Former NBA analyst and current Golden State Warriors head coach Mark Jackson used the phrase so often on ESPN that it became almost like his own personal registered trademark.
Jackson uses the phrase: "Mama, there goes that man!" to recognize a player who makes a completely amazing play or to describe an athlete who has an incredible, record-setting type of performance.
Fortunately for Hurricane fans, University of Miami recruit and Miami Norland high school football sensation Randy "Duke" Johnson has the phrase, "Mama, there goes that man!" said about him often.
Johnson surpassed the coveted 2,000 yard rushing mark before the post-season FHSAA playoffs began. When you play in the 305 against tough competition all season long and you rush for over two thousand yards in a season then you have really accomplished something.
Johnson finished the 2011 season with 2,087 yards on just 208 carries (an average of over 10 yards a carry) and 29 touchdowns.
Mama, there goes that man!
For his high school career he amassed an amazing total of 5,109 yards on 504 carries (again over 10 yards a pop) and 70 TDs. The only two running backs with better career numbers are former Coral Gables star Frank Gore (5,580 yards) and former Killian standout Bobby Washington (5,695 yards).
Mama, there goes that man!
As it turns out, Duke was just getting warmed up during the regular season which would serve as a prelude to the State playoffs where he would eventually lead the Vikings to a State Championship in the 5A class.
The stats below are from our friend Manny Navarro at the Miami Herald:
Two weeks ago at No. 1-ranked Glades Central, a place no Miami-Dade or Broward team had won in 14 previous playoff trips, Johnson — the state’s 5A Player of the Year and a finalist for Florida’s Mr. Football Award — ran for 230 yards and four touchdowns. A week later he posted the fourth-highest single-game performance in Miami-Dade history, rallying his team from a 20-0 deficit at Palmetto by rushing for 375 yards and three touchdowns in a state semifinal win.
Mama, there goes that man!
When combined with the 136 rushing yards in the Championship game in Orlando that adds up to 741 yards in the FHSAA playoffs alone, The stats that Duke racked up in the post-season are as good as many players' entire season totals!
Mama, well, U know how it goes.
Here is some video of the amazing, incredible, sensational Duke Johnson:
Johnson is solid verbal commitment to Miami and was often seen throwing up "The U" throughout the season and at the State Championship game at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. He has also involved in recruiting other star players during the year to join him at Miami and become Hurricanes.
Duke Johnson has already been compared to former UM running backs and current and future NFLU players Clinton Portis, Frank Gore and Lamar Miller. It has been said that Johnson hits the hole quickly and decisively like Portis, is as tough and elusive as Gore and has the breakaway speed of Miller.
Larry Blustein (seen above congratulating Duke after the game), who has been covering high school football in South Florida since before, well since forever, has been quoted as saying: "Duke Johnson is the most talented running back I have ever seen coming out of Dade County."
Somebody better tell his mother: "Mama, there goes that man!"
Foist....

Editorial Review - Publishers Weekly vol. 254 iss. 7 p. 79 (c) 02/12/2007
Talent is "often overrated and frequently misunderstood," observes leadership expert Maxwell (The 360 Degree Leader ), who advises readers on building their strengths to become a "Talent-plus person." In the first chapter, he examines how "belief lifts your talent," whether it's belief in your potential, yourself and your mission that empowers and encourages you. He then introduces a dozen other factors that can be combined with talent to achieve your goals: passion, initiative, focus, preparation, practice, perseverance, courage, teachability, character, relationships, responsibility and teamwork. Synthesizing the work of business gurus like Marcus Buckingham and Peter Drucker with inspiring anecdotes from the lives of famous athletes and coaches, Christian leaders, writers and artists, Maxwell engages the reader with his enthusiasm for his subject matter and clear insights. Well organized and focused, the book conveys how talent can be enhanced through historical and contemporary examples of "Talent-Plus" people in action—from Charles Dickens to Vince Lombardi and Tom Hanks. The Five Dysfunctions of a Team is a[1] business book by consultant and speaker Patrick Lencioni. It describes the many pitfalls that teams face as they seek to "row together".
This book explores the fundamental causes of organizational politics and team failure. Like most of Lencioni's books, the bulk of it is written as a business fable. This book has appeared on American best-seller lists including: New York Times, Business Week, Wall Street Journal and USA Today.
The issues it describes are especially important in team sports.[2]
According to the book, the five dysfunctions are[3]:
1. Absence of trust — unwilling to be vulnerable within the group.
2. Fear of conflict — seeking artificial harmony over constructive passionate debate.
3. Lack of commitment — feigning buy-in for group decisions creates ambiguity throughout the organization.
4. Avoidance of accountability — ducking the responsibility to call peers on counterproductive behavior sets low standards.
5. Inattention to results — focusing on personal success, status and ego before team success.

Yeah, like the gloves, and also I like the "somewhat" retro/classic look with the stripes. Even the helmet has a nice "flair" to it.
Thank goodness we're not Maryland...

Good evening, everyone- two days of hell at work, but CGNC will undersntad why a ride is always a great remedy!
Hope all is well. Is this Guner kid a player for those who follow recruiting and know how JC's stack up at the next level?I'm thinking at worst he's our nickel or dime back next year if he can match the hype.
Posted by: j.w. | December 22, 2011 at 01:44 AM
Thanks, solar- love to see Um getting accolades. It's amazing that all my HS teacehrs are eating crow now, they all told me "The University of Miami is not a good school" when I was accepted in the mid-80
s. Now, at #38 in the nation, I'd say I chose wisely.

Lastly, disappointing performance for the Lady Canes tonight, but love Coach Meier's postgame remarks- she gets it, and will make us all proud for several years. Support this team, folks, they are going to be real special this year.

The Miami Hurricanes knew they would have to find a way to replace seniors Jacory Harris and Sean Spence this offseason.
But arguably the toughest void to fill came as a surprise to Miami, as redshirt sophomore running back Lamar Miller declared for the NFL Draft this month. Mike Detillier, publisher of M&D Draft Report, expects Miller to be drafted as a late first-round pick, with Alabama's Trent Richardson as the only running back taken before him.
"There's not a lot not to like about [Miller]," Detillier said. "He has got a nice combination of power and speed, the ability to make people miss in space, and he's a good receiver coming out of the backfield."
Detillier pointed to former Hurricanes running back Willis McGahee as the type of player Miller can become in the NFL.

"You get great value in Miller," Detillier said. "If he comes back to Miami to play another season, you're not going to touch him in the 20s. And now you get a good situation, where he can slide that way."
Another Miami player that stands out to Detillier is junior offensive lineman Brandon Washington, who also declared for the NFL Draft this month. Detillier believes Washington will be a third-round pick because of his ability to play both the guard and tackle positions.
"I think [Washington is] one of those guys right now that a lot of people don't know a tremendous amount about," Detillier said. "But I think he has an opportunity to really escalate up draft boards."

PBP
Will Likely
Likely, who played six positions on offense, defense and special teams for Glades Central, won the Florida Gatorade Player of the Year award and was named the Lou Groza High School Player of the Year.
His two acrobatic catches and 99-yard kickoff return in Central's win against Dwyer on national television made ESPN SportsCenter's top plays. He had five interceptions and scored 20 touchdowns.
The biggest knock on Likely is that he's short - he's listed at 5-foot-9 but is closer to 5-7 - but even that criticism is reduced when considering the junior's incredible playmaking ability. ESPN's Long said Likely is the best 5-7 prospect since Pahokee's Martavious Odoms, who's now at Michigan, or Fort Myers' Noel Devine, who played at West Virginia.
Likely already has scholarship offers from Alabama, Florida, LSU and Miami, and he'll likely play cornerback and return kicks and punts at the next level.
"Despite being knocked for his size, he's a playmaker in all three phases of the game," Nee said.
