I know, I know football practice has started and all you want to hear about is who is "flying around" out there at Greentree Field in Coral Gables.
Or how big and agile Seantrel Henderson really is. Or how Mike James is pushing Damien Berry for the starting position at RB.
Or how maybe about why Aldarius Johnson cut his hair, re-dedicated himself and is now in great shape and looking forward to an outstanding season at WR. Or how Graig Cooper and Jordan Futch are recuperating from their knee surgeries.
We have and will continue to bring you as many updates as is humanly possible over the next several weeks leading right up until September 2 when your Miami Hurricanes begin to play games that will count for the 2010 season.
But on Sunday several Canespacers decided to take a break from the two-a-day practices and go and catch some Rays over in Tampa. No not at the beach but at The Trop where the Tampa Bay Rays were playing the Baltimore Orioles in a Sunday send off game of the three game series.
Bloggers Six (L), RaizeCane (C), his friend Tim (R) and yours truly (86Cane) got a chance to see how the other half lives when we had the opportunity to sit behind home plate at Tropicana Field and watch the Rays beat Baltimore 3-2 and take the series from the Orioles.
Tampa now sits one game behind the Damn Yankees in the battle for AL East lead.
We were close up and personal as we watched Evan Langoria as he warmed up to take his hacks at the plate. But it was Carl Crawford who went yard for the Rays in this contest.
RaizeCane was up to his usual fun and games, Captain Morgan constantly in hand (he was NOT driving).
Longoria was in a fan friendly mood as he chatted with his teammates behind home plate.
And wherever you go please be sure to remember that Canespace rules ALWAYS apply, not matter the sport, the team, or the opponent:
- U gotta show up.
- U gotta stay until the end.
- Good things are bound to happen!
Don't even ask me how I do it, I just do.
I'm just sayin...

Ungar - you can ask 86 exactly what I said before the game started
We were all standing there, inhaling food from the Whitney Bank Club and I pointed to the top of the dugouts where the Rays "girls" were and I told him - the Marlins have full grown "women" and we have these freakin "girls"
I agree completely on the difference between the Marlins Mermaids and the Tampa Bay Teeniebopper
I kept looking around for Chris Hansen from MSNBC To Catch A Predator, to walk around the crowd & nail guys for looking at the Rays "girls"
Posted by: Six | August 16, 2010 at 01:09 PM
Byrd pulled a hammy. Didn't practice. As of right now, he's just "nicked".
Posted by: 360Cane | August 16, 2010 at 01:09 PM
raizecane - ya brah, it was a great time .... if we had more time to just sit around and yap, I've got a ton more stories to tell
86 got a few of them while we were sitting in traffic, about how some female sports anchors I know of that moved up in the world b/c of .. well ..... how can I put this nicely - orally humping? other people in the business that they thought could help them out
I know of some for a fact that you see on national television for NCAA and NFL football, but I will not name them on here
There are some upper echelon type reporters for the 4 letter network in Bristol, CT, that I know of as well who are married - and how did Ludacris put it? have Hoes In Different Area Codes? Ya, that's exactly it
When they make their trips during NFL football season, they make sure to stop off in certain towns - Tampa being one of them - and call a certain female I know, hell, a bunch of people in the media know
Why am I not writing a book about this stuff and making money?

BTW, Steve Gorten already coming through with some news: This was off his twitter account.
"The U" DVD release party, hosted by allCanes, is 2nite. It starts at 10 p.m. at Titanic Brewing Company with director signing at midnight
Former Canes to be at "The U" DVD release party: Lamar Thomas, Bennie Blades, Tolbert Bain, Najeh Davenport, Don Soldinger, Brett Perriman.
Anyone going to be there taking pictures for us married shut-ins? you guys DO know where the Titanic Brewing Company is, right? Maybe Steve will be there and a certain ear-bender can get in the good word for the Canes fans?

Interesting!
9. When trailing in fourth quarter: Ohio State
Some fans might argue that Ohio State's Jim Tressel is too conservative in his playcalling, but the man knows how to hold a lead. Since Tressel took over before the 2001 season, the Buckeyes are 82-6 when leading at halftime. They have been just as good at holding leads in the fourth quarter, allowing only four late comebacks by opponents in the past eight seasons. Under Tressel, OSU hasn't allowed an opponent to come back while holding a lead of seven points or more entering the fourth quarter.

we have a track record of coming apart, or suffering bad breaks in close games in the fourth quarter.
I say let it all out right from the get go.
Build up a tremendous lead and let the defense feast and take chances rather than, stumble around being conservative and counting on Bosher to come off the bench and save us.

I wonder when the day comes when everything Canes happens in the 21st century and it isn't compared one way or the other with the 2001 Canes.
These kids maybe faster, smarter, better conditioned and more disciplined than the 2001 Canes, but they have achieved nothing even remotely close to being mentioned in the same breath.
Let's win the ACC then start building the pedestals

Somewhat of an interesting read with a few good points:
What's hot (and not) for 2010
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/preview10/columns/story?columnist=schlabach_mark&id=5465287
Highlights:
4. Tyrod: If Hokies QB Tyrod Taylor improves as a passer, Virginia Tech might be a legit threat for a BCS national title. Taylor and running backs Darren Evans and Ryan Williams form one of the country's best backfields, and the Hokies are always stout on defense and special teams.
6. Week 2 games: Grab the remote. The second Saturday of the season offers the best lineup of games. Miami travels to Ohio State. Penn State visits Alabama. Florida State heads west to Oklahoma. Michigan travels to Notre Dame. Oregon heads east to Tennessee. It's must-see TV.
12. ACC: The league is going to be better, but it won't be great until Florida State and Miami return to prominence. The ACC still hasn't had two of its teams play in BCS bowl games in the same season.
16. Eye-black messages: Reggie Bush and Tim Tebow, two Heisman Trophy winners, highlighted the trend of writing messages in the eye black under their eyes. The NCAA banned such messages during the offseason.
Posted by: 360Cane | August 16, 2010 at 03:16 PM
Captain Optimist,
Not sure if that was a sarcastic post or not... There is NO WAY IN HELL that this team can even be on the same field as the 2001 team. Come on! There's one thing to have some high hopes for this team (which I do), but there is another thing to put WAY unrealistic expectations on a team. Just my two cents, nothing personal to you...
Posted by: THE MAN | August 16, 2010 at 11:27 AM
>>>>>>>
I thought that way too until I watched the entire 2001 Rose Bowl last night.
That team was loaded on the front end but after that there was a steep drop-off.
This team has a greater overall collection of talent on both sides of the ball, they're just younger.
This team simply doesn't have the clear superstars like that one, like Reed, Vilma, Johnson, Shockey, DJ, Portis and the coming superstars McGahee, Gore, Taylor and K-2...
But on offense that team basically had three legit weapons...Shockey, Portis and Andre, throw in Beard on occasion if you want.
This team??? Has that many and that dangerous a group on the WR corps alone.
You'll see on 9-11 the beginnings of it. By the 10th game you'll really see it all coming together.
Mark my words. Or better yet go watch that NC game and judge for yourself...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eSM2XWIyUM&feature=related
The main difference is they had more upperclassmen talent than this team does. That's why I said it's somewhat contingent on Byrd and TB staying for their senior year.

Twenty teams with best title shot
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/preview10/news/story?id=5467170
14. Miami The nonconference schedule is brutal once again, with games at Ohio State and Pittsburgh. But the Hurricanes do get Florida State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech at home. Tough ACC road games at Clemson and Georgia Tech might negate those.
Posted by: 360Cane | August 16, 2010 at 03:20 PM
Tune in for these 20 games
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/preview10/news/story?id=5465584
3. Miami at Ohio State, Sept. 11
This game is symbolic of so much -- the last time they met, Ohio State hung on to win the national title in a huge upset. That was the Buckeyes' last victory in the title game. For the Hurricanes, that game was the beginning of a downward slide. Now, with Miami on the verge of being completely back, they meet again with Ohio State as the favorite.
10. Florida State at Miami, Oct. 9
The talk in Florida is that both programs are on the rise. This game will show whether Miami still has a step on the Seminoles, or whether new coach Jimbo Fisher is making bigger strides than expected.

Half truth there Sol. We've come back in the 2nd half and lost some leads in the 4th.
The only real history we have is depending on underclassmen in every game, for better or worse.
Thankfully that will now be history.

That's because they play the same candy-azz Big Ten teams and Ohio league squads every year and don't face real offense but once every few years.
It's also because if they're losing they've already lost by the 4th.
I'd say holding off Oregon was easily their most impressive defensive feat in a long time.

6. Randy Shannon or Jimbo Fisher? Fisher has the tough task of replacing a legend and rebuilding a once-storied program. Shannon has the tough task of rebuilding a once-storied program. The advantage might go to Shannon on this one because he seems to be one step ahead.
