On Sunday we posted the University of Miami's top 15 recruits of 2011 as selected by Twitter guru "SaveUMFootball" (Papa Cane).
But with all due respect we have some differences with his rankings. So today we are posting the Canespace rankings of the 2011 recruits.
Here is our list and a few comments about each player:
#15: DT Corey King:A wide-bodied (6-1, 270) space eater who will be called on to provide depth along the DL behind expected starters Forston and Regis. King is also living a dream. This class of 2011 prospect had committed to FIU a week before national signing day, but the Panthers had to back off because King needed to receive a qualifying score on his ACT. He took the test again and scored an 18 which was good enough to get an offer from the Miami Hurricanes, his dream school since the sixth grade. Put that in your pipe and smoke it Super Mario!
#14: DE Olsen Pierre:An New Jersey native who became the first recruit ever signed by Golden at UM. He is an early enrollee who was recruited by Golden while he was still at Temple. Pierre found his way to Coral Gables this Spring where he has managed to get himself acclimated to his new coaches, teammates and surroundings. In spite of his head start on the rest of his 2011 classmates we think Pierre may redshirt this season due to the solid depth at DE at UM in 2011.
#13: ATH/LB Eddie Johnson: A three star recruit who played his high school football in Alabama and Georgia. Played both RB and LB in high school. Another candidate for the MLB spot even though it has been rumored that Golden may give him a shot at RB. He will likely redshirt this season.
#12: LB Antonio Kinard: Another three star prospect from Ohio who arrived at UM by way of Hargrave Military Academy. This big boy (6-3, 215) is a tackling machine that runs a 4.6 40 yard dash. Will provide much needed depth at LB for Miami in 2011.
#11: DE/LB Ricardo Williams:A local talent and versatile player who was the all-time sack leader at UM LB coach Michael Barrow's high school: Homestead in South Dade. Williams fits the 3-4 scheme that D'Onofio and Golden are rumored to want to implement at least on a part-time basis at UM. He gave a strong "Butch" slap to North Carolina head coach Butch Davis when he chose Miami over ACC rival UNC. We like that!
#10: WR Rashawn Scott: Another early enrollee at Miami who in our opinion will turn out to be the "sleeper" of this class. Big, tall WR with excellent hands who we strongly believe will impress beyond many fans' expectations. Somebody write that down, OK? No seriously, write it down!
#9: OL Taylor Gadbois:What's a kid with a hockey name like this doing playing football in Georgia? Well we like his name and we love the impressive size of this big, burly Peach State product. We are counting on Swasey and Kehoe to turn this physical offensive lineman into a road grader. The Canes are solid along the OL so a red shirt is likely in 2011 for this North of the (Florida) border player.
#8 WR Phillip Dorsett:This St. Thomas Aquinas product was another huge "get" for the Miami this year. Some say that Dorsett reminds them of Roscoe Parrish. I say he reminds me of former Hurricane Reggie Wayne. Dorsett has great hands, excellent technique and above average speed to go along with those gifts. Suddenly, with Miami's WR depth now in question Dorsett could see some playing time this season.
#7: DB/S Dallas Crawford: Not quite as as fast as Grooms but has excellent footwork, is very quick in and out of breaks and has excellent cover skills. Will be looked at to provide depth at the glaringly thin and unsettled CB spot for Miami in 2011. Will be counted on to push the starters and either Crawford or converted RB Eduardo Clements may even work their way into a starting role by the end of the season if one of the upperclassmen (Chambers, McGee, etc.) falters or stumbles.
#6: DT/DE Jalen Grimble:A five-star signing day steal for Golden, Carroll and company. Two words: Unlimited Potential. Some think he will get some playing time this season and may even be the he next Warren Sapp. I think he has an excellent chance to be a great player for the Hurricanes but am not ready to anoint him the next anything until I see him make a spectacular play while wearing "The U" on his helmet. We will all be eagerly watching his progress this Fall as he bulks up under Swasey and gets coached up under D'Onofrio.
#5: LB Gionni Paul:OK, OK I know what you are probably thinking: "That is way to high a ranking for this player!" My response is: "Wanna bet?" Another one of the early enrollees for 2011 who has UM defensive coaches openly admitting that they have a man crush on and are salivating over. Insiders that have seen him at practice tell me that he is not only among the fastest and most athletic LBs in this class but also that they have see in Coral Gables in severalyears. It will be hard to keep him off of the field at WLB and we predict that he will play early and often in 2011.
#4: RB/PR/KR Kevin Grooms: If speed kills then Kevin Grooms is a lethal weapon. We think that Grooms plays this year primarily on special teams as a kick off or punt returner. He is a game breaker and a difference-maker type of talent that is as elusive as he is fast. Blink and you will miss him. We think opposing defenses will blink.
#3: DB Thomas Finnie: An early enrollee at UM from Miami Central HS that was headed out of town to attend college before Golden re-programmed and changed the trajectory on this Rocket. Everyone has to love a player that Golden recently claimed was "The hardest working Hurricane." We like that, yeah we like that a LOT! That and the fact that he plays CB, a position at UM that needs all of the "hard workers" it can find in 2011.
#2: LB Denzel Perryman:This Coral Gables high product will wear #52 at Miami but reminds me of a player who wore #51 at The U: Jonathan Vilma. Either way many insiders believe that he will become the type of impact player at MLB that the Canes have been searching for over the last several years. I look forward to seeing #52 live up to the number he will wear and give me several reasons to agree with those "in the know", and soon!
#1 DE Anthony Chickillo:What else can we say about 3G that hasn't already been said? Beyond his obvious talent on the field he appears to have many of the intangibles to also be a leader in the locker room. Even if he plays up to only half of the hype he received coming out of HS Hurricane fans will be in for a treat watching "Chick" wreak havoc in opposing team's backfields for the next few years. Chickillo is the surest bet of any of the players in this class to play early and often in 2011 and be a starter in 2012.
Then I find out they are
Notre Dame, Notre Dame Indiana 46556
What the hell...they think they are the Vatican?
Posted by: solarcane | June 22, 2011 at 02:14 PM
It's worse than that. The Vatican, at least, is the vestiges of Catholic Rome. Y'know: ROME. Even if Catholicism is lost on you, there's at least some sense that you're somewhere near things happening.
Notre Dame, on the other hand, is an exurb of South Bend, IN. Which is less important, e.g., than being an exurb of Terre Haute.
It's a miracle they were ever able to recruit athletes who could spell their own names.

solar - I've never watched that Tosh show but I've heard people talk about it - the best is when he gets those stupid ass white glasses knocked off his face haha
That wiffle kid is sick, I came across his video a while back when a guy at work was trying to learn how to throw some nastiness for when we play in the studio ... he almost tore his elbow out trying to do some of that stuff baaahaha, it was great. I don't see how that kid's arm is still intact after throwing like that - his elbow is gonna be jacked up in the future when he gets older, like in his 30s
Here's that kid's original video - the best pitches are at :58 seconds in with that fat lard up at the plate

I find it laughable that we honestly think this 7 year, mediocre team is going to land, what you call "the big fish". Kids stop knocking on our door to come here and win 'ships 5 years ago.
We all thought we were back with the #1 class and that got us no where.
How about we trust our new coaching staff, eat a fat price of humble pie, stop watching our 'ships on VHS and stop comparing players to past greats.
We are exactly who we think we are. We ain't done shit in the weakest conference out of all CFB.
We need kids that are hungry and don't have all these people calling them great and all that. We need workers. Kids that know they have to earn it.
Some of y'all praise BH1. I don't. The kid said he's coming to win 'ships, but jumped ship as soon as he could to a locked out profession. That WR for ND made him look high school.
We need kids that aren't here for themselves, but are here to work and EARN it.
Look what Bush did to USC. Look what TP2 did to OSU. Look at what a few studs did to UNC.

solar - one more vid
I dunno about this, 97 MPH with a wiffle ball? The last pitch that registers on that gun just doesn't seem like 97 MPH
The pitch he throws at :14 - :16 seconds in that is supposedly 91 MPH is the nastiest pitch in the whole video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzcWRXCxOpo&feature=related
But 97? Something has to be off - he's also not throwing from 60 ft 6 inches, an official wiffle ball mound is 42 feet exactly from home plate, these guys are releasing the ball from about 38 to 37 feet away
Little League mound is 46 feet and the hardest throwers in the LLWS this past year were topping out at 72 MPH or 73 MPH = 93 MPH from MLB distance ... but those kids are like 11 years old
I guess it might be possible to hit 97 MPH with a wiffle ball from 38 feet away
I mean, look at this kid though, hitting 95-97 MPH from 60 ft. 6 inches - and you barely even have time to track the ball from his hand before you hear the snap of the catcher's mitt

Yeah Canerock, we layed on the porch last year against those bums. That was probably the most uninspired game I've seen the Canes play. They must of really be pissed at Shannon that night.

Six I'm sure you can mess with the readouts on those radar guns. Those guys probably have it reading a percentage higher than an accurate reading is.
Don't the major league home teams up the speed on the scoreboard for their pitchers to rattle the other team? I would.

See, I'd be more on board with your suspicions if Butch hadn't gone 5-6 in '97, in other words, he had the season the NCAA sanctions were designed to make him have in the first place. There were no assistant coaches as shady as, "renowned all-star recruiter," John Blake at UM under Butch. There just wasn't moonbat and if there was just an inking of smoke, you don't think the program would have been death penal-tied in a second without batting an NCAA eyelash? The nation was hoping for that the entire time, it would have been everybody's birthday/xmas/new years present who followed college football all rolled into one if they could pin the smallest infraction in the probation years on us to finally drop the blade.

Scavo Named Head Football Athletic Trainer
Longtime medical professional comes to UM athletics from Miami's Miller School of Medicine
Vincent "Vinny" Scavo will join the University of Miami's athletic training staff as it's Associate Athletic Trainer and Head Football Athletic Trainer, announced UM's Head Athletic Trainer Scott McGonagle on Wednesday.
Scavo joins the Hurricanes athletic department after working as the Director of Sports Medicine Services and Head Athletic Trainer at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine since 2008. With the division serving as the official sports medicine provider for the Hurricanes, Scavo has already worked closely with the team doctors and student-athletes - relationships that will continue in his new capacity.
"We are looking forward to having Vinny join the athletic training department," said McGonagle. "He brings with Him a history of championship success during his previous time here, and we hope this be the case again."
Scavo has extensive experience as an athletic trainer at the professional, college and high school levels, previously serving as Miami's basebasll athletic trainer from 1984-87, including during the Hurricanes' 1985 national championship season.
Scavo worked with both the New York Yankees (1981-83) and Florida Marlins (1992-96) organizations, earning Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year honors by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainer Society and Florida State League Class A Baseball Athletic Trainer of the Year in 1994.
After two years as the Rehabilitation Coordinator for the Marlins' minor and major league teams (1994-1996), He was named Director of Sports Medicine at Doctors Hospital and then served as the Head Athletic Trainer at several South Florida high schools for 13 years, working at Miami Southridge (1996-2001), Chaminade-Madonna (2001-06) and Coral Gables (2006-2008). Over that time, he developed the curriculum for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools' Coaches Certification Course and the MDCPS Injury Reporting System. In 2006, Scavo was named Florida's High School Trainer of the Year.
Originally from Staten Island, N.Y., Scavo is a 1983 graduate of Florida State with a bachelor's in education. He is certified from the National Athletic Trainers' and is a licensed athletic trainer.

They are stories of perseverance. Stories about growing up, becoming men and being a part of a family. One-by-one, we hear from them. These are the Miami Hurricanes...
Protecting the quarterback is a big thing. It’s what you work out for; it’s what you do everything for. Going over the plays, practicing, it’s what it’s all about. It’s something you should enjoy doing, because that’s you guy back there.
I hold myself to such a high level, that even when I make a good play, if I don’t think it’s a good enough play for me, I get upset at myself. I critique the littlest things, so I’m disappointed with myself even after some good plays.
Competition is what fuels you. If you have no competition, you might start slacking. Competition keeps you on your game. It makes you do the extra stuff you need to do.
When I was six years old I played baseball, but when I moved down here it was just football. I was about seven years old when I started playing football.
St. Thomas Aquinas is a great school. I played little league when I first moved down here, and one of my dad’s friend’s older brothers went to St. Thomas, so my first year down here, me and my dad went with him and his dad to a game. I remember watching Sam Young and a bunch of other guys play, thinking how big they were, and then I went to school there and became one of them. I go back there in the spring just to say hello to everyone. It’s a great place with a lot of opportunity.
I remember when Coach Golden was hired. We were sitting at the awards banquet when Kirby Hocutt came in and told us it was Al Golden. We didn’t really know who he was. I remember the first meeting with him; the guy said what we needed to do and what was going to happen. Everything’s changed, from the workouts, to the eating, to the grades and study hall. There’s a lot more accountability in all the little things, and I think that’s going to take us far.
I didn't think it was a difficult transition at all. Everything was starting over, so we were all on the same playing field and level. You just have to start listening to what’s new and what you have to do and forget about all the old stuff.
We are all a team, especially here on the offensive line Me, Shane (McDermott) and Mongo (Jonathan Feliciano) got a house now and everyone’s over there all the time. The line is definitely coming together. We have cookouts, we got an inflatable pool, and it’s a lot of fun.
You go through camp with these guys, you go through everything with these guys, and you become brothers. Especially classmates, you pull toward each other because you’re going through the same thing together starting off new. I, Shane, Jonathan, Jermaine Barton, Seantrel Henderson, and Malcolm Bunche, we all went through the same thing at the same time, and you do it all together. We’d do anything for each other.
My hobbies are fishing and hunting. That’s my life, I grew up doing it. I grew up in the woods and in the water. My dad introduced me to it when I was really young. If the world ends, I can still survive (laughs). For me, it’s a way to clear my head. I’ve been going to the Keys every weekend, fishing, diving and all that. I catch everything from dolphin, tuna, Wahoo to spear shooting snapper and grouper. It’s not lobster season right now, but in August it will be. I have my own underwater camera, so I make my own movies while fishing. Over spring break, I went to Shane’s house and we went fishing on his boat, with his dad. About three weeks ago, we went out to Isla Morada Humps down in the Keys. It’s about 300 feet of water, and we caught an 85-pound amberjack that took 45 minutes to fight.
I’ll never forget my coaches at St. Thomas. Two of the big ones are Coach Smith and Coach Connolly, the line coach. The things they’ve done for me, the opportunities they’ve given me. That’s why I am where I am right now.
Art Kehoe is a great guy. When Coach Stoutland left, we didn’t know who was going to come in. Coach Kehoe came in, and he’s such a fiery guy, a great teacher. He’s such a great guy, he’s always on top of us with our schoolwork and study hall, and he’s a lot of fun.
This season is going to be a big one for me and the team. With the new coaching change, we’re going in there trying to prove everyone wrong with everything they’ve said. I’m excited to see the hard work we’ve been doing and how it’s going to pay off. I’m excited.
My family means the world to me. I always knew I was coming here, but one of the reasons I picked Miami was being close to my family. I go home every weekend, and once or twice during the week too. Especially during football season and during camp, you’re grinding the whole week and you need to recharge your batteries and kind of get away. What better place than with family? I’ve got a bunch of friends at different places, and a lot of them are miserable that they can’t come home all the time, so I don’t take it for granted.
I was raised right. My mom and dad instilled great habits in me, good morals. I think it goes back to the hunting and fishing too, when you do all that kind of stuff, it helps to make you humble. Through the whole recruiting process, I didn’t talk to anyone, never answered my phone for the media. I was doing my own thing. I was raised humble, and to never showboat or anything like that.
I always want to be a good person, and a hard-worker, being out there before and after everyone else. Someone you can count on. A great family man. That’s the legacy I want.
Tradition is the reason I came here to the U. I grew up watching them and going to games, with guys like Michael Irvin coming to talk to you, with Willis McGahee running ladders with you at practice, Reggie Wayne working out with us, who else has that? It’s a blue-collar, hard-working factory, and that’s what I love about it. That’s me.
Playing football has given me a great opportunity. I started playing when I moved from Orlando in 1999, and I played every year since. I always had to play with older kids because I was heavier. After my freshman spring in high school, I started getting looks from colleges and thought I could do something. It just blew up after that, and I was able to come to Miami.

"I always want to be a good person, and a hard-worker, being out there before and after everyone else. Someone you can count on.

I think it goes back to the hunting and fishing too, when you do all that kind of stuff, it helps to make you humble."
I'm just sayin

Solar
Make-up, lighting, art direction and color correction can do wonders.
I'm sure you've heard stories about beautiful models without make-up.
Lighting's a given: the first one is soft flat daylight which is bluish in color and can make the skin look cold.
Art direction: Want to make blue eyes stand out? Blue in the background will do it. Plus with color correction I can correct for skin tone and even blue up the eyes a bit more.
I know ... long answer to a short question.

Solar I know you do not like UNC but I just watched that story about coach Fox's mom passing away from breast cancer...oh my Nick and I both looked at each other and said "I hope they win it all". He could not be there for regionals because he was by his Mom's side while she was dying until she passed. The boys all said they stepped up and took on leadership roles they otherwise would not have....just tore at my heart.

I don't think it's gonna happen though.

I think that if Grooms gets moved to wideout, he could be a real prollum' out there.

>>>>He went to JC to get the grades up...so did Delmar Taylor. Both are still being looked at by the CANES.

2 players I think that will have a chance to shine like all freshman they have to come in and compete but these spots need the most help.T homas Finnie, Came in and worked his tail off to get the starting job with the UTough program and slipped to 2nd string but can he come in and out work Payne,McGee and Chambers yes! Hardest worked by the Head Coach..Denzel Perryman, with MLB being a weak link for the Canes( i know right) he has a chance. I like #58, but Denzel needs the chance to shine. If he comes in with the attitude that Ray,Sean and Jon came in with.."i will start" than he will lead us for years. Im excited for this season..

I think that if Grooms gets moved to wideout, he could be a real prollum' out there.

Many "insiders" are VERY curious about how Golden will use Grooms. They can't wait to see how creative Golden and Company get with him. Time will tell...

canechic - the #1 coach I want is George Horton
If I can't have Horton, then I'll take Pat Murphy as a very close #1A... he's now the manager for the Eugene Emeralds, a short-season A team for the Padres
It would be interesting to see how Horton would be able to recruit for Miami - but I'll bet he'd do a better job than what is going on now
And Murph, he went to FAU, got both his Bachelor/Master there, was named to their 20th Anniversary Team ... he knows the area
The crap he was fired for at Arizona State was exactly that - crap
One of the "major" violations they cited - team managers (instead of coaches) throwing batting practices, signaling in pitches and tossing balls during practices and warm-ups before games ... wow ... how they didn't get thrown into prison for that, I have no idea
Another violation - Student athletes received free-of-charge services from two Tempe sports-training facilities .... (I wonder if Hankie paid Mark Duper to help him or not this past off-season)
Another violation - coaches making 500 total telephone recruiting calls in 5 years
This is actually something I think is stupid though and shouldn't have happened (but it does anyway, all the time in football and basketball) - student athletes getting paid for work they didn't do in youth camps to help introduce kids to baseball
Pffft ... I'll still take Murph. If that's considered some baggage, then that's really only carry-on, compared to the factory outlet center of baggage that other schools like USC, Ohio State, UNC, etc. have
