If you have been paying attention lately then you definitely would have noticed that there are plenty targets of blame "flying around" Greentree Practice Field these days.
The once proud Miami Hurricanes football program appears to be teetering towards the brink of being rendered irrelevant not only for this season but what seems to possibly be a permanent basis.
And depending who you ask it could be any body's fault but "mine". While blame to go around seems plentiful, ownership and accountability seem to be in short supply in Coral Gables.
Not a single person, player or coach has stepped up to take responsibility for the Hurricanes dismal 7-4 record in a season filled with such high hopes.
Instead the response from inside the program is more like a poorly written political campaign ad called "Excuses 'R Us." Interviews with the current head coach are starting to sound more like 1980's genre Saturday Night Live comedy skits than real, actual discussions about football.
Randy Shannon is the man in the mirror. And the reflection he sees of himself and his once highly regarded program is not very pretty right now.
So far this year we have learned that Duke is a "tough place to play", that Virginia (4-7, 1-6 ACC) is actually a "very good football team" and don't forget about that entirely new thing in football called "The Process" whatever that is.
All the while and all across the Internet the forgotten fans who supported Shannon and now feel hurt and betrayed have been heard wondering out loud:
- Is it the coaches or players?
- Is it the offense or the defense or special teams?
- Is it Shannon or Whipple?
- Is it recruiting or player development?
- Is it the uniforms, the cheerleaders or the stadium?
Even one time program savior and sure to be hero and resurector himself Jacory Harris and the once dependable and reliable and seemingly untouchable Matt Bosher have found themselves directly in the cross hairs of the blame game this season.
Regardless of who's to blame (and most likely it is all of the above) someone has to step up and fix this mess. And that someone is UM head coach Randy Shannon.
No matter how you slice it the buck stops at Shannon's desk and he must own the team's current record and address the situation to resolve it in an effective manner.
And he needs to do so quickly too.
I was never really a fan of Michael Jackson.
I have always been a fan of Randy Shannon.
In 1989 Jackson won an Grammy Award for his song "Man In The Mirror." Jackson spent much of the next 15 years looking for himself. He never did seem to find whatever it was he was looking for and died a tortured soul as his career and life were cut short in a tragic Hollywood ending.
In 2007 Randy Shannon was hired for his dream job as head coach of the University of Miami football team. Shannon has spent the last four years searching for the right coaches, the right players and the right chemistry to restore the Hurricanes to National prominence.
He has failed to do so.
Now coach Shannon should take some advice from the late Mr. Jackson and stop looking around for people and things to blame. He needs to look straight ahead and accept responsibility. Or else his legeacy could read something like this from one of the King of Pop's songs:
"A willow deeply scarred, somebody's broken heart, and a washed out dream,
They follow the pattern of the wind you see, because they've got no place to be,
That's why I'm starting with me, I'm starting with the man in the mirror,
I'm asking him to change his ways, and no message couldn't have been any clearer,
If you want to make The U a better place, take a look at yourself and make that change."
Randy Shannon needs to take a good, hard, long look in the mirror to see what needs to change.
He needs to do it for The U, for his team and yes even for us the fans.
And he needs to do it now.
First?

DZ, I think we learned something here. no matter how good you are, and how many you have won, a loss is going to come. We had a squeaker early on, kinda wish we would have lost then. You never want to forget that taste, cause it teachs you something as you wisely said. Kind of like eating a crabapple in grandmas back yard on a summer day as a kid: you never forget the bitter sour taste or the little green worm!! We played a team that was very gifted athletically, but traditionally beat themselves with late hits, offsides, arguing amongst players and coaches, clips, holds etc....sound familar? They played very well, and i know a lot of them. I went and watched them win the SB for our conference. If we could not win, I was glad to cheer for them. One of mine called and said he heard I was giving it up....I took a long breath, then told him I will be back....and I will. I am not Bret Favre waivering....I learned my kids need me still. So like you said, we all learned something from it, and I cannot wait for next year. Thanks for the support guys!!!

Wow.
Glorious article.
Randy Shannon needs to look in the mirror, that is true.
Donna Shalala needs to look in the mirror, that is true.
And we, the fans, need to look in the mirror, too.
Think about it. What if we were fans of Northwestern, or Iowa, or Duke, and we had a 5-7, 7-6, 9-4, 9-4 seasons. Would they be freaking out negatively, or would they be happy with what they got.
There is NO divine right to titles here, and perhaps the fans need to lower their expectations. I am not saying to accept mediorcity, but to accept that we are not a football factory, and it will show on the field. The 2001 team was a miracle, not a standard. It was a once in a lifetime event, not a once every three years event.
But yeah, Shannon needs to look in the mirror, like Rocky did, and NOT see that fear coming back at him, but see a desire to pound Clubber Lang into the ground.
If he doesn't have THAT kind of thirst, then he shouldn't be coaching at Miami, or anywhere else.
Posted by: Ungar | November 23, 2010 at 08:47 AM
Unger, I completely disagree....What we had in the 80's and 90's and then again early this decade SHOULD be expected. They raised the bar of excellence, not the fans. It is their responsibility to fix the problem. By them raising the bar so high, they have nobody to blame but themselves for our expectations.
133 Consecutive weeks in the NFL a former Cane has scored a touchdown. That speaks of not only excellence in the players that have attended the U but also of the fact that Miami IS a football factory.
Fire the entire staff. Hire Mark Richt and bring back Art Kehoe!!!

MH- Bowl Game: Canes -vs- Catholics?
Here's some intriguing fodder for University of Miami football fans still lamenting the loss to Virginia Tech and a disappointing season: the Hurricanes could meet Notre Dame in the Hyundai Sun Bowl (Dec. 31 in El Paso) or Champs Sports Bowl (Dec. 28 in Orlando).
``It's possible, very possible,'' Sun Bowl executive director Bernie Olivas said Monday. ``If the Pac-10 doesn't have any teams available when it comes time for us to pick, then we go at-large. We could pick anybody, but obviously Notre Dame is a big draw.''

Two Canes were honored as Atlantic Coast Conference Players of the Week for their performances against Virginia Tech: sophomore offensive lineman Brandon Washington and redshirt freshman tailback Lamar Miller.
Washington, a 6-4, 330-pound guard out of Miami Northwestern High, graded at 98 percent, which helped UM post a season-high 262 rushing yards. He had seven pancake blocks. Miller, a Miami Killian High alum, ran for a season-high 163 yards and a touchdown.

Shannon said he wanted to stress that Harris -- who sustained a concussion Oct. 30 -- would start only if all goes right in practice as far as ``his timing, his rhythm . . . If it's not right, we'll know more in practice.

Shannon could very easily win both of his final two games this season and finish 9-4 -- the same record as last season. Is that good enough to keep his job? Only UM President Donna Shalala really knows. But before you rush to judgement or an opinion, take a deeper look at some numbers I researched this morning.

The ACC announced kickoff has been set for noon for the Miami-South Florida game on Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
Miami (7-4. 5-3 ACC), which lost to Virginia Tech 31-17 Saturday, will host the game.
USF (6-4, 3-3 Big East) is coming off a 17-10 lost to Pittsburgh.
Bowl picture
Here are some bowl scenarios for the 'Canes:
•Hyundai Sun Bowl, Dec. 31, El Paso, Texas (ACC No. 4 vs. Pac-10 No. 4)
Sun Bowl chairman John Folmer wanted Miami as his ACC team before the win against Georgia Tech and still does after the loss to Va. Tech.
"Our position hasn't changed, especially mine," Folmer said. "Having an opportunity to get Miami is something we don't get that often. …They've got great athletes and great tradition. That's important for us in our game."
Champs Sports Bowl, Dec. 28, Orlando (ACC No. 3 vs. Big East No. 2 or Notre Dame)
Assuming UM wins Saturday, "they're right in the middle of our picture," Champs Sports Bowl CEO Steve Hogan said, also listing Florida State, North Carolina State and Maryland. The first two still have a chance to go to the Discover Orange Bowl as the ACC champ.
The 'Canes were here last season. Then again, 2009 was Wisconsin's second consecutive appearance. UM becomes more attractive if Notre Dame receives a bid because of their historical ties.

PBP- Hey SJMParmin, dont beat the messenger
COACHING: This is going to cost me an invitation to Randy Shannon’s annual Christmas party, but the difference between UM and Virginia Tech comes down to this: one team rarely makes mistakes and doesn’t beat itself while the other team is consistently undisciplined and its own worst enemy. Care to match the team with its identity? GRADE: C minus.

NN
Big games are little more than big disappointments these days for the Hurricanes, who fell to a baffling 5-16 since the end of the 2005 regular season in matchups with opponents ranked in the Top 25.
Only nine teams have lost more often to ranked teams during that span, and Miami is 0-3 in those games this season — falling to Ohio State, Florida State and now the Hokies.
So if there is one bright side for the Hurricanes, it's this: Next week's opponent, South Florida, is unranked.

"Unger, I completely disagree....What we had in the 80's and 90's and then again early this decade SHOULD be expected. They raised the bar of excellence, not the fans."
The Miami Dolphins went 17-0 in 1972, and have yet to perform that well again.
Dan Marino threw for 48 TDs and 5000 yards in 1984, and has yet to perform that well again.
That bar of excellence is sometimes not matchable.
"It is their responsibility to fix the problem. By them raising the bar so high, they have nobody to blame but themselves for our expectations."
Two different issues. 1. THEY were setting the expectations, not us. 2. THEY cannot set our expectations.
"133 Consecutive weeks in the NFL a former Cane has scored a touchdown. That speaks of not only excellence in the players that have attended the U but also of the fact that Miami IS a football factory. Fire the entire staff. Hire Mark Richt and bring back Art Kehoe!!!"
Mark Richt, who can't beat the Gators and is barely keeping his job in UGA? Art Kehoe, who is now older that Coker?
Yeah, make a change if Shannon doesn't have it in him to fight for wins.
But change him for someone that fights to win, not just someone that once had a U on their helmet.

I will tell you that Iowa fans are pretty pissed about this season. And they should be. And shame on you for implying that Iowa is a program that is, in its current state, somehow below the caliber of Miami. the truth is that Iowa is a vastly superior team and program relative to Miami at this point in time. For our sake, we just better not get matched up with Iowa in a bowl game. It would be pretty ugly.

Posted by: Ungar | November 23, 2010 at 08:47 AM
There IT is right there.
Funny thing is I think he DOES have that thirst, he just doesn't seem to know how to quench it.
Remember the highly charged emotional scene when Jimmy Johnson was carried off of the field on his players shoulders in 1987 as a National Champion? The smile on his face his arms defiantly raised above his head, his demons finally released at last after a troubled 2005, the disappointing end to the 1986 season in the desert at the Fiesta Bowl?
Just try to imagine the scene being repeated next year this time with Randy Shannon atop his players shoulders as they carry him off the field as National Champs.
Can U imagine the emotions that he, and we, would feel IF that were to happen after all of this turmoil and struggle?
OH MY!
Tears in my eyes listening to the song "Man In The Mirror" and just thinking about that possibility.
In spite of the incredible amount of frustration and anger I have towards the current situation I STILL hold out hope and a prayer that Randy succeeds.
Not many men in their lives get to live their dream as Randy has. To have failed at your lifelong dream would be such a blow to your heart, to your soul, that anything that followed would be so empty, so hollow, so meaningless.
"A willow deeply scarred, sombody's broken heart, and a washed out dream...they follow the pattern of the wind you see, because they got no place to be."
Randy Shannon is exactly where he is supposed to be.
If he fails at Miami he would literally have "no place to be".
If U really, really think about it, that is too sad to even comprehend, don't U think?

Soup,
You wanted to hear something negative from me about something
Its kind of tough to go after some of the players because I get to see them play on film a few times a week and its not as bad as everyone says it is
As for the dropped passes and the penalties theres not much I can add to that.Everyone sees it so what else is there to say
So I guess my one negative, if you want to call it a negative is this:
Whipple should be the HC of this football team. No question about it
Instead of making my comments sound to negative(gosh knows we hear plenty of them here) I try to say positive things about the players/coaches that are doing a decent job instead of attacking the ones that arent performing

beeri,
yea,
I seem to remember how Wisconsin was going to be a pushover.
Too big and slow and no match for Miamis team speed, and our athletes and on an on.
What a lack of respect it was for Miami to face teams like Cal and Wisconsin in bowl games etc.
Then the team that wants the game most and has been prepared to play comes out and runs all over us.

So, obviously he doesn't wanna come here b'coz of how our season is going, but he is content with Clemson having the type of season we're having???
Last time i checked, they're 6-4 and we're 7-4, that's actually one more win than they have.
The U will get criticized for 8-4, 9-3, 10-2 season, but to Clemson that's the expectation every year, no national championship, no problem. Kids/recruits are weird on their own way, go figure.

BEERicane, I am talking about how Iowa is not considered a perennial title contender. I know they would destroy us this year, four close losses to quality teams is different from the three embarrassing losses we had. They even played OSU closer than us.
They were us in the 70s, but didn't suddenly have success in the 80s to our level, so a set of four years going upward from 5-7 to 9-4 would be just fine for their fans.
They are 7-4, just like us, but the fans are not calling for the coaches, head, right?
Erickson is #1 on the Hot Seat List, Richt at #3, but Ferentz has been there 12 years and is quite safe.

I gotta disagree Ungar... in the words of Mark Whipple, "You can go to a division 3 school and NO ONE WOULD CARE."
They come to Miami full well knowing the past glory and greatness. Some of them might think they just need to put the uniform on and that it will be theirs as well.
C'mon Randy, make that change, bench the players who consistently screw up and let your actions speak louder than your, so-far, hollow words. Everyone is rooting for you. Most are just tired of defending you.

They see what it takes to get there but are they actually doing what it takes to get there?
Gino Torretta said what he sees happen that never used to happen here is the next guy doesn't step up if the guy beside him wiffs.
He said every player good or great makes a bad play, but in the past the other guys were so focused they could overcome one of them missing a play.
Think back to Lewis Sapp and Marley.
Remember when Marley would over run a play exactly like C-mac does?
Kevin Patrick or Lewis or Sapp would be right there and crush the guy.
When our current guys wiff
The other players look down at their shoes and wait for Brandon Harris or Sean Spence to try and save the rest of them.
I think that is exactly how it is going.

Sebas, the only answer is what James Jackson used hwen he committed- it's the Univ. of Miami. The U has never been about a coach, and now is the time to come because they can't offer too many kids right now.
Times have changed, we aren't on probation, but we don't have many scholarships to offer this year, so if you think you got what it takes, come now. And don't worry about who your coach is going to be in 2 years.
Posted by: j.w. | November 23, 2010 at 10:54 AM
The article from Manny's blog about Sam Shields says it all. This coaching staff hasn't had the light come on. It may never come on. How long does it take for them to get in a groove with coaching, development, teaching, etc? Obviously the secondary, linebackers, and WR have received limited coaching the last few years. The only improved players have been Hank and Harris and I think that improvement came on their own. Those groups as a whole continue to make the same mistakes and have no instinct on the developing play. I think mainly because they haven't been taught opposing offenses and defenses.

Adam Kuperstein of NBC6 Miami is reporting via Twitter: Jacory
Harris is 100% healthy, but Stephen Morris will start at QB for the
Miami Hurricanes vs USF

The good news is we have a small recruiting class this year. The bad news is we have a big recruiting class next year and no sure thing our problems will be solved by then.

Then give Shannon one more year with the small class coming in and IF he doesn't get it done next year then bring in a new coach for the big recruiting class of 2012.

The problem is the turmoil of a new coach will affect that big recruiting class. It'll give us some momentum but it isn't ideal.
If a change is to be made it is better to do it now.
I don't think a change will be made this year so we all just have to hope for the best.

The future of RS took a huge hit Saturday
That was something he just couldnt afford. RS needed to win these last 3 games to make it a sure thing for next year
He had better hope for 2 blowout wins and an inspired team if hes going to have a better then 50/50 chance to make it to next year

YUP. If they come out flat or God forbid lose to USF then it is officially ova!

Hey Soup,
I hate to say it, but just like a parent allows their kid to fail so that they learn and grow, I am hoping for two straight losses against USF and whomever we get in the bowl game. Maybe then we can get Mark Richt!!!
Come home Mark Richt!!

Nice article.
Basically Shannon needs to man up.
A little opening up on his part might not hurt either.

SSIB: Sammy Watkins probably found it easier academically to get into Clemson. We also have THAT to contend with
