As we near the end of February and Winter fades in sunny South Florida the warmth of Spring (football!) will quickly give way to the heat of Summer (more football!).
So we thought we would take this opportunity to look at things that are "hot".
Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model Kate Upton is definitely hot.
New York Knicks basketball player Jeremy Lin is so hot that he now apparently owns ESPN or at least it seems that way.
Kim Kardashian, who is probably going to try to get a date Jeremy Lin because, well because he is hot, is also hot.
Even the movie The Rum Diaries starring Johnny Depp while drinking rum in Puerto Rico is hot.
But to find the hottest team in town you have to look no further than over in Coral Gables where you will find your Miami Hurricane women's basketball team.
And no we do not mean "hot" in a sexist way, but HOT as in winning a lot and performing at a very high level. In fact, they are so hot that this week the Hurricane lady hoopsters found themselves ranked in the top 5 in the AP Top 25 poll for the first time in their 36 year history.
That's hot!
Miami's first-ever win at NC State and third consecutive victory over rival Florida State, coupled with the Blue Devils' 63-61 loss at Maryland resulted in the poll movement. Duke slides down to No. 7 while Maryland - a team that Canes swept in a season series - is the new No. 6 team in the country.
Miami head coach Katie Meier downplayed the expected jump in the polls after yesterday's 67-60 win over the Seminoles, "It really doesn't matter. It's great for building the program and generating interest. But does that make us hit more free throws? It does nothing for us. We love having a very narrow focus, and we have a mission and our next game is Duke."
Even former dual-sport UM basketball and football player Jimmy Graham, who just so happens to be the hottest player in the entire National Football League, recently got into cheering on the UM women's basketball team at the BankUnited Center.
That's hot!
The Canes head to Durham on Friday in a game that will most likely decide the regular season champion and the ACC Tournament's No. 1 seed. Tip-off for the highly anticipated match up will be at 7 p.m. ESPN3 will provide live streaming coverage and as always UM's own WVUM will have the radio call on 90.5 FM and wvum.org.
We have been told by reliable "inside source"s that tickets to that game are really hard to get.
That's hot!
And in closing we would just like to say that Katie Meier, the UM women's basketball coach (and we mean this is the most respectful of ways) is really hot. Sorry but we couldn't resist!
First?

Papa Cane - Folks, RB Darris Hughes transferred to Miami, not from it. He will get plenty of time with the Scout team, and some snaps. Solid player.

WEDNESDAY BUZZ COLUMN
Barry Jackson
Eight UM players will participate in the NFL Combine in Indianapolis beginning today, and they have a lot to prove. Green Bay Packers scout Alonzo Highsmith, the former UM star, said several Canes underclassmen made a mistake by turning pro.
"A lot of these kids are in for a rude awakening,” he said. “Maybe parents are telling them what they want to hear. I don’t think they’re getting good advice. After watching film, it was rather disappointing. I watched the Virginia and Boston College tape and I didn’t see many good players. Lamar Miller shows flashes of dynamic speed and ability, but that’s all I saw.”
One current player said besides financial incentive, some players simply didn’t want to go through Golden’s offseason conditioning program again. But UM was puzzled that all the underclassmen turned pro before getting their assessment back from the NFL’s draft review board.

U have to be smart to get into Miami but not how smart some of our bball players are on the court. And football for that matter.
'canes choked away the game tonight. Dumb turnovers at the end of the game. As much as I like Scott & Grant time to move on from these guys.

Do you still get a canespsce shirt for being first?
Even all the way up to the frozen north?
Posted by: Habcane | February 21, 2012 at 10:35 PM
I think the players that left early with the exception of a couple was pure laziness and a lack of desire for the offseason schedule and they didn't want to read those books golden required. Basically we lucked out by having these guys leave. In the short term it hurts but long term will benefit us.
I didn't see the game tonight but disappointed at the loss.

I hate losing. We were suppose to win this one.
As always tho-ITS ALL ABOUT THE"U"

It's going to take more time for Coach L. Asking him to teach these kids something in 5 months that they haven't learned in a lifetime was too much to expect. This is a better team than what Haith had, ironically as he seems to have hit his stride at Mizzou. I continue to beleive he gave up at UM, and the kids just didn't learn from him.

Top reasons for the loss.
1. Guard play is horrendous. From D to running the up and jacking up bad shots, not getting the team into good position.
2. Big Reg played 15 mins and scored 3 points, That is not because of Maryland. That is 100% because he is playing on 1 leg while dragging the other. He can not rebound out of his space and has no lift. They need to shut him down and Knife that knee now to try to be ready for next fall.
3. No desire to rebound the ball. Reg can't because of his leg so that puts a lot on the rest of the team. Kadji did ok with 8 but you have to WANT to rebound, it is a man's world under that hoop and you got to want it.

Hells yeah Hassan.

This team also misses Julian Gamble.
While He wasn't an elite player,
He did bring a "Junk Yard Dog" mentality to the team...

"The Jeremy Lin effect: Ticket of America’s Michael Lipman said courtside seats for Thursday’s Knicks-at-Heat game are selling for $6000 behind the basket, with one sideline courtside seat going to a rapper for $12,500 – both double what Lakers-at-Heat and the Celtics-at-Heat home opener commanded. Those sideline courtside seats cost $1500 to $2000 for most games. One went for $20,000 in the NBA Finals."
I will sit in my 56.00 seats tonight and tomorrow night and watch the best Team in the NBA...OKC Thunder...beat the Lakers and Celtics in back to back games...great to live in the real world.

Mike Farrell - Latest offer for NJ DE Tashawn Bower is Miami
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 22, 2012 at 10:38 AM
Someone go look at the Canes roster, and even the offers that are out right now. Is it just me, or are the Canes moving to a 3-4?
I know Coach D'No and Golden always say they want to be "multiple" to run different fronts, but I see a 3-4, not a 3-4 OR 4-3 or 3-3-5, etc.
I'm no expert on schemes or formations, so that's why I'm asking. Maybe I'm missing something?
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 22, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Gotta say, watched that video. Those 'Canes teams seemed so fast, athletic and strong. Nothing like what we see today.
Hopefully in couple of years when Golden gets all of his players.
I like what coach L is doing. But our guard play has been a liability for a long while. Next year they should be much better with a year under their belt and hopefully they will be healthy.

Check www.wqam the Miachael Irvin show. Coach Golden interview was really good
Posted by: Hassan | February 22, 2012 at 11:28 AM
Ohio,
Purely speculation but I believe there heading towards a 3-4. You know how I feel about our D-Line play, especially the tackle position, We just can't get an elite tackle. We have been way to average for a long time up front. 2 of the guys we brought in are around 6'1, great for the nose tackle position, not so much for a 4-3. We still don't have the numbers or the kind of size yet, to go full time to a 3-4. Look at Bama's Lbs. most of these guys are in the 240 range or bigger, at least 3 LBs they brought in are already, in the 240 range. Golden has mentioned time and again about getting bigger & tougher. Florida, just doesn't produce a ton of elite DT's and the few they do, FSU is getting them. We still are about 3 LB's short on the numbers chart. Losing Brown & Northrup, to me hurt because they already had the size to play. You take a guy that comes in at 210, it's going to take a couple years to get him up to 230 (good weight),. The problem we have, most of these guys have to play now and not being able to reshirt guys hinders the weight gaining process, as well as getting stronger.
Posted by: herbieibis | February 22, 2012 at 11:31 AM
I agree with Herbie, you can never have enough big, strong and fast athletes whether they are LB's, DE's or hybrids. It might be a signal that we are transitioning to more of a 3-4 but I think it has more to do with Golden just wanting to get more size on Defense.

One of the ramifications we may see from the 4 team playoff that college football is heading towards, is the fact that schools will set up soft scheduels to sneak into that 4 team playoff. Wasn't Virginia Tech #5 at some point this past season (lol).
Let FSU play Savannah (lol), they will be a 3 loss team this coming season and Jimbo will be on a burning hot seat.

Former Cane commit Brandon Holifield commits to Mizzou. Says Canes didn't pull scholarship.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 22, 2012 at 02:40 PM
The fact that Golden didn't pull his scholarship shows how professional Golden is. Golden could have pulled his scholly and used it for young or Blue but didn't. I think its official, I have a man-crush on coach Golden lol.
