For my fellow Canes fans with the freedom to go to Clemson:

Restaurant recommendations from Steves latest blog:

…AND THEN SOME RESTAURANT RECOMMENDATIONS
— BBQ lovers have to try Spanky’s Backyard BBQ in Six Mile, S.C. It’s a little off the beaten path, but it’s awesome. And believe it or not, the owners are big Hurricanes fans.
— There’s a really good little Italian trattoria not far from Clemson called Villa Novella. Be sure to make reservations, because they could fill up quick Friday and Saturday night.
— More Italian: Bella Vita in Easley. Superb.
— For a good steak, try Pixie’s and Bill’s in Clemson. Excellent stuff.
— For authentic Mexican, try Super Taco. Little hole-in-the-wall place in Clemson that features outstanding stuff.
— And you have to check out the famous Esso Club, a sports bar located in the shadow of Death Valley.

True story, walking down the sidewalk during the summer I found a USB flash drive sitting in the middle of the sidewalk, 4GB, black rectangle, I will NEVER put it in my computer and I haven't tried to plug it into a library or another computer yet but this is why I won't do it to mine.

I think this will be a great college football game for the fans. I do not expect a repeat of the Pitt game. Clemson is a much better team than Pitt. The defense will not dominate Clemson like they dominated Pitt. If you accept that statement, the next question is how the offense will perform, and that is the big elephant in the room.

Big games like this are won, 85% of the time, by the team that establishes the run. We have played three games and have yet to establish the run. FAMU 36 rushes - 155 yards, 4.3 yards per attempt. OSU 28 rushes - 120 yards, 4.3 per attempt. Pitt 35 rushes - 100 yards, 2.9 yards per attempt. That totals 3.78 yards per attempt for the three games. Throw out the FAMU game and we are averaging 3.49 yards per attempt.

If I am the D Coordinator for Clemson, I think I would take away the running game by run blitzes and special help from the secondary. I am going to make Miami one dimensional like we made Pitt one dimensional.

Then it is a shootout between Jacory and Parker. Clemson has only played one game against real competition this year. But they had 0 turnovers in that game. They averaged over 4.0 yards per carry, and Parker completed about 66% of his passes. Again, throw out the FAMU game from the stats. Against OSU Jacory passed for 22-39, 232 yards, 5.9 per attempt with 4 turnovers. Against Pitt 21-32, 248 yards, 2-2, 7.75 yards per attempt. Totals two games against real competition 43-71, 480 yards, 6.76 yards per attempt. That is 60% passing, 240 yards per game average, 3 TDs and 6 INTs. My concern is that great teams do not defeat themselves.

The weakness on this offense the last two years is the right tackle position. The left tackle position is also somewhat suspect against elite teams. Clemson brings two DEs that should test both of our players. The reason Henderson has practiced this week with first team is because the coaching staff knows we can't matchup. If SH plays 50% of plays we have a chance but when he doesn't play, if there is a bust, it could be a sad and long day for the Canes. If they succeed in shutting down the run, they will play pass from the second quarter on.

I love Jacory the same way I loved Marino. He is a unique talent. If he has a good running game, he can be deadly. But we can't rely on Jacory week in and week out to win every game. We must establish the run this week. That is purely a battle of wills, and having the best run blockers in the game. I haven't seen it for the first three games. We better see it in the fourth. Just my humble opinion.

Old Skool

Solar, Soup ... wish I was there with you guys again. I know what a fun time it could be. Alas, I'm still in deal closing hell.

Ungar thank you for the award and as much as it goes against my grain, I will accept it.

SJMPARMAN a very well reasoned opinion you've got there.

usagainstheworld

miami-- no huddle offense. clemson will run it too. this one going to be a barn burner.

WindyCane1

If Miami continues to improve like they did the last game and they win the turnover battle, they will win this one easy going away.

This is really a very elite football team in the making on D and ST, and the offense will come around eventually if they continue to work at it and improve

Aren't you curious whats on it? Can't you turn it in to some relevant legal authority?

DZ8

No idea on knee braces, maybe they're not hurt.

Turnover difference will be as good as the scoreboard with a special teams TD counting as a turnover either plus or minus.

Spence played maybe even better against Ohio State on Sept. 11, when he had 11 tackles, including two for losses, and a pass breakup in the Hurricanes' 36-24 loss. UM's defense ranks No. 1 in the country in tackles for losses, thanks mainly to Spence, who is sixth among FBS players with an average of 2.17 per game.

"I'm not really into stats," said Spence, who is called a jokester by teammates but remains quietly intense around others. "I'm just trying to do anything I can do to help the team win."

^^^^^^^ Repost- Laptop going thru terrible twos!

In last week's 31-3 victory against Pittsburgh, Spence was a one-man wrecking crew. He finished with a game-high nine tackles, 2.5 tackles for losses and 1.5 sacks while spearheading a defense that held the Panthers to their fewest points in a regular-season game since 1999.

There has been no shortage of drama between Miami and Clemson, as the past three games have been decided in overtime and won by the visiting team.

Enjoy Saturday’s game in Death Valley while it lasts, because it will be the last time the cross-divisional programs meet again until 2014 -- and this one is going to mean something.

The winner of this game will be in an extremely favorable position to make a run at the ACC championship game, as both one-loss teams are among the best in the conference this year. Miami has already begun to separate itself from the rest of the Coastal Division, and Clemson proved a formidable opponent for No. 10-ranked Auburn in a 27-24 overtime loss on the road. Miami’s only loss has come at No. 2 Ohio State. There’s no shame in either nonconference loss, but this will be the first ACC game for both teams and mark the beginning of nine straight weeks without a break.

Seems like a good philosophy for Miami to take up too:

Georgia, which heads to Colorado this weekend, has been one of the few SEC teams that travels a great deal, but that's about to change, reports Seth Emerson:

Greg McGarity, in his first month as the athletics director at Georgia, made known his first break with his predecessor by agreeing to cancel a series with Oregon. Previous AD Damon Evans had scheduled the games for 2015-16, as part of his effort to brand Georgia nationally. But McGarity prefers a more local strategy. The result will be less exotic games and a softer non-conference schedule -- but in McGarity's mind, a better chance for the Bulldogs to reach their ultimate goal.

"There is no RPI in football," McGarity said, referring to the all-important stat that ranks men's basketball teams for the NCAA tournament. "At the end of the day if Georgia is 8-0 (in the SEC) and beats Georgia Tech, chances are they're going to play for the national championship."

That fits with the strategy at Florida, where McGarity spent the past 18 years. The Gators have their year-end rivalry game with Florida State, much like Georgia has Georgia Tech. Otherwise, Florida tends to have an easier schedule, allowing it more home games.

Seems like a good philosophy for Miami to take up too:

I, respectfully, disagree Matt. Most everyone here is incredibly ACC-centric (which is understandable as it is a Miami fan site afterall). But, the sad truth is that the ACC is barely a butter-knife width above the big least when it comes to BCS conferences. Winning the SEC, even with 1 loss, WILL get a team in the NC. A 1-loss ACC team??...IMO that depends to a huge degree on WHO that loss was to and how the ACC team played. Until Miami, FSU and at least 2 other ACC programs prove they are top 20 programs (not once every 4 years TEAMS, but programs), with two being top 10; any contender from the ACC will need a tough non-conference schedule to make the BCS NC.

Just my opinion

Ungar

"Enjoy the games this week and join me back here next week as the Shortlist begins to draw ever closer to the magic number of 25 teams and actual rankings based on merit instead of expediency here on the Shortlist to the Site of the Shanghied 'Ship."

Just wanted to honor this great act of alliteration. Good job OGV.

Ungar

As for the question of why the linemen don't wear knee braces, I am guessing nobody here has WORN them.

Basically, you lose mobility, they weigh you down, and they slow down a extending leg. The reason for their existence is to support a weak knee, but they won't stop a tear.

Now, if you add a spike to the front, and do the same to the elbow pads, then you might have something there. Get the players to look like this:

http://terminerd.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/fox-robot-capture.jpg

Ungar

Dallas and Matt, look at it this way.

What if we had scheduled Miami of Ohio instead of Ohio State?

We would be 3-0, with a road win at Pitt, going into Clemson in the Top 10. No discussion of the 4 INTs by Jacory, and maybe 10 points total scored against our defense and our backups getting extra work in.

I LOVE playing a real schedule, but we keep getting punished for it when cowardly teams use their first three games as preseason work and three free wins. No SOS and RPI measure in the BCS, so no reason to take on that extra burden.

I would prefer playing the tough schedule and getting rewarded for it. But there is a reason teams are dropping competitive games.

Soon we will have 25 teams that never face each other, unless forced by their conference. That sucks.

canechic

Well said Ungar, here, here!

Ungar

Thanks canechic!

MattInNY

Unger thats what I am saying. I loved the idea of playing Ohio St. but I like the idea of playing Ohio St. for the national title, not some meaningless regular season football game. All that game did was bring out the critics. We had more to lose than gain and it did not matter if we played them b/c if you are undefeated from a BCS conference you will be playing for the title, period! Unless some ridiculous thing happens like when Auburn was screwed but that is more the exception. Had we played FAMU and then a Pitt and some other ok non conference team, agreed, we would be 3-0 and going to the ACC schedule and no one would think twice about it. Its not necessary to play these games year in, year out b/c the system does not demand it. When Miami was in the Big East those teams sucked but we played FSU and no one really said a word when Miami was 11-0. So now its flipped, the ACC teams are a little better so there no reason to play the OSU types of teams. To much risk for the little reward you get.

CGNC

From Dabo Swinney's Press Conference

I think you'll see a heck of a ballgame. For them, offensively, they're rushing for 32 times a game, throwing 33 times a game. They're multiple with their formations. They like to get in a lot of unbalanced sets, which create challenges for us on defense getting lined up and communication. They've got very talented skill. Their quarterback is a very good player who can make all the throws. He's a really good deep ball thrower. That's something they will do often. They like their offense in chunks. That ball will get sent down the field several times. We'll have to do a good job defending that. At wideout, No. 47 and 85, they're very good. 85 is a big receiver. 3 isn't as big but he can fly. They've played a lot of people at running back. They've got four and we could see all four on Saturday.

"For us, we have to get after this quarterback. That's the bottom line. We have to make sure it's not a comfortable day for him. We have to keep him on the move. We have got to do a great job. When they max-protect, which they'll do, we have to do a great job in our one-on-one coverage. You'll see a lot of stutters and double-move stuff. Another thing is we'll have to tackle well, because they do get yards after the catch.

"We'll play really, really good, then we'll have a dip and give up big plays. We have to make that team go earn it. We have to continue to do a good job with our turnovers.

"Their defense, as a whole, is the best we've played. With what Miami has in the secondary, I'd put their defense ahead of Auburn's. They're No. 1 in the nation in sacks. Overall, it's a very good unit. John Lovett, someone I'm very familiar with, this is his second year. I worked with him at Clemson. They have a lot more to their package this time as opposed to this time last year. No. 35 is leading the league in sacks. Bailey is a really good player. 44 is one of the top four or five tacklers in our league. He's a very smart guy who quarterbacks them on defense. They have a bunch of guys from that secondary who will play on Saturday.

"It's going to be our offensive line versus their defensive line. They're at the top in the nation in sacks and we don't give up sacks. For us, we have to make the plays that are there. There are plays there that we are capable of making. I'm looking forward to it.

360Cane

I'm looking for JscorY this weekend and not JpickY. I'm looking for J12 not J4int. I'm looking for the guy that went 30-0 in High School. I'm looking for the guy that threw 49 TD passes against only 6 INTs. I'm looking for the MVP of the 6A state championship game. I'm looking for the EA Sports National Player of the Y...ear. I'm looking for the Parade All-American. Will I find him? I better!

The LAST time Miami had to get back to the mountain top, it had to climb over non-conference games with Washingto, Penn State, etc. It builds character; it may take longer to have a top-5 ranking, but when you get there, you're hardened.

MattInNY

Take a look at the Texas non conference schedule last year. I think they had LA-Lafayette, UTEP, Wyoming and Rice but they beat OU and Nebraska, won the conference and went 12-0 and played for the title. The point is you did not see anyone crying about their nonconference schedule.

Lets say Miami won at OSU but loses 2 games in conference. With 2 conference loses Miami would probably not play for the ACC title but do you think anyone would say, but they beat OSU. No they would say we did not win our conference and that OSU game would have been forgotten long ago. Its a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately society we live in.

But if we win the ACC do you think anyone is going to care that we lost to OSU!?!? No! All will be forgotten if we win the ACC. So why play that game.

That thing is nasty. This is why you want to get an Apple if you do not understand how to stay far away from these things on your PC. M$ had to release it's source codes back in the day in fear of monopolization. You know, like Bill Gates buying a country and starting his own military. He could have and would have if he wasn't forced to share the wealth. If you have ever watched Swordfish, what they did in that movie is exactly what was done here, but to the industrial world.

It's scary because this worm can go in and shut down nuclear power plants. No power plants, no radars. HUGE, HUGE security risk. And the fact that it's happening to Iran. North Korea anyone?

Also think of it as shutting down the oil pipelines up in Alaska. Things like that. This thing ain't no worm. It's a snake! Anaconda like.

MattInNY

Character, shmaricter...who cares. I want 12-0 and however we get there shouldn't matter, just get to 12-0, win the ACC and win the title. Why make life tougher than it needs to be and bring criticism upon yourself when its not necessary.

Posted by: MattInNY | October 01, 2010 at 12:17 PM

Because the ACC is not strong enough. And in order for a 1 loss ACC team to make the show, they have to win a tough OOC game. The SEC gets sooooo much respect, UF is actually geniuses on their scheduling. But that's not THE U attitude. Anyone, anywhere, anytime!
