Any news on the recruiting front other than J Clowney dropping us again?

mi@mic@ne

Steven Morris has become the leader of this team because he is a complete qb. He is big enough.. .equal in height to Craig Erickson .. he reminds me of Erickson. He is quick on his feet.. has a very good release and throws the ball from the top which gives him extra speed in getting the ball out. If the Whip can continue to bring this offense to nfl caliber run and pass efficiency then the canes will have one of the only offenses in college football that is balanced like a pro offense.

Morris is an all around passer and will only get better as he matures. He will gain another 20 or so pounds in the next two yrs and should be at the top in all the passing stats. Hopefully in the off season he can get together with the receivers and we will be a scoring machine next yr.

Any d coordinator knows it is very hard to prepare for a qb that throws with precision and speed because the receivers only need a step and the ball is going to be on a trajectory that d backs cannot catch up to. We have already seen our receivers taking it to the house because of the added speed on the throws. This makes it impossible for d coordinators to load up to stop on phase of our game. Morris not only takes our passing game to a new level but his presence on the field forces the d backs and lbs off of the line of scrimmage so that we have space to run. D coordinators hold their breath every time canes get the ball on o now.

Is there a situation there, or what is the situation there??..... or is it a secret? lol

When the unconfirmed rumor was swirling around about whether or not Shannon had hired Whipple or Whipple was hired for him I asked Manny and Steve Gorten if they could confirm or deny the rumor.

Neither could and both said that IF Whipple was hired for Shannon by someone at UM that nobody would ever admit it so it was not worth pursuing.

I agree.

Word on the street from "insiders" is this:

1. Some kids will sign with UM.
2. Some kids will sign with FSU.
3. Some kids will sign with UF.

None of them will matter this year or next year and some will never make a difference.

Some of the players will never start a game and a few will never enroll at the school that signs them or play a single snap.

Hope that clears things up for U?

For the life of me, I still can't figure out why this team can not perform like they did on Saturday....EVERY Saturday. We have wasted more talent than the Dallas Cowboys and that is just plain sadd! Anyways for those who missed the UM demolition of the Grumblin Wreckage, you can check out the game here:

They need to give Storm Johnson some carries... he looks like an erratic back. I noticed when he got around the end ... which was not designed for a sweep he turned it up and was looking to cut across the grain ...i think he is a jitter bug kind of runner.

We were missing total balance on offense.. the d coordinators were scheming us to throw with all the interceptions.

Lets not forget abour Devin Hester...he scored yesterday as well.

If Morris beats VT ( actually the running game and Morris)

Where does Teddy Bridgewater play next year?

Having a really good back up qb that can come in and fire the team up has been the difference between a broken remote control and just having to get the batteries from under TV now and then.

Ungar

They said it

"We've got to learn how to handle success. We win two games and start playing around in the hotel room and stuff like that. You're not really as focused. You've just got to learn how to handle success and that's definitely what a lot of older guys are going to be preaching to these younger kids this week." – senior LT Orlando Franklin after the 35-10 win at Georgia Tech.

Hmmm, that sounds like there is a PATTERN there.

solarcane

Before you say who the heck cares where Bridgewater goes, remember 11 weeks ago no one on here gave a crap where Steven Morris went to college.

FROM WWW.HURRICANESPORTS.COM:

In total, the ACC has agreements to send eight teams to bowl games if eight are eligible. We'll know more after this weekend's games, but it we won't know enough until the ACC Championship game is played on Dec. 4 and the BCS makes its selections on Dec. 5.

Maryland (7-3, 4-2 ACC) and NC State (7-3, 4-2 ACC) each control its own destiny for the ACC Atlantic Division crown and a spot in the conference championship game. They will meet on the final regular season weekend at Maryland. Florida State (7-3, 4-2) is still alive as well, but needs to beat Maryland this weekend and hope for an NC State loss to either North Carolina or Maryland.

In the Coastal, the picture is a little clearer. Virginia Tech, the only undefeated team in ACC play, needs to win one of its next two games to win the division. Miami will go into the bowl season no worse than the No. 2 Coastal team as North Carolina (6-4, 3-3 ACC) and Georgia Tech (5-5, 3-4) can finish no better than third or fourth in the division.

It's all but certain the `Canes will be in one of the ACC's Top 5 bowls. The `Canes could go to the Orange, Chick-fil-A, Champs Sports, Sun or Meineke Car Care.

Saturday will go a long way in determining the ACC's bowl landscape. It's obviously way too early to order your tickets and your book flights.

Enjoy the games and speculation in the meantime.

"The Hurricanes have posted back-to-back 500 yards offensive games – both with Morris under center and the first time since 2002".

There should be no question as to who should start Saturday.

mi@mic@ne

Our d backs need to show up against VT and make the field look small with their pursuit. They cant get in retreat mode or standing in concrete mode.. They absolutely need to be on their toes at all times... and they need to be nasty when coming up to run support.

I think Bridewater still comes to Da "U". He has been on record a couple times of saying one of the reasons he wanted to come to Miami was to compete for a job. With Morris (among other freshmen) getting significant playing time at the end of the year just goes to show you that Miami will play Freshmen and you never know who might go down.

raize,
I wonder if Whipple had run the ball the number of times a game he is doing now, how many 500 yd games Jacory has in his career?

Morris is doing fantastic but lets not underestimate what the offensive line and the running backs have done that helped win those games.
Whipple and Morris are a great blend.
Morris has made Whipple a much more effective OC, Whipple can call any play anywhere on the field now.

solarcane

stat
I'd like Teddy to come in.
It would be wonderful to have three qbs that have the ability to win games instead of Highsmith, Whipple, Cook, and Smith just taking up space and scholarships.

Solar but all these superstar QB's want to go to a school and start. They do not want to back up anyone.....they want it all and they want it now.

mi@mic@ne

You got to remember that d cordinators are still questioning whether Morris has the maturity to make the big throw in the rite situation. So in the GT game they loaded up to stop our running game and we were not running well until morris rope to hank ... after that our running game was picking up big chunks of yards cause they had to watch the pass.

canechic,

I here you.
I think Teddy's got a lot of that Jacory "Sell your brand, pink Heisman suit as a sophomore" DNA in him also.

My wife made a pretty good observation about Morris.
She said he is the first guy since Dorsey Portis and Shockey to look like he's having a blast out there.
She is right, even when we were winning games the players and coaches looked uptight.

When A freshman in a high stakes game, looks over to the sideline and tells the HC too loosen up, that's a kid having fun.

Since folks here are quoting the Eagles, here is some classic Queen about Stephen Morris based on canechic's quote:

Adventure seeker on an empty street
Just an alley creeper light on his feet
A young fighter screaming with no time for doubt
With the pain and anger can't see a way out
It ain't much I'm asking I heard him say
Gotta find me a future move out of my way
I want it all I want it all I want it all and I want it now
I want it all I want it all I want it all and I want it now

Ungar

Not sure if it was mentioned in the 660 comments in the previous blog, but I thouhgt something was REALLY interesting about the pass plays.

They were still jump passes to Benjamin, but he went UP for them, and they got there before the defender could really react.

Same call, same receiver, BUT
different QB, different result.

No harm,lets move on

Posted by: solarcane | November 14, 2010 at 09:37 PM

//

Two points:

a) Its funny how human nature works...everyone is ready to move on AFTER having the last word.

b) Both the early 80s era and the early 90s era were pre-Bowl Coalition, pre-BCS. "National Champions" were decided by poll vote only and post-season match-ups were mostly decided by conference tie-in to particular bowls. Hence, #1 vs #2 match-ups were very rare. BYU won a NC in the early 80s...playing whatever schedule they played. And, yes, I recall debate about their SOS even way back then. But, they still won the NC. Given that, IMO Miami would still have won our NCs in the 80s and 90s even if we were somehow a WAC member.

The arrival of the Bowl Coalition (which became the BCS) changed the post-season landscape though. By the mid-90s, changes in the relationship b/w the bowls and the major conferences plus the huge increase in $$ (TV) forced remaining independents to join conferences - UM, FSU, PSU, etc with ND being a lone exception - since it became obvious that independents would be left out of the NC picture as the BCS system came into being.

Its taken mid-major programs such as BSU and TCU (and Utah) almost 15 years, and several high-profile Ws in BCS bowls, to even become part of the discussion. One has yet to play for a NC.

It seems to me that those guys are working as hard or even harded to bust up the existing college football hierarchy as the old CANES did back in "The Day". Funny that once U become a fully invested member of the Establishment, U then find ways to hate on the outsiders. Those guys are trying to do what we did way back when...bust open some doors and demand a seat at the table.

Just my opinion

Morris is the type QB we should be recruting, a pro-style QB. He is better suited, than "Int Harris" for this offense. Harris gets into trouble when he tries to throw deep, which is where most of his ints happen. Harris has done some nice things for the team when he's not throwing to the wrong team. I say let Morris continue this roll he's on and if he falters, we have J-12 to fall back on.
The thing that irks me about this season is that Virginia game, what a dam waste. It's a shame because I believe we have top 10 talent and we've pissed a great opportunity away, with lackadasical play. I hope the real "U" shows up this weekend against Va. Tech.

true. Buuut...looking at the record books, J12 has been very prolific during his UM career, especially with Whip as the OC. The numbers have been good to great. The entire team, defense and ST included, have simply laid eggs at times and played uninspired at others. A loss (or two) each season that is reasonable - FSU game can go either way in any given year; OSU on the road; etc - and a loss that should have been a win - think VA. J12 hasn't looked "on" this entire season and I think missing spring may have had a lot to do with it. Unfortunately for him, his time might have already passed given how well Morris is playing. By the time J12 get "it" together, if he does, it may well be too late.

Ungar

Well, one thing that will be different from the previous two GT-UM games, GT called of the dogs two years ago, UM called off the dogs last year. Paul Johnson is stressing out about Randy's chop block comments, and Randy is feeling the soup (no relation) getting a little too hot for him, he is in need of a "statement" game that is not like the statement Virginia left on the bottom of his shoes.
