Good points 360.

I know U all for the most part love to hate on the former TxTech HC known for his love of scoring and piracy...but, U know that was his version of the story as it relates to Craig James' kid. Post-concussion, one is supposed to avoid direct sunlight. The kid wasn't able to (or willing to) practice due to a concussion and so was told to stay in a dark room.

Not my intent to bring up Leach for debate or discussion - just to say that 360 has a good point that I overlooked/didn't give any thought to.

REPOST FROM THE LAST:

I am not buying the J12 concussion.

For one, if it were a serious concussion as we see all the time in the NFL, his arms would have been frozen in the air as he laid on his back, but he was moving the entire time.

For two, he would NOT be on the sidelines during a noon game against Maryland with the sun blazing. It was so bright out there, I was even getting a headache. It was interesting to see J12 lined up next to Whipple, helping call plays out to Morris WITHOUT even sunglasses on.

For three, same with the GT game. He was out there in the bright sun not at least wearing sunglasses.

So all in all, I'm selling the concussion excuse. I am buying Morris as the starter though!

Dallas,

I'm with you on the Leach thingy. I thought that mess was so stupid. Like Leach has kids chained up at his house in dark rooms (just maybe). He was looking out for the well being of the kid. Isn't a closet the darkest room anywhere? Probably the only room without windows.

360Cane

When we win Saturday, it will be two years in a row we beat the ACC Champ, but not win the ACC. WTH?!?!?!

Shannon does get credit for that at least, right?

ALL local columnists should post "offical" links to their columns on this site 86. I don't even bother checking the Herald or SS site any longer - not b/c I don't want to read those articles, but b/c I know someone will post a link or the article here and having a one-stop shop to satisfy my CANE obsession is most excellent. I don't have the time to browse all those sites unless I need other "real" news/info from them.

360,

From what I've read out here (and I'll disclose that I dont troll TxTech blogs and never will so I don't have any truly special insight into that program or incident), it seems like the James kid wasn't much of a hard worker and not an impressive player. He probably had things pretty easy his whole life being the son of a college & pro player that is a nationally known name. I wouldn't say that Leach had the kid's best interest 100% in mind. It may be more that Leach got tired of dealing with BS from an entitled youngster. Leach had made a lot of enemies among the boosters and txTech Admin. From what I've seen, there was about a 50-50 split on him for some time at Tech. I think the anti-Leach group used this incident, with cooperation from Craig James, to force Leach out. Leach perhaps overplayed his hand, more confident in his popularity and support from the students and admin than he should have been.

Either way, I don't believe the kid was locked in or chained up or whatever they said. And, a dark room was the best place for him and I doubt he suffered at all. And, I dont care about TxTech so...whatever. I do like Leach tho.

However, I hadn't given J12's concussion situation and the fact that he's been on the sidelines, in the heat & sunlight, any consideration until your post.

Food for thought

DallasTXCane broke down earlier about the establishment, the conference $, etc.

Try and look at this objectively. Did it hurt Miami in joining a conference such as the Big East or ACC and not stay an independent, esp. since joining the ACC?

Did it diminish the type of hunger needed to compete with the other state schools that have boatloads of cash they spend on their programs, huge alumni/booster base, etc.? Simply b/c no matter what, the teams in the conference are sharing money now after bowl season is said and done?

If you have to fight, scratch, claw, bite your way to a National Championship b/c you're not getting a cut of a bigger pot overall by being in a conference - doesn't that make you hungrier, make you recruit differently b/c you know you absolutely need to win in order to make money for yourself to do other things that help the program?

Think about when the Canes joined the Big East or ACC - then think about the years the Canes won the National Championships

Canes joined the Big East in 1991
Canes joined the ACC in in 2004

I can tell you the opinion of a Cane player from the past, and it's not favorable toward being in a conference

There are always advantages and disadvantages to belonging to a conference. Given today's economics a small private school like Miami cannot afford to be an independent.

Hurri - I am 30 minutes from the mufflers bowl - LOL I wouldn't mind that either

xxcanes305xx

Miami coach Randy Shannon said this morning that quarterback Jacory Harris will practice "a little bit" this week, but he still hasn't said definitively if Harris or Stephen Morris will be the starter against Virginia Tech. Harris suffered a concussion at Virginia on Oct. 30.

"Last week, all he did, we go out there and he threw a couple of balls, just on air, just throwing the ball to get back in the rhythm of throwing it, but he didn't really practice," Shannon said. "Maybe five minutes and that's it.

xxcanes305xx

Now the next step is the running part, and now you've got to put on the helmet and the heavy equipment. There are a lot of things that we've got to make sure he's able to do."

Alberto

Another toilet bowl for Miami. Hope we play a sh!ty team. Maybe we can win a bowl game for a change. OH! We got our azzz kicked by FSU #25 and Virginia (NOT RANKED). Well, it would be a though win whoever we play. Reality is... we are not going to win our sh!ty conference anyways. Maybe when RS gets fired we will win an ACC title. Then we can talk about a NC.
By the way, Morris is UM's future. Great QB. Hope he gets lots of playing time.

G'day folks. Back at work after a fun weekend. Great to see a win on Saturday but as I suspect most of you thought, it was too little, too late for me. And 360, agree that a concussion is probably the least of Jacory's problem at this point. When he came off the field I thought broken ribs immediately. Since you can't believe anything Shannon says about injuries, I'm sticking with that as the probable injury for now.

Ungar

So, we are the top team in the state again, and the ACC AGAIN messes with the transitive property.

Miami >> UNC > FSU >> Miami

How does that make SENSE?

Ungar

j.w., ribs makes more sense. The guy PLOWED those ribs, he landed solid on his back, and his chest protection looked pretty slender.

They replayed it in the game Saturday, and I still didn't see concussion from that.

Yeah, plenty of bishing and complaining on here for both of them.

Actually I was hoping my man Haith could take a little pressure off of Shannon for a while? Canes could make some serious noise in the ACC this year AND next.

At least he gives "REAL" interviews. He was even on WQAM with Shannon hater Sid Rosenburg a few weeks back. I'll see if I can find it for you to listen to.

Zakkee

You don't have to be knocked unconscious to sustain a concussion. If he had cracked ribs, he wouldn't be traveling with the team or moving much at all. Jacory had a concussion two weeks ago and IMO is and was ready to play against Georgia Tech this week. I agree with 360, he wouldn't be out there if he was still experiencing side effects of a concussion. Shannon has told the doctor's not to clear Jacory and to not rush his return...ON PURPOSE. Shannon is attempting to avoid a QB controversy. If I were him, I'd be up front with Jacory and tell him that: "Morris is playing too well to take him out right now, we're going to ride this good play, chemistry and momentum until Morris is injured or starts to play badly and you'll come in to get things going from there. Practice and in game performance, will determine our starter for the remainder of the season and the QB job will be up for grabs in the coming off-season." Until, Morris's play shows otherwise, he should be the starter, this is the only fair way to bring Jacory back into the game at this point. The team and fans would understand the switch back to Jacory *ONLY* if Morris started to cost the team with bad QB play. This is the best way to handle this situation for: Morris, Jacory, the fans, and the team. Everybody wins this way, it supports ACCOUNTABILITY and DETERS the development of any senses of entitlement from all angles.

Shannon has advised the doctors not to clear Jacory and this is a backhanded way to handle things and it cultivates and justifies resentment if exposed.

DallasTX Cane

SOUP - I agree & don't think any school (even big) can really afford to be an independent now. Those days have passed. ND gets away with it only becuase of the TV contract they have. Take that away and they'll be part of the big 10 the very next day.

In fact, as we've seen with TCU & BSU, U must be a BCS conference member - thats the way the system was designed and it works exactly as it was designed. It was meant to be a moat around the BCS schools castle and has worked perfectly (from the BCS conf perspective). However, the barbarians left out have been storming the castle for several years now and some of the defenders have let internal rot weaken them (think big east & acc). It seems the moat is being crossed and TCU/BSU are climbing the castle walls. Will they breach the castle? Remains to be seen.

Posted by: 4-Real | November 15, 2010 at 01:34 AM

Word on the street from "insiders" is this:

1. Some kids will sign with UM.
2. Some kids will sign with FSU.
3. Some kids will sign with UF.

None of them will matter this year or next year and some will never make a difference.

Some of the players will never start a game and a few will never enroll at the school that signs them or play a single snap.

Hope that clears things up for U?

^^ I just fell off the couch...lol!

I don't like all of this piling onto my bro solar, but I agree that Boise's schedule is not worthy if they're 1 loss teams from major conferences who play tough teams week end and week out...weak end and weak out like Boise does.

solar, UM's 1994 schedule is still much better and more difficult than Boise's and they'd have a problem with it even today (if the had to play it). It is what it is, I actually like Boise, but the only way I can honestly support you in this argument is to say this: Boise would've whoop are ass (the last 4 years) if we played them heads up!

Colin McCarthy is the best LB in the country when he doesn't have to think, read, react, or retreat into coverage. He's a missile...he has no brakes...a str8 shooter. Good game regardless #44!

SCOUTING THE TIGERS

Memphis, ranked No. 19 in the country in both preseason polls, returns to competition following Friday's 104-40 season-opening win over Centenary. Five Tigers finished in double-figures in the blowout victory, including a game-high 17 points from Antonio Barton and 16 points from Chris Crawford, who converted all six of his field goals - including going 4-of-4 from long range. As a team, Memphis shot 55 percent from the field, 51.9 percent from beyond the arc and 72.7 percent from the line, while forcing 28 Centenary turnovers.

Memphis, picked to win Conference USA in most preseason publications and websites, returns two starters and six letterwinners from last year's squad that went 24-10 and advanced to the NIT's second round. The Tigers finished second in the Conference USA regular season standings (13-3) and reached the quarterfinals of the C-USA Tournament.

DID U KNOW?

Former Hurricane men's basketball standout Jimmy Graham registered his first NFL touchdown on Sun., Nov. 7, to help the New Orleans Saints knock off the Charlotte Panthers, 34-3, in his home state of North Carolina.

A four-year letter winner in hoops for the `Canes (2005-09) -- still ranking eighth all-time in career blocks (104), Graham played football for UM as a graduate student in 2009, was drafted in the third round and is a rookie tight end for the Saints.

Reminds me of how they handle soccer teams in Europe.

Minor and Major teams are decided by promotion and relegation.

It would be great if the worst MLB team was moved to the minors, and the top Minor League team took their place, for example. Heck, the Marlins are almost a minor league team as it is thanks to Loria.

Or have the worst Division FBS conference (Big East?) dropped and replaced by the top non-BCS FBS conference. Cincinnati and Pitt getting replaced in a major bowl by TCU or BYU, and then have to FIGHT to get back in, would give the TCU's and BSU's and BYU's conferences a REASON to get better. Heck, that might make the ACC also work harder to get some teams to do better.

Posted by: Ungar | November 15, 2010 at 02:27 PM

Unger, that is the nature of college football sometimes. Kids are unpredictable, so you often have to examine an entire season before you can truly assess the quality of the play.

For those of you who like stats, cfbststs.com is a great site. It tells the story of a Canes team that has improved statistically over last year, but the overall record is the same.

The Canes are now #1 in total offense in the ACC after having two straight weeks of 500+ yds against two quality ACC opponents. The Canes also have been #1-2 in most defensive categories all year.

The thing that has hurt the Canes is turnovers and penalties. Without those critical mistakes, the Canes might be undefeated or with only one loss.

I cannot fully explain it, but the Canes are playing a special brand of football the last 2.25 games that I have not seen since the early 2000s. The running game, the offensive line and the QB play has been stellar (with the exception of a few turnovers). The D has been great the last few games and they Cane be better.

To say that the offense has been better with Morris at QB is stating something that is far too obvious. The stats speak for themselves and so do the wins.
I am sure that RS, Whipple and the team are studying the film and notice how much better the offense has been with Morris. Plus, I think Whipple might have a few surprises for Bud Foster on Saturday.

GO CANES!!!

Ungar

I want Boise and TCU to be BCS Busters. I like the underdog, just like in 1983.

Stealing a payout from a "privledged" conference also makes it worth it. Mess with blogs, these teams don't care. Mess with their MONEY, you get their attention.

Ungar

Thanks for the response, WindyCane1.

Yeah, the coincidence of Morris being at the wheel while we have played our best offense of the year leads me to wanting to ride that "coincidence" as long as it lasts.

But seeing this team stink against FSU and UVA, then dominate against UNC, GT, and Clemson shows how unpredictable these kids can be.

DallasTX Cane

Posted by: Ungar | November 15, 2010 at 03:41 PM

Love the concept, but think how this blog is gonna blow up when the CANES are a top 5 team but the entire conference gets kicked out of the BCS. LOL Talk about blog hits. Try applying the idea to individual BCS teams instead of conferences. Unfortunately, college doesn't lend itself to this concept because of the annual turnover and lack of player stability. Where was Auburn last year? Where might they be next year if they don't have Cam (for whatever reason)?

Pros are pros and punishing a team/organization for failure makes sense. I'd love to see how the last few games of the season play out if there was disincentive to play poorly instead of incentive - think draft position.

j.w.

Zakkee, if that were true, the team doctor would be violating several medical ethics rules. No reputable doctor is going to lie to a patient because a football coach orders him to do so, especially when the coach is under as much fire as Shannon. There has to be another reason.

86Cane

Plus, I think Whipple might have a few surprises for Bud Foster on Saturday.

Posted by: WindyCane1 | November 15, 2010 at 03:44 PM

Let's hope so. But the timing is critical. Can't get too cute too soon or on the wrong position on the field.

Zakkee

I feel you j.w.....well put it like this: When RS approaches the doctor's for updates about Jacory, I bet he asks leading questions (nods and winks..lol) and probably suggests that if there is ANY inkling of doubt or concern as to his recover so far...he votes to withhold him until the prognosis has no if, ands or buts.
