Can't get too cute too soon or on the wrong position on the field.

Thats what she...

Zakkee

I think Shannon should be up front and dress Jacory for this week's game...we may need him...remember what happened to Jacory last year. We need both QB's!

DallasTX Cane

I can see the impulse to do so Zakkee, the last thing RS needs is a QB controversy or anything to distract the team from VT.

However, its also likely that with the national media attention being given to concussions these days and the medical field's increased knowledge and awareness of the long-term affects of concussions; RS, the doctors involved and J12's family are all being extra cautious. Its much easier to get a 2nd concussion after the 1st and even easier to get a 3rd after the 2nd, etc. In the long run, its worth missing some football to ensure J12's health and well-being. In the short-run, its worth keeping the team rolling and putting off the J12 vs Morris position battle/controversy for J12 to miss some football.

pbcfrcane13

Or maybe Jacory is still having side affects? Any of you guys DR or have any medical backgrounD? You know after a concusion there are lots of side affects. Not just no being able to look into bright light. You can still be in a bright room but get headaches after working out or running. Your body is a different animal when it's under stress. It's amazing because a coach has not one games everybody thinks the worst of him but if he was 8-1 right now nobody would be asking questions about this. It;s kind of sad actually

Guess I've missed it; have people been accusing Randy of wrong-doing? Of what?

I've read some comments about the general lack of injury information disclosed by the program, but everyone knows that has been the case since Randy took over and isn't specifically related to Jacory's injury.

U are right though...the final result, the Ws and the Ls are what is important. If one has a lot more Ws than Ls, people have confidence in that coach and that program and people also give allowances because the overall is positive. Thats true in every facet of life. If U have a good track record, U can afford to have a bad day or a bad season. If U don't, U can't. And even for those with skins on the wall, have too many bad days and those skins will get taken down.

pbcfrcane13

People have said RS is saying Harris is still hurt because he doesn't want to have to make the problem of starting or sitting Harris over Morris

It's gonna be nice to catch some hoops after MNF.

Morris's only loss came when he took over the realm after Jacory Harris sustained a concussed ego. He has been undefeated ever since.

Posted by: pbcfrcane13 | November 15, 2010 at 04:50 PM

I guess I don't see that as "wrong doing" but more as a skillful way to avoid a situation that might dstract the team and would certainly provide much fodder for the media. Plus, if J12 is really as fragile as some feel he is, this is an ego-friendly way to force him to rest his body and mind. Randy can then open up the position for competition in the spring and fall.

pbcfrcane13

If I'm RS I would dress Harris if he is cleared. Then their is two ways to look at it from here.

Start Morris against Bud Foster and the VT D and if he struggles early you can bring in Harris. Also if you dont dress Harris and Morris goes down then your left with Whipple and or if MOrris is strugggling bad do you really want to leave him in throwing pick after pick?

Start Harris who has experiance in big games and against Bud Foster. If he struggles you bring in Morris. Who cares about ego at this point.

DallasTX Cane

If J12 is really 100% or even 85% then he should be dressed. If he can be cleared but isn't min 85% then I understand NOT clearing him. Thats a tough call to make. U know Morris is 100%...U don't know about J12 even if cleared as he hasn't played in 2+ weeks.

If it were me, the timing is everything. If J12 is cleared and can get two good days of practice in AND he looks sharp during practice, I play him. If J12 doesn't get the practice time in to evaluate him or he doesn't look good (like he's still recovering), then I play Morris.

I'd rather have 2 QBs ready to go than not. However, I'd need to have a lot of faith in J12 to play and he hasn't done well enough this season to go with him automatically. I'd need that practice time to be convinced he's ready.

Ungar

They better be working on getting Whipple to not overthrow his passes, too, just in case.

Foster's strategy versus GT was to take out the QB. And it worked. He does that here, we are dead if JH is not even dressed for the game.

DallasTX Cane

maybe randy ought to call sparano for advice on how to win after losing 2 quarterbacks?...

I am someone that knows alot about concussions. I suffered many early in life

They have now led to me having seizures, epilepsy, depression and growing memory loss

I take 21 pills daily and I have to give myself 3 shots a month to help control my health issues

Back when I was 1st exp. problems with concussions I never really had any major issues dealing with the sunlight, really no side effects that would alarm anyone. Heck for that matter my Doctor never knew had bad it was until I went into my 1st seizure

You can play an entire game(any sport) with a concussion without showing any outward signs of it. Trust me on this one guys/girls, I know this all to well

Better to be safe now then to be 43 years old and sometimes wonder what the next day has in store for you and no ive never done drugs or tipped the bottle.

If Randy would have put Morris in the UVA game rite after Harris went down .. he may have pulled the o together earlier. He only needed one more possession to go ahead ... the o was getting heated up. We could have determined our own destiny.

The important thing is for Whip to get Morris ready for VT. If the young qb is well prepared he should do like all the other Cane qbs and put some quality points on the board. Especially with that very young VT d line.

Sorry about your issues Sebastian, these concussions are much more serious than we even know. I am so glad Nick decided to give up football. And for my grandchildren it will be all baseball. No soccer either because lots of soccer girls/boys are having these same issues with head problems, seems to be worse when kids are young.

A person with a grade 3 concussion (involving any loss of consciousness, no matter how brief) should be examined by a medical professional either on the scene or in an emergency room. More severe symptoms may warrant a CT or MRI scan, along with a thorough neurological and physical exam. The person should be hospitalized if any abnormalities are found or if confusion persists.

Prolonged unconsciousness and worsening symptoms require urgent neurosurgical evaluation or transfer to a trauma center. Following discharge from professional care, the patient is closely monitored for neurological symptoms which may arise or worsen. If headaches or other symptoms worsen or last longer than one week, a CT or MRI scan should be performed.

Contact sports are avoided for one week following unconsciousness of only seconds, and for two weeks for unconsciousness of a minute or more. A person receiving a second grade 3 concussion should avoid contact sports for at least a month after all symptoms have cleared, and then only with the approval of a physician.

If signs of brain swelling or bleeding are seen on a CT or MRI scan, the athlete should not return to the sport for the rest of the season, or even indefinitely.

For someone who has sustained a concussion of any severity, it is critically important that he or she avoid the possibility of another blow to the head until well after all symptoms have cleared to prevent second-impact syndrome. The guidelines above are designed to minimize the risk of this syndrome.

Solar: You called it. Spot on!

During his Sunday teleconference following UM's 35-10 victory at Georgia Tech, Shannon shed light on usual starter Jacory Harris' head injury, calling it ``something that's severe and serious'' and adding that he -- and the UM medical staff -- would not rush the recovery process.

86Cane

SOUP, can we have a Blind Squirrel Award for the person that makes the most outlandish but correct prediction?

Posted by: Ungar | November 15, 2010 at 05:41 PM

Sure, why not?

Shannon, who has grown tired of the constant criticism from SolarCane, Canez1, Captain Optimist and others immediately emails RaizeCane for some "spiritual advice" to get his head right.

RaizeCane being the "good friend" that U need in times of crisis contacts the only two people he can trust with the innermost secrets of the UM family: Captain Morgan and The Playa (formerly known as Rashad).

The three of them go out on a three day bender to Las Vegas and make the movie "Hangover" look like kindergarten. Seriously, like child's play.

Shannon comes back to Coral Gables sporting a three day growth of facial hair and some serious red eye as he walks into Whipple's office and proceeds to go all ghetto on him and cuts him up like a fruit salad.

He calls in "The Cleaners" (Don Bailey Jr. and Michael Irvin) who take what's left of Whipple out for a ride deep into the Everglades to dispose of the heavy, white carcass. Instead of one day beating the Gators, the Miracle Whip gets fed to them.

Shannon hires Mike Leach as Offensive Coordinator, tells Kirby to stuff it and turns into a Pirate with an eye patch and a serious addiction to Captain Morgan. Heeding Leach's advice he locks J12 in a closet and throws away the key.

RaizeCane and The Playa get an exclusive sky box at Sun Life Stadium with all the Captain U can drink and invite all of the Canespacers in to watch the Canes win their 6th and 7th National Championships back-to-back in 2011 and 2012.

Canezilla, pisssed off that he was NOT invited, walks into the sky box and screams: "East Sider For Life!" before doing a shot of Vodka and then jumping over the balcony to the cheers of Canespacers present.

Everyone holds a moment of silence for Zilla, except of course for Canechic and AngryCane who just so happened to be in the bathroom having "marital relations" at the time.

AlpharettaCane

Just when I'm about to give Shannon a tiny SLIVER of benefit, he comes up with this classic:

On the urgency to win Saturday: ``It's an opportunity for us to end this season in the ACC with a win on our home field, which is something we haven't [done] in a long, long time.''

WTF?????????????????????????????????????????

This ranks right up there with his infamous "losing the division won't be a big disappointment, but it will be disappointing"......

And my favorite in terms of lowered expectations, this after the loss to Wisconsin in the bowl game last year:

"All you want to do is keep it close so you have a chance late in the 4th quarter."

VT Blog Game Day Guide: Virginia Tech Hokies (8-2, 6-0) at Miami Hurricanes (7-3, 5-2)

Miami: The Hurricanes are coming off a 35-10 road win against Georgia Tech in which they scored the game's final 21 points ... the Canes' three primary running backs in the game (Damien Berry, Lamar Miller and Mike James) combined for 218 yards on 36 carries (6.1 ypc) and three touchdowns ... in his last two games, freshman QB Stephen Morris is 28-for-48 (58.3 pct) for 516 yards (10.8 ypa), two touchdowns and two interceptions in wins over Maryland and GT ... Jacory Harris was originally expected to return at QB for the Canes after sustaining a concussion against UVa, but it appears Morris will start against the Hokies ... in conference games, Miami has allowed 4.6 ypc (9th in the ACC) and 5.6 ypa (1st) ... on offense they average 5.1 ypc (2nd) and 7.0 ypa (T5th) in ACC games.

What to Expect

•Expect Stephen Morris at QB for the Hurricanes. I think Morris' recent performances will allow Miami to take its time with Jacory Harris' injury. Whether or not Harris plays is still a question, but I doubt we see him and fully expect Morris to start.
•Expect the Canes to keep the pressure of Morris by attacking the Hokies on the ground with their large and capable stable of running backs, including the workman-like Berry and the speedy Miller. Eventually Tech is going to have to figure out how to stop the run. This week would be a nice time.
•Expect the Hokies to try and establish their own run game against Miami. The Canes have a very stout front-seven,but they aren't impossible to run against. Florida State and Clemson both did it effectively, but turnovers killed the Tigers. As good as these two secondaries are, it could be a quick game with both teams keeping it on the ground.
•Expect Leonard Hankerson to burn us deep at least once. Hankerson is one of the better receivers in the league, but is inconsistent and prone to drops. But at least once a game he's going to get behind the secondary. The key for the Hokies is not to let he or the other Miami receivers do it consistently.

Hokies Win If: They force turnovers and have a solid game on the ground.

Hurricanes Win If: They get big plays out of their stars and don't make mistakes in the kicking game.

FROM MILIAN AT THE PALM BEACH POST:

Can last season’s game serve as motivation for Miami or is that kind of thing overrated?

“I think it’s overrated. It’s a different year, different players. Hopefully it’s not going to be raining Saturday. That was a miserable day from a weather standpoint, and then things just kind of went our way. We got some big plays that went our way. Games happen like that”

What’s your impression of Miami’s offensive line?

“Oh, wow. That (Orlando) Franklin guy over there, I think he’s big-time. He’s 6-7. Then you go on the other side and they’re playing that freshman (Seantrel) Henderson and he’s 6-8. Our guys won’t have any trouble getting leverage. We’ll be underneath them, that’s for sure just from the height standpoint. It’s a good offensive line. I think a real plus for them is their offensive line. They have good backs, but you have to have good blocking to get yards, and I think they’re really good.”

Ironic, cuz this is the most talent Haith has had since coming to Miami. Go Canes!

j.w.

The Canes bball team has talent. They are playing pretty sloppy so far, but only down 1 at half-time to a ranked team at their house. Here's to hoping they tighten up the D, value the ball, and take it to Memphis in the second half!
As for football, is Bud Foster's ability to make Yates look stupid the reason why I can't let myself get too optimistic this week? Or is there more to it?

j.w.

So, for those who missed the game: Johnson is a beast, if he were 4 inches taller I'd say you're looking at an NBA Allstar. He's still tough to defend, rebounds better than anyone we've probably ever had since 1985, and plays unselfishly and smart. Scott is all that we though he would be, great young guard who is going to be great. Malcolm Grant played well at times, not a great point guard and we'll suffer because of that at times. Adrian Thomas coldn't hit the broad side of a barn, Dequan struggled but I actually liked his ball handling despite the turnovers. Rion Brown looked real good for a freshman. Garius Adams filled the stat sheet, but I liked what Donovan Kirk brought more despite his poor shots. The Defense really clamped down when we got down by 9 early in the second half, then free throw shooting killed us for about 10 minutes in the 2nd half.
This is a much better team. I'm not sure that will get us into the tourney, yet- they may be just good enough to get beat by every good team, but they showed a lot of resilience and toughness. Much more fun watching them this game than at any time last year.

The Miami running game has emerged with a vengeance. And the No. 24 Canes (7-3, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who meet No. 14 Virginia Tech (8-2, 6-0) on Saturday with visions of staying alive in the league, hope it doesn't go away anytime soon.

Morris: The kid is clutch. He led a 19-point fourth-quarter rally at Virginia in his first action and the next week against Maryland threw the winning touchdown with 37 seconds left to cap an 82-yard drive. He converted a third-and-11 during that sequence, and three third downs during an 86-yard drive at Georgia Tech that iced the game

Harris: Give him a fair shake. Offensive coordinator Mark Whipple's shift to relying heavily on the run has set up Morris to succeed. How would Harris fare with the changed play-calling? In Harris' two starts before Virginia, when UM run 86 times and he threw 66 passes, he completed 57.5 percent for 441 yards, 4 TD and 0 INT.
