Here is our Hurricanes Watch report for this week with some random facts...
Kickin' It: One of the pleasant surprises of Fall training camp has been the positive play of the new Hurricane kicking crew at both punter and place kicker. The emergence of Freshman kicker Matt Goudis and junior college transfer punter Dalton Botts have been reassuring to UM coaches and fans as they look for a replacement for the talented and tough Matt Bosher who graduated and is currently playing for the Atlanta Falcons in the NFLU.
How Bizarre, How Bizarre: Although only a tropical storm at the current time, Irene is projected to strengthen into a hurricane, head towards South Florida and possibly make landfall in the greater Miami area sometime early Friday morning. Talk about ironic, just how bizarre would it be for a weather hurricane to impact the Miami Hurricanes given the recent storm of NCAA controversy blowing around Coral Gables over the last week? Miami fans are holding on to hope that the NCAA investigation does not prove as devastating to the University as Hurricane Andrew was to southern Dade County back in August of 1992. I guess it really is time for Hurricane fans to stand united and hunker down in the 305.
Practice Makes Perfect: On Saturday the Hurricanes held their final practice of fall camp that included a special teams session and field goal competition between Goudis and Wieclaw. The mano-a-mano matchup of kickers who each were drafted to represent the orange or white teams turned out to be a draw. But the really good news is that both players made all 5 of the 5 kicks attempted in spite of the whooping and hollering of attempted intimidation by the opposing team's players. The only question now is can either one tackle as well as Matt Bosher or look as cool as OcalaCane in his Canespace ST#26 T-shirt? Yeah, you are right, probably NOT on both accounts.
Special Teams: Watch out for DB Andrew Swasey on special teams this season. We were told that he has already blocked two FG attempts in practice and plans to make his presence felt, literally, on special teams this season. We hope Swasey can learn to channel his inner Tremaine Mack while returners Travis Benjamin and Lamar Miller channel their inner Devin Hester and return the UM special teams to truly being "special" once again.
Special Forces: Speaking of things that are "special" we would like to give a shout out to Canespacers who are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces: CaneSniper, IraqiCane and CanesSince1982 are all protecting our freedom and keeping us safe here at home. All of us at Canespace would like to take this opportunity to thank U for your service to our Country.
Still Life At Sun Life: On Friday night I had the chance to visit the familiar stomping grounds of Sun Life Stadium just to make sure football is still being played there. The Miami Dolphins played surprisingly well in beating the Carolina Panthers 20-10 in their first home appearance of the NFLU pre-season. The 'Fins Chad Henne actually looked like a pro QB for once and the Dolphins defense stifled rookie QB Cam Newton who started for the Panthers and led his team on five drives which resulted in four punts and zero points while proving that the NFLU is not the same as the NCAA.
Second scrimmage set for Monday: The UM players will not practice on Sunday in an effort to give their tired bodies a rest before the final scrimmage on Monday. Hurricane head coach Al Golden has stated in several interviews that the depth chart will be released soon after Monday's scrimmage, probably on Tuesday or Wednesday. With only 60 players slated to make the travel roster there are still several heated position battles and plenty to play for in the second and final scrimmage of the Fall.
Let The Festivities Begin: The 2011 BankUnited CanesFest is going back to its roots and will be better than ever when it returns to the University of Miami's campus on Saturday, Aug. 27. The event, which will run from 3-6 p.m., will be held inside the BankUnited Center and the adjacent Field House. The event is free and open to all Canes fans, yes that even includes Canechic (seen below).
We will keep watching the Hurricanes, you just keep paying attention, deal?

30 on 30 currently on ESPNU.
My favorite scene is Schnellenberger's wife celebrating the first NC in a full-length white mink coat, downtown Miami during ticker tape parade.
Must've been hot as hell!

Went to my local Publix in my Hurricanes shirt and it was not pleasant, as I do live in Nole and Gator country. I wish I had a shirt that said "yes I am. Hurricane Fan, got a problem with that, see my husband! LOL!

Alpharetta I think it was cold that day! She was a huge Cane fan!
She was not happy at all when he left the U. She is a south Florida girl!

CC: she looked like she was having a great time, and seemed like the perfect side-kick for Schnelly. 10,000 watt smile.

I do the same thing out here- canechic- I just have to deal with Pac 12 fans.

Well, 'Nole and Gator country is unpleasant no matter what shirt you wear.
I got my Master's degree in Gainesville, and I can say without fear of controversy that the Gator fan is either the worst species of fan in existence, or second to the Buckeye fan.

I'm starting to wonder if college football will someday start losing the benefit of its fans, too. Is it just me or are you, too, starting to feel guilty and dirty rooting for a sport where seemingly everybody is cheating in some form or fashion? Isn't it hard to clap your hands for your favorite team when you have to hold your nose at the same time?
Sometimes, you wonder if you are as hypocritical as the sport itself. I mean, we like to act like we care about what is just and right, but do we really? If we did, would we still be packing the stadiums to watch the 100-yard lie?

I got the impression from the 30 on 30 movie that Schnellenberger had no intention of leaving South Florida. He just thought (wrongly) that the USFL had a chance, and bought into the South Florida USFL franchise.
It's interesting to ponder what might have been if he had been Miami's Bobby Bowden. It's tough to imagine we would have had more championships, but perhaps the swings between awesome and terrible wouldn't have been so severe.

I was thinking about that this morning, too. If UM has a deep probation scenario, I don't know if I'm willing to stick with it through those years like I did through the Butch years.
I used to prefer college ball over pro pretty strongly because the players seemed so much more genuinely passionate. But now, I'm just starting to think the whole NCAA football thing is a sham.
I still don't know if I can embrace pro football. Maybe my weekends will be completely free from now on.

Excellent post Hillview
Solar. That's a serious set-up.
Now you think that's a pain ... Imagine claymation, where you're not only moving arms and legs, but eyes, mouths, hands, fingers and all in this substance that picks up fingerprints, creases and scratches very easily. There are guys that spend years doing that stuff.
On a technical note, if the incandescents get too hot to work around. You can invest in some LCD lights or a compact flourescents, although the color of the light will differ.

cc thats my point exactly. For what he did to those innocent people that ruined their lives he should've been given the death penalty and shouldn't have even been allowed to try to give the U the death penalty. Another thing, if he was smart enough to take money from smart rich investors then I'm sure he was smart enough to con college kids into taking money from him. Maybe he tried to give kids gifts or money and they refused until he told them a lie to get them to take it. Not that I believe that he con'd the kids or anything happened at all but who knows what happened is my point. Our case is totally different from all the other school cases because all the information is coming from a guy that built his life on lies. I run a youth basketball program with 5 teams and I can't remember everything that went on this year let alone the last 10yrs. How can anyone remember everything he did with each player over the last 10yrs?

thanks skool
I have some fluorescents I switch back and forth
also tape white paper over the incandescents to defuse it a little.
I'm brand new at this but its hella fun!
I'll be getting your opinions as I get something with enough frames to really watch
Just getting guys to walk around at 15 frames per second takes awhile.

Willie will sleaze is sleaze and a little wacky, he could have been keeping a diary for just this occasion who knows? Something happened with players or Randy would never have been so adamant about everyone staying away. Now what the NCAA decides to do...who knows?
The key is how involved were the adults that is where the trouble is....OSU got in trouble more for the cover up than for what the guys actually did. So we wait.

Wonder of there will be any doubt cast on the "source" of all of these allegations...
That's the problem... the media LOVE this story, and NO ONE has done their due diligence for accurate info.

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- Former Hurricanes running back Tyrone Moss told Local 10 he did not accept a $1,000 payment from former booster Nevin Shapiro, who's at the center of an NCAA investigation into the Miami football program.
Moss was one of dozens of Hurricanes players named by Shapiro in an investigation by Yahoo! Sports, which triggered a probe at the school.
Shapiro alleged he provided a handful of extra benefits to Moss during his career with the Hurricanes, including a $1,000 cash payment on his first meeting with Moss and entertainment on Shapiro’s $1.6 million yacht.
Moss told Local 10 "I wanted to clear the air and let everyone know I’ve never received 1,000 dollars from Nevin Shapiro. Nor have I ever been on his boat or anything like that. Someone has taken my name and tried to destroy my name. I have always been loyal to Miami. Miami is a great place. Miami has been good to my family and good to me. I had some of my best years at the University of Miami. I just wanted to clear the air and make a statement that I have never taken any money or been on any boat like that. For something like this to happen is just crazy."
Moss added, "I don’t care how it was quoted, I don’t care how it was written or I don’t care how it was said. But just to let everyone know, I have never been involved with Nevin. I have no ties to Nevin. I have never taken any money from him, and I have never been on that guy’s boat. I just wanted to clear the air, because a lot of people around here are saying this, saying that. What did you say, what did you talk about? I haven’t talk to anybody. I have not had direct with anybody. I’m tired of the rumors and things like that. The last few days have been crazy around here for me. I just wanted to clear the air and let everyone know I Iove Miami. I went to school there and had 4 great years there. I would never bash Miami in any type of way or talk negative about Miami. Basically, he (Shapiro)wants attention. That’s all."

Sounds like some alums & veteran players have directed T. Moss to STFU.
I was under the impression there was a "taped" phone conversation aired on ESPN of T. Moss admitting he & other players of his class took money.
Now he's saying he never said such a thing... hmmm...
I would LIKE to believe him.
