OK, here is a tough Hurricane football trivia question for U:
Q: What do former UM players QB Ken Dorsey, P Todd Sievers, S Mo Sikes, RB Jarrett Payton, OL Rashad Butler, LB Rocky McIntosh, DL Braka Atkins, RB Tyrone Moss, RB Javaris James and OL A.J. Trump all have in common?
A: They all have played in the annual East-West Shrine game.

John Philip Sousa (pronounced /ˈsuːsə/;[1] November 6, 1854 – March 6, 1932) was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era, known particularly for American military and patriotic marches. Because of his mastery of march composition, he is known as "The March King" or the "American March King" due to his British counterpart Kenneth J. Alford also being known as "The March King".

Posted by: dj moonbat | January 22, 2011 at 12:17 PM
" The fact that UM isn’t in stronger position with Dwyer quarterback Jacoby Brissett is proof that recruiting under former coach Randy Shannon was a mess, according to long-time recruiting analyst Tom Lemming. “It just shows you they didn’t seem to know what they were doing in a lot of ways,” said Lemming, adding that Shannon’s staff was guilty of “poor recruiting management.” Lemming is a big proponent of Golden’s but said the best UM’s new coach can hope for is a “solid class.” Said Lemming: “Next year will be a great indication of how good a recruiter he is. I guarantee you next year he’ll have a Top 10 class. Right now, they’re trying to play catch-up, flying by the seat of their pants. While other coaches have been building a relationship over a year, he was at Temple not recruiting any of these guys [that UM is now pursuing].” " Georgie Milian, palmbeachpostsports
***************************
Senor Manny wasn't " diplomatic " with his dizzing of one Randy Shannon, as Lemming was in the brief note above.
For instance, I believe Mandingo said Shannon became absolutely LAZY in the recruiting game the past two seasons. No.
So, Rivera was correct after all regarding Randy.

Sam Shields excels as a Green Bay cornerback after being a disappointment as a Miami Hurricanes receiver
By Jorge Milian
Two years ago, Sam Shields was a little-used receiver at the University of Miami who spent more time in coach Randy Shannon's doghouse than he did on the field.
Now a rookie cornerback in the NFL, Shields is playing a central role for a stellar Green Bay defense that is one victory away from the Super Bowl.
"I never thought of this," Shields told reporters this week as the Packers prepared to visit Chicago on Sunday to play for the NFC title. "It's crazy.
"This is my first championship game ever since Pop Warner flag football. I don't count that, and plus we lost, so I mean it's very exciting for me."
Although Shields went undrafted and signed with Green Bay for a $7,500 bonus and a minimum contract, he has made an impact this season.
Listed as a backup to All-Pro Charles Woodson, Shields plays regularly as the Packers' nickel back. He has two interceptions and 32 tackles in 14 regular-season and two playoff games. He has started seven games this season.
Shields, who also has returned 21 kicks for an average of 21.5 yards, has played so well that Green Bay cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt made this prediction in November: "Write this down. Sam is going to be one of the top corners in this league in two years."
That might surprise UM fans who remember Shields as something of a bust. After catching 37 passes for 501 yards as a freshman in 2006, his numbers and playing time tumbled. Shannon suspended him for three games in his sophomore season for undisclosed reasons and he was relegated almost entirely to special teams as a junior. He had just 11 catches for 124 yards that season.
But while others may have seen a lost cause, Wesley McGriff saw a potential gem in the versatile athlete from Sarasota.
"I had been talking to Sam over a year and a half," said McGriff, UM's defensive backs coach from 2007 until he was dismissed in December by new coach Al Golden. "I kept telling him, 'Hey, you're a big-time defensive back wasting your time at receiver.' "
Shields didn't take McGriff seriously until his playing time dwindled.
"He took me up on it," said McGriff, now an assistant at Vanderbilt. "That was a big risk that he took, changing positions as a senior. But he had a mind-set that no matter what, he was going to be successful."
Shields started 10 games as a senior and an impressive performance at UM's Pro Day raised his stock. But his arrest in March for misdemeanor possession of marijuana probably assured that he would go undrafted. The drug charge was later dropped after Shields paid court costs.
Shields had his first interception - college or pro - on Nov. 7 against Dallas and followed with another pick against the New York Giants on Dec. 26.
"He's been great, man," Woodson told The Green Bay Press-Gazette. "I think you have a young guy who came in who really had no fear, came in with a ton of athletic ability. He took the challenge of being an undrafted player and having an opportunity to come in and play for this team."
Not bad for a guy who struggled to get on the field at UM.
"Sam has gone through a lot in his career," said Randy Phillips, Shields' former teammate at UM. "But he hung in there."

So, how many other former and or current Cane players had/did Shannon put the " handcuffs on! "
Because it seems Randy went too far when he dished out punishment.

Let me see if I've got this right: Coker recruits Shields. Shields persists in dropping passes for three years. Shannon gets him on the field as a DB. Shields not only gets to the NFL as a DB, but thrives.
This means that Shields shows WHAT WAS WRONG with Shannon? Shields, and to a lesser extent Hankerson and Dixon, are Shannon's success stories.

Did yous even READ the story about Sammy, djmoonbat!
Because, Shannon demoted Shields his ENTIRE junior season on special teams! For misconduct unbecoming of a Hurricane, and Sammy paid the price for his misdeed during his sophomore season.
That's what I infer as being absolutely EXTREME with the punishment matter of a Miami sort.
Yeah, yeah djmoonbat, I know. It was Randy's team and he could do what he wanted to when it came to playing the role of judge, jury and executioner.

Did Shannon make a good enough head coach? No, of course not. But Sam Shields seems to have done GREAT in the end -- certainly better than he ever would have at WR.
It's OK to say that Shannon f***ed up enough things that he had to go. There's just no need to keep finding ways that he failed (especially in the case of Shields); he got fired, and it's just time to move on.

absolutely shocked at mandingo's take on the shannon regime
Posted by: 954cane | January 22, 2011 at 01:53 PM
All over this blog and the others, extreme display of shanon (not bashing) mauling is going on. I remember when Coker was here, we couldn't criticize sam shields enough. He was under performing, grossly. His athleticism was never in question. It was just his play. Now, u get in a bunch of new wide outs that were making plays. Why would you not play them over a struggling player? You have to praise Shannon for letting him change position. If he had gone out as a receiver, he wouldn't have cracked any NFL roaster. Listen, shanon's only sin was not developing players, not benching under performing players. For these, he payed the price. Do not go at him for anything else. His players worked out hard in the off season. He drafted NFL prototypical players with size and weight. Now you blame him for not recruiting this school and recruiting the other school, he recruited the same studs other schools were going after. He just didn't develop the players.
My fravourite criticism is his language or dictions. If you don't know what Miami inner city is like, I suggest you take a visit to OPA LOCKA. It ain't Preety and they don't speak the queens English either. Shannon is a product of that community. Yes he graduated! But common, we all know what footballers graduating means, especially back then. They had most of the $hit done for them. The important education Shannon received which is what you expect in going to a university is being a functional, rational, productive member of society that makes a difference in that society. Which he does. Who would give a fock about diction and language if he had won? And I think it smells of prejudice. It asserts the same old notion that you only give a $hit about a black athelete when they are on the field or court, but you snide them in the community at large.....don't even get me started.
Get off shannon's diikc!!!!

The talent he left is ready and hungry to learn and Goldie will see that fire is hot on their azz!

Hankerson, Harris, Franklin, Bailey, Cooper, McCarthy and Berry will all make NFL rosters and be solid NFL contributors. Hill, Bosher and others will also have a shot.
Even though UM had a down year (2010) on the field, there are not many college teams can claim to have so many players capable of making NFL rosters this year.
Posted by: WindyCane1 | January 22, 2011 at 04:29 PM

Sorry bruhs, but is it really hi-time to get off the man (Randy's) prick! Don't we need more of this catharsis of the highest order?
Is this stuff turning into a new type of lynching originated/inspired by bloggers in the Internet age?
When RS was around, we, including bloggers here & elsewhere, said that Randy is the one that was handcuffed ==> by Shalala and UM Administrators! That he had to stay away from thugs, academic strugglers, and had to implement swag behavior-taming procedures. Here, we wrote about how UM Staff wanted Shannon to keep away former canes. Do we remember when Lamar Thomas lost his job when he glamorized violence in the FIU/UM brawl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQQi6-4Dnxk&safety_mode=true&persist_safety_mode=1 and UM & M.-Irving moved to refudiate (go Palin) Lamar? ... and the rest of such Alumnus?
Yes, there are some, i.e., Mandingo, who exalted RS and excused some of the "few" apparent failings of his recruiting by intimating in no uncertain terms that UM could not secure recruits of the like of Patrick Johnson because other coaches were cheating, i.e., LSU, and how Shannon would not cater to such tactics. Even still, Mandingo would opine, he still brought in top recruits year after year.
And now these same Mandingos, i.e., JMilian, etc., are so upset that they had FAILED to realize and/or just failed to out/report apparent shortcomings of Shannon then that they just want to let all that guilt-blood out now! Is this the final guilt for failing to report the truth, as they saw it, to the stakeholders? And the guilt and shame is turning to the bloodletting? Is this a purging and cleansing period of the atrocities we endured along our UM players under Shannon?
Should it really be that serious? Is it really that serious?
Do we need a Truth Commission instead?
This Shannon Bashing Era of bloodletting reminds me of some of the worse times in our human history where brothers turned against brothers and folks got burned at the stake, and guilt pervaded families. Underneath all that back then, there was an emotional tragedy felt in families. Shannon is truly one of our own; born, bred, nurtured, raised, and educated by our own University of Miami. In turn, he loved, gave, nurtured, graduated, cleaned up & gave to the University and its people. Shannon was always in Miami or with its people for virtually his entire life. For a zillion of reasons, uncovered or not, Randy did not win enough nor succeed as HC at his Alma mater, and he had to go. The fact that he was one of our own is further tragic in and of itself.
Yet, we have to move on. We have to bury not Shannon, but our own emotions of disappointment & disillusionment with the recent history of our beloved football team, and turn our feelings into the hope for a better tomorrow, and the better days so clearly lying ahead at the []_[].

I don't think anybody is transferring anywhere, and that's only because if ur a player on this roster...simply put...why would you ??? Fresh start, young, ballsy, coach with some street cred...why would you??? You KNOW you're going to have a FAIR SHOT to be looked at when workouts begin too so hey...
If there are some guys thate were to transfer, I just think they would be one of the positions with ALOT of depth such as the TE position. 1 or 2 of those guys is bound to get lost in the shuffle due to the sheer # of guys we currently have there and who knows how many guys we add at that position. We already got B. Sanders, A. Tallman, C. Walford, S. Plein, A.J. Cleveland, C. Ford, AND new edition B. Ayles. Hopefully those #'s make a guy step up to prove they belong. Who are the maybe's...Fulse and Debose??? And is Jordan Futch moving back to LB??? (I hope he does) I mean dayum !!!
I honestly don't think a MLB would transfer because going into the spring, the guys listed @ MLB are ALL young...Nelson, Cain, and Perryman...they all have a chance there so unless they're related to Arthur Brown, I don't see them dippin' out...injuries do happen.
I guess maybe an O-lineman might want to transfer out or a guy like CJ Holton who seems to be a career backup.
Just my take...from a Cane fan that doesn't have all the inside scoop but isn't the average fan either...
U Kno !!!
