No. 1 Tampa Plant, Florida
COACH: Robert Weiner

LAST SEASON: 13-1, Florida Class 5A State Champs

FINAL 2009 RANKING: No. 17 in RivalsHigh 100

Coming off back-to-back state titles in Florida, the Tampa (Fla.) Plant Panthers have dealt with expectation.

Starting the season as the No. 1 team in the RivalsHigh 100 is something else altogether.

"When you have won like we have won and have the players coming back we have, expectations are going to happen," he said. "We lost 44 seniors after our first state title and we lost 43 seniors from last year's team. So this is a completely different group that is facing the expectations placed on them. We have to approach each year differently, rankings or not."

The rankings, and therefore expectations, are certainly there for a team that has won the Florida Class 4A state title in 2008 and the Class 5A state title in 2009.

It also doesn't hurt that the Panthers are bringing back one of the best players in the country, James Wilder Jr., and a two-time state championship quarterback, Phillip Ely.

Wilder, the son of the former NFL great by the same name, is ranked as the No. 3 overall prospect in the Rivals 100 for the Class of 2011. Where he'll play next season will be known soon.

Weiner confirmed on Monday to FlaVarsity.com that Wilder will announce his college decision on Aug. 18, likely around 5 p.m.

Ungar - I remember canechic always talking about seeing that movie ... I think that trailer you posted will be the most of the movie that i'll ever watch, ha

Maybe it is in our male DNA to just laugh at slapstick type humor, b/c I re-watched Barrymore getting tagged in the head at least 10 times

Even though it was a movie, she deserved to get tagged for bringing a laptop

The chick in real life, you could tell she was just probably doing the good girlfriend thing by going to the game with the idiot .. and she ends up having little red traintracks on her arm from the Rawlings coming at her at about 85 mph, simply b/c of her idiot having no sense of chivalry or how to catch a ball ... he basically pulled a Leggett

I'd be thoroughly disappointed in my daughter for being with a kid like that and I'd be even more thoroughly disappointed in myself for not raising her to have better judgement in boys .... he could probably be a really nice guy (I'm giving him tons of credit considering how he sounded in the interview with the reporter) - but he just showed his hand in how protective he is of her

Quick questions:
1) Does anyone else think that Damien Berry holds the ball too far from his body? I watched some footage of the FAMU game and a few others and he's got that ball swinging around. That needs to be changed. Last thing we need is fumbles in our big games - especially if he's breaking through a hole.

2) Collier had perhaps the most reliable hands on the team last year (forget the errant jump on that one pass intended for Byrd against Wisc, and the drop on 4th down - that was a poorly thrown and short pass; he still made a great TD grab). I loved his sideline catch against Charleston Southern back in 2008. Who becomes our punt returner? Who becomes our WR screen, slot cut across guy? Collier was made for that spot. I'm not sold on Thompkins just yet because he was beat out for that spot 2 years in a row. And where is Davon Johnson? Wasn't he a burner back in HS?

1)....Yes, he did. I'll bet that's one of the first things Cassano worked on with him and one that he works on everyday in practice. Recall, Soldinger gave Cassano high praise.

2)....KT is a baller. Watch the Spring game if you any doubts about him replacing TC. KT was rather small coming out of high school and maybe not the most disciplined but he's improved and has more moves after the catch than TC. His hands are very good but we'll see if they're as clutch as TC. I think he will be.

No word from Swasey, but this year's numbers must be off the charts. I read in Manny's column that the strongest bench on the team is now Bunche (a 6'6-7" 310 lbs lineman benching 435+), and that Benjamin is the fastest, but that is it.

I've seen this year's team and they definitely pass the eyeball test. I thought last year's team looked good, but this year's team looks even more impressive across the board. Bigger, in shape and faster across the board.

Ungar:

From the last blog you asked about which two teams had to lose to let the #4 U win its 1st championship back in the 1984 OB by way of taking down the Cornhuskers.

The answer was only a definite one team had to lose while the U took care of business, the Texas Longhorns. They were one of only 2 undefeated teams, and the U was playing the other one. Texas lost to UGa in the Cotton Bowl. #3 Auburn was a one-loss team, along with the U at #4/5 (depending on which poll you believed between AP/UPI) and Illinois (the other #4/5). Auburn beat Michigan in the Sugar, and didn't look very good in so doing, vs. a mediocre Wolverine team. Illinois got lambasted in the Rose by UCLA. Had Illinois handily beaten UCLA, they might have had a shot, but probably not given who the U took down (the supposed best college team of all time). Had Auburn played a higher quality opponent and taken them down, Auburn probably would have pulled it out, but they played Michigan (I think they lost 4 games that year pre-bowl, but I'm not 100% on that one) and barely won.

I know. My wife says if I remembered things like I remember the U history I could be dangerous, but thankfully I don't! Thanks for letting me take the trip down memory lane. I loved being at that game in Tally that year when the Canes came back in the last 7 min. of the game with a TD and FG. That first championship season was the best.

JCane

Wilder isn't likely to pick the U, even though months ago he had professed interested in the U if going for RB. The U is pretty well stacked at the position. If he does come here it'd say something about his confidence, which I don't think is on the low side. Now, if he goes on the defensive side it could change things. I'm concerned about where he could go, as I'd hate to see him end up a terd, a potential option. the usual contenders are still there with Bama, FU, UGa and FSU (likely USF is a pretender, but since it's in Tampa he's gotta play the game, USC is in trouble these days, UTenn is a big question mark, I can't see him heading to GTech but surprises happen). One recruiting site lists his main five as the U, Bama, FU, UGa and FSU. Another doesn't mention UGa but includes GTech, S. Carolina, USC, UTenn, USF, UMiami, FU, FSU and Bama.

8/8 could be interesting, as I'm curious to see where he ends up. He's a player. I don't expect him to be a Cane, but I hope he becomes one. If not, c'est la vie. Our class should be a nice one regardless.

UNC is not going to let either of their players who attended the party play until they are cleared. Stewart Mandel says that a former player has all but admitted that they received money last season.

I'm guessing that this is the case for almost all the kids/teams that were implicated. The wheels of justice move slowly, but when they move, watch out!

Go 'canes!

P.S. Does anyone think Hurtt was the one texting and calling for UM?

Six

I remember talking to Wilder Jr. and he said he really .. and I mean really .. wants to be a RB in college

He said that Urban Myth wants him as a LB, but that Myth told him that they'd look at him this year at RB and what he does there

Hey Urbie, was last year not good enough for you? His run in the damn state championship game against Bradenton Manatee made every freakin highlight reel imaginable ... along with his run against Lakeland in the playoffs, that happened right in front of me

You can watch it here, on one of my videos:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSu0RDMja0A

I'd like to see him end up at UGA or Bama. It's funny b/c a guy I know that works at Hibbet Sports Store in the mall across the street from me, said Wilder was in there not too long ago, buying up a bunch of FSU gear. It was right after he stayed up in Tally for a weekend visiting, so, he probably just got caught all up in it. Didn't Jacory also mess around with people up at Northwestern after he visited Oregon, by wearing an Oregon hat for a couple of days? Hell, I have a UCLA shirt that I wear sometimes - mainly b/c it was on sale at Old Navy for $3 and I'm a huge John Wooden fan, ha ..... it's not like I'm a Freddie Mitchell or Kareem Abdul Ja-Blunt fan

Six

Also, since I've been doing the MMA show on the radio now for a couple of months, I've gotten mixed up in a lot of things concerning the MMA

So, this is funny, b/c it involves an ex-UFC fighter and an ex-UTexas Longhorn LB who was All-Big 12 for 3 years

Rashad Bobino is the ex-UTexas guy. He was a LB for them, about 5'11 240 lbs, his last year was 2008. Well, he was caught on video tape, walking up behind a girl outside of a club in Austin and punching her in the back of the head - basically putting her to sleep on the ground

Roger Huerta, an ex-UFC fighter, who fought at the 155 lb weight division, he's about 5'8, confronted Bobino about it

Bobino basically told Roger to f-off. Roger wasn't down with that. Bobino then proceeded to take off his shirt and wanted to get down with his fists .... dumb dumb move. Huerta was a pro-MMA fighter, even though he was in the 155 lb weight division, he'd still wreck a lot of guys bigger than him

And ... he did. I don't know how many people have seen the video, but, after you clearly see Bobino punching the girl in the back of the head, you see Roger running up to him ... then after the camera guy is panning around the crowd like freakin Cloverfield is happening, you see Bobino with his shirt off and Roger with his shirt off (I never understood why you need to take your shirt off to fight) ... then you see Bobino start to back off while Roger is following him ... then you see the cameraman go back to his Cloverfield, Blair Witch Project camerawork panning around the crowd .... then you finally see Bobino on the ground, with Roger above him, dropping some bombs on his face

Now. Bobino looks to be around 250+ lbs in that video ... Roger looks around 170 lbs, his walking around weight while he was in the UFC was about 168, since he had to cut to 155 to make weight

He was outweighed by Bobino by about a good 80 lbs and 2 inches ... but Bobino still ended up on the ground, all messed up and had to go to the hospital

Moral of the story - if you hit a girl, esp. the punkass way Bobino did, this is what should happen to you. Someway, somehow, magically, an MMA fighter should appear out of nowhere and then proceed to beat your ass down

Props to Roger Huerta. I already was interested in him and had some respect for him b/c of his horrific childhood he endured .... but this made me an even bigger fan of his

Book'em Horns !

I've seen the video. Am glad Rashad Bobino has been named. Even if the courts don't convict him, he's got something to haunt his a__ for decades. The Internet never forgets.

Want to hire him, do a business deal with him, patronize his store. All it will take is a quick Google and "Oh yeah, you're the guy that punched the woman. Forget it"

As for being remembered as an All Big-12 linebacker for 3 years, he can kiss that good-bye.

He'll be better off changing his name like Jeff Gillooly did (Google him, you'll see why)

Ungar

JCane, Michigan did the job for us, that is what matters.

Had Illinois won, they might have taken some votes away, but not changed the destined outcome. Auburn winning big while we take a 1 point classic squeaker, we face trouble.

I am so glad we settled that question the next year, removing Auburn's complaint about our leapfrogging them to the title.
