Yeah, yeah, yeah...I've listened for weeks about all of your complaining:
"Miami can't win the big game."
"Our coaching isn't good enough."
"Our offense is inconsistent and helter skelter."
"We can't tackle and our defense is soft in the middle of the field."
Yadda, yadda, yadda...man do we love to complain!
The fact of the matter is that the current status of the 2010 Hurricane football team is what it is and you need to accept reality. The Miami Hurricanes are not yet back to where they want to be and their fans wish they were: In contention for BCS National Championships year in and year out.
But really, is four weeks of complaining going to change things? Sure it might make you feel better for a while, but ask yourself, "Does it have a positive impact on the team?" For quite some time now I have wanted to ask you out loud: "Would U like some cheese with that whine?
The first six games have resulted in a 4-2 record and a #25 ranking in both the AP and the Coaches polls. So far this season Miami has notched wins against FAMU, Pittsburgh, Clemson and Duke and suffered losses to Ohio State and FSU.
No offense to the Rattlers, but the FAMU game doesn't really count so let's just skip it.
Everyone in their right mind, except for Captain Optimist, knew that going on the road to play the then #2 ranked Buckeyes in Columbus in front of over 100,000 screaming fans on National television in prime time would be Miami's toughest game and very difficult to win. I even tried to gently prepare you before the game when I told you Miami would lose the game to Ohio State. Just as I predicted, Miami lost but you wouldn't listen.
The Pitt Panthers are horrible. That game also doesn't count, so again, please hit the skip button.
Miami went to Clemson and OcalaCane, SolarCane, HersheyCane and I went with them. Hurricane fans across the Country stated that they were afraid of Death Valley and the supposedly formidable Clemson Tiger team. But it was I who told you repeatedly before the game: "I GOT THIS!". And I did.
Everyone in the world, except for Captain Optimist, knew that FSU had the speed, talent and coaching to test Miami even playing within the friendly confines of Sun Life Stadium. The Seminoles speared the Hurricanes and shot a flaming arrow right through the hearts of Miami fans everywhere as they won going away and laughing all the way home. That one hurt, and hurt bad.
Miami beat Duke in an unconvincing fashion 28-13 last Saturday once again to the dissatisfaction and dismay of Hurricane fans who are still trying desperately to find a way, anyway if at all possible, to express their love for this 2010 Miami team. Sure it wasn't pretty, but a win is a win is a win. The only thing that makes the Duke game even worth mentioning is that Miami won again on the road in the ACC. Other than that the Duke game was more like, "Move along, nothing to see here, move along..."
This week Miami faces their nemesis Butch Davis and his North Carolina Tar Heels. First a short history lesson on the origin of the team's nickname:
Tar Heel (or Tarheel) is a nickname applied to the State and inhabitants of North Carolina. "Tar Heel" is also the nickname of the University of North carolina athletic teams, students, alumni, and fans.
The exact origin of the nickname is unknown, but most experts believe its roots come from the fact that tar, pitch and turpentine created from the vast pine forests were one of North Carolina's most important exports early in the state's history.
Because the exact history of the term is unknown, many legends have developed to explain it. Many believe it to be a nickname given during the U.S. Civil War, because of the state's importance on the Confederate side, and the fact that the troops "stuck to their ranks like they had tar on their heels".
The book Grandfather Tales of North Carolina History (1901) states that: During the late unhappy war between the States it [North Carolina] was sometimes called the "Tar-heel State," because tar was made in the State, and because in battle the soldiers of North Carolina stuck to their bloody work as if they had tar on their heels, and when General Lee said, "God bless the Tar-heel boys," they took the name.
Apart from the FSU game it has been Miami's defense that has played like they had a little tar on their heels. The UM defense si ranked near the top of several defensive categories in the NCAA and the ACC.
- Nationally Miami ranks 21st in total defense while UNC ranks 33rd.
- Miami leads the ACC in total defense.
- Nationally Miami ranks first in tackles for loss (TFL) and is tied for 3rd in interceptions (INT).
- Miami leads the ACC in INT's and TFLs.
- Nationally the Hurricanes rank 4th in the NCAA pass defense while UNC ranks 22nd.
- Miami is first in the ACC in pass defense.
So if things get sticky at Sun Life Stadium this Saturday look for the Hurricane defense to be the ones to apply the tar to the Carolina offense in defense of their home turf.
We encourage all Hurricane fans to come out and stop your complaining for just a few hours and support your team. Have a beverage, enjoy the game and then go home happy.
This week, more than ever, "The U" needs you!
Someone once said: "Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships."
The Miami Hurricanes are still capable of winning their first ACC title in 2010.
If they do it will be their defense that takes them there.

I wachted highlights of the last 3 games of UNC. Yates has improved a lot...He is very good...He will be a very late round draft pick in the NFL. UNC is a better team this year even with all the players missing...Miami has to play their best game of the season otherwise it will be a nightmare...

Many believe it to be a nickname given during the U.S. Civil War, because of the state's importance on the Confederate side, and the fact that the troops "stuck to their ranks like they had tar on their heels"….. Another legend has it that the troops ran so fast trying to get away from the battle that “all you could see was the tar on their heels”. There are at least 2 sides to every story. LOL

Then again, if they have the loot to pay for those seats in the first place, they don't really have to pay attention b/c that must be fun money for them

pb I listened live today over the internet and couldn't believe how nasty Sid was towards Shannon. Shock radio is one thing, but that's the home team station for God's sake!
All these fools smell blood and want to be the "one" who calls Shannon's demise. Whether Shannon is the right guy or not, he does not deserve the crap that he has been getting lately. And Gino hasn't been much better.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the media has been over the top the last week. Shannon does more for this team and community in one month than most of us will do all year.
And the "fans" on here who talk about the glory days, and being "soldiers", and all that "punk ass thug crap that is not coming back" make me sick sometimes. News flash Legion, "The U" stands for University! There's a Business school, a Law School, a Fing Medical school, an incredible marine biology program, etc, etc, etc. And they also have a football team.
Fire Shalala because the football team isn't winning?? There's a "cleanup on isle nine" for the GED carrying nit wits who spew that garbage. The lady has spearheaded the greatest fundraising effort in the history of the school. "The U" was one of the first in, and will likely be the last out after the disaster in Haiti, "The U" was one of the first schools to respond to the Gulf oil disaster, "The U's" center for paralysis is THE standard for spinal cord research, Army doctors are trained at Jackson under the direction of "The U" on their way to Iraq and Afghanistan, oh yeah, there's a world class music program, etc, etc, etc.
Just look to the north at what happens when you recruit stars over character. That train wreck has one foot in the grave, and one on a bannana peel. We've all been there, remember?
If Shannon isn't the right guy then he will be replaced, but until that day it's our job to support the team, it's Shannon's job to manage it. It's just a Fing game, if you feel as strongly as Sid does then I suggest you get a new hobby. There's way to much to do in this great state then to "tee" off on Shannon for sport. Get a Fing kayak or something!
Go 'canes!

Well said, Sarasota. That being said, when I'm at or watching a game, I still get annoyed when they don't play the way I think they should be playing, and that's final! :)
Posted by: JCane | October 18, 2010 at 11:22 PM
I do to JCane, it's frustrating to say the least. But there is no reason for the "fans" and idiots like Sid and Gino to pile on 48 hours after the fact with no solution. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy!
If the answer to our problem(s) is to fire Shannon and promote Whipple's son to starting QB, then our real problems haven't even started yet!
Go 'canes!

Sarasota`cane very good post!
By the way have you heard that Sid Rosenberg
the bone and ball head enrolled at the U and couldn't finish the first semester because of bad grades and coke...He is such a winner...Guys like him are only big mouths...Strange that he is always bashing on Shannon, Sapp and now Uncle Luke.
You see even if some of us don't think that Randy is the right guy at the HC position, we want him to prove us wrong and succeed in 2010. We also appreciate Shannon the man , Shannon the true Cane and former good DC. The UNC game will be huge!
I think that this week we could give Randy and JH a break and really hope they win against UNC.
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | October 18, 2010 at 11:47 PM
Sarasota, u need to get on the U's business, law, medical, marine & music school blog, cause this is Canes football fan blog. No one will argue your point thats shalala & Shannon does and has done good things for the U and the community, but YOU cannot & should not argue the fact thats both Shannon & Shalala has turned their back on the one thing thats responsible for most the U's success, and thats is Miami Fukkn Football! Look at the millions of dollars thats been generated throughout the years from football, which went to the academics dept b4 the U start gaining federal funding. Football made the school what it is today yet the powers thats b refuse to construct a lousy indoor practice shed so the kids can practice inside when it rains despite the 10's of millions of dollars UM recieve from federal funding each year. And I'm pretty sure no true Canes fan will disagree with me when I say Shannon has completely sold out to the administration. It kills me to see this chump destroy what he help create years ago .

Sarasota'cane....I have been saying this forever but no one wants to believe. Under Shalala the school has grown leaps and bounds(which does help with recruiting). I hope everyone who complains has taken a tour of the school in the last 5 years and if you have not been to the school in a while, take a visit. I have plenty of friends who are employees and she did quite a few things so she did not have to lay off mass of employees. But you know it always easier to b!tch and blame....

The more I look over the entire fall from power situation, it seems to me that going from high school and getting on the U football team somehow ends a kid's commitment to excellence.
He got on a team that has won 5 national championships, sends the most players to the NFL, so somehow he has already made his claim to being one of the best ever.
I see no commitment to carrying the torch for the players that came before him.
No dedication to the school. This is just a stop over and a way to "sell his brand" until he gets into the league.
I see no commitment from the coaching staff to challenge themselves to be better coaches.
They seem to have forgotten not one of them was the first choice for his current position.
Even sadder I see more and more former players from the glory era finding it less important to spend time talking and coaching kids that don't appreciate it, or supporting coaches that don't deserve it.
There is a broader divide between the old family and the newer players and coaches.
There is a very obvious growing division between the way Canes fans perceive the relativity of the Miami Hurricanes to the big picture of college football.
Winning the ACC Coastal to me is the best medicine for the fans.
It will buy another season for players and coaches to make a real commitment to the University of Miami.
Even winning the Coastal this year, we would have to win the ACC and be ranked in the top ten for at least three years straight for a lot of us to ever utter those magic words "we are back"

The 1 thing I would like to see happen with the WR's droppin' balls is to sit them for a play or series and if the back-up shines in the process it will envoke fear into starting WR's that they REALLY could lose their jobs.

jUST REMEMBER, THINGS LIKE THIS STAY IN THE VAULT FOREVER:
OSU is not the toughest team we'll play and I think we'll shut Pryor down and expose his limitations, which are many. He's a very gifted athlete but he's not a gifted QB...yet. After we abuse that OL and crush him a few times, he'll think it's USC 2008 all over again. haha
OSU actually has some real talent but Tressel's conservatism severely limits them. If Shannon had the same players they'd be much, much better.
I'll be surprised if we lose.
