As the Miami Hurricanes head into their next ACC contest against Georgia Tech in Atlanta UM the Hurricanes' season and head coach Randy Shannon's coaching career literally hangs in the balance.
And if you think for one minute that it doesn't then you should consider this:
Technically Miami must beat Georgia Tech today and hope for a VT loss to North Carolina to set up a winner take all match between the Hurricanes and the Hokies next Saturday in Miami.
Miami took care of the Turtles last week and now must take the sting out of the Yellow Jackets to keep their ACC title hopes alive for the 2010 season.
Technically Randy Shannon will complete his fourth season as head coach at Miami on 11/27/10 against USF at Sun Life Stadium and has never even come close to winning an ACC Championship.
Georgia Tech under Paul Johnson has.
Shannon's overall record as of now is 27-20 and 14-16 in the ACC.
Technically that is not good. Technically that stinks for a school like Miami.
Techincally that could get U fired even if you are graduating all of your players.
He has to win out this year or face serious consequences and watch as Georgia Tech's band (seen above outside of Raymond James Stadium) plays at the ACC title game while Miami sits at home.
Technically we think Coach Shannon can get the job done and that he will this Saturday. He simply must. He absolutely has to.
GO MIAMI, BEAT GEORGIA TECH!!!
1st?...Ready to tailgate...whos with me
Posted by: UMike | November 13, 2010 at 06:03 AM
Surprised to hear people still think Shannon's job is in the balance.
Not so fast my friend... Shalala LOVES RS and his graduation rates.
I think if we get a good start today we're home free... but a slow start for our Canes could mean a long day.
GO UNC! Beat VA Tech!
Go Canes Beat GA Tech!

Interesting thought Roach.
So based on a head to head comparison of graduation rates, we're undefeated this year probably have been for the past couple of years.
Posted by: Old Skool | November 13, 2010 at 07:38 AM
In Shalala's view... YES.
In MY view... no RING, no perfection...
But, as I've said before, I'm just an Alumnus and a fan... I'm not allowed to hire & fire...
I have a friend who's a Gator, (yeah, yeah... I know, I know), but, he makes a good point comparing RS to Ron Zook... a hard worker, decent recruiter, won "just enough" games to get your hopes up, but never came through with the consistent big wins.
Lucky for my friend, THEY don't care as much about quality students and graduation rates in Gainesville. (Zook was given his walking papers.)
Let's Go Canes! Wreck the Wreck!

But, having said all that, it's nice to NOT have the National Press calling for the end to our football program anymore... or to see U arrest reports on the ESPN bottom line crawl.
Posted by: roachcane77 | November 13, 2010 at 08:11 AM
So let me get this straight........
We win today, and VT loses, and we beat VT next week, regardless of what happens between us & USF, and VT & UVA.......we still go to the ACCCG?
Wouldn't we still have to beat USF, assuming VT beats UVA?
At best we'd (us and Tech) both be 9-3 with two conf losses. We can't go at 8-4, with Tech sitting at 9-3, despite us owning the head to head, can we?

hurri,
Out of conference wins and losses wouldn't come into the formula.
We have to beat GT, VT
VT has to lose twice in conference, once to us.
Posted by: solarcane | November 13, 2010 at 08:47 AM
We may have the greatest graduation rate with demanding point averages, and we will be known as just a higher education school with high grad rates. One of so many. But not every school can kick butt like we used to and are trying to bring it back, but Shalala is going to put a wrench in it again. We will not get the guys because they can't get high grades, etc.Let the rest of the school graduate with good grades, but I want an exceptional school with the best football team. That is slowly slipping away and it's sad. Pretty soon we will not have any of the top picks in the country. And most of us will be ticked to no end.

Mary Lou you know I love you but just because you have a * by your name does not mean you are great.(Boise St, Oregon, TCU) Football today is a different world and Shalala is not in control of NCAA rules. Some schools like LSU,WVU(check out Noel Devine's grades and scores very sad, they were on the JR High level) FSU, can get away with some of these poor grade school issue and believe me when I tell compared to the student body requirements the football players have it way easy and I could bring a few students on here who would attest to that. Not sure if you recall what happened at FSU but this is a great eye opening read for you:
http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/seminoles/espn-report-says-fsu-ignored-academic-problems-to-118943.html
The 2001 team was full of academic overachievers and they sure as hell were ballers.
By the way what ever happened to Pat Devlin?

pb,
I agree. GT is not very good at all. Especially with a nub at QB in an offense that relies on such precise timing and execution. They should have no chance. I was not impressed with either GT or VT after watching that match-up. I thought for sure we would be controlling our own again until I saw Nesbitt's arm snap and along with it the hopes of an ACCCG for the canes. I just don't think UNC has enough to win. As canesteeler says, I hope to eat crow on that one. We shall see.
Oh, btw, going to the Roger Waters concert tonight. Going to be sweet.

Is Stanford as hard to get into as Miami, I don't know, I'm just asking.
Stanford hase to recruit against as good competition as we do, USC, UCLA, Cal.
I think we can be a fine academic school and a football power too.
We just haven't got the guy that gets the most from his players regardless of their talent level.

This is for the student body and take notice they look at every application and also remember if you are the son or daughter of an alumnus you can gain entrance as long as your grades are decent. Now if that alumnus is a huge booster_________, you can fill in the blank.
The University of Miami uses a holistic admission process in which all parts of a student's application are considered. Every application receives a full and comprehensive evaluation. We base our admission decision on the student's academic strength and how competitive that student is in the applicant pool.
There is no minimum GPA or test score requirement for admission. The Admission Committee does not recalculate high school GPAs. We use the GPA (weighted and/or unweighted) provided by your high school. Although not a requirement, a competitive freshman student for admission has a strong A-/B+ average, around a 1320 SAT and/or around a 30 ACT test score, and ranks in the top 10% of their graduating class.
Keep in mind that a student who meets all of these criteria is not guaranteed admission; however, the closer a student is to this profile, the more competitive that student is for admission.

NCAA Division I Academic Eligibility Requirements
The following academic eligibility requirements are posted by the NCAA at www.ncaastudent.org.

Stanford is much harder to get into. Also Cal is extremely difficult to get into (more so than UM). USC is on par with UM, but their academic standards are not even close to being applied to the athletics there. UCLA is much more difficult to get into than FSU.
The thing about Stanford is, you are taking a small sample size of football success. They were irrelevant forever until these past 2 seasons. Let's see if they can keep it going.

The Oceanview Inn & Sports Pub in Islamorada, Florida is truly one of the great "Key-Z" destinations in the fabulous Florida Keys.
In 1996 former Pittsburgh Steelers standout Gary Dunn, and former Los Angeles Rams All-Pro Dennis Harrah purchased the Oceanview Inn. The two friends immediately started a complete renovation project with the goal of making the Inn an affordable, tourist-friendly location, while preserving its history and local charm.
Gary Dunn was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1976 following a stellar career at the University of Miami. Gary was a mainstay on the vaunted Steelers' defense for 12 seasons, serving as team captain four years. The two-time Super Bowl champion is ranked ninth in the Steelers' all-time sacks list, having taken-down such legendary Hall of Fame quarterbacks as Joe Namath, Bob Griese and Jim Kelly.
Today, Gary and his wife Caron live the Keys lifestyle with their two children and enjoy entertaining and hosting both friends and guests at their Oceanview Inn & Pub!

Miami's all time winning percentage is .638
Stanford is .589
We were only relevant for 19 years in the world of college football.
We did all our NC winning in a very brief segment of football history.
There seems to be a notion that Miami was a big time football program for a lot of years which isn't really true.
A program like Alabama that has 13 National Championships from 1925 up to 2009, now that is being a relevant program.

Solar that is correct and Miami was founded in 1925 as a very small school. Some of these other school's history goes back to the 1880's....stanford 1891, duke 1838, VA 1819, Wake forest 1834, UNC 1789
Posted by: canechic | November 13, 2010 at 10:31 AM
Solar...now U are REALLY reaching!
To compare Stanford to Miami in the modern football era (1970 to current) is simply ridiculous.
Nobody here has ever or will ever talk about college football in 1957, 1925 or 1896.
In the 20 year period from (1983-2003) Miami was one of the top 3 winningest or "BIGGEST" football programs in the Country.
Stanford is NOT.
