If you are like long-time Canespacers RaizeCane (seen below with friends) who is finally out in the open about his on-going affair with Captain Morgan or more like Canezilla who never met a bottle of Vodka that he didn't like (especially while tailgating) then feeling "hoopy" is an all too common if not chronic or even permanent condition.
But, if you are like most sports fans out there and have been focusing on college football then you probably find yourself all caught up in the middle of coaching debates, quarterback controversies, the heated ACC conference race and the national polls and rankings for the 2010 BCS championship.
As a result, you might not have noticed that the college basketball season has tipped off once again. That's right, the roundball is now bouncing its way back into the minds of college sports fans and back onto television screens all across the Country. In fact Miami has already played two exhibition games and one regular season game which they won over Jacksonville (more on that later).
In 2010 your Miami Hurricanes return to the hardwood with high expectations under head coach Frank Haith who is now in his seventh year at UM. "Faith in Haith" appears to be steadily growing over the last few years as Miami's basketball product has consistently been improving.
And considering that the Hurricanes play in the ACC, the toughest college basketball conference in the Nation, that is saying quite a bit about the UM men's basketball program. Last year Miami made a nice run through the ACC tourney before falling to eventual National Champion Duke in the finals.
Last Friday against the Dolphins Miami's starting backcourt of Grant (23) and Scott (20 points) scored 43 of the Hurricanes 89 points on 15-of-26 shooting in the 89-77 season-opening win over Jacksonville.
Grant (seen below) set career highs in points (23), steals (3) and field goals made (7), while tying his high in three-point field goals made (4). With his fourth 20-point performance as a Hurricane, Scott has now scored in double figures in nine of his last 10 games. Miami spread the wealth around and before it was over five Hurricanes had scored in double figures in the season opener against Jacksonville.
Tonight the University of Miami basketball will experience some "Midnight Madness" as they hit the road for the first time during the 2010-11 season to kick off ESPN's third annual College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon. The Hurricanes will face #19 Memphis at the FedEx Forum (@ 11:59 PM) on ESPN.
The starting lineup for Miami features a backcourt of Durand Scott and Malcome Grant, forwards DeQuan Jones and Adrian Thomas and Center Reggie Johnson. Memphis will counter with a squad that features no true Center but three guards in Joe Jackson, Charles Carmouche and Antonio Barton, and forwards Will Coleman and D.J. Stephens.
Haith (seen above @ Stetson last year) has led Miami to 22-straight non-conference regular-season wins, dating back to 2008, when UM knocked off perennial power Kentucky in Lexington. The Hurricanes have won nine-straight regular-season games versus non-conference opponents away from home, including four on their opponents' home court.
The FedEx Forum can be an intimidating place to play, yet the Hurricanes have won several road games under Haith in hostile environments, including the program's first victories at North Carolina (The Dean Dome) and at Kentucky (Rupp Arena). Miami should be able to handle the crowd noise with the dynamic and dependable Scott at the controls of Miami's potent offense.
PREDICTION: Miami by 5 points.
The conference change had nothing to do with our decline; it was coincidence only.
In fact, if U think back to the mid-00's the big least was actually a rising conference. Think of the success W.VA (top 10 in 05,06,07), Louisville, Cincinnati, S.FL, and Rutgers all had during that 04-08 time frame. I know everyone remembers the Louisville game...or the cheerleader at least! Just because the conf has since reverted to historical form - suking - doesn't mean our teams during "The Decline" would have fared better in the big least. On the contrary, we'd probably have done worse.
Miami's descent into the Abyss was self-inflicted.

CGNC - Beamer was probably sitting there in his office with Bud Foster, Billy Hite and Jim Cavanaugh during that conference call
Beamer had his feet propped up on the desk while leaning back. Foster was next to a big dry erase board, drawing stick figures doing nasty poses together ... Hite and Cavanaugh were in there as well, making "U" signs with their hands at Beamer and trying to get him to laugh during the call by prancing around the room doing that, play acting like they were mimes trying to act tough at each other ... Beamer kept rolling his eyes at them and grabbing his crotch while flipping them the bird and they were laughing with their hands over their mouths ... Foster drew a stick figure with a big smile on its face with the words "VTech" over it, while it was behind another stick figure bent over and frowning that had "Miami" over it
When the question about Miami's Special Teams came up, Beamer hit the "Mute" button real quick and looked at Foster, Hite and Cavanaugh and said "listen to this sh*t I'm about to say .. but you guys gotta shut up b/c I can almost hear you f'in giggling over there .. and Bud, those stick figure drawings are awesome" ... then Beamer un-muted the phone and gave off that little spiel about how good the Canes Special Teams were, all the while, rolling his eyes and making those jerkin gestures with his hand
That's how I envision it
VTech is 5-2 against Miami since 2003 and has outscored them 160-91 in that time frame

just went back...excellent post Ungar...guess I'm conditioned to the web's loose interpretation of grammer rules & spelling...or, my laid back loose personality doesnt really worry about the proper use of words...or someone hit me over the head and said loosen up!...or I don't want to loose my internet buddies...

I'd say yout take is a lot closer to Beamer's true thoughts than the coachspeak we read earlier, six!

Six, you missed your calling! You reminded me of this old SNL bit where Nixon explains how those tapes sounded like they did. I doubt anyone remembers this one, it's not even on youtube, but it was GENIUS!

How'd you find those man? Those seriously are great
That's exactly what I was envisioning and trying to portray through words .... that's one class in college I didn't sleep all the way through for the hour, Radio/Television Writing. Communication Law on the other hand, I was freakin Rip Van Winkle
Posted by: Six | November 16, 2010 at 05:20 PM
Just remembered the skit, then googled youtube Nixon SNL. That failed to find it, so I removed youtube and added tapes.
There is a book out there with all the old SNL skits on it and it includes a bunch that were banned.
One of my favorites from that was "Placenta Helper". Censors killed it, while today it would be tame in the Family Guy era...

j.w. & DZ8 - we need a nanny cam hooked into Beamer's office with a mic, you know the kind you see on MSNBC when they bust them

DTX couldn't agree more are demise was self inflicted.
The one thing we had going in the Big East was are ability to bully.
We had a lot of teams that could have competed with us to scared to realize it.
I think when we moved to the ACC with all the fanfare about how FSU was going to pay the price because the thugs were coming, got us a little too full of ourselves and we are just now recovering.

I've visited a few that the bloggers spend so much time trying to impress each other by pointing out spelling errors and improper grammer, that they have driven off some the interesting people they once had posting.

Solar
We may have bullied teams in the Big East but we've gotten treated like red-headed step children in this conference. We've played like a bunch of choir boys since we got in this conference. Are you kidding me losing to the Marylands, UNC, Flippen Virginia's of the world. We've taken on the persona of this conference and that they play football, all be it average,we can beat anyone on a given weekend, no matter how bad we are because the teams we play aren't much better than us. Can't wait for basketball because that's where they get even with everyone else because of their average play in football.
Self inflicted, mostly but a lot of our misery has been because of coaching or our lack of ability to keep a coaching staff in place for more than a couple of years, plus we are a turn-over machine, especially with the int's Jaboney has racked up.

What really sucks is the fact that my 40 inch Samsung LCD 1080P TV is starting to do the dreaded "ghosting" where I see double everything. What sucks even more is that it looks like I am going to have to replace the panel which could be $800 to $1000. I have only had the TV for two years.

Anybody know where in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale or near campus I can find a Cane lid like the ones below ? I'm helping out my former Coach Rich Hofman for a few days who is now the head baseball man at The University School in Davie @ Nova Southeastern. Their colors are Green n Gold, so a solid green, grey or black "U" on black, grey or white would do.
Wanna look the part.
Thanks in advance.

Speaking of 12% forever, what % in that poll to start the year had us with 3 losses?
I bet those people hate that they were right.
Posted by: Ungar | November 16, 2010 at 11:16 AM
92% of fans here voted for the Canes to go 10-2 or better.
I was like RaizeCane before the season: I said MANY times that the only teams that could beat Miami were OSU, FSU and VT.
But I also thought that Miami would win ONE of those three games and finish 10-2 which is how I voted in the poll.
Miami beat themselves against UVA and that ruined an otherwise decent season.

Six,
that's amazing I would pay big bucks to see that in person, but not while I was in the water.
I have been wanting to ask you about these sticky pod camera mounts.
I have seen them on drag cars on the rear quarter panel, and also on road racing cars mounted on the bodywork.
I'm thinking of getting their smallest one and putting an extension on it and slap it on the kayak hull.
Have you ever seen these close up?

Six,
here is a page with some boats and Kayaks using it what do you think?
Would it be practical with a small camcorder?
