Does Justin have any inside info on an OL coach hire?

roachcane77

There's a "limit" to how much ANY high school recruit should be "stroked."

Especially by the U... we shouldn't have to "beg" any kid to be a part of the U family.

If we DO, they don't belong here.

That's what HE said, as in Randy Shannon. Look where he's at now.

86Cane

Justin...Give us the campus mood around the new coaching hires?

86Cane

We recently had an article titled:

"IT'S THE QB STUPID!"

What's your perspective on the 2011 UM QB battle?

Justin_WVUM

Well the Golden hire occurred during winter break so haven't be able to get the students pulse but I do know the fan base was ready for Shannon to be gone and they like Al's deamnor and approach. I think everyone is just anxious to see if he can make a seamless transition from Temple to Miami. Too drastically different cultures

Justin_WVUM

IMHO there should not be a battle. J12 proved he cannot get it done. He's 0-3 in bowl games. The job should be Stephen Morris's to lose. He has more velocity so defensive backs don't have as much time to creep on wide recievers since the ball has more zip.

86Cane

Just exactly how big was Shannon's dog house and were U ever in it?

Justin_WVUM

The only thing really to be optimisic about with this team not including the APR and Grad Rats is the O-line and RBs.

86Cane

orange 'n green in the vein

Justin, why did Arthur Brown only excel at 15 yard face-mask penalties in between spot special team tackles and will any of these high profile national recruits from far away places set to join the class of '11 fair any better than he did and why is that in your opinion?

Justin_WVUM

I personally didn't have the best relationship with Randy. He wasn't friendly, always terse with the media and when I asked him last spring what does Tommy Streeter need to do to crack the starting rotation he stared me down and said "yall don't listen do you? just like everyone they got to work hard and earn it" typical cliche.

He shielded players from the media and assistant coaches

86Cane

Damien Berry, Mike James, Lamar Miller, Storm Johnson, Eduardo Clements.

Ok, that's NOT a question!

But what the HELL was Whipple thinking?

And what will new Miami Offensive Coordinator "Seattle Fisch Market" do with this talent?

Justin_WVUM

As for OL, I don't know of any scoops but I'd love to bring back Art Kehoe. The great O-line coach back in the day when the Miami o-line was beastly.

Arthur Brown was a product of Kansas football and not South Florida football. A two star in Dade is like a five star in Kansas. Arthur simply didn't know the plays and had no technique. Had great physical tools but nothing between the ears.

Justin_WVUM

I find it weird Fisch got hired. First off let's all be glad Seattle lost because by rule while he was on the Seattle staff he couldn't talk to recruits so it is better they lost.

Whipple may have been a product of the "Patrick Nix Effect." Last year anything was better than P-Nix so everyone jumped on his bandwagon. But then Whipple got exposed. I mean why not run the wildcat with Kendal Thompkins? Kid is so shifty and when I talk to defensive players they say he's the toughest to tackle.

Fisch didn't have gaudy numbers with Minnesota in 2009 and HE NEVER HAS MET AL GOLDEN BEFORE!!! That's odd. He's younger so maybe he can communitate with the players better. Whipple was old. 58 I believe.

86Cane

We heard from several reliable sources that the players around campus were, well to put it mildly, were LAZY.

Without naming names, is that what U saw? Are there any players that have the "Eye of the Tiger"?

Old Skool

Beyond more enthusiasm, what do the players expect to get from Golden that they didn't get from Randy?

86Cane

M I D D L E
L I N E
B A C K E R

What the heck will we do there?

Justin_WVUM

I think discipline and football IQ is something that Golden is going to preach. Randy was more of a father figure Golden is more about execution on gamedays.

You could definitely tell there are players that gave it their all like Sean Spence, Matt Bosher, Patrick Hill, Brandon Harris but there is a lot of dead weight on this team.

I think a lot of players took for playing at Miami for granted. It's a privledge, not a right.

I would go on the field before gamedays since I had a field pass and would see players talking to family members during warmups and looking around at the crowd to check the atmosphere. Focus wasn't always there.

Justin_WVUM

MLB is a huge question mark. Kelvin Cain is the immediate answer right now. Cain started the game McCarthy missed against Duke and played nicely for a youngster.

I expect Jordan Futch to move back to linebacker since Miami just got Ayers, the USC transfer.

86Cane

U said in your article that U were MORE interested in what the new coaching staff did with the current players than in recruiting.

Name four players, 2 on offense and 2 on defense that you think could excell under Golden and company?

Old Skool

Are you surprised no scholarships have been rescinded or no one has left the team other than Latwan?

Also what are your impressions of Wieclaw and Hopfinger?

86Cane

Is Susan Miller-Degnan really that annoying and unattractive or what? OK, don't answer that!

What do you think about Kirby Hocutt? Some here (not me) criricized him for losing Gruden and hiring Golden?

Justin_WVUM

Offense: Kendal Thompkins and Tommy Streeter. Let's face it, Aldarius Johnson is a lost cause. Talking to people around the program they tell me he just doesn't hustle and try. Kendal contemplated transferring after the 2009 season but stayed true to the orange and green. He needed a new coach to give him a new look and chance. And Tommy Streeter, all the guy does is make big plays in bowl games. He had the 47 yard catch vs. Wisc and the 35 yard TD catch vs. ND.

Defense: Jamal Reid and Adewale Ojomo. Reid is really talented and in fact wanted to play baseball and football but Shannon said no because fall ball conflicted with football. Apparently grades were an issue with him but Golden will give him a fresh canvas to work with. And Ojomo is so physically talented. He was the only player that admitted to me that chemistry was not as good as advertised under Shannon as others let on to be. He'll be the leader on the d-line next year and register double digit sacks.

AlpharettaCane

Justin: did any of the local media covering the 'Canes ever call RS out? Anyone actually stand up to him, or would that be like biting the hand that feeds you (in this case, biting the hand that doesn't feed you)

Justin_WVUM

I am surprised no one has left the program yet besides Latwan. Maybe they are waiting for Shannon to get a job and follow Randy? just food for thought.

Susan Miller Degnan is a great writer but the method to ger madness is odd to say the least.

Wieclaw can only kick off and hit field goals. He cannot punt. Leg strength is a problem with Jake, not accuracy. Don't know much about Blake. I suspect just a reserve

AlpharettaCane

Soup / anyone: was Wesley a senior this past year?

I'm too lazy to look it up. If not, would like to see him come back, would add some nice depth to the d-line.

That is, if whatever he did to land in the dog house wasn't too serious

Justin_WVUM

No one ever called Randy out but behind closed doors the media was not happy with him. Inside The U and Canesport didn't like Randy and neither did I.

The thing Randy failed to realize was that being nice to the media sometimes gets you the benefit of the doubt if things go wrong. After all, the media is the bridge that connects the UM program to the fans.

Justin_WVUM

Steven Wesley was a senior so doesn't have anymore years of college left. Wesley was a product of not balancing scholarships properly. Once Miami got committments from Latwan and Seantrel real late, Collier and Wesley were axed because there was depth at both those positions. Academics were a problem with Thearon and in fact he has left the USC football program. Wesley was on Outside the Lines on ESPN last month bashing Shannon for cutting him.

86Cane

The thing Randy failed to realize was that being nice to the media sometimes gets you the benefit of the doubt if things go wrong. After all, the media is the bridge that connects the UM program to the fans.

There IT is right there!

AlpharettaCane

I thought there was a move by the administration last year to improve media relations, outreach, etc.

Guess that didn't go very far.

OK, thanks for the answer. So, on the flip side, was there any media that Randy DID take to? I know Sid Rosenburg wouldn't be on the top of the list.

Anyone who he favored?

Actually, that's a dumb question. Sctach that.

Here's one: did you ever see RS and Whipple ever have a conversation?

Justin_WVUM

These are great questions! You all are really passionate and thorough! Follow me on twitter @JAntweil

solarcane

Aldarius Johnson is a lost cause. Talking to people around the program they tell me he just doesn't hustle and try.

Thats gonna leave a mark.

Justin I'm just sittin back watching you field questions , I enjoy your no BS style.

86Cane

I can't sleep at night thinking about the Maimi secondary. D'Onofrio has his work cut out for him! Do we have anyone who can play CB or Safety for UM in 2011?

Justin_WVUM

To be fair, UM media relations has been a lot better this year in terms of posting content. They tweet often and post video interviews for the fans but in terms of making Randy better publicly, nothing could change that.

I never saw Randy and Whipp talk to each other. Only scream hahah

86Cane

Solar...I let it slide with Justin, but since U HAD to repeat it, don't make me come over there!

AlpharettaCane

Solar: was thinking the same thing. He must be a young guy....lots of candor and straight-talk. :)

Wonder if its fair to say the media didn't give RS a pass as well...can you imagine how he would've done with the NY media, or media who would've called out that the king didn't have any clothes on?

Justin_WVUM

I am petrified at the CB/Secondary as well. Is Lee Chambers seriously the answer??????? Alphonso Highsmith???????? Kacy Rodgers? Davanta Davis???? Brandon McGee is the only player with any experience.

It's a major concern heading into 2011, I agree with you 86Cane and I don't have a lot of optimism either.

Justin...OK here we go: Name ONE offensive player and ONE defnesive player as your "Legends of the Fall" for 2011?

Which 2 players will have break out seasons that nobody saw coming?

AlpharettaCane

Justin: what do you believe are fair expectations for this team next year?

Slight improvement? Division title? A Top 20 ranking?

It'll take time for Golden's system to take, and for Jacory to decipher Fisch (hopefully), but given talent on team, what are realistic expectations for fans re 2011 season?

86Cane

What can we say soup, your guy can't run and my guy can't read.

Geez...what a sad, if not funny, story.

Justin_WVUM

Offense: Storm Johnson....I've been barking for him to get some touches and may be Fisch will get the message.

Defense: Vaughn Telemque.....He made strides this past year and finally got his technique down. It will all come together this year.

Honorable mention....Maurice Hagans. He is a better fullback than people think.

AlpharettaCane

Solar - trust you and Soup are talking about the NW connection....

solarcane

Alph,
You are right. Looking back Randy was given way too much leniency on everything because he was a life long Cane.
He would have been eaten alive trying to rebuild a team anywhere but in his own neighborhood.

U are welcome to keep it going as long as U want or we can do this again in a couple of weeks AFTER recruiting has ended.

Any insider tips on recruiting BTW?

Justin_WVUM

Left to right: Seantrel, Linder, Horn, Bwash, Jermaine Johnson

I'd get Gunn out of the rotation, I love Linder.

Haven't heard about O-line coach but hopefully Art Kehoe

Best athletic performer at Miami
Riquna Williams

ACC player of the week for the THIRD time this season!

Jan. 17, 2011

GREENSBORO, N.C. - University of Miami junior guard Riquna Williams has unanimously earned this week's Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week honor as announced by the conference office on Monday - the third time this season she has earned the weekly accolade.

The honor is the fifth in Williams' career after winning the award on Dec. 13, Dec. 27 and twice as a sophomore. The Pahokee, Fla. native scored a then season-high 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting in Miami's ACC home-opening 77-48 victory at Clemson on Jan. 14. The 29-point margin of victory was the largest ever in a conference game since Miami joined the ACC in 2004.

Against Boston College on Sunday, Williams went off for 21 points in the second half on her way to a new season-high of 33 points in the impressive 65-53 win. In both the Clemson and Boston College contests, Williams reached season-highs with 11 made field goals and six three-pointers.

Williams currently leads the ACC in scoring at 20.9 points per game and in four conference games so far, the explosive guard is averaging 26.3 points per contest.

With her five weekly awards, Williams surpasses Boston College's Carolyn Swords for the most ACC Player of the Week awards among active players. Her unanimous selection is a first this season.

The ACC's weekly accolades are voted on by the league's "Blue Ribbon Panel," which consists of national and local media members, as well as school representatives. The panelists will also vote on the league's postseason All-Conference teams for the 2010-11 season.

Miami is 4-0 in conference play for the first time in the ACC and 18-1 on the year - tied for the best start to a season after 19 games in program history.

The Hurricanes will return to the hardwood when they face No. 21 Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla. on Monday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. The `Canes current 17-game win streak is tied with No. 3 Duke for the nation's longest.

Read in to see what Drew and Jenkins are saying about the U.

Since the report is from a Georgia local paper, i would think they'd be a lil bit more honest about it.

I've read several reports saying different things.

Some positive, some not so sure.

Drew rated the visit a 7 out of 10, and Jenkins an 8 according to canesport, insidetheu is reporting that they both got blown away by their visit.

Wether it's for a free trip or they were really serious about Miami is your call.

UGA targets Drew, Jenkins bond in Miami, talk about playing together

January 17, 2011, by Chip Towers

The duo hit it off in Miami this past weekend. Drew, a five-star defensive end from Thomas County Central, and Jenkins, a 6-4, 340-pound noseguard at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, both just happened to be on official visits at the University of Miami this weekend.

Don’t count out Miami as a possible destination. He said he was “blown away” by the Hurricanes on his visit.

“It was beautiful,” he said. “The hotel I was in had this big balcony. So when I woke up in the morning, I looked to right and there was the ocean, I looked to my left and there was the city and straight ahead was South Beach. Pretty nice.”

He was also impressed with new coach Al Golden. “He seems like a very driven, high-energy guy,” Drew said. “He wants to get Miami back to where they used to be.”

I asked Drew about his sudden interest in Miami, which he previously had not listed among his finalists.

“Miami has always been a school that I’ve looked at; I just never really said anything about it,” said the 6-foot-5, 250-pound U.S. Army All-American. “It’s been in the process for a while. The majority of my father’s family lives in the Miami area, so it’s a place where I feel like I could feel at home.”

Drew now has taken official visits to Auburn, Georgia, LSU and Miami. He has an official visit planned for Clemson this weekend. It’s his fifth and final official.

Even if Drew does know where he’s going to sign, he said he’s not about to announce it anytime soon.

“If not signing day then a few days before,” he said.

“it was a cool weekend,” he said. “I got to meet the coaches and got a chance to see what they had in mind in terms of a plan for me. And I had a chance to see the city, which was great. The weather was beautiful.”

Thanks Sean Spence is a beast!!!

Kevin Grooms

Hollywood South Broward running back Kevin Grooms, one of the best all-around football players in the state, committed to the University of Miami on Monday morning during an in-home visit from Hurricanes coach Al Golden.

Grooms, considered the 83rd best recruit in the country regardless of position by ESPN, rushed for 1,363 yards and 20 touchdowns last season and returned six punts for touchdowns.

He is considered the second-best recruit in Miami’s class by ESPN, right behind Tampa Alonso defensive end Anthony Chickillo, considered the 82nd best player in the country.

Kevin Grooms

Grooms, an All-Broward County Selection by the Sun-Sentinel, is one of the county's fastest and elusive backs. He ran for more than 1,350 yards and scored 27 touchdowns as a senior in helping South Broward reach the Class 5A playoffs. He also returned kicks -- he had seven punt returns for touchdowns -- and played defensive back. He led Broward County in scoring.

"Kevin has great field vision and his speed is incredible," Held said Grooms, who is also South Broward's point guard on the basketball team. "He can cut on a dime and just makes people miss."
