University of Miami President Donna Shalala posted this video update today about the on-going NCAA investigation into UM athletics.
Unfortunately, there is still no word from the NCAA on their decision on whether to reinstate the eligibility for the 8-12 players declared ineligible by Miami.
Hopefully on Tuesday or even as late as Wednesday afternoon we will learn more about their status for the Maryland game next Monday on Labor Day.
Mike James for President! James or "Smiley" as he is better known along with his videographer partner AJ Highsmith had a ball during the recent CanesFest event on campus.
The media savvy duo turned the tables on reporters and UM players and coaches alike and did the interviewing instead of being the interviewee. Here are two short clips with:
Miami Hurricanes' Offensive Coordinator Jedd Fisch:
And another with UM Safety RayRay Armstrong:
Who is faster: Travis Benjamin vs Brandon McGHee? Who wins their 1:1 match ups in practice and scrimmages? Who is a likely starter and who is not?
Watch this video and U just might learn some things that U did NOT know...
1st?

Is it just me or do Ray Ray and TB both have the hard to find thinning hair/dred combination in college? What are the odds of that exact same hairstyle being found on both sides of the football on a team in college? 100/1? 1000/1? More?

CORAL GABLES — Stephen Morris beat Maryland last season in dramatic fashion, and he might get to do it again.
By Tuesday, Morris should find out if he or Jacory Harris will be the Miami Hurricanes' starting quarterback in Monday night's season-opening game against the Terrapins in College Park, Md.
After a battle that began in spring practice and remained too close to call as of 10 days ago, coach Al Golden has indicated he'll release a depth chart this afternoon that, presumably, will list a starting quarterback. The decision has been complicated by Harris' uncertain status because of an extra-benefits scandal that has placed his eligibility and that of several teammates, in jeopardy.
It seems highly unlikely that UM would choose to play Harris against Maryland if it has not heard back from the NCAA, which is determining if the senior quarterback accepted money and gifts from former booster Nevin Shapiro.
That points to Morris, a strong-armed sophomore who delivered the signature moment in what was an otherwise disappointing 2010 season for UM.
Morris made his first collegiate start last Nov. 6 against Maryland in place of Harris, who sat out with a concussion. He engineered an 82-yard drive in the closing minutes, finishing with a 35-yard game-winning touchdown pass to Leonard Hankerson with 37 seconds left in the game. UM held on to win, 26-20.
"I could win three Super Bowls and I'll always remember that," said Morris, who turned 19 on Saturday.
Morris started three games as a freshman, playing better than his numbers (53.6 completion percentage, 9 interceptions, 7 TDs) might suggest.
But if Morris starts Monday night, he'll be playing on a much bigger stage than he ever has before. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN with a Labor Day audience eager to see if the Hurricanes can overcome the distractions and, depending on the NCAA, suspensions resulting from Shapiro's allegations of widespread misconduct in UM's football and basketball programs.
If Morris is sweating it, he's not showing any signs.
"A great season," Morris said Saturday when asked what should be expected of the Hurricanes in light of their current trouble. "I don't care what's happening with the NCAA. I have no idea about any of that, but inside the building, there's an unbelievable buzz that this is going to be a great season."
Unlike most of his teammates, Morris finished 2010 on an high note. He completed 22-of-33 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns against Notre Dame in a 33-17 Sun Bowl loss on New Year's Eve.
In between spring and fall practice, Morris attended a camp run by Steve Walsh, the former UM quarterback and current Cardinal Newman coach, and watched film of Matt Hasselbeck, Drew Brees and Tom Brady with offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch.
Fisch has spent several seasons in the NFL as an assistant, including last season as quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks.
"When it comes to Stephen, he's shown great leadership, that he can make all the throws and, most importantly, that he can command the huddle," Fisch said.
Morris' physical appearance is far different from January, 2010 when he enrolled at UM. He was 17 and barely weighed 180 pounds.
Since then, Morris has bulked up to 210 pounds and at 6-foot-2 has an impressive-looking physique.
"It's been a big transformation," said Morris, who attended Miami Monsignor Edward Pace High School. "I look at my high school picture and I have a skinny neck and am just so skinny overall. Now, it's a different story."
But come next Monday night against Maryland, Morris hopes it's the same story as last year.
"Everybody is going to look at how Miami bounces back," Morris said. "I feel very prepared for whatever situation it might be."

My favorite part was:
“(Shapiro) is a convicted felon and a proven liar. Using a guy like that as your key witness, the standard, the bar, has to be set so high that anything less than documented solid proof has to be set aside," Anderson said. “If I put in a complaint to a government agency that I’m relying on a convicted liar and the people corroborating his story are mostly anonymous, they would laugh in our face. If I was to take this to The New York Times or even the New York Post, they would laugh me out of the room. What he put in that story wouldn’t fly. No way. Not ever.”

Ok, a few observations:
1. Maryland is starting 3 soph. On the line including lt tackle, and center. Two huge positions.
2. They r starting a fresh. At FB.
3. One soph at DE, other guys do not have much exp.
4. RS fresh at corner n soph at SS.
5. Two fresh returning kicks.
These are just observations n that is why w play the game. We might not be 100% but that is no excuse!!!!!! I sure hope w focus on their weaknesses and exploit them.

You don't think he's kind of got the receding hairline going there yet?
Seriously, if Morris had won this job cleanly out of camp, would there still be a wait for the depth chart due to the other players having their status undecided or would Golden have already released a, "card subject to change," chart last week already with Morris as your starter on it?

OGV
I think Golden has known for days who hes gonna start
If some of the twos have been getting a lot of snaps then they are going to be out there come kickoff.
Jacory may have said he plans to be out there the same way he planned to be working on his second Heisman by this season.
Golden might just be messing with Maryland, The media, Twitter and everybody else.

Whitlock nailed it. Yahoo! printed more fiction than fact, but the U might pay some price for this.
I always agreed with Whitlock's position, but the national media just want to punish the U for its past success and for its perception, created by programs such as the "Cocaine Cowboys" 30 for 30 segment.
I hope more people start to examine that Yahoo story more closely. My guess is of the current 8 players who have issues, about 3 players will actually have a problem.

Here’s a novel thought these days at the University of Miami: It’s game week.
Amid the NCAA investigation frenzy that has descended upon the Hurricanes athletics program the past two weeks, lurking in the background has been the fact that at 8 p.m. Monday — Labor Day night — the Hurricanes will open their football season at Maryland.

I wonder whether Randy, Hocutt and the other coaches had the usual performance clauses in their contracts...bonuses for grad rates, bowl games...NCAA compliance...and will Miami go after them to get their money back on the compliance issues...might be a reason that Randy has been so quiet...

I didn't know Alonzo had another son (Also names Alonzo, butI don't think he's another AJ) playing LB for Arkansas. Why didn't we recruit him from JC last year?
"Particulars: Highsmith: 6-1/229, Jr.; Phoenix College, preceded by Missouri City (Texas) Elkins. Thomas: 6-3/308, Soph.; Coffeyville (Kan.) CC, preceded by Muskogee (Okla.) High.
The buzz: Both could end up in Arkansas' starting front seven. Highsmith, the son of former University of Miami and NFL running back Alonzo Highsmith, seems to have locked up a starting spot at weakside linebacker. Highsmith made 94 tackles at Phoenix last season. Thomas should play a vital role in Arkansas' defensive tackle rotation. He recorded 15 tackles for loss last season at Coffeyville."

Team grows closer as NCAA probe continues

Throughout the Miami Hurricanes’ Media Day at CanesFest, Jacory Harris remained upbeat, smiling for the roaming packs of reporters who were beating around the bush about the validity of the Yahoo reports in which Harris was implicated by Nevin Shapiro. With his hair and beard longer than usual – he even hypothesized that he’s going “caveman-style” in lieu of his trademark flashy buzz cuts – Harris showed signs of someone not caring much about outside appearances.
“If our coaches, A.D. or compliance director isn’t telling us anything, we’re not worrying about anything,” Harris said. “When we see things in the media on ESPN that’s crazy, we just laugh at it because they’re not here with us, and I didn’t get a text message [from the coaches] about anything, so why should I worry?”
According to reports from The Miami Herald, four of the 12 current football players ruled ineligible by the University of Miami have been cleared because their benefits totaled under $100. Their punishment, to pay back the money to charity and complete some community service, serves only as a brief glimmer of hope that the infractions committee won’t cripple the upcoming season.
For the remaining eight players, who as of now reportedly include Harris and linebacker Sean Spence, their futures have yet to be determined. Coach Al Golden has requested that the NCAA expedite their review of the remaining cases in time to prepare for the Hurricanes’ upcoming game against Maryland. An answer is expected sometime early this week.
“I’ve learned I can handle pretty much anything in life,” Harris said. “No matter what you throw at me, I’m going to swing and hit it right back at you. It’s been a crazy career, but going through it has helped me a whole lot in life. I feel like I still would have been Jacory of high school, still immature, young, had I gone somewhere else and had a successful career and always been on top.”
That positivity may be the only way to combat the overwhelming negativity that has surrounded this program for the past couple weeks. Rumors ranging from postseason and television bans to the dreaded “death penalty” have hung around practices, but inside the locker rooms and out on campus players have found sanctuary.
“This is our home, this is our family,” said senior linebacker Jordan Futch. “When you see all the fans in Miami shirts, it’s great. We can still joke and play around with each other. This is our safe haven; we love each other.”
Lost among the looming NCAA rulings was the off-season battle for the quarterback position, as Harris and sophomore quarterback Stephen Morris continued sharing practice time with the first team offense throughout training camp. Any possible suspensions for Harris would solve the dilemma rather shortly, but Morris has no intentions of letting that get between him and his teammates.
“You always have to be ready for anything, no matter what,” Morris said. “If I’m starting for the Maryland game, I have to be prepared because you don’t know what’s going to happen. But when all four [quarterbacks] are together outside of the building, we never talk about the competition. It’s always fun.”
Now just days away from beginning the season with far more questions remaining than answers available, the only guarantee the players have is each other.
“Facing adversity is what tests the true measures of a man, and I feel like we’ve responded in a positive manner and we’ll only move forward from here,” McGee said. “Our brotherhood, our unity, our camaraderie is so much stronger than it was before; there’s pretty much nothing that can come between this team to divide it.”
