To be, or not to be? Will it be wide right or wide left? That is the question.
One thing is for certain this week in college football: When Miami and Florida State meet at Sun life stadium this Saturday night on national television (8 PM / ABC) both teams with have their throttles stuck WIDE OPEN in their effort to beat their arch rival and ACC foe.
Both Miami (3-1 / 1-0 ACC) and FSU (4-1 / 2-0 ACC) come into the game unbeaten in ACC competition and fairly evenly matched talent in a game that either team could win.
Whichever team does win will once again have an inside track to competing in the ACC title game on December 4, 2010 in Charlotte, NC.
As usual, Canespace will be on hand to witness history being made as the Canes and Noles battle for State bragging rights and recruiting dominance. Here is a brief update on happenings this week:
Hotel Accomodations: As you know by now the Canespace official hotel is the award winning Hampton Inn in Plantation. Here is more information on the ONLY place to stay for Hurricane games:
If you are traveling to South Florida for a University of Miami football game this year then we highly recommend that you stay at the designated Canespace hotel for these events: The Hampton Inn - Plantation.
This award-winning, luxury hotel is situated in an ideal location just West of University Drive and just a few blocks north of I-595. The Hampton Inn is located near numerous restaurants and several sports bars, is in walking distance to the Broward Mall and only 20 minutes from Sun Life Stadium.
Hurricane fans from near and far literally take over the hotel lobby and patio before and after UM home games. There are always opportunities for car pooling to the game, purchasing tickets and snatching up one of the prized Canespace T-shirts.
Canespace usually throws a "Party On The Patio" after every home game with free food, beverages and prizes for UM trivia contests. With a lush, tropical setting and a large pool and jacuzzi, the Hampton Inn patio is THE place to celebrate each Hurricane victory in 2010!
The special Canespace Rate is $89 and includes a FULL hot breakfast.
For reservations please contact the hotel front desk or speak to:
Susan Stern, Director of Sales, Hampton Inn Plantation: 954-382-4500
Or reserve your room on line with Canespace Corporate Code 0002702804 at:
www.ftlauderdaleplantation.hamptoninn.com
Tailgating Information: The Canespace tailgate can be found in the East 12 area of the Sun Life Stadium parking lot. Enter the stadium off of Florida's Turnpike, turn right and park as close to the stadium as possible. We suggest you get there early (4 PM) as the game is basically sold out and the crowd will be eager to arrive and get their mojo working and their buzz on.
Look for the Canespace banner on the windshield of my white Isuzu Rodeo when U arrive. Some food and beverages will be available for all that show-up but we ask that you bring some additional snackage and your favorite beverages and do what you can to support the party.
Grab Your Hurricane Gear Here: If you are looking for some new 'Canes gear to wear to the game or a special tailgating item then you need to visit the new Canesport merchandise site.
Gary Ferman of Canesport.com who has visited Canespace on occasion emailed me some info about the new site. The Canes Shop web site can be found at: www.canesshop.com.
They have some great stuff, good prices and even a really cool Hurricane memorabilia section too:
If you are lucky you may be eligible for some additonal "insider" discounts if you shop now (see below). We suggest that you shop early and often at this great Canes gear site offered by Canesport.com!
And as some of you know I am a bit of a draft freak so it pains me a great deal to realize that the Patriots GET IT. The draft is the best way to get inexpensive talent, except for the top of the 1st round, and they always accumulate picks. They don't hit on all their picks (and when you really look at their roster haven't even done well with their picks) but they have the numbers so they can afford the misses.
Sometimes I thin they should trade up to get more quality picks as opposed to just quantity. A few years back in their SB year against the Giants I don't think they had a single draft pick make the team (maybe Merriweather was in that class.).
Also Miami passeed on Vince Wilfork and allowed the Pats to take him.
F'n Fins!!
Posted by: DZ8 | October 06, 2010 at 01:52 PM
The Pat's remind me of the 49er's when Eddie DeBartolo was running the team. Eddie had no qualms trading Joe Montana when he was still worth trading. It's a business, and some teams get it better than others.

Was it DeBartolo or Bill Walsh though?
Posted by: DZ8 | October 06, 2010 at 02:07 PM
(and when you really look at their roster haven't even done well with their picks) but they have the numbers so they can afford the misses.
I went back and looked and they have done well with their picks. 2007 wasn't a good draft for them and that stuck in my head. 2008 and 2009 show potential but its too early to tell.
Posted by: DZ8 | October 06, 2010 at 02:10 PM
It might have been Bill Walsh's decision, but when you cut a player like Joe Montana, the boss is the one who has to pull the trigger.
Jimmy Johnson was trying to trade Marino to Pittsburgh when he got to Miami, but Wayne shot that down. In hindsight he should have been traded. Marino could have won it all had he gone. Pittsburgh had every piece of the puzzle that year except a QB. Neil O'Donnell could not hold a candle to Marino, plus Marino was the hometown hero.

Agree 100% about the owner making the call on someone that big. I read a lot and have read a few books on Walsh and don't remember a dominant GM type when he was there. I know he had scouting support and support from the owner to get players etc... but think he was the brains behind the team.
In Bill Walshs opinion the potential best qb ever was...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Cook
Many football experts - including then Bengal's assistant coach Bill Walsh - say that had it not been for that injury, Cook might very well have gone on to be the greatest quarterback of all time. The NFL Network Top Ten series named Cook the #1 One Shot Wonder in NFL History.
Medical technology is much better than it used to be. Almost impossible to have a career ending injury anymore.

He said that NPR is trying to attract an younger audience and has succeeded “not because of a content shift but because they made it easier for a younger audience to connect to content on their terms! The secret was in the flexibility of the new connection NOT the content.” They used social media and mobile apps to achieve this connection.

I remember saying during the off season if Jacory could just throw one pick a game, he could still win the ACC and defend his title for most picks in the ACC.
I caught flak for that because his thumb was repaired and that was behind him.
Now I read comments saying IF Jacory can limit the picks to one a game we will be alright.
He's Joe Namath, he doesn't care how many picks he throws as long as he out scores the other team.
He has the defense to play just that way.

DZ8 - I respect that you have an unbiased opinion about a team that you hate at least
I was used to the Bucs making some bad draft picks while Gruden was the coach and his best bud Bruce Allen was the GM
But, everyone tell me as Fins fans, how these guys have done since being drafted b/c I honestly haven't paid too much attention to some of these guys
I think everyone can agree that the #9 pick overall of Ted Ginn Jr. was just all kinds of awful .... esp. with the type of players out there that were taken behind him
Can't argue with Jake Long, Ronnie Brown, Vernon Carey in the 1st Round ... those guys are solid
But tell me about these ...
Pat White - 2nd Round
Sean Smith - 2nd Round
Philip Merling - 2nd Round
Chad Henne - 2nd Round
John Beck - 2nd Round
Samson Satele - 2nd Round
Matt Roth - 2nd Round
Patrick Turner - 3rd Round
Kendall Langford - 3rd Round
Lorenzo Booker - 3rd Round
Derek Hagen - 3rd Round
Channing Crowder - 3rd Round
Paul Soliai - 4th Round
Joseph Toledo - 4th Round
Shawn Murphy - 4th Round
Brian Hartline - 4th Round
Travis Daniels - 4th Round

Preciction 101 by John Tamanaha NBC Sports
No. 23 Florida St. at No. 13 Miami
8 p.m. ET, ABC
Although many north of Tallahassee won’t agree, it’s good to have these two going head-to-head in a nationally relevant conference showdown.
Miami (3-1, 1-0 in ACC) is more battle-tested, but perhaps tuning up against the likes of BYU, Wake Forest and Virginia in recent weeks means that Florida State (4-1, 2-0 in ACC) is in better position to give its all.
No one in the nation is sacking quarterbacks more often than the Seminoles (25 in five games) and Hurricanes (17 in four).
With both quarterbacks likely to be under siege, who would you rather have behind center? Miami’s Jacory Harris, who has thrown eight interceptions in the last three games or Florida State’s Christian Ponder, who has tossed none in his last three?
Pick: Florida State 26-23
Many college football reporters picked FSU to win because of the above...
Do not allow a sack on JH and we win!!! We will have to rely more on the running game than the first 4 games...FSU has more speed than Clemson and better DBS...
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | October 06, 2010 at 05:37 PM
- 22 runners left on base
- 5 left in scoring position
- Bases juiced first inning with one out and couldn't get in a single run, both Pena and Baldelli struck out
- Price gave up 4 more hits, 3 more earned runs, only 2 less Ks
James Shields better pull a 1995 Steve Avery in Game 4 of the World Series if the Rays want to have any kind of pulse heading into game 3 at Texas
With a 13-15 record, a 5.18 ERA and being the leader in giving up home runs ... the chances are between almost none and absolutely none - esp. when the Rangers have a MLB leading .276 batting average
Oh, and CJ Wilson on the mound for Texas, who leads the team with 15 wins
It ain't over yet, the final out of the final game hasn't come .. but it sure the hell is off to a crappy start

1. Key of Orange and Green. No not the key of E sharp-LOL. Your Hurricanes have to get the running game going, again. Miami has to rush for ' at least 135 yards. ' No if's, but's or may be's.
2. Key of Seminole. F.S.Who has relied heavily on the run this season. So, it's imperative Miami holds the Seminoles to under 175 yards.
In all of F.S.Who's wins, they have rushed for at least 200 yards+.

The Sports Brothers had Ponder on their show, didn't say anything too stunning. They mentioned to him how they were already tired of hearing the Seminole Chant and the game wasn't even here yet. He let it slide.
Micheal Irvin (hallowed be thy name) had Jimbo on at lunchtime, his big topic was how real swagger was built by practice, that Deion and Micheal were both known for their flash, but that they were two of the hardest practicing, and that it was what made the old Canes and Noles teams so great.
Funny how they are hitting the circuit down here. Are they looking to steal some of the State of Miami guys?

The biggest difference between the million picks J12 threw last year, and the half-million he's thrown thus far.......
They're not turning into pick 6's.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think he's thrown one yet.
Three of his TD's to the otha' cula' likely kept us from being 11-2 last year. As long as the ones he throws this year don't get taken back to the house, or returned 80 yards, (OSU) we should be able to navigate through the rest of this season with no more than one loss........Or less.

Pat White - 2nd Round-Bad pick, I didn't like it.
Sean Smith - 2nd Round- Still has potential but lately getting beat in the slot role.
Philip Merling - 2nd Round- After he beat his woman he tore his achiles. Will be back next year. (Ya, charachter matters with The Tuna)
Chad Henne - 2nd Round-Not sure, Still want to see more.
John Beck - 2nd Round-With the Redskins/blame Cam for not preparing him. He likes to check down.
Samson Satele - 2nd Round-Starting center for Oakland.
Matt Roth - 2nd Round-Starting SLB for Cleveland.
Patrick Turner - 3rd Round-With the Jets.
Kendall Langford - 3rd Round-Starting LDE for the Dolphins. Loses his $50k earing on the practice field. FOCUS! (If he would've gotten that pick, before Sanchez gothat TD you'd know his name.)
Lorenzo Booker - 3rd Round-we got a draft pick out of Philly
Derek Hagen - 3rd Round=was with the Giants in pre season
Channing Crowder - 3rd Round-injured, and a gator, but we are waiting for him to come back cause our ILB suck! (except for Dansby)
Paul Soliai - 4th Round-very good ( at least at the start of games, dude weighs 360lbs)
Joseph Toledo - 4th Round-Out of league
Shawn Murphy - 4th Round-Out of league
Brian Hartline - 4th Round-Stud 2nd receiver, AND he knows if you get in a one car accident, call a friend and get home before the cops can bust you for being drunk driving.
Travis Daniels - 4th Round-Traded to Cleveland, no idea where he is now

Six,
Please don't misunderstand my criticism for an undying loyalty. I WISH, the Dolphins had the sam M.O. as the Patriots. If you look back you'll see I commented on the Brandon Marshall signing and took your side a bit over CSM. I said I predict that Brandon Marshall will get in trouble before Dez Bryant does.
The real part comes when they say they don't like injury prone players and then go sign a guard (Justin Smiley) and a C (Jake Grove, VT) who HAD injury problems. They make this rule book, then break the rules.
I like Ireland and I REALLY like Sparano. But Parcells?, he is a quitter who has never won ANYTHING without Bellichek. EVER.

DarC...earlier today I asked Gary Ferman (via email) about the UM-FSU game.
I told him that I can't quite get a feel for the game not sure of the outcome.
I asked Ferman if it was a slam dunk for Miami to beat FSU. He said no way!
He says Miami has to play well to win.
I agree 100%.

Hurri...good point about the pick 6's last year vs 2010.
Both teams have talent, speed and ability.
These games are usually decided by:
1. Turnovers
2. Penalties
3. Special Teams
Whoever makes the most mistakes loses.
