The rules according to Randy Shannon are serious but simple really:
- Nothing good happens after midnight.
- Go to class and get good grades.
- Treat yourself and others with respect.
- Do NOT get arrested or carry a firearm.
If you want to play for the University of Miami you have to be a good student. To be a good student you have to attend and pass your classes.
Orientation To UM Football 101: Go to class, follow the rules, study hard, practice hard, play harder and good things are bound to happen to you at UM.
Then, after four years on campus, you should have your college degree and a bright future ahead of you in the NFLU or in the real world of business if your talent does not take you that far.
In fact, the Hurricanes have done so well in the classroom under Shannon that they were selected along with Notre Dame for the prestigious AFCA 2009 Award for academic excellence:
The University of Miami and University of Notre Dame will share the American Football Coaches Association's 2009 Academic Achievement Award, which is presented by the Touchdown Club of Memphis. Miami and Notre Dame recorded a 100 percent graduation rate for members of its freshman football student-athlete class of 2002. This is the eighth honor for Notre Dame and the first for Miami since the award's inception.
This year's award marks the second time the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR) formula has been used to select the winner. From 1981 to 2007 the award was presented based on a formula used by the College Football Association and AFCA.
The Academic Achievement Award was established by the College Football Association in 1981. The award recognized the CFA-member Football Bowl Subdivision institution with the highest graduation rate among members of its football team. When the CFA disbanded in 1997 the AFCA stepped in to present the award and conduct a graduation rate survey that encompassed all members of the FBS.
So if you want to play for Randy Shannon you have to be a good student, good citizen and graduate.
Sounds simple right? Sounds like common sense, correct? Certainly all 85 smart and talented student-athletes on football scholarships at the University Miami could get that.
Well not so fast my friend! Apparently, some players at Miami may have the brawn but not enough brains under their helmets and may have issues with meeting these requirements.
Yesterday it was reported by Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald that there were rumors swirling around the Internet that WR Thearon Collier, DE Steven Wesley and LB Jordan Futch (seen above with one of his favorite Canespacers) may have academic problems or other issues and may face disciplinary actions from Shannon.
Read Manny's entire blog feature on the troubling situation by clicking here:
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/umiami/2010/07/are-thearon-collier-steven-wesley-off-the-team.html
Today the Miami Herald confirmed that Wesley has indeed been dismissed from the team for "undisclosed" reasons.
Some believe that it is possible that the same fate could await Collier. Collier (seen at right flashing The U) is apparently set to meet with UM coaches on Monday to review his situation.
We have learned from other sources that Collier may have already been having issues related to his academic performance and off-season conditioning before other issues are alleged to have occurred off the field.
According to one source it is believed that Jordan Futch may also be dealing with academic issues. The source indicated that Futch was tearing it up on the practice field, but not so much in the classroom. He may be facing a suspension for the first two games of the season against FAMU and @ Ohio State.
With UM thin at the linebacker position and Futch a projected starter at OLB this suspension may have the biggest impact on the Hurricanes' season.
Stay tuned for breaking news and other updates as we get them.
1ST damn it !!!!

Hurricane's Steven Wesley fails to make the grade
MIAMI HERALD STAFF
The University of Miami dismissed defensive end Steven Wesley for academic reasons, sources told the Miami Herald
Wesley, a 6-2, 250-pound senior from Bartow, Fla., has made 17 starts the last two seasons and has 44 career tackles, 10 for loss. He had three sacks last season.
Coaches may also dismiss receiver Thearon Collier.
Collier, a junior from Miami Booker T. Washington High, is expected to meet with the coaching staff on Monday, sources said.

USC, Kiffin in the news again:
Kiffin left the University of Tennessee in January after just 14 months running the program to take his self-described dream job at USC. He left behind a mattress-burning mob in Knoxville and an entire state full of furious fans who have vilified Kiffin online and in various media outlets for several months.
"I don't think the lawsuit has anything to do with the time frame, when Jeff Fisher got my message," Kiffin said.
The lawsuit claims Kiffin violated Pola's contract by making contact without permission, and Fisher admittedly was angry when Kiffin apparently contacted Pola without the customary courtesy call to Fisher. Kiffin claims he left a message for Fisher within the usual time frame of such a request, and says he smoothed over the dispute with the USC alumnus in recent days.
The lawsuit wasn't exactly the best way to get off to a good start with Pat Haden, the Trojans' new athletic director. But Kiffin said Haden was "well aware of every step" the Trojans took in rehiring Pola, who coached alongside Kiffin on Pete Carroll's staff at USC several years ago.
"He wasn't pleased, nor was I," Kiffin said of Haden's reaction to the suit.
Kiffin claimed he was forced to wait to hire a running backs coach and offensive coordinator until a few days before most football teams report to camp because the Trojans hadn't resolved the fate of running backs coach Todd McNair, whose contract wasn't renewed when it expired July 1. McNair was a key figure in the NCAA's investigation of illegal benefits for Heisman Trophy-winning tailback Reggie Bush, leading to heavy sanctions against USC last month.
Kiffin first tried to hire Vikings running backs coach Eric Bieniemy, who nearly accepted before Minnesota gave him a pay raise and a promotion to assistant head coach.
"We were very far down the road with Eric Bieniemy, thought it was done," Kiffin said.
Kiffin then turned to Pola, who teamed up with Ed Orgeron to recruit the cream of California's high-school stars during Carroll's tenure. Orgeron also returned to USC with Kiffin in January.

Let's hope we stay healthy and avoid any serious injuries during practice.
We need depth to make it through the season.

IF it's trUe T.C. is going through heartache with the lost of a child and his mother's untimely stroke, then he gets a free pass from moi.
And Shannon knows best, so he just may give T.C some type of games suspension.
Speaking of Coach Shannon, thanks to a provided link by a fellow Cane aficianando of Michael's interview with Coach, I'm thinking your Miami Hurricanes will finish the regular season with an oUtstanding 11-1 regular season.
Randy is the type of personality that likes to keep his Green n' Orange cards close to his chest, and his interview is showing a bery, bery, bery promising season in 2010. B.C.S. bowl game anyone!

Excerpt from Irvin interview with Coach
I think they've done a great job in the film room on this season. LaRon Byrd has a key, that he came and got from me, and the guys come up here on Saturday mornings, 7 o clock, watch films for about 35, 40 minutes, then they go out on the field and do their 7-on-7 and individual drills. That's how you know you got a team that wants to get it done, and that's the things that have changed over the process... but we have guys that are football guys now. Junkies. Football junkies, as you call 'em. Gym rats. And those guys are gonna take us to where we need to be at.

UM dismissed senior defensive end Steven Wesley
BY SUSAN MILLER DEGNAN
[email protected]
University of Miami senior defensive end Steven Wesley has been dismissed from the Hurricanes football team, a source close to the situation said Saturday.
The source would neither confirm nor deny whether Wesley's dismissal was related to academics. Another source said Wesley was not as well conditioned physically as expected by the program, but did not cite that as the reason for his dismissal.

Excerpt from interview regarding depth
You know, taking it one step, one play at a time, and go through the process. Cuz you know what, a lot of people doubted us last year when we had those first four games, and we went 3-1. But we have to improve on those first four games, and try and get better in this upcoming season, which I know these guys will, because they've been through the ringer now, and they understand that complacency or somebody patting you on the back can make you a little lazy. And with the way this team is now, with the competition that we have now, with the depth, which I think is unbelievable now on this football team, it's really, really gonna surprise a lot of people.

Pimp's pic is on the front page .. not good planning on the intern or whoever puts things on the website
I can't say that I understand what Pimp is going through, I can't imagine losing a child like he did. I have a friend who lost a child 5 hours after it was born - he still chokes up anytime he thinks about it .... and this guy is a 6'4 250 lb beast of a man
To say that it had a trickle down effect on him is probably being too obvious
As for Futch and Wesley - the hell is their excuse? What else do you need? You have a full ride to the University of Miami. You're getting your school paid for, room and board I assume, which also includes not having to pay a water bill, electricity bill either ... and all you have to do is take care of business in class and also at your job - which is on the field
It's always amazing to me how laziness can creep into the world of an athlete when it comes to other things - such as school
Hey, here's something to think about playas - you don't take care of business in the classroom, you're not going to see the field ... ever think about that? That goes along with people who cry & bitch & moan about the Canes not getting so-and-so player from Dade/Broward/etc. and not thinking about how possibly a certain kid might have grade issues and even if he did come to The "U", he wouldn't be able to get the grades to see the field .. so he eats up a scholly for another possible player
Ya ya, I know some people are going to give me sh*t about how these football players get up at 4 am to go workout .. go to film study for so many hours .. go lift for so many hours .. go practice for so many hours .. then have to do school work on top of that
Hey, you know what? I don't see Brandon Harris having a problem. I don't see Laron Byrd having a problem. I don't see Spence, Bailey, C-Mac, DVD, VTelemaque, Ray Ray, etc. having a problem
It's called taking care of business
Also, these kids chose their "profession" to play football, so they knew what came with it. The hours of practicing, film study, lifting and school
I was a student athlete as well - and no, those words were not an oxymoron
No one is asking these kids to be on the damn Dean's List every single year - they're just asking them something pretty easy to do and that's at least make the minimum .. THE MINIMUM .. required of them in the classroom in order to stay on the field
With Wesley gone - that just opens the doors for others to get more reps and playing time, like Dyron Dye
With Futch - hopefully the kid gets it, hopefully someone like Vilma talks with him & he gets his sh*t straight

From SS:
As for rumors, here’s the latest on wide receiver Thearon Collier and defensive end Steven Wesley. Collier has not been suspended from the team and will play this season. According to a source, he is dealing with some non-football related issues. Collier’s mom, Tranise Harris, recently had a stroke and he’s also coping with his girlfriend having a miscarriage earlier this year.
On top of that, he suffered a wrist injury during the summer. But No. 28 is expected in uniform when camp opens Thursday.
The same can’t be said for Wesley. A source said he’s expected to be ruled academically-ineligible. He will likely pursue a transfer.

Six- Just a brief Rays comment
What the heck was the Qualls deal about???
I know Balfour is out 4-6 weeks but come on, a guy dealing with his own injury and a 8.29 ERA and an opponents avg. of .363
Rays only gave up the usual PTBNL but I still dont understand what the bullpen gained by this with Hellickson on his way
Posted by: Sebastian | July 31, 2010 at 02:51 PM
Sebastian - with this guy, you have to see him in a different uni with a different team I believe
I've got no idea what they saw, then again, I remember Brewers fans wanting to get rid of Balfour as soon as possible as well
I also have complete faith in the Rays front office - they're doing pretty well in trades, with more hits than misses
Even though Delmon Young is finally coming into his own this year and I didn't like the trade at the time it happened b/c I saw enormous potential from DY .... the Rays got Garza and Bartlett back
The Rays brought in Zobrist and Wheeler (who I still am not sold on) from the Astros
They brought in a diehard Cane fan, Sean Rodriguez, along with a hard throwing lefty and a utility player for Kaz
The Shoppach deal hasn't really panned out exactly that greatly ... but it's not that bad either
They brought in Soriano
Ya, they did bring in Burrell - but hey, if that's one of their only misses, that's fine, b/c they still have the 2nd best record in baseball
So, I dunno about Qualls. But, I'm willing to give the Rays office a chance with him
Also, I know that the Rays are in serious talks to get Manny Ramirez here .... I'm not a huge fan of him, yes he can absolutely mash, but imagine him as the DH in the Rays lineup? He also really wants nothing to do with playing the outfield

How about the Yankees as well, just missing out on Cliff Lee .... so they go get Kearns and Berkman instead to hit in their Little League sized ballpark
I was telling a couple of my boys up at work, die hard Rays fans, that just wait - the Yankees will bring in a couple of guys like they always do at the trade deadline
When you have pockets that deep & an office that is willing to spend & do whatever it takes to win, it always happens
That's why it's still good & bad about teams like the Rays who have a $70 Million payroll, but yet compete with the $200+ Million payroll of the Yankees and the $180+ Million payroll of the Red Sox
It's bad in the sense that it shows a small payroll team can still ball out, so that doesn't help in any kind of argument for having a salary cap - which is basically a complete pipe dream
It's good in the sense that you see a team like the Yankees or Red Sox, who spend all that money - but yet still go get even more players and spend even more money, b/c they feel threatened by a team like the Rays
F.U. Yankees and Red Sox

The few Rays people I know, which arent as high up as the ones you know
They dont know if the Rays will pull the trigger now for ManRam or wait until he passes thru waivers and hope he doesnt have a claim put on him. Those guys told me that the White Sox might be a team that would put a claim on him blocking ManRom from coming here
I say if they really want to do it then do it now
Just dont give up the future to do it
I also dont see B.J. going anywhere. I might be the only one in the 813/727 that is happy to see that for the rest of the season

The new Marlins stadium at the old Orange Bowl site is going to be the BIGGEST waste of taxpayers money in the history of the State of Florida.

This does ultimately suck. Not as an excuse for the kids involved, but its just unfortunate no matter if a kid chose to be lazy or there are outside situations involved or whatever else. Its just not good news, so it does suck.
We really need Futch, especially in Columbus.
If its true that Wesley was academically and physically out of shape, then that says that he's mentally out of shape and isn't ready to contribute to this team concept. He's let them down, especially as a fifth year senior. This does effect the team.

Wesley DOES NOT affect the team, imo.
He was a JAG (JUST ANOTHER GUY).
They moved him to TE two springs ago so they could have a body running routes.
He was good adainst the run and got some (3) sacks last year for the first time.
He wore the orange and green so I root for the guy and wish it would've worked out but he is the least of our concerns. IMO it's actually a blessing as we can see more of the new young talent.

Marlins pickup LHP Will Ohman from the Orioles for RHP Rick Vander Hurk
It doesnt look like a spectacular deal but anytime you can get a quality lefty in the pen its always a good move

I hope Collier is just going to get a redshirt so once again, we can see what the other talented receivers got. I beleive they (KT&DJ) have more upside than Pimp.
I hope Futch gets his wake up call and just misses a game.
