Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder recovering from triceps contusion
Injury affected him during Seminoles' victory on Saturday against BYU.

September 20, 2010|By Andrew Carter, Orlando Sentinel

TALLAHASSEE — Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder will be limited in practice this week while he attempts to recover from a triceps contusion, coach Jimbo Fisher said on Monday.

Ponder suffered the injury during the Seminoles' Sept. 11 defeat at Oklahoma, where he absorbed a blow from an Oklahoma player's helmet on the back of his throwing arm.

He is still hurting following the game at Virginia...

DZ8 - ya, it is definitely one of the few real perks of the job that I have .. getting to meet and talk with coaches, players, etc. and ask them things that I really do want to know - not just lame questions, I'm talking about some major insight

Speaking of which, check this out

Tonight, I get a call from my boss, he says that a crew from the CBS station in Dallas is going to come and do a live shot from our station - outside - b/c they're there covering the Rangers for the ALDS against the Rays

He asks if I can go set up the handheld HD camera for them outside, set up the mic, go hook up the high def cable, etc. and that they should be there before our 11pm show, b/c they're going to do their sports segment for their CBS station back in Dallas, outside of our building

They wanted palm trees and all that crap to give that Florida feel

I'm got all that stuff set up for them, left the equipment outside for them - they provide their own IFB, sticks for the camera, and lighting

We get a call inside the station at about 10:46pm, and it's the Dallas crew outside, telling us they're here. I tell them I'll go to the front to let them in and meet them. I head up front, go thru the lobby, see one of the guys at the front door, open the door, shake his hand and talk with him about where he should park and where I have the equipment set up for him

I let them in the gate, they drive around the building to where I told them and park

The guy I met gets out of the car, he's the photojournalist. The anchor then gets out of the car, kinda tall, looks like he probably played some ball back in the day. I introduce myself to him

He shakes my hand and says "Babe Laufenberg". I said, "Babe Laufenberg?" He said, "Yes sir" ... I said "I used to watch you when I was a little kid and you were with the Dallas Cowboys, on the same team as Troy Aikman and Steve Walsh". He's all smiles, probably surprised some guy in Tampa, Florida even knows who he is

He asked if I was a Cowboys fan, I said my entire family is b/c they're all from Texas and they pushed it on me since I was tiny ... but I became a Bucs fan in 1993 when I moved to Tampa. He then asked if I was a Rangers fan b/c my entire family was from Texas - I turned my head and showed him my green Rays hat I had on backwards and told him I've been a Rays fan since 1997

He was a super cool guy .. super nice. We talked some old Cowboys football, I even started mentioning all the Canes that were on the Cowboys teams he was on: Randy Shannon, Daniel Stubbs, Alonzo Highsmith, Jimmie Jones, The Playmaker, Steve Walsh

He wanted to go inside the station and see what it looked like, said he's always curious to see other stations. I gave him a quick tour, seeing how we were about to go on the air in 5 minutes. Showed him the newsroom, the control room and the main studio

He then asked me if I was going to be back tomorrow so we could talk some more. He then asked me if I could do him a huge favor ...

He wanted to know where the Sun Dome was b/c he's a HUGE Bob Dylan fan and said that Dylan is in Tampa this Thursday at this place called the Sun Dome. He wants to go see Dylan before he has to head back to Dallas

Awesome. So ya, Babe Laufenberg. I had no idea that he was the sports anchor at the CBS station in Dallas and also he has a radio show and does play-by-play I believe for the Cowboys on the radio sometimes

Here he is here

http://cbs11tv.com/bios/Babe.Laufenberg.KTVT.9.479360.html

Again, one of the few perks of my job. The pay blows, but, the people you get to meet and talk with is pretty damn cool

James, from Haines City, played in all 13 games for the Hurricanes in 2009, mostly as a fullback. He carried 15 times for 46 yards and a touchdown, and had 15 catches for 105 yards. He still occasionally plays at fullback, and at 6-0 and 213 pounds, is a power runner, much like Berry. And like Berry last season, James has had to be especially patient, relieving Berry, and most recently, Miller, at the end of physically wearing games such as the one against Clemson.

After 37 days and three grueling road games at Ohio State, Pittsburgh and Clemson, the Hurricanes will come home Saturday to Sun Life Stadium.

And they'll return as the state's top-ranked team in The Associated Press poll. For the first time since Dec. 4, 2005, the 13th-ranked Hurricanes (3-1, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) are the highest-ranked Florida team in that poll.

j.w.-- i don't think jacory is 100% healthy. he's taken some wicked shots-- and it doesn't help that he's such a bean pole. nevertheless, he's a warrior and a fighter. many have been bashing him, but if he's playing hurt (again) he's due our support. also-- i love the kid's resiliency-- most qb's would have folded by now given the picks's he's thrown (and when he's thrown them). he just keeps coming back-- keeps chunking it. i love the kid and i think he'll get things cooking even moreso-- just watch. the kid's got too much heart.

we're going to need him against fs-shoes. i thought i read somewhere this a.m. that they are #5 in the country against the run. we haven't been world beaters with our running game against good competition. gonna need j12's arm (and his legs!)

Rodney Harris also told the Sun Sentinel the surgically repaired right thumb on his son's throwing hand has not bothered him and is "100 percent."

I'm not worried about Jacory.

Everyone has a different way they express discomfort or their tolerance to pain.

You see it with the people you work with everyday.
Some people complain all day about their sinus condition, or the bruise they got falling off a horse over the weekend.
Some limp, grimace, or complain because it's what they have been doing since they were kids.
Some are in much more pain and never let it show.
It's not a weakness it's just a persons nature.

By game time adrenaline and painkillers will be out in full force on both sides of the ball.
The Miami FSU game will bring out the best in both teams, guys are going to fly around banged up or not.

Aces & Canes

Come on guys,
I know we are coming off a big road win, but where is everyone coming up with a blow out of FSU? I'm all for it , but history says other wise. These games are usually close and intense. Do we have the potential to blow them out, hell yea. I think the road team has won the past 4 meetings. All I know is I can't wait to see this one. It's starting to get that old school feel again. I'll hold off on a score prediction for now. Who knows I may be on the kool aid by then!!!

8:00 game means all day tailgate party .... that could be dangerous around here .....lol

Go Canes

mi@mic@ne

The games that have been close have favored us at home... all those wide rights and the last one to make up for the wide rites ... was wide left....it made Bubba feel a little better.
But this game may have a different flavor since Bubba is gone.
But ..as i can recall the only time that we have been blown out by FSWhoy was when we had the scollies cut. Under JJ we would win comfortably. I dont recall in recent history when things were equal of them winning by a comfortable margin.
We have a d that is ridiculous. This is where our Canes increase their stock nationally. Its time to win by two or three touches. All of the rest of our games .. we should win by at least a touch.

411

These game are always close, always competitive. It's just the way they have been, if one team is ranked 2 and the other ranked 80 it still ends up being a tight game...

That said we have the talent and experience to blow them out this year. We have to eliminate mental mistakes and not turn the ball over.

At the very least we should not get beat in this game by more than a few points if we lose.

I think it wil be another close game that we pull away from in the 4th Qtr to win (similar to Clemson)

j.w. - ya man, I try to share some of the stuff that happens b/c of my work ... sometimes it's not much, but others it's kind of surreal

Like I said, he was very cool last night, very nice guy

It was funny and expected by me though when I was showing him the station very quickly and introducing him to some people - and none of them knew him, even some of the older guys that watch sports. So, when I introduced him, I said that this is Babe Laufenberg, he's the sports anchor from the Dallas CBS station and was a QB for the Cowboys and a couple of other teams

Then afterward, I had to tell those guys when he played and what years

I did though ask him if that was him on Survivor a couple of seasons ago b/c I don't watch Survivor, except the 3 episodes Jimmy Johnson was on, but it was Gary Hogeboom - another former Cowboys QB

Was funny though b/c he seemed really intent on finding out where the Sun Dome was so he could go see Bob Dylan - it's like a mission to him to go see Dylan

Six

DTX - I'd like to have him here then in the Tampa market, b/c unfortunately we have some people here in dire need of being replaced b/c of their basic drive-thru knowledge of the sports they cover

Ya, it's easy for the sports anchors to say certain things about a sport or game - the obvious statement that everyone knows or has heard on ESPN and they just regurgitate to our viewers

But, I'd rather have someone that can really break something down .. with Babe, it would obviously be football and the possible insight he could provide - not to mention just how he sounds on the air

We have former Bucs QB Shaun King on the radio here, on a pay-for-your-air station .. and he is basically unlistenable b/c you can't tell if he needs to take the large amount of peanut butter out of his mouth while he's talking, or he needs a sledgehammer to the face to clear his sinuses. I tried to listen to his show to see how he would do - I couldn't listen to more than maybe 9 minutes combined, 4 times .. and I haven't listened since

I did tell him that I have a family member in a high position at a university in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area, in a field that he actually thought would be very useful to him - so he asked me for his name and number

I'm going to try and work Babe as well for possibly helping me re-locate to any of the stations out there

Posted by: Canestruck | October 05, 2010 at 10:50 AM
----------------------
Canestruck, you took the words right out of my mouth. FS has played 1 decent team and got smoked. They have played 4 FAMU-like teams, thats why their numbers looks so good. Whereas the Canes played 2 teams that has defenses that, imo, are better than FS's.

Yes this is a rivalry game, but the talent level isnt equal on both sides of the ball.

The Canes o-line has been tested thus far with OS & Clemson's defense and feared well. Plus FS's defense isnt on the same level as OS or even Clemson's defense. So FS wont show the o-line something they havent seen before.

And on offense, only J-12 can help them if he throws picks deep in Cane territory or his picks are ran back for 6. Other than that, their front seven will have its hands full with the o-line and the RB's.

Clemson assumed they could get pressure on J-12 and they only got to him twice thanks to Figs and SH one bad play. This o-line is better than last years and is only getting better with every game they play.

Ponder's scrambling ability is the only thing that worry's me. Other than that, the Canes should win by double digits.

j.w.

70th? Shows you how misleading stats can be, as you all have noted, swtich our schedule with FSU's, and we're a top 20 offense in my opinion. This is going to be a typical UM_FSU game IMO. Their O Line match up well against our strength (DL), and Ponder is going to test our LB's. I don't think their RB's are as good as the FSU fan base thinks, butlike anyone else they can run through an open hole.
Our O should move the ball on them but we just can't have the turnovers and penalties pile up again. I'll say 28-23 UM.

"After Further Review...Miami Beats Clemson!"

I know it's late, but I just wanted to compliment this article title.

The refs were dragging out their reviews, trying for ANY way to twist it toward Clemson.

So glad justice was served and their bogus calls did not impact who the winner was.

macjones

ESPN's Forde toUting your Hurricanes Rising!

He sees a narrow four point Miami win. But I beg to differ. LOL

Also, perhaps ' checking-in J12 ' can debUnk Pat's take on one Jacory Harris.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf

Florida State at Miami (29). The Hurricanes are the anti-Sparty, having played just one home game. They went 2-1 on a challenging three-game road swing at Ohio State, Pittsburgh and Clemson, probably establishing themselves as the team to beat in the ACC. But maybe that team is the Seminoles, who have stabilized after that thrashing at Oklahoma on Sept. 11. If they win this game on the road, Jimbo Fisher has his first signature victory of the post-Bowden era.

Key question: Can Miami quarterback Jacory Harris (eight interceptions the past three games) throw the ball to the right team for an entire game against a decent opponent?

Dash pick: Miami 24, Florida State 20.

Credit goes to OcalaCane. He was so pissed at the refs by the second quarter that he was going ON and ON about it and yellign at the refs from the upper deck as if they could hear him.

After every good play by Miami (just about) he would say "REVIEW THAT!" or "After further review...the play stands or was it ruled a score."

So Solar and I were discussing blog titles after the game and we decided on "After Further Review...Miami Beats Clemson."

2. The ' strength, ' going into the season, of Tejas was their defense.

3. Both the Tiger and F.S.WHO's stats are bogus. Simply because of their ' suspect ' non-conference schedules. Presbyterian and Samford anyone, for instance.
