Your Miami Hurricanes got busy on Friday for their first of three two-a-day practices of the Fall. While the big hits could be heard all around the 305 UM was also announcing two big events for fans in South Florida.
The first event is a casual, family type gathering called "Canes Carnivale" scheduled for Saturday, August 28th at the Bank United Center on the lovely UM campus in Coral Gables (see below for details).
The second event is a more formal weekday luncheon on Tuesday, September 7 in Fort Lauderdale with Head Coach Randy Shannon at Timpano Chophouse on Las Olas Boulevard (see below for details).
The reports out of Greentree Field is that he heat (the 'Canes practiced in mid-90's afternoon heat) and the intensity (there were a few altercations) of the first two-a-day practice session picked up significantly.
There were several heated confrontations between the offense and defense and these incidents clearly reflected the increased enthusiasm the team has going into the 2010 season.
Several great battles are going on during practice at a number of positions on both sides of the ball as the 85 players compete for one of the 22 starting jobs on the 2010 roster.
The UM Athletic Department provided the following information about the afternoon session on the official University of Miami Hurricane web site @ www.hurricanesports.com:
Defensive Highlights
- Adewale Ojomo, Sean Spence and Brandon Harris swarmed to the ball on rushing plays.
- Spence was solid at his linebacker position all afternoon with good blitzes and dropping back into coverage.
- Micanor Regis and Allen Bailey won the early battle for the defensive line, blowing past offensive linemen Tyler Horn and Harland Gunn. Bailey and Regis combined for a great hit on running back Mike James in 11-on-11 work.
- Freshman defensive back Devont'a Davis made some good plays in the secondary, making good with his time on the field.
- Brandon Harris had an amazing interception on the sideline in 11-on-11 action. Harris was solid all afternoon from his cornerback position, showing great coverage in a variety of defensive packages, as well as coming up for big open-field tackles.
- Fellow defensive back Ryan Hill had an interception return for a touchdown.
- Sophomore linebacker C.J. Holton made a tremendous tackle on running back Eduardo Clements.
- Ramon Buchanan slipped into the offensive backfield several times for pressure and sacks on the quarterbacks with blitzes.
- The entire defensive backfield had lots of solid coverage on the wide receivers, resulting in coverage sacks and tackles-for-loss.
- The backfield included Brandon Harris, Devont'a Davis and DeMarcus Van Dyke.
Offensive Highlights
- Storm Johnson began practice with a long run, assisted by the offensive line opening a huge hole for the freshman to scamper through.
- Aldarius Johnson caught a touchdown pass from Jacory Harris on a long ball fade route.
- Harris hooked up with wide receiver Leonard Hankerson for a nice reception of about 40 yards, beating the defensive coverage of Van Dyke and JoJo Nicolas.
- Quarterback Spencer Whipple completed a long pass to lengthy wide receiver Tommy Streeter.
- Offensive linemen Jared Wheeler and Andrew Tallman opened a huge hole for Whipple to run through.
- Hankerson made an amazing catch on the sideline from Whipple just before falling out-of-bounds.
- Quarterback Alonzo Highsmith, Jr. and Mike James hooked up for a good run-and-catch.
- The second string offensive line gave good protection for the quarterback and opened holes for the running backs, using the blocks of Clive Walford and Billy Sanders.
- Running back Damien Berry ended practice with several good cuts, giving his offensive line time to open holes, and then reading the holes well and exploding through them.
Different matchups....teams with better and more weapons...VT for example is much more dangerous than OSU. Ponder is a much better QB than Pryor.

The University of Miami football team registered another preseason Top 15 ranking as the Hurricanes enter the 2010 season ranked No. 15 in the Sports IIlustrated preseason poll. The `Canes are already preseason ranked No. 10 in the ESPN.com College Football Power Rankings and No. 13 in the USA Today Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The `Canes, who are coming off a 9-4 campaign in 2009, open against Florida A&M on Sept. 2 at Sun Life Stadium.
The Hurricanes return a number of key student-athletes to this year's team, including All-America cornerback Brandon Harris, All-ACC defensive end Allen Bailey, kicker/punter Matt Bosher and linebacker Colin McCarthy as well as junior quarterback Jacory Harris.
Again, six teams that the Hurricanes will face in 2010 are ranked in the Sports Illustrated Preseason Top 25: No. 2 Ohio State, No. 10 Virginia Tech, No. 13 North Carolina, No. 14 Georgia Tech, No. 16 Pitt and No. 25 Florida State.

MORE FROM WWW.HURRICANESPORTS.COM:
Practice No. 10 Saturday morning for the University of Miami football team saw the `Canes challenging each other to be better along with head coach Randy Shannon who wanted his players to be sharp coming off their first two-a-day Friday. The Hurricanes worked for nearly 2 ½ hours on the Greentree Practice Fields taking more time working on 11-on-11 drills from third down blitz , inside run and red zone action.
The Hurricanes have another 8 a.m. practice session Sunday morning before holding the second two-a-day of camp on Monday.
Upperclassmen Continue to Lead
As has been the theme for much of camp, older more experienced players have taken the time to coach up the younger players. During last Saturday's Season Ticket Holder and UM Employee practice, there was a moment when redshirt junior safety JoJo Nicolas and junior cornerback Brandon Harris had freshman Kacy Rodgers on the sideline showing him how to read certain formations.
Today's practice saw senior linebacker Colin McCarthy taking his turn. McCarthy was approached by junior Jordan Futch, who needed some help understanding a defensive call to make sure he was doing his job properly. McCarthy, the most experienced player on the defense since coming in 2006 when head coach Randy Shannon was still coaching linebackers, explained to Futch where he needed to be.

Thanks for sharing UMike. Glad Marve learned his lesson and is getting it done in the classroom. I saw Marve play in high school and thought he was very good. When Marve showed up at UM, I was happy because he was a clear upgrade over Wright and Freeman. But, Jacory is a better QB for UM's pro style offense and Marve did not want to stay, study and compete.
When Coker was coach, UM players who cannot win a starting job transfered to Memphis. Now, UM players who cannot earn playing time transfer to elite football programs like USC or Purdue.
Its a testament as to how good Shannon and Co. evaluate, project, recruit and develop talent in Coral Gables. Coaches from elite programs want our third string players.

"When Coker was coach, UM players who cannot win a starting job transfered to Memphis."
I could forgive Coker even that -- IF the players who DID win starting jobs had been better.

On the recruiting front... I guess the Wilder kid from Tampa Plant is going to announce his choice this week. I have to believe he is being recruited by the Canes as a linebacker because he runs a 4.65 40 yard dash. I mean, how fast does Alan Bailey run the 40? Don't think Wilder could break the scout team lineup at the U at tailback with 4.65 speed. He will probably end up at FU since Urban has looked at him with a straight face and told him he would play rb for the gators.

Like I said, if you guys are bored, you can stop by the station after the game for a few minutes to see the toys I get to play with - it's about 10 minutes away and on the way back to Orlando, right off 275
You can follow me if you want to the Fruit Dome & we'll take a different way to get to Lot 2 where there probably won't be as much traffic

I previously looked at national champs over the last 10 years and noted that ay least 3 of them (Okla., LSU and Fla.) had 3-4 losses the year before winning a national championship. I think this team is poised for a special BCS run. The tough schedule actually sets up nicely for the Canes to make a good BCS bowl.
I think this is the year we also see the benefit of the hire of the Whipple in his second year with this group. We will see remarkable progress where he puts up points like he did with UMass, about 35-40 points per game. This Canes team will make their own legacy, unlike any we have seen before. I see a series of BCS runs for years to come. The Canes are loaded in a way that I have not seen since the early 2000s, and NFL scouts will make regular visits to Coral Gables just as they did a decade ago. NFL-U is back on track.

Facts/Opinions/Rumors
Urban Meyer–Color Me Gone!
By: Thomas R. Smyth—August 14th, 2010—4:15 PM
New York-Rumors are running rampant that University of Florida Gators Head Football Coach Urban Meyer has been in highly secretive meetings with Gator school President Bernie Machen and Athletic Director Jeremy Foley in recent days discussing his immediate departure from the Gators program…again!
After the University of Alabama battered the Gators in the SEC Championship game Meyer on December 26th, 2009 abruptly resigned citing physical health problems, while many believed those problems were really mental health issues. At the time his daughter Nicki, 18, hugged him and said, “I get my daddy back.” He then stunningly turned around offering a plethora of disturbing reasons for his dubious actions and decided to rejoin the team.
It is believed that Machen and Foley are trying to convince Meyer to stay onboard through the October 16th Mississippi State game, which is followed by a two week bye, that will allow the new head coach to take the reins who is believed to be Gator Offensive Coordinator Steve Addazio, a lightly regarded replacement.
Florida has had numerous legal problems with 28 players arrested and the recently announced wide ranging NCAA investigation into the Gator football program. It is that very investigation that has those in the know believing that is the reason for Meyer’s decision to leave the program.
We will be updating this story when warranted

Capt O has been busy explaining how the 2010 Canes are actually the 2007 Canes he told us would destroy college football as we know it.
Sooner or later the Capt is going to be 100% correct, and I think he might be dead on this time.
Posted by: solarcane | August 14, 2010 at 11:49 PM
Yeah... I got a good feeling about this years team too. I say 12-1, ACC champs & BCS bowl. NCAA will find a way to snub us out of the title game. Leaving some poor high profile victim to suffer the wrath... What say you?
