breaks out with more TD catches and big plays it is him. I think we'll also see a lot more of Kendal Thompkins and Tommy Streeter than we have the first two seasons.
Q: Opposite Brandon Harris who starts? Who gets P/T? Who should we look for as a PTP?
A: After Brandon Harris, the starting job is Demarcus Van Dyke's to lose. I've been hearing about how much he's improved. We'll see. After that, the nickelback job will likely go to either Brandon McGee or Ryan Hill. The way the Canes have used the nickelback spot in the past is to give it to a veteran. I could see Hill being typecast for that and McGee being pushed to be more of the deep corner like Van Dyke and Sam Shields were used last year because of their natural speed. I think the biggest development could turn out to be what happens with Jamal Reid. We know he was pushing Ray Ray Armstrong hard at safety in the spring. But Vaughn Telemaque told us Wednesday Reid has been doing great things at corner during 7 on 7 work. With Jared Campbell and Jojo Nicolas back as serviceable backups at safety, it almost makes sense to try Reid out at corner since it is a bigger need. UM could ultimately decide to just put the best guys on the field like they do on the offensive line.
Q: We all know that Mike James will be the starting RB for the Hurricanes this year. After James which RB do you see as making a difference in 2010?
A: Good one 86! Well, ahead of Mike James, Damien Berry will probably get between 20-25 touches a game and be asked to carry the brunt of the load. Since he and James are such similar backs in terms of their running styles, I actually see redshirt freshman Lamar Miller getting more touches than James because he's a change of pace. Berry told me Wednesday Miller has looked really good being shifty and hitting holes hard with his breakaway speed. Either way, all three are pretty much entrenched to handle the bulk of the carries. Depending on what happens with Graig Cooper, I think Storm Johnson or Lee Chambers are next on the depth chart. We'll see them play sort of a Shawnbrey McNeal type role -- 5-6 carries in games that are decided before the fourth quarter. Eduardo Clements and Darion Hall probably won't get off the scout team all year. And that's a good thing. Let those guys develop and stay healthy for when Berry and Cooper are gone.
That's all for this installment of "Five Questions With Navarro". We thank Manny for his time and insights into your Miami Hurricanes.
Stay tuned as Fall practice starts on August 5 and the news coming out of Coral Gables picks up over the next couple of weeks leading up to the season opener against FAMU at newly re-named Sun Life Stadium on September 2.

I believe if we stay HEALTHY as a team... We're Champions of the College Football World!
I believe we're EXPERIENCED enough now to make a fully sustained run.
No more great starts... then getting full of ourselves, and collapsing in key games.
I can't wait for this season to begin!

I'm more nervous about this season than I have been in a LONG time.
The last two years my expectations were low and I predicted and was hoping for 9-3.
This year everyone, me included expects at LEAST 10-2 and an ACC title.
That makes me nervous. Happy and excited, but nervous too.

Even Stevie Wonder can see that Marcus Robinson should b moved back 2 LB, so y cant the bossman c this? Move M-Rob to strong-side, C-Mac to the middle and Spence to weak-side and you have arguably the best trio of lb's in college football hands down. Dont know about u guys but it urks the hell outta me when i read where kids like Tony Steward claim UM stop contacting them 4 no particular reason. Cant continue to turn our backs on the Jeff Luc's, Jon Bostic's and Tony Steward's and xpect to compete 4 titles with the likes of Kevin Cain, Shayon Green and 190# lb's like Ty Cornelious & Travis Williams. Not saying these guys cant or wont b great 1 day but the goal is to win now...just sayin.

Maddux Sports Handicapping
Top teams in the Country 2010
Team #9 – Miami Hurricanes College Football Preview
QB Jacory Harris Leads the Miami Hurricanes Football Team
We have reached the top 10 teams in the nation and the cream of the crop is starting to rise. Here is team #9 and the 2010 Miami Hurricanes Football Preview. All part of our 31 teams in 31 days college football season preview from Maddux Sports which includes an outlook, a college football pick or two, and a recap of last season.
No. 9 Miami, Fl. Hurricanes
2009 record: 9-4
2009 Bowl Game: 20-14 loss to Wisconsin in Champs Sports Bowl
2009 ATS: 6-6
Returning starters: 13 (6 on offense, 7 on defense)
Offense
The Hurricanes return six starters on a high-flying offense that struggled at times. Quarterback Jacory Harris threw for 3,352 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2009. He also threw 17 interceptions, a stat he needs to improve on if he wants to lead the team to the top of the conference.
Graig Cooper and Damien Berry were the top rushers last year. Cooper ran for 695 yards and four touchdowns, but is doubtful for the 2010 season after injuring his knee in the Champs Sports Bowl.
Berry will most likely get the bulk of the carries. He has shown that he can carry a high load, rushing 93 times for 616 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He showcased his explosiveness in the 2009 campaign, averaging 6.6 yards per carry.
Berry will get help from sophomore Mike James, who is a bruising runner. Lamar Miller and Storm Johnson have shown that they can step in when needed, and they could get some playing time too.
Wideouts Leonard Hankerson, Travis Benjamin, and Adarius Johnson form a dangerous receiving corps. All three of them averaged over 17 yards per reception last season, and they combined for 11 touchdowns.
Defense
The defense is led by a strong line and a solid secondary. Senior defensive end Allen Bailey had seven sacks and four tackles for a loss last season. He will get help from fellow defensive end Marcus Robinson (4 sacks) and linebacker Sean Spence, who sacked opposing quarterbacks three times in 2009.
The linebacking unit might be the biggest question mark in an otherwise solid defense. While Spence is strong on the outside, the Hurricanes will sorely miss inside linebacker Darryl Sharpton, who was drafted by the Houston Texans in the fourth round. Colin McCarthy could move from the outside to the inside to plug the hole.
The secondary looks very strong with junior cornerback Brandon Harris leading the way. Harris had two interceptions last season, but proved to be a shutdown corner with 15 passes broken up. He added five tackles for a loss and one sack.
Sophomore safety Vaughn Telemaque has looked strong last season with 48 tackles and four passes broken up, and should be even better with the added experience.
Special Teams
Matt Bosher had a great season as punter and kicker. He averaged 42.5 yards on his punts and forced 21 fair catches. He made opposing offenses star within their own 20-yard line 23 times, but also had three punts blocked.
Bosher went 50-50 on extra points and missed only two kicks total. He made his sole attempt from 50+ yards, a 51-yarder in an overtime loss to Clemson.
Thearon Collier returned punts in 2009 and was a dangerous weapon for the Hokies. He scored two touchdowns on returns and averaged 13.2 yards per attempt.
Graig Cooper and Mike James split kick return duties, and with Cooper possibly missing the season, James could be the sole kick returner. He averaged 21.3 yard per return last season on 19 attempts.
Against the spread
The Hurricanes went 6-6 against the college football line in 2009. They were 2-2 as the home favorite and 2-3 when favored on the road. They went 1-0 as the home dog and had the same record as the underdog on the road.
Miami went 3-5 in conference games and 3-1 against non-conference opponents. They are 15-21 under fourth year head coach Randy Shannon and 56-64 ATS in the last ten years.
You can bet on it
Bet on the Hurricanes against Florida A&M in their season opener. Miami is 7-1 against the Rattlers and has outgained Floriad A&M by an average of 298 yards per game in the last four meetings. The Hurricanes won 48-16 last season and 51-10 in 2006.
Favor the fade
Fade the Hurricanes at Pittsburgh on September 23. They are 21-9-1 in the series against the Panthers but have lost 14 out of the last 15 matchups. They are also currently on a six game losing streak against Pitt.

All of these "previews" from "experts" kill me. I'd be careful who you listen to if your $ is on the line.
From the preview above:

Mike James is the best RB for running between the tackles. He showed that in the spring game that he is very capable. Berry is also a good runner, especially for running inside and for bouncing it outside. I think MJ and Berry will split most of the carries, and Lamar and/or Storm will come in to clean things up in blowouts and latein the season.
Kevin Nelson might play right away, but he will play more later in the season. I don't see Kylan Robinson as the permanent answer at MLB unless he improves.

"in the series against the Panthers but have lost 14 out of the last 15 matchups. They are also currently on a six game losing streak against Pitt.'
WTF?? maybe against the Steelers but not the Panthers.
It seems like it was like 97 last time we lost to Pitt.
we won in 89,90,93,94,95,96,98,99,00,01,02,03

I'm so thankful that Brandon Harris is a hurricane, I'll sleep a little easier tonight knowing that he is back there leading that secondary. Make no mistake about it, he is a STUD!
Go Canes!

The kid DaMarcus Smith from Louisville - damn, that kid has a cannon and also great touch on his long pass that hits the target in the endzone
If Charlie Strong can keep the verbal from this kid & turn it into an ink drying LOI, nice get Charlie
And, according to this ESPN article, it looks like Charlie will keep DaMarcus for the most part
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/football/news/story?id=5396547
Jeff Driskel on that video is the kid I saw last year up at the USF 7-on-7 Badger Sports Tourney ..... he's obviously put on some weight - he's a Croc, everything that I've read about him, people basically say he's the most physically ready kid out there to step in

August 16th is the cut-off day for one of the Cane baseball commits
I hope it helps that his high school coach is a Cane .... they could really use this kid
http://www.seminolechronicle.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2010/06/30/4c2b9646b631a
Also don't know about Yordy Cabrera yet - he was taken 60th overall .... he might jump, but hope he doesn't

813/727/941 Cane fans .... if you want to head down to USF on Sat & Sun, you can see the USF 7-on-7 Sling & Shoot Tourney, and also they have the USF Big Man Camp running at the same time out there, for OLine and DLine kids
2 Canes will be there
** Vernon Hargreaves, who coached the Canes LBs from '98-'05
** Kevin Patrick, who was a bad man for the Canes from '89-'93
I'm not sure exactly what all teams will be there, but, I'm heading there tomorrow to find out and post on here if peeps want to wait to find out before they roll over here for the championship games on Sunday

AR cane be smart do not pay a boat load for cane tickets. Hard to get the seats you speak of only because I believe they are reserved for boosters. But if you get seats in the upper bowl, those are good too. FSU will probably be the most popular game, may be a bit over a partial sellout. Depends how good the canes come out of the 3 game road series. If they are undefeated probably closer to a true sell out. If not....well this is Miami.
Great win last night by the Marlins! Even though there was probably 300 fans at the game.
Posted by: canechic | July 24, 2010 at 08:57 AM
Okay...got some tix and ready to go. Gotta love the 'net. Not sure about being able to afford Ohio State to go along with a few home games this year though. Seats of all kinds were available for UNC and USF, but obviously premium games like FSU fugget about it. Best seats available right at 10am were section 138 on the UM sideline in the end zone, and for more money than visitor side 40-45 yd. lower bowl were going for vs. UNC or USF. Good thing it's illegal for us to stand outside the stadium to ask for more though, huh?
Gonna have to check about tix for NDU in a few years though.

HAHA HersheyCane good to c ya back... How'd the move go?? Hope your likin PA out their in the Sticks of Hershey. Nonetheless your now close enough to go to the Pitt game.
I got a question for the legion. I see Manny thinks Harland Gunn in the offensive line for 9/2. What was Gunn's deal coming out of HS? Wasnt he a top oline prospect? and shouldnt he be ready to dominate since he is what, a junior?
Posted by: PhillyCane | July 24, 2010 at 12:34 PM
I think he'll be a redshirt junior so this is his 4th year in the program. He was a top recruit out of Nebraska I think (macjones alert). He is developing but looks short compared to our mammoth road graders out there!

To hell with a Patrick Peterson, the last time I checked, that LSU defense wasn't looking too good in that spring scrimmage. If the allegations of Him taking that "brown paper bag" are true, then The University of Miami walked away with a helluva lot more than 60 stacks I'll tell you that...

Harland Gunn was a very highly touted OL recruit from Cornhusker Country. Don't know what's kept him from shining.

Fade the Hurricanes at Pittsburgh on September 23. They are 21-9-1 in the series against the Panthers but have lost 14 out of the last 15 matchups. They are also currently on a six game losing streak against Pitt.

Whomever wrote this is a lil slow. How could we be 21-9-1 versus Pitt, but we've lost the last 14 out of 15 matchups??? Thats 14 losses, but he just said we've only lost 9.
Damien Berry is by far our best back and he'll be in Heisman talk by midseason.
Darion Hall is gonna force Eduardo Clement to play defense (CB or safety) next season. He's gonna find himself behind James, Miller, Coop, Hall and Storm. There isn't enough carries for everyone.
