To be, or not to be? Will it be wide right or wide left? That is the question.
One thing is for certain this week in college football: When Miami and Florida State meet at Sun life stadium this Saturday night on national television (8 PM / ABC) both teams with have their throttles stuck WIDE OPEN in their effort to beat their arch rival and ACC foe.
Both Miami (3-1 / 1-0 ACC) and FSU (4-1 / 2-0 ACC) come into the game unbeaten in ACC competition and fairly evenly matched talent in a game that either team could win.
Whichever team does win will once again have an inside track to competing in the ACC title game on December 4, 2010 in Charlotte, NC.
As usual, Canespace will be on hand to witness history being made as the Canes and Noles battle for State bragging rights and recruiting dominance. Here is a brief update on happenings this week:
Hotel Accomodations: As you know by now the Canespace official hotel is the award winning Hampton Inn in Plantation. Here is more information on the ONLY place to stay for Hurricane games:
If you are traveling to South Florida for a University of Miami football game this year then we highly recommend that you stay at the designated Canespace hotel for these events: The Hampton Inn - Plantation.
This award-winning, luxury hotel is situated in an ideal location just West of University Drive and just a few blocks north of I-595. The Hampton Inn is located near numerous restaurants and several sports bars, is in walking distance to the Broward Mall and only 20 minutes from Sun Life Stadium.
Hurricane fans from near and far literally take over the hotel lobby and patio before and after UM home games. There are always opportunities for car pooling to the game, purchasing tickets and snatching up one of the prized Canespace T-shirts.
Canespace usually throws a "Party On The Patio" after every home game with free food, beverages and prizes for UM trivia contests. With a lush, tropical setting and a large pool and jacuzzi, the Hampton Inn patio is THE place to celebrate each Hurricane victory in 2010!
The special Canespace Rate is $89 and includes a FULL hot breakfast.
For reservations please contact the hotel front desk or speak to:
Susan Stern, Director of Sales, Hampton Inn Plantation: 954-382-4500
Or reserve your room on line with Canespace Corporate Code 0002702804 at:
www.ftlauderdaleplantation.hamptoninn.com
Tailgating Information: The Canespace tailgate can be found in the East 12 area of the Sun Life Stadium parking lot. Enter the stadium off of Florida's Turnpike, turn right and park as close to the stadium as possible. We suggest you get there early (4 PM) as the game is basically sold out and the crowd will be eager to arrive and get their mojo working and their buzz on.
Look for the Canespace banner on the windshield of my white Isuzu Rodeo when U arrive. Some food and beverages will be available for all that show-up but we ask that you bring some additional snackage and your favorite beverages and do what you can to support the party.
Grab Your Hurricane Gear Here: If you are looking for some new 'Canes gear to wear to the game or a special tailgating item then you need to visit the new Canesport merchandise site.
Gary Ferman of Canesport.com who has visited Canespace on occasion emailed me some info about the new site. The Canes Shop web site can be found at: www.canesshop.com.
They have some great stuff, good prices and even a really cool Hurricane memorabilia section too:
If you are lucky you may be eligible for some additonal "insider" discounts if you shop now (see below). We suggest that you shop early and often at this great Canes gear site offered by Canesport.com!

1. Will henderson go to left tackle next year after Franklin leaves?
2. What's the difference on the D? Every area appears improved, but the corners have been incredible of late
Posted by: USAFCane | October 05, 2010 at 03:33 PM
1. Yes. Henderson is quicker than Jermaine Johnson who'll be our right tackle.
2. I am of the opinion that it all starts up front. With a beast offensive line you can have a pedestrian rb or qb and they'll have the time to look good.
With a great defensive line the defensive backs only have to cover for shorter periods of time. Thank Rick Petri:)

I'm sticking by my initial prediction from the other day. I believe it was 38-17!

CARRY OVER FROM THE LAST:
I think the world's flipped upside down. Whats the deal with MACJONES being the voice of reason and sensibility?!? Not to mention, basically understandable these days. WTF?? LOL
Love ya MAC. And, agree with U.
There's plenty of OPINION to go around here, but sometimes precious little FACT. Esp when the same poster bitches bout the bias against the CANES, then bitches bout the computers using "stats" to rank teams. Makes me say, "well then, which is it??"...
AP & Coaches polls are too dependent on pre-season rankings to be worth a dam until Week 6 - 1/2 way thru the season. Gee, thats about the same time as the BCS 1st comes out...when there's been enough ball played for a decent ranking to be developed and for the scheduling differences to even out.
Our CANES will do just fine in all the polls...just keep winning. Also, as distastful as it might be...root for OSU to keep winning, at least until the very end of the season. The better OSU plays, the better we look to voters AND computers alike.

2 questions for those of you smarter than me.
1. Will henderson go to left tackle next year after Franklin leaves?
2. What's the difference on the D? Every area appears improved, but the corners have been incredible of late
Posted by: USAFCane | October 05, 2010 at 03:33 PM
I'll never claim to be smarter than anyone USAF (well...there might be a few unlucky souls out there); altho I did join the NAVY back in the day instead of the USAF! Ok, that may have proved that U are smarter.
1. IMO, yes. LT is the "money" position on the OL and The League makes decent LTs rich men. Great LTs become VERY rich men. There's a good reason why. Having a dominant LT for 2-3 years is a wonderful place to be for any offense/OC/QB.
2. IMO there are several answers to this question. a) We're healthy right now. We had a lot of injuries last season resulting in a thin DL. b) Petri. Combined with a healthy DL the addition of Coach Petri has resulted in MUCH improved DL play = pressure on the QB. Opposing QBs have less time to throw = less time the DBs have to cover. c) Experience and Maturation of the studs that came in during 07-08. we're more experienced and physically stronger. we've been "around the block". d) We seem to have "gel'd" as a defense. meaning each guy trusts his teammates to do their job. So, no single player feels like he has to try to do everything. that means better concentration by each player on his specific responsibility on each specific play which = fewer mistakes, being in proper position, etc.

October 5, 2010
Miami enters the second weekend of October owning a 3-1 record and ranked No. 13 in the Associated Press poll and No. 14 in the Coaches’ poll, which factors into the BCS formula.
The Hurricanes have already posted wins at Pittsburgh outside of the ACC and at always-tough Clemson within the conference. Their three toughest remaining games are at home – Florida State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech. Their road ACC tilts left to play are at Duke, Virginia and Georgia Tech, which hasn’t played to expectations yet.
Miami also hosts Maryland and closes the regular season at home against South Florida of the Big East, which currently sits with a 3-1 record. Its loss was by 12 points at No. 2 Ohio State.
It may be a long shot, but is this resume and schedule a recipe for a national championship contender with obvious help from other places?
Only one team (Arkansas) with a loss is ranked above the Hurricanes in the AP poll, and two (Arkansas, Florida) that have losses are ahead in the Coaches’ poll. Interestingly, Arkansas blew a home lead and fell to Alabama, 24-20. The Razorbacks best win thus far is by a touchdown over 1-4 Georgia.
Florida just got creamed, 31-6, at top-ranked Alabama, and its best win is 48-14 over Kentucky. It also has a victory over Miami (Ohio) on its resume in which the Gators were awful and outplayed. The Redhawks, incidentally, recently lost to Missouri, 51-13.
As silly as comparing scores is, it remains all we have when there’s no post-season tournament to determine a true champion. Yet, even this early in the season, it appears the voters aren’t regarding scores and opponents when it comes to ranking the Canes, Razorbacks and Gators. And perhaps that’s insight into why Miami doesn’t have much of a chance to rise high enough in the rankings to factor in the national title race.
The SEC bias, much of which is justified by the league’s continued excellence, versus the ACC bias that extends in the opposite direction, which is also somewhat justified, shines brightly when considering these three teams.
Miami’s 31-0 win at Pittsburgh and 30-21 win at Clemson, a team that missed a field goal in overtime in a loss at SEC power Auburn, should have vaulted the Canes certainly ahead of Arkansas and Florida, based on results alone.
But it hasn’t, which is also an indication that the shine that used to give Miami the benefit of the doubt has also worn off.
The likelihood of Miami going 11-1 and playing for the ACC championship against a ranked team, likely FSU, which must carry around its 47-17 loss at Oklahoma like an albatross, still won’t be enough to put the Canes in position to win a title. The perception of the ACC, and Miami to a lesser degree, has set in, and it isn’t going to change this year, not with the league owning a 3-10 mark versus BCS clubs.
The only way Miami will find itself contending for a national championship is if it blows out its fellow ACC foes every week, and everyone else but one team loses. A one-loss Miami team likely will get in over a one-loss Boise State, TCU and Utah teams. It might have a shot to get past Arizona, Nebraska (the Huskers barely beat a FCS team last week), and possibly Oklahoma, if the Canes beat FSU worst than the Sooners did.
But really, one still has to consider Auburn, LSU, and one or two-loss SEC teams as more likely options than the Hurricanes, fair or not. Now next season, that could be a different story.
Andrew Jones is in his 15th season covering the ACC.

Maybe this Saturday you can treat the fans to some of that thrilling poker you show instead of a college football game.
You suck ESPN
At least I wont have to worry about that with any Miami home games this year

Mr. Jones, if the Canes win and run the table, they will surprise everyone because in making a BCS run, its always more important how you finish the season, not how you start it. But, the Canes have to first address the major task before them.
The Canes need to go out there and whip FSWHo for allowing Okla. to embarrass the ACC on national tv a few weeks ago. I guess the FSU DC Stoops may have helped his brother look good that day, but he also hurt the strength of schedule for the Canes.
Saturday night is a rivalry game. The Canes have an elite defense, and are clearly a much improved and superior team. With the 3 Es - execute, emotion, eliminate mistakes, Canes can get an impressive win.
Go Canes!

If we want a NC, instead of making a hundred excuses why no one will let us, how about we just earn one and see how that goes?

Holy frijoles -- UM is *91st* in total offense. Those are Nixian numbers. And FSU's defense is number 1 in sacks (I guess UM would be close to that if we also had played five games, but still...). I sure hope Seantrel is ready to come into his own; if not, it will be a looong day.

Delaware State
Howard
North Texas

I do not think it is in our interest to play the OSU s early because if it was worth it we would have stayed the same or moved up ... i mean if we are looking at it as worth the positioning in playing the good teams... but if we would have been 3 and 0 with a convincing win at Pitt ... and a good win at Clemson.. then we might be in the top ten by now. How many teams in the top ten are going to beat OSU early in the season? Yet they dont have a loss and they no one knows who is better...
Is OSU that important later?

solar, are you thinking they might use Storm kind of like how they used Berry when he first started getting into games last year (obvious run situations, usually if we're leading and trying to pound teams)? I was wondering the same thing. I doubt he understands pass protection yet just because nobody other than Mike James figures it out that quickly. But that wouldn't matter if we use him like Berry last year.
Posted by: j.w. | October 05, 2010 at 09:18 PM
j.w.
That would be the easiest way for Johnson to get game experience.
Let him run the ball and not be concerned with picking up blocks or trying to catch passes out of the back field yet.
I think he will turn out to be a much better runner between the tackles than Miller is. Miller is a jet when he is in space no doubt about that though.

montreal you're right. i'm wondering where it is going to come from. one side of me recognizes that these (no longer) youngin's have been through a lot and that they are ready to battle when adversity strikes. but the other side of me says that they are still inconsistent and up and down-- and that the downs can come at the most inopportune time. the d is ballin' for sure-- but fs-shoes has some ballers too-- and ponder is a gamer. we no do so hot against baller qb's.
first acc game at home after a long road trip-- to a packed stadium-- you would think they would be geeked, stoked-- maybe too much so. who knows.
keeping my poise too (even as we ask the team to do the same). steady. . .steady. . . steady. . .
