I don't think the sanctions will be that bad. Primarily because the common theme heard--"The cooperation from Miami has been amazing".

I don't see how it could not be that bad. Shapiro was a booster.

VA Cane

OGV he is ready for the NFL, but I think he needs to stay to work on some things. Think Golden said it...his blocking...you have to be able to pass block...stiff arm...still learning....and at times he goes down easy from one guy....this might be because he is a workhorse...but he could stand 1 more year. you know a back does not last but so long up there...so great point...get that degree young man.

I am not going to point out things we all know....and I think the effort was very good....but on D you have to stick to your assignment, be in position, keep that head up and on a swivel....and you have to form tackle. Remember the Lombardi clip "Grab Grab Grab"? We do that way to much....and the other thing we do is the big lick....great...but you got to wrap the up....I love bump and run corners.....but thats way beyond us right now.

dg

Good or Great coaches adapt a scheme to fit the personnel. These kids looked confused as all get out on defense. If Golden bolts, I wonder would Jedd "I CAN" Fisch be interested in the job. So far he has made me a believer. The offense has not looked this good since Chud. I don't think the sanctions will be that bad. Primarily because the common theme heard--"The cooperation from Miami has been amazing". Contrary with USC giving the NCAA "the finger".

PS - The happiest fans I know are Clemson fans..it's like they just finished a 30 year bid. Incredibly polite and mentioning "heaven". Umm...

The Coaches get paid to Coach, everyone here seems to think bump and run is the way to go, don't u think they evaluated that umpteen times. They probably know instead of getting 6-7 yard chunks we will just give up 10 second drives and 80 yard chunks if we do that, so they figure to take their chances a lil at a time. Our Kids can't cover a baby with a blanket they ain't gonna cover NC either. We have had bad coaching and issues in the past but rarely did a miami team not have the HORSES to ride to victory, we flat out do not have the HORSES on D right now. Our secondary sucks. Our DB's could not start in 100 teams right now and our Safety's are better un run support but aweful in coverage.

Felipe it really is ridiculous what people will say behind the guise of a computer...vulgar but I have heard some stuff about Randy Shannon that was just as bad. One of the reasons I did not go to the final game against USF last season.

herbieibis

28 players on defense tells me, aside from injury, some of the homies ain't playing every down and dropping them down on the depth chart isn't making any difference. Play bump and run and blitz, it's the only way I see us getting off the field on defense, on a consistent basis. We need to try something new because what we've been doing isn't working!

Felipe

Coming around to seeing your guys' POV on the defense/coaching. I remember Capers first year in GB. 500 yards passing a couple of games. Next year, #1 NFC defense.

The blind devotion to a scheme that doesn't suit the personnel at hand is killing this team right now. The coaching staff creating some false scarcity by continuing a puzzling roster move policy for a lot of players also is a problem.

Da Skreetzs,
Do you have any news on the recruiting front. Need some positive info. Been looking on Scout & Rivals and realizing signing day is far off, but from what I'm looking at it looks like Duke is it for RB, we still have a few options at CB & SS, Dt looks bleak, Lb's if we can keep them look good, TE, it looks like we have a shot at Freitag or Jackson and WR looks like we're steaked. What's up!

Sounds like a Gator Fan.

No players will transfer unless they don't fit with the new regime. Also if i compare the Miami situation vs other programs that already got their sanctions and the repeated infractions they have committed, Miami will be fine...Vault it! Miami got their house in order in full collaboration with the NCAA. We should expect a reduction in scholarships (between 5-10 per year) for 2 or 3 years at the most.

The Brahma Bull

Not to mention also Hassan, J-12 is one tough cookie. He has taken some real tough shots over the years.

The Brahma Bull

J-12 is on a 2,208 yard 23 TD's and 10 INT pace for the season.

Does anyone think Jacory can't fire the ball in there when he needs to anymore?

Everyone go back and check out that pass to TB#3, he threw it on a rope one of the only times i ever saw him do that and I think his armstrength is improved.

Does anyone on here think if he finished in the top 5 for QB's this year that an NFL team will take a chance on him given his Football IQ, and his experience in a pro style offense and it seems an upside if he can gain weight and maybe ride the pine a couple years and develop.

The Brahma Bull

LM6 is on a 1,622 yards and 12 td pace for the season.

Is the UM investigation over?

Will current UM players be allowed to transfer without sitting out a year like USC when the NCAA ruling comes?

How many scholarships a year will be taken away? And for how long?

Why is there a tribute to UF at Miami's stadium this weekend? That the most un-Miami thing I have ever heard. Is everyone going to be wearing Tebow jerseys?

360, the 2010 Miami Hurricanes out-gained opponents by 98 yards per game. Now UM is being out-gained by -4 yards per game in 2011. Don't forget, UM hasn't played what could be considered a, "good," college football offense yet either and they won't all year unless you consider GT's option a college offense, which I think of as a high school offense run at a college level instead. The blind devotion to a scheme that doesn't suit the personnel at hand is killing this team right now. Disciplinary timeline of QB Stephen Garcia while at South Carolina http://twitgoo.com/4q322p

360Cane

Tim Hasselbeck just analyzed the Eagles perfectly. And his analysis goes right along with our D. If you can watch NFL Primetime, he backs what I'm preaching to this coaching finger pointing. He blames the players by analyzing the game (just like I did) and seeing poor tackling, bad technique and guys are out of position. He explains the coaches are calling the right plays, but its up to the players to excite them.

Watch NFL Primetime and you will get a sense of what I'm preaching here.

But I am a true believer in having ALL the elements in place from HCs all the way down to water boys. Coach G and D get a pass until they have their players. It's how we do things here in CFB. Give the guys time to build THEIR team. Shannon had his and look where were at. I guess we're still stuck with his "foundation".

Roach! That is great! Congrats!

VaCane - the saddest part of this whole defense thing is that for once in many years our offense is pretty good and can score points consistently (for now). Lamar Miller is a bright shining star. But when we are forced to use 5th string running backs in a two deep rotation (Lee Chambers) those points are not always going to hold up.

Ohio_Cane

Coach Golden says that despite his success, Lamar Miller can still be much better.

Al Golden said RB Lamar Miller has a long way to go. Cites health, stiff arms, blocking as improvement areas

Al Golden just rattled off at least 5 areas of the game that Lamar Miller can improve. Clear that sky is the limit & more gains are coming.

Al Golden doesn't sugar coat anything. He answers the questions and criticisms honestly. Have to respect that

Al Golden said he's never seen team react the way they did at halftime holding themselves accountable in 10 months he's been here

Think that's it for Golden... Players now I believe.

orange 'n green in the vein

Let me get this on record:

Lamar Miller is NFL ready now. Lamar Miller needs to get his degree before going to the NFL though because he is somewhat injury prone and is much more likely to sustain a career finisher there than he is coming back next year to finish his degree and improve his draft stock even as little as another year of similar or better numbers would result in for his draft position. I'm not read up on the new CBA implications on rookie contracts so I don't know how limited his entry contract would be regarding where he's drafted but if the money is right, I can't blame him for trying even though in the long run having the sheepskin is going to be the best insurance policy for him in his life going forward IMO.

SOUP, ask the Skreetz if he's heard the high end donors already putting pressure on the head coach to make a DC change reports?

Golden regarding defense: "we have enough talent...if we play as a unit."

Al Golden said playing 28 guys on defense "is way too many."

Golden thinks that Adewale Ojomo is going to be "OK."

Al Golden said defense is so simplified right now we can't get any more simple.

Coach Golden says that the defense is as simple as it possibly can be. As depth and senioroty evolves, the defense will be more complex

Golden says "we're missing a push-the-pocket guy on third down."

Al Golden said challenge right now is for offense to win the game. They need to be the strength.

Coach Golden takes a jab at the media saying that you guys must have been happy that the tight ends got involved

Al Golden with a funny line: "Glad we left Blacksburg making you guys (media) happy with tight end play."

More coming...

Ohio_Cane

Golden presser right now:

Al Golden says North Carolina has "best personnel top to bottom" UM will face this season.

Al Golden says that Ray Ray Armstrong was clearly rusty and has lots of room to improve

Al Golden continues to play up how good North Carolina is. I think he wants his team to take the Heels serious

Golden says he doesn't see UM redshirting many players for the next couple of seasons.

More incoming...

All Canes Blog wants to give Denofrio a pass on why the defense stinks, using youth, injury, suspension and player regression.Well it is true, that we have had season ending injuries to Forston, Buchanan & Porter, that have cut into the depth. Robinson, to my knowledge hasn't played yet and Grimble hasn't played since the OSU game because of injury. Yes, the first game we played without 5 starters, but although we gave up a bunch of yards, the dee only gave up one Td. Forston & Buchanan were there for the K. St game, only missing Vernon & Armstrong and we got run through. Personally, One or two things are not happening: (Veteran players are refusing to by into the defensive schemes or player regression. With all the injuries to the dee-front, we still have veterans in A.Smith, M.Robinson,Ojomo,& Regis. We never had much depth at LB but we do have Spence and in the secondary, we had Telemaque & Nichols & now Ray Ray is back. That only leaves Vernon out who hasn't played. Buchanan & Forston played in three of the first 4 games, with Forston missing the opener. My point is with this veteran leadership, why are we getting toasted worse than we did the firt game? Smith & Robinson, have for the most part been on a milk run, Telemaque has disappeared, Ojomo, Forston & Buchanan, weren't doing much before they got hurt. Somebody is not buying into what Denofrio is preaching and with little or no depth at certain positions, these guys seem to be coasting at times because they know there going to play no matter what.It looks to me like Plain Mutiney!

VA Cane

I was at the game, and all in all it was a good game if you are a fan of football.

We really should have run the ball right from the start. Our first half was slow. The fake? Hindsight is Golden, but hey you gamble. 2nd half, our Offense was really good. J12 had an exceptional game.

Defense did not play well. We did not make plays, we cover poorly, we tackle weak. Too many people said Ray Ray comes back we will be right. Ray Ray still misses tackles and he cannot cover people either. He still has a lot to learn, as do all our guys.

We committed some stupid penalties...same old stuff...thats what kills me the most. THINK!!!! TOs were well under control, ST did good.

We just do not tackle well, cover well or make the big play on D. Yes coaching has to come into play, but players are on the field, and must execute. I would say it was a combination of the two, cause both have responsibilities.

I keep posting, but nothing is showing up. If anything double or triple-posts, just delete it as needed. Sorry.

360Cane

Ok, I will say it again...

Our defense's performance has nothing with Coach D, U Tough or any of that.

We are learning new schemes. And when you're learning something you have to think while on the field. It's not automatic. They have to remember their assignments and how they should take on blocks and bounce plays.

Since we are in learning phase and not automatic phase, our players DO NOT have confidence in the other guy. They are all scrambling trying to remember who they got and what we got.

The 4th down dart up the middle for the win breaks down like this...take notes.

They were in a 3-4. This makes Spence the MLB, and guess who has QB assignment in a run? The MLB. Ray Ray wasn't on the play becausehe had to crash the pitch not the QB. Spence overpersued going after the pitch. QB saw it and kept the ball. Spence reacted but it was too late. He takes the block on with his inside shoulder. That is bad technique. He needed to take the block on with his outside shoulder to fill the hole to make the play bounce outside where you have your OLB and Ray Ray waiting.

He was sealed and the hole was made. He even knew it as to why both his hands were on his helmet after the play. He knows he screwed up and so does Coach D

But yea, it's coaching's fault. I blame it on the learning phase. The defense will be much improved next year. I like Coach D's playcalling and his switch from 3-4 to 4-3 to confuse defenses.

So go back and study the film, understand scheme and each players assignment then comment on it. Not just commenting on the bad coaching when it's not. We are solid on O and is why Fisch looks so good. We have so many holes on D, Buddy Ryan couldn't help this D.

I might be mistaken but I dont think even first round draft picks are making ungodly amounts of money anymore with the new CBA. Plus any RB less than a Heisman trophy winner is rarely drafted in the first round. The fact that an RB's career is often short makes them a risky first round investment and IMO the ONLY reason to contemplate leaving early is if you're a top 10 pick. Just ask B Harris...

I say give Coach D a chance before we send him off after 5 games. Yes this defense has looked horrible but come on, suspensions and injuries will do that to you. Have faith guys. Listening to Al on wqam the big time recruits Eddie Goldman and Tracy Howard have to be looking at this team like they aren't THAT bad but I can come in and play..just like at Qb when Coach Golden said not too many teams can say that with us you can be running with the 2's and get snaps with 1's too. I have faith. This team is a good team. Just needs to be coached still, they dont have last years mentality just the tendencies of last years coaching. Miami will rise again.

Grading Hurricanes vs. Virginia Tech
by Jorge Milian

DEFENSE: The last time I saw a UM team play defense this bad on a sustained basis was probably in 1997. That team, severely depleted by scholarship reductions, had an excuse. This one doesn’t.

No play this season illustrates the defensive meltdown like the 19-yard game-winning touchdown run on fourth down by Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas. Linebackers Jimmy Gaines and Sean Spence were completely neutralized on the play, allowing Thomas to stroll untouched into the end zone.

If it wasn’t for freshman Anthony Chickillo, I don’t know that UM would create any pressure on the passer. Not only is the defense giving up big plays, it’s not creating any. UM has forced six turnovers in five games. Not sure what’s to blame.

Certainly the new system installed by Mark D’Onofrio will create some growing pains. More worrisome is that UM may just suffer from a lack of talent on defense. GRADE: F.

Good question. Let's see what da Skreetz has to say about that?

Golden gives team off today, but has more to say, including, 'Many of them think they're way better than they are...

Who do you think they are???

# 32, #21, #26, #2, #9,#58,#99 and Brennan Caroll...

Montreal-Cane

Lee Chambers is a joke...It's impossible to play worst than # 32

Yeah, I remember hearing good things about Crawford early on... are they trying to redshirt him?

LM6 has no reason to come back. Go make the money young man!

UMike

Isnt LM6 the ONLY canes back to start a year with 5 100 yard games? Hes gone!

anybody know.why kacy rodgers or keion payne aren't getting more time at corner? Or Crawford? They cannot be any worse the mike Williams and chambers. They need the experience

Montreal... I think it's like a lot of our "confirmed recruits."

They change their mind as the season progresses.

I could see Smiley staying, but Lamar is gonna be shown SOOO much money, (he should definitely be a 1st rounder), it will be HIGHLY unlikely for him to stay.

Montreal-Cane

I still think LM6 needs to stay another year, he isnt ready for the physical toll that NFLU takes on you.

3G Cane Lamar Miller is coming back next year with his best friend Mike "smiley" James. They confirmed that on Hurricanes Hotline 2 or 3 weeks ago.James said he would start his master...

This is the worst Canes D in more than a decade. It has to (and will) get better.

I just hope the football gods are appeased with our recent futility and parole us back into the world of the living and relevant before I'm old and senile.

Even IF the football Gods smile favorably upon us once again soon the NCAA is likely to frown upon our recent behavior and slap that smile right off of our faces.

I'll always be a Canes fan, a season ticket holder and go to the games but I don't know if I can take another 3-5 years of blogging about the same old issues over and over again for what now seems like eternity.

Sure would be nice to finish the season off on a winning streak of our own and a bowl victory with some BIG MO heading into the next season.

I agree with you for factual and selfish reasons but the chances of that appear slim and none.

That was NOT an option.

I hear ya. Just remember that there's several dozen programs out there that would love to have just 1/5th of the CANES success! We're spoiled and probably deserved some time in football fan purgatory. I just hope the football gods are appeased with our recent futility and parole us back into the world of the living and relevant before I'm old and senile.

Smith is nothing more than a noseguard, problem is we don't run a 3/4 defense. I mean, who has Dt's in a 4/3 defense that weigh 350lbs? I don't care who we have at CB, they are going to get smoked, if we don't get no pass rush. Opposing Qb's have all day to clean there teeth with a toothpick, before they are bothered by these marshmellows we have on defense. Thank God we really don't have to face an elite passing QB or it could get ugly.

Man Smith was on the field I think 3rd quarter he was getting smoked! Once they took him out we held them to a FG!

He has no endurance which leads to poor technique because he tries to cheat his way around the blocks and gets outta position. I don't understand it to be honest.

How U doing Soup? Hanging in there? Keeping your sanity?

Posted by: DallasTX Cane | October 10, 2011 at 03:35 PM

Barely, just barely. These last five years have been pretty tough and have tested my patience and every one of my last nerves.

Winning at least a few in a row might help?
