While most sports fans had their minds on a certain football game being played in the Mid-West on this Super Sunday in February your Miami Hurricanes were busy focusing on playing a few college basketball games in the deep South.
As people all across the globe were grilling and chilling and getting their Super Bowl buzz on the University of Miami basketball teams were busy beating Clemson and Duke.
The seventh-ranked UM women's team easily dispatched on the Tigers 68-47 in Coral Gables while the men's team was busy pulling off their biggest win of the season in a huge, stunning overtime upset of the fifth-ranked Blue Devils in Durham.
While the women's team's win was impressive, it was the men's team's 78-74 victory over #5 Duke that was the big news of the day. Miami's win in front of nearly 10,000 Cameron Crazies ranks among the biggest wins in recent history for the UM men's team.
Head coach Jim Larranaga helped his team keep their composure as they once again struggled down the stretch after leading by as much as 16 points in the first half. However the Hurricanes somehow managed to find a way to win a game that they would have lost more often than not in recent years.
Big Reggie Johnson scored 5 of his 27 points in overtime to lead the Hurricanes in scoring. Johnson was dominant down low and had the green light from Larranaga to take it the the bucket all day.
Kenny Kadji dropped in 15 points of his own in returning to the UM lineup before fouling out late in the second half.
The UM men's team now stands at 14-7 on the season and owns a 5-3 record in the ACC which puts them clearly in the top half of the conference.
Miami's next three games are at home against VT, on the road in Tallahassee against the Seminoles and then back home with another big game against North Carolina coming up.
Oh, in case I forgot to mention it the University of Miami also won the NFLU Super Bowl on Sunday.
Former Hurricanes Antrel Rolle and Kenny Phillips became the latest Miami alumni to win a Super Bowl as the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots 21-17 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
It was Rolle who helped to corral and control the Patriots' Wes Welker all day and it was Phillips who batted down the last second desperation pass from Tom Brady into the end zone to seal the win for the G-Men.
So in the end Sunday turned out to be just another regular day in the NFLU but a day that also provided a huge win for the Miami Hurricanes basketball program.
GO CANES!
Weeeeeeeeeeeee!!

I do not watch a lot of basketball, but I always pull for the Canes in hoops. Nice job, big win. If they can win some more games, they have a shot to make the tournament, that would be nice. He is a good coach for sure.

Great effort from the basketball team. They can frustrate you beyond belief at the end of games, but they have a knack for catching themselves before they fall flat on their faces.

Shocker: Rivals rated a Gator coach as their top recruiter of 2012.
Only ONE Miami coach made the top 25: George McDonald.

How is Durkin Rivals recruiter of the year? Let me see who had a more impressive haul, Stanford, Miami (due to NCAA sanctions), UCLA, Rutgers, Vanderbilt.
The fact that Stanford can have a top 5 recruiting class with their high enrollment standards is impressive. Same with Vanderbilt. Rutgers is a miracle considering they lost their coach. UCLA very impressive considering the coaching upheaval. Miami was impressive simply for the fact that they have had so much turmoil over the last year and still an unresolved NCAA investigation.
Florida is considered top 5 every single year, how is that news? This is why I hate the recruiting sites. So many biases its unbelievalbe.
So happy the Canes beat duke. As a local in the DC area, I can tell you first hand coach L is the real deal. Great great great coach. Its hard to fully grasp how great of a job he did at GMU if you dont live in the area. He performed miracles at GMU and I can tell you great times are coming to Canes Basketball.

I wish I could disagree with the Heather Dinch's ACC rankings for next year, but the fact that the team is so young and we are all unsure of how good Morris or Williams will be at QB makes me think 6th place is about right. If the starting QB plays really well then I would move Miami up to 5th maybe 4th.

Damn, I thought these two for KS graduated:
12. Kansas State Wildcats
Previous rank: 12
With quarterback Collin Klein and linebacker Arthur Brown coming back this season, the Wildcats might be among the Big 12 favorites, along with Oklahoma and West Virginia (if the Mountaineers get to leave the Big East). Klein will enter next season as a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate after totaling more than 3,000 yards of total offense and scoring 40 touchdowns last season. Top tailback John Hubert and receiver Chris Harper are also coming back, but three starting offensive linemen will have to be replaced. Five starters are also leaving on defense. Kansas State coach Bill Snyder, 72, filled his team's biggest need by signing four top defensive linemen: juco transfers Chaquil Reed and Wesley Hollingshed and prep recruits Travis Britz and Demonte Hood.

SOUP, wouldn't surprise me. Under-perform in college, show out in NFLU.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 06, 2012 at 04:21 PM
Why would that be surprising that a guy who measures out to closer to six and a half feet than six feet and can run a 4.4 or faster time would get a shot at the next level regardless of college production? The NFL draft is a measurable exercise, it's why the combine shoots guys up the rounds more than what they did in college does. Taylor Stubblefield (Purdue), Josh Davis (LSU), and Taurean Henderson (TTech) where 1, 2, 3 on the all time NCAA career receptions list until Broyles passed them before blowing out the knee last season and none were drafted. Why? Measurable physical traits or lack of desirable ones thereof. Byrd and AJ have the measurable attributes you look for and will go with Streeter in this draft if they catch a GM's eye at the combine or pro day with their workouts because the risk/reward equation says you take a chance on them with the passing rules skewed the way they are now in the NFL toward WR's and QB's and against the DB's and DL's.

Posted by: j.w. | February 06, 2012 at 04:13 PM
U know who told me the NFLU scouts have asked about him as a possible late round selection? I am as shocked as U are!
But what OGV says is TRUE: Physically both AJ and Byrdman are the type of WRs the NFL is often looking for.
Posted by: SOUP | February 06, 2012 at 04:38 PM
AJ1 wasn't joking when he said AJ2 would be the best UM WR ever, he just forgot to mention the, "in the NFL, not at UM," part. Seriously, it'd be a great athletic comeback story if he can pull it off, I'm just not betting on him at this point.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | February 06, 2012 at 04:49 PM
I am stunned- he has the size and hands, just not enough speed and, as harsh as this may sound, a pea-sized brain. I hope he does make it, don't get me wrong, but never would have imagined him getting drafted ahead of the kids who actually played last season.
Posted by: j.w. | February 06, 2012 at 05:30 PM
In order to better rated, we can't be losing to the Virginias & BC's of the world.
As far as draft related stuff, it's been our M.O. the last several years, play half azz in college & show out in the pros.
Posted by: herbieibis | February 06, 2012 at 05:35 PM
Amazing...a kid who was suspended for his senior year and didn't even have the gumption to transfer to a Division II school and compete...don't know how that will translate...
"Johnson said he is working out in Miami with professional trainer Bo Smith and has lost 15 to 20 pounds.
He is down to 205 on his 6-2 1/2-inch frame.
His agent, Carlos Rodriguez, and agency partner Manny Vadillo, said UM coach Al Golden has given Johnson permission to participate in UM’s pro timing day before the NFL Draft — as long as he graduates.
He is expected to get his degree in sports administration Dec. 15, as UM allowed him to keep his scholarship." Miami Herald- SMD
Good for Golden...

On this we agree 100%.
I may have lost that bet from back in the da with La Verdad between Marcus Robinson and AJ2 as to who would be drafted higher. Although with MRob it is still wait and see?

Glad to see some buzz here about CanesHoops! But alas it degraded into a football discussion!
Love the effort yesterday and as Sid said today when he had Coach L on if you don't think having Coach is the difference between beating Duke and losing to them you are either "naive or stupid" The man has made a tremendous impact on this team. Instead of the patented second half Frank Fake-out we have the Larranaga Lift Off!

From ESPN: By Heather Dinich
"We've already looked at what Todd McShay had to say. Here's how the ACC fared on Mel Kiper's latest Big Board :
No. 7 UNC DE Quinton Coples
No. 10 BC LB Luke Kuechly
No. 22 Miami RB Lamar Miller
"Anyone else having second thoughts about David Wilson's decision to leave the Hokies early? It will be interesting to see where he ends up. Hopefully everything works out and his decision pays off. It looks like McShay has more faith in the ACC players, but his draft board goes 32 deep, while Kiper's Big Board is a 25-player list. Both of them, though, seem to agree that Miller is the better back, or at least he will be at the next level."

Good look to AJ. I wished he took his time at the U as seriously. Goes to show there was a disconnect between the coaches and the players. Best of luck to all trying to go to the nfl. I hope they make it and find great success.

Anyone notice the U men basketball team got a vote in the AP top 25 this week after getting their first win ever at Cameron? I can't see them taking down FSU (hate to say it), but if they can get through this week unscathed there'd be a whole lot more votes coming and some increasing belief in this team. I'm too used to Haith's teams over the years to believe any of this yet...
