Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Beer, it matters for NEXT year. It matters for the cohesion of this team going down the stretch THIS YEAR.

They have no confidence in J12. NONE. They don't even treat him like he's a member of the team any more.

So it seriously matters.

And even if UNC doesn't beat VT, if we win out, just look at the momentum that will give the program heading into next year.

It matters a great deal.

BEERicane

This year is this year. Next year is next. Morris will get his shot in the offseason regardless of his PT the rest of the way out.

Momentum does not matter from one season to the next. You can come up with equal arguments as to why it does and why it doesn't. Therefore, overall it is not predictive of success the following season.

See Alabama and Oregon. Alabama had all of the momentum last year going into this year. Oregon had NONE especially after the OSU dismantling and the loss of Masoli.

So in the end, it matters very little.

If we win out - do we go to the championship game?

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Alabama and Oregon were not programs on the ropes with a HC flailing and on the verge of losing his team.

For THIS team, it matters a great deal. For this coach, the prospect of losing another game or two or winning out is a 180 degree proposition.

If Bama or Oregon lose it's just a loss. If RS loses, it's his head.

For THIS team, it matters a great, great deal.

solarcane

And didn't our man Kenny D. step in and takeover in exactly the same situation as Morris??

Capt,
I could be wrong here but it seems Dorsey came in and started three game while Kelly was hurt.

Then we played GT in a bowl game and Kelly was healed, so he started even though Dorsey was setting records already.

solarcane

I don't think it matters a bit.

Next year you will have Jacory, Morris and Bridgewater fighting it out.
You will have Shannon keeping the team confused and unsure who their real lesader is until 10 days before the start of the season.
Shannon is useless as far as communicating confidence to his players.

There doesn't need to be any continuation.
There was no continuation of anything when the 4th string qb comes into a game and takes over.

Don't start sweating what will happen next year until we finish this year.

SOUP

Will be having dinner with Fiore and Dimare Friday the 19th. around 7pm. then the bar after. Would like to meet you Soup and talk about the old Killian and Cane days.

I'm sure it wouldn't be boring.

I would love to join U if I can and do a blog feature on those guys. I'll be there for the VT game on 11/20. I'll let U know soon.

If I can't make it maybe U can do the interview and write it up for the blog?

Nope, we need UNC to upset VT this Saturday for us to have a shot. If that don't happen, it is back to lower tier bowls no matter what we do against VT.

I see a win over Georgia Tech, loss to Virginia Tech, win over USF.

If that occurs, what bowl are we looking at?

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer | November 08, 2010 at 11:39 AM

I'll be forever greatful to Kirby on that last drive against FSU - both him and Darnell "Nuke" Jenkins, who made some nice catches, going up and getting the ball

Kirby stood in there and took a rib crusher on that winning TD throw in the corner to Dedrick Epps, remember him rolling on the ground and trying to get up but couldn't. Then, a hobbled Kyle Wright limped onto the field to go for a 2 pt. conversion

But man did Kirby look awful in a whole lot of other games. When he couldn't even throw the ball to the WRs feet, but threw it on a bounce? and he wasn't even under pressure when he did it

Against Oklahoma, wasn't he 3 of 9 for 17 yards?

Against NCState, 1 of 14 for 84 yards and 3 INTs

How the hell do you go 1 for 14? I bet Matt Perrelli would've done better than that, and didn't it seem like that guy had been around for at least 8 years?

I'll never forget that FSU drive for Kirby and I'll always respect that he stood in there and took that nasty hit, but, he never really showed in all his games the type of promise that Morris has shown in his 1.5 games, as a true Frosh. You don't see Morris skipping passes to WRs and you see that the kid can roll out of the pocket to try and direct traffic when the pocket breaks down, then can take off and run

The kid is only going to get bigger as well

SOUP

Posted by: Bad Bart | November 08, 2010 at 01:22 PM

In a "Kirby" kind of way, yeah it sucks.

But it's close to me so I'm cool with that. My convenience certainly outwieghs the team's success, right?

Bad Bart

Soup,

Sorry, I will disagree. I would rather watch them on TV in the National Championship game rather than be able to drive to the game.

Now if the National Championship Game was played right here in Columbia, I would be stoked.

But I see what you mean. Hopefully, they will show up and get the W.

ACC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Stephen Morris, Miami, QB, Fr., 6-2, 183, Miami, Fla.

(Monsignor Pace) Morris, a true freshman making his first career start, completed 18-of-30 passes against Maryland, but none was bigger than the final completion for a 35-yard touchdown to Leonard Hankerson with 37 seconds to play. The touchdown pass gave the `Canes a 26-20 win and capped off an impressive debut for the rookie. Morris threw for 286 yards, a single-game high for any UM quarterback this season, and also rushed for 13 yards.

Oregon though also had 10 returning starters on Offense, with the entire OLine returning (3 Seniors on it). They lost Masoli, but had returning Pac-10 Player of the Year LeMichael James coming back to help out Darron Thomas - and the way Chip Kelly runs that Offense with the type of mis-matches it produces at the LOS

Their D led the Pac-10 in sacks last year and was 4th in scoring - they didn't lose that many players on D after last year

But to score less than 52 points only 3 times so far this year? That's insane

Bama losing those 8 starters on D hurt them. How many teams have you ever seen coming off of a National Championship, lose 8 starters on their Defense and make it back? That's a tall ass order, esp. when that Defense was 2nd in the nation in Total Defense and Scoring Defense

Not only that, but losing Javier Arenas back there to field kicks/punts hurts as well

Bama's D hasn't been that bad, they gave up what, 35 to South Carolina and 24 to LSU as their only 2 losses? Their Offense should be putting up better numbers if anything, with the best RB combo in the nation

I'm just putting the difference between Oregon and Bama out there, not agreeing or disagreeing either way

DallasTX Cane

J12 is having a bad season no doubt. Great start for Morris no doubt. Hope for the future?...definitely; with young OL performing well, young RBs and Morris.

Word of caution...all the same was said of J12 over the last three years. I've read all the armchair quarterbacking and understand all about Morris. Just saying its gut-check time for J12 and if he comes thru and triumphs over this adversity, he can be successful. Will he tho? I don't claim to know. Also, Morris is a true freshman and has a lot to learn and a lot of growth to do. I don't care how much of a "natural" anyone thinks he is; "coaching him up" in order to really become a good-great player is a process and he's not there yet. He showed a lot of potential. I hope he fulfills it.

One game at a time guys is the way to deal with this team. Don't OD if they lose and don't buy a new trophy case if they win. We've all seen over the last 5 years that a W or a L one week doesn't mean jack-squat the next.

BTW - MD, regardless of their record or whatever the TV announcers said, is not a good team. They're average at best. It was a good win for the CANES but isn't necessarily significant in the long term - it was one they were supposed to win no matter which QB played. The deal since loss # 2 has been win out or disappoint. Thats still the deal.

DTX, I agree

SOUP

Sacks by in the ACC:

1. Florida State 9 38 230
2t. NC State 9 27 167
2t. Miami 9 27 176
4. Clemson 9 24 139
5. Virginia Tech 9 22 156
6. Maryland 9 19 129
7. Boston College 9 16 104
8. Georgia Tech 9 15 94
North Carolina 9 15 113
Virginia 9 15 104
11. Wake Forest 9 14 86
12. Duke 9 8 48

So much for leading the NCAA much less the ACC in sacks with 48 for the year huh?

Now who was it that said that?

11. Virginia 9 68 631 70.1
12. Miami 9 83 679 75.4

I didn't know the season was completely over.
We have conceded that we have eleminated ourselves from competeing for the Coastal and the ACC?
I thought quitting was the attitude that was unacceptable for the players.

VT hasn't beaten UNC yet
GT hasn't beaten us yet
VT hasn't beaten us yet.
We don't beat us, and Yates gets in the zone who knows.

UNC gets up for big games.
GT is playing with a pretty average second team qb
We are due to have one of those M"an if we only played like that 12 times a year" games.

Agreed. Watching the game and then again watching the highlights, MD had 8 in the box damn near the whole game, and Miami still had a lot of success running the ball.
They also played a lot of Cover 3, I believe their thinking was to stop the run and make Morris beat em', neither of which worked...

Six

DTX, if you look at Maryland's wins leading up to the Canes ...

Navy, Morgan State, FIU, Duke, Boston College, Wake Forest

They got blown out by Clemson and lost by 2 TDs to the Couch Burners in Morgantown

That's also why those stats that were posted about Maryland's 3rd Down percentages or average rushing/passing/whatever per game needed to be looked at more closely considering who they have played leading up to the Canes

The thing I think most people are believing in with Morris is, he was the OCoordinator's guy he picked out of Pace from what is being said by a lot of sources. If he can get coached up as you say by Whip, then the future is good. Whip saw something in the kid that told him he can run his type of O. I don't know if anyone can say how many of the other QBs that have been here recently were really picked by the OCoordinator at the time.

Wright had a bunch of different OCs. Kirby, who knows. Marve was headed to Bama when Shula was there. Jacory was here before Whip - dunno if he was Nix's guy or not.

As solar and others have said, Jacory will probably start. If he f's up a couple of times, we'll see what happens - if he gets benched or not. We'll see if he can handle legit competition now

carolinacane

Whoever we have at QB needs to figure out how to go a game without throwing 2 int's. Penalties, Ints and our kicking game which one will be our demise against Ga. Tech? Look, there is no question who has the most talent in the ACC but the sad part is we figure out how to keep these teams in the game every week. We can never put the back-ups in to play any minutes because we can't even put these scrub teams away. Duke, Va., & Maryland, we should be blowing these teams away by at least 20 pts or more and yeah, I know Mary was 6 & 2 coming in but who had they beat?

Six

If the Canes beat the Bumblebees this Saturday at noon ... then the game this Saturday with North Cackalacka vs. VTech is enormous and the Miami vs. VTech game most likely will be a 8pm game, if VTech loses to Butch

It's crazy, but, the Canes could still go to the ACC Championship

we need better management... after the final score we had the kicker in for an xtra point making it a 5 point game. the right call was to go for 2. if the terps dont jump offside we would of attempted it. this is inexcusable... you make try to make it a 6 point game.

willie will in nashville

im down for m&m, morris and miller

i love j12 and berry, but u can obviously see that the offense is better with m&m. true enough that it was just one game but j12 doesn't have the arm strength to be successful here and berry still isn't a true running back to me although he does run hard and he has had some good games. miller is a complete back, a first round back, he reminds me of run dmc(darren mcfadden)

When Whipple calls a deep ball in double coverage to a 5'9 wr who dont fight for the ball..and when they pick the ball and all our super fast skill players make no attempt to tackle..then lets see how much you all love Morris lol
