This afternoon, even as the Miami Hurricane football team was wrapping up their second scrimmage of Fall training camp to determine starting positions and establish the depth chart for this coming season, University of Miami President Donna Shalala was speaking out about the current NCAA investigation involving the UM Athletic Department, several former Hurricane coaches and players and fifteen current student-athletes at UM.
While President Shalala was limted in what she could say due to restrictions put in place by the NCAA on commenting on specifics of the investigation, she was forthright and candid in her six minute appeal to the University community and Hurricane fans to remain supportive of the school administration, the athletic department and all of the current student-athletes at UM.
Here is the video of President Shalala's brief yet powerful statement today:

I think we can take it as a given that Hurtt did, in fact, cash a $2500 check from Shapiro. The Yahoo! reporter says he saw the check with his own eyes.
If, however, this is the first time anybody but Hurtt and Shapiro have ever heard of this, it's really tough to blame it on the program.
What would be REALLY bad for the program is if this personal loan to Hurtt WAS why he got fired, but Randy (or even worse, his higher-ups) never reported the violation once he sent Hurtt packing. That would be a bad, bad scene.

I don't think it was ever announced that he was fired. I do recall scuttlebutt to the effect that he was told he should find a new gig.
Posted by: dj moonbat | August 22, 2011 at 06:23 PM
I think it was the Bryce Brown saga that did him in.

DS is just being delebrately thorough on this and wants the public to know that she and the Unviversity are going to implement a very strategic, through investigation. Bottom line is no one should be ineligible and Miami will have a hell of a D this year.

Hurtt was canned for the text messages, remember the mishap with texting recruits! The school had to self report to the NCAA???

I just googled "Clint Hurtt fired," and there's no indication that he was ever officially let go. But the D-lines he coached were not good (maybe as bad as McGriff's secondaries); and in his other role as recruiting coordinator, he screwed up in several ways. So it seems pretty likely to me he was told to go look for new work once he had screwed up the 2010 recruiting class.
Posted by: dj moonbat | August 22, 2011 at 06:44 PM
Yes dj he "resigned" right after that mess. No one ever said it was because of this but the rumors where such that this was the cause.
Posted by: canechic | August 22, 2011 at 06:45 PM
Not worried about Hurtt more worried about the Rat and his frumpy attorney with her unprofessional work ethics and mannerisms. Look I know enough about Attorneys to tell you that the real good ones who have LOTS of evidence say little to nothing at all.

Anyone else hear that Golden has supposedly been contacted about the post-Paterno Penn State job? If this is true, then we'd better begin our next coaching search because I'm sure he will be doing anything to get out of this contract, unless his wife and kids in fact do love it down here and think it is best for them.
I be sitting Club Level this season as it could be our last bowl-eligible for a while.

Even if its not necessarily criminal it is like a civil court case. Miami stands to lose millions, their head coach, and is basically having their program shut down for some yrs to come. Even tho it is not a death penalty.. the punishment in my opinion does not address the issue of justice in constitutional sense....in light of the monetary lose... and it does not address the direction of the punishment as distinguished from the innocent. This is a witch hunt.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | August 22, 2011 at 08:20 PM
So Clint Hurtt is tied by a canceled, cashed check to rat boy? NCAA manual says . . . not a violation of extra benefits for any players. Now, like John Blake being on the payroll for an agent, Shapiro might have something similar entangling the program with his alignment with a sports agency but the agency owner says he's not a representative of the business in question and never was, stressing he overestimated his level of affiliation with the company. Shocking, another tall tale from the prisoner.

Shapiro stands a towering 5'6" when he awakens from a deep slumber giving his intervertebral discs a chance to rehydrate themselves, thereby maximizing his stature.

today's scrimmage
The Hurricanes offense was on full display in Monday afternoon's scrimmage on the Greentree Practice Fields, where the White team edged the Orange team for a 34-31 victory.
With his team down three with seven seconds remaining, Jacory Harris heaved a "Hail Mary" that was caught by Tommy Streeter for a 50-yard gain. However, a swarm of defenders were able to drag down the 6-foot-5 receiver at the one-yard line, ending the scrimmage.
"I thought we had a good tempo ... overall really good effort," coach Al Golden said afterward. "We ran the ball effectively today; it wasn't as good last week.
"We were really pleased with both quarterbacks. They made good decisions. Jacory down by 10 with three minutes left in the game almost pulls it out - it comes down to the last play. That's impressive."
Golden added that "a lot of those drives started in good field position. The kids were ready to go."
Overcast skies kept the temperature down for one of the most comfortable days of the camp and the offense took advantage of the favorable conditions.
The scrimmage was divided up into four 10-minute quarters with the offenses starting drives in their own end. There were no punt or kick-off situations.
WHO WILL IT BE BEHIND CENTER?
The coaching staff will have tough decisions they will have to make when it comes to setting the depth chart, particularly at the quarterback position.
Harris, leading the Orange team and sophomore Stephen Morris of the White squad were a combined 39-of-57 passing for 547 yards with six touchdowns and no turnovers.
Golden said he thinks the team can "win with either (quarterback). I was impressed with them today, the way they ran the offense, leadership."
He added "we have a lot of decisions in the next 48 hours, not just the quraterbacks but the travel squad.
"Hopefully by Thursday morning we'll have a good idea (on a depth chart)."
STRETCH `EM OUT
Streeter had another strong scrimmage. After grabbing three touchdowns in the fall's first scrimmage, Streeter caught two more on Monday and led all players with seven catches for 148 yards.
STRONG SHOWING FROM THE TAILBACKS
Running backs Lamar Miller and Mike James each ran the ball six times in the first half for a total of 99 yards. However, redshirt freshman Darion Hall was impressive with his team-high 11 carries and a touchdown.
GOING THE DISTANCE
Junior kicker Jake Weiclaw may have solidified a starting spot as he closed the first half with a 53 yard field goal for the Orange team.
TOP DEFENSIVE PLAYER
There were several players that made great individual plays on defense, but no one stood out more than senior DE Andrew Smith. In the first half, the Coconut Creek, Fla. native hit RB Eduardo Clements in the backfield for a three-yard loss. On the very next play, he broke through the line as was able to get to Harris for a "sack".
In the fourth quarter, Smith once again was able to sack Harris, drawing the praise of his coaching staff and teammates.
OTHER SCRIMMAGE HIGHLIGHTS
- Big Hits: Dallas Crawford on Eduardo Clements, Micanor Regis on Darion Hall, Darion Hall on Ray-Ray Armstrong, Jeremy Lewis on Jordan Futch, Davon Johnson on Eduardo Clements
- Tackles for loss: Thomas Finnie, Andrew Smith, Micanor Regis, James Gaines, Kelvin Cain
- Sacks: Sean Spence, Andrew Smith (2), Jalen Grimble
- Pass break-ups: Thomas Finnie, Brandon McGee, Andrew Swasey
- WR Aldarius Johnson made some nice grabs on the day, including a sideline catch where he feigned two defenders for a nice gain
- A Stephen Morris pass was tipped at the line by freshman Anthony Chickillo. However, the ball made it to its original target Maurice Hagens, who made a spectacular one-handed catch in the flats and then ran into the endzone for the 20-yard score
- Receiving Touchdowns: Tommy Streeter (2), Clive Walford, Lamar Miller, Maurice Hagens, Rashawn Scott
- Rushing Touchdowns: Mike James, Darion Hall, Stephen Morris
* Golden singled out Rashawn Scott and Phillip Dorsett, saying "We're pleased with them, and I'd say the same with Eduardo Clements. He's doing a great job on special teams, now is getting more looks at running back."
Of the defense, Golden said, "We're making progress. We have to tackle better. But overall if we were live there would probably have been a couple of more sacks in there (since there is no contact on quarterbacks in scrimmages)."
Golden added that "on special teams we have to do a better job of making it a longer field."
