Q: Several universities offered four year football scholarships this year in place of the traditional renewable one year scholarships. Do you see this trend expanding next year and are you in favor of it? If players can still request a transfer but coaches cannot pull a scholarship how will that impact the power and control dynamic between the players and coaches?
A: I think the NCAA President's endorsement of the concept is a good sign for it's development. I'm kind of conflicted on the idea. It definitely protects the morality and the value of the scholarship and prevents teams from oversigning and punishes teams for misevaluating, however, the one trepidation I have is new coaches being forced to take on every player even though he didn't give them the scholarship.
Q: It would appear to the casual college football fan that the SEC continues to dominate in recruiting year after year and the other conferences are trying to play catch-up. FSU and Miami did well (top 10 classes) for the ACC but how do you see the conferences stacking up recruiting wise in 2012 and going forward. Do you sense any shift in status of the conferences or balance of power being restored?
A: FSU and Miami need to start leading the way and winning BCS bowl games and championships to lead the example that ACC football is legit. It's kind of a joke the way Virginia Tech and Clemson represented the ACC in the BCS. It makes ACC football seem like weaker quality football and until Miami and FSU start dominating, then it raises the ACC's profile and every team gets better as a result, kind of like the SEC.
A: Considering that no program has had a more damaging 12 months in terms of reputation, the Miami staff recruited superbly. They recruited South Florida and they're beginning to establish relationships with more than a few collegiate factory high schools in the area. They are also saying a lot that they only recruit Miami and don't do any negative recruiting, so as long as the relationships are built, Miami is providing themselves a great foundation to recruit well for years to come.
A: Obviously, Duke Johnson and Tracy Howard will play. Tracy Howard may even start when you consider the overwhelming lack of depth at corner. Also expect one of the receivers (Jontavius Carter, Malcolm Lewis, or Angelo Jean-Louis) to make a contribution early. Also, a few of the DBs will see playing. There's also likely to be Denzel Perryman-like players who make big contributions in year one.

Da Skreetz sez that #46 Walford will be the man to beat in 2012 at TE for UM.

One underclassman who was not invited was Kansas State running back Bryce Brown. Brown was the No. 1 prospect in the 2009 recruiting class and signed with Tennessee. He transferred to K-State after his freshman season, but played in just two games this season with the Wildcats before leaving the team
damn Bryce.
Cleaveland was my LOF last year. They rotate TE's. Cleaveland will put on a show Soup

ON Hall's suspension...I can only say this:
Da Skreetz sez that there were around 8 players who were required to demonstrate that they were going to be "better teammates" during the the period between 12/1 and 1/31.
As U all know this included two reading assignments and a MINIMUM of 14 supervised or approved workouts.
IF any of the 8 players dogged it on the assignments or workouts then it COULD be Asta Las Vista Baby!

I SAY:
1. I agree. Howard WILL start and Duke will play at several spots during his FReshman year.
2. There will be several WR's from this class that will play a LOT and contribute or start.
3. From this class Vernon Davis is interesting at DB and the dark horse, undersung player is going to be...

Interesting SOUP, in Manny's new blog, Hall's HS Coach said He isn't surprised that Hall got suspended. He's basically saying that He saw it coming.

Out with the Dead Wood!!!Guys who cannot or will not comply need to go. Some of those guys who went to the NFL seemed that way. Not a lot of work ethic, but grumbling and talking could be had at a premium. Positive talk I encourage; complaints on my shift result in bad karma. However, I have been very blessed with great players and have not had a discipline in years. I want to see these young guys get in there....fresh air and all!!!!!

Well Canesport had their big Golden interview and a lot of what was said we heard about before from our insider's.... Nothing surprising.
ITU has a couple good articles about Golden out as well and they mentioned some very good info
1. we are at 91 on our current roster and Golden expects to play at 80ish by this fall and the attrition will come from transfer's, players kicked off the team and guy failing to qualify.
2. The team strength is improving, we had 0 guys that could bench 225 over 30 times before winter testing, now we have 4 or 5 which is really good if you watch the NFL combine you know anything over 30 is great and there are normally less than 20 guys out of about 300 or so tested who do that.
We are also testing guys more often and really monitoring their progress in the weight room. How strong will we be by fall or next fall even? BEAST MODE is coming guys……
On our Roster #’s we stand at 91 and Golden predicts we will be at around 80 by fall and he says he will release the info when the kid wants to basically. I think after spring and the semester ends you will hear about 5-6 transfers/kids kicked off the team. I would say it is safe to say we are really at 89 because Hall is pretty much gone and I believe Thompson will pull a A-Rod and go to Baseball, he is a beast on the Diamond and will be drafted very high. So 89 we will likely have 2 or so not qualify in the fall that gets us to 87 and need to lose 2 more guys to be legal or more so save room for next year.

Rivals 250 is out. They have Kelvin Taylor at #111
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 09, 2012 at 12:13 PM
RE: KT, Chris Nee said ""The apple didn't fall far from the tree," Nee said. "The younger Taylor is a physical runner who not only has a tendency to rip off large chunks of yardage with every touch but he also punishes defenses with a physical running style and seems to run just as hard in the fourth quarter as he does in the first quarter. He is the all-time leading rusher in Florida and will have his pick of colleges."
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 09, 2012 at 12:25 PM
With each team having over 80 players, you'll always have 4 or 5 players a year, that just don't get it. They come in with an attitude and eventually that's what gets them in trouble, that and bad study habits. It just sux for us it happens, for the second year in a row to be at RB, where we don't have the depth. It seems every time we get one or two positions shored up, we spring a leak somewhere else. I can't see Thompson playing but maybe one year of football, if he is that good at baseball. If he makes it to campus, we will have him for at least three years.

Looks like Alex Collins and Jayron Kearse have started out as 4-stars..good way to start the 2013 class
Posted by: UMike | February 09, 2012 at 01:38 PM
Collins is #14,..Kearse #218..A LOT of local talent in the top 100-250..A LOT!
Posted by: UMike | February 09, 2012 at 01:41 PM
We could potentially sign the #3, #10, #12 and #14 prosepects....I wonder why RD Greg Brant out of Delray doesnt have an offer
Posted by: UMike | February 09, 2012 at 01:43 PM
RB**
Posted by: UMike | February 09, 2012 at 01:43 PM
For those that think Golden and his staff just throw around offers, it seems by the looks of the 2013 that is NOT true. Quite a few top 250 local 4-star guys without a Miami offer. Staff is doing their homework, especially if we have a limited amount of spots
Posted by: UMike | February 09, 2012 at 01:45 PM
Collins is a beast, we honestly have soooo much RB talent the next 2-3 years it almost does not matter which one we sign because we will be goo there til at least 2017.
BTW I spoke to Kermit Last nite, He ran a 10.31 last year and plans to be running in the 10.1 range this year. Kid is a beast, he is a lil small but can catch the football he is 5'8 and 175 and ran a 4.34 into the wind he told me recently.
I asked him about taking visits and he said he would, I told him he earned them just make sure he comes to Da U. I talked to him about being the next Santana Moss (track/football star) he told me he will be the first Kermit!!!
Posted by: Hassan | February 09, 2012 at 01:46 PM
That's awesome, Hassan.
Side note: Who names their kid Kermit? Lol
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 09, 2012 at 01:49 PM
Kermit like Duke is just his nickname, his first name is Levonte.

Last 5 yrs, average ESPN recruiting class:
1) Alabama
2) Texas
3) UF
4) FSU
5) UGA
6) USC
7) LSU
8) Ohio State
9) OU
10) Miami
11) Clemson
12) Notre Dame
13) Mich
14) Auburn
15) Tenn
16) UCLA
17) SCar
18) Stanf
19) UNC
20) PSU

Kermit is a good kid, he is a lil small of course but at 175 he is not like 150 lbs like TB was. He is the type of kid that at least an opposing coach has to game plan around his speed in the return game and go routes, so that is all you acn ask for because he makes the game easier for the other 10 guys because of that special skill.
Posted by: Hassan | February 09, 2012 at 02:27 PM
The 2013 class needs to be a beast and if this happens , the elevators on the way up to the top!

### Despite the departures of Travis Benjamin, LaRon Byrd and Tommy Streeter, UM should be fine at receiver next season, with six incoming players to accompany potential starters Allen Hurns and Philip Dorsett. But receiver will be a major problem when spring practice begins March 3, because Hurns will be out with an injury and Rashawn Scott may be, too. That leaves only Dorsett, Davon Johnson and Kendal Thompkins among scholarship players.

No inside info here, but I don't see Davon Johnson being on the team come Spring/Summer.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 09, 2012 at 03:00 PM
All you need to do is see Kelvin Taylor in person
Then, finally (hopefully), people will start understanding that Rivals/Scout aren't the end all/be all of evaluating ... some of their reps that are at high school games are clueless. Completely clueless
Rayshawn Jenkins barely being given a 3 star is hilarity in itself
Posted by: Six | February 09, 2012 at 03:04 PM
Checking in from home today, no fun having a sick kid. Hall would then appear to be tip of the iceberg, if we are going t obe around 80. My guess is that 2-3 from the incoming class don't get in due to clearinghouse problems, and the remainder either decide they would rather play at Youngstown State, Villanova, UNH, etc.

With the way we cleaned up in South Florida and Tampa this year, with big time kids publicly stated they wanted to stay home for their city and breaking back in the Tampa area and Plant hs, with JR days and camps..I think Golden will clean up this year..with some many local recruits in the top 250, Miami will have a top class again, especially IF we can manage to win at least 8 games this year, and perhaps make an appearance in the ACCCG
Posted by: UMike | February 09, 2012 at 03:23 PM
8 wins and the ACCCG would be difficult this year in my opinion. I think everyone expects a 6 win team maybe 7. The team is so young, there are going to be growing pains. I hope you are right, cause it would make recruiting much easier, but such young classes don't usually fare too well.
Ohio: That 5 year average of recruiting class ranks is pretty interesting. other than Alabama at #1, the average 5 years have been pertty off. Texas, UF, FSU, UGA all have done nothing.
