First let us have a moment of silence for the once historic and recently demolished and forever gone City of Miami Orange Bowl.
Now let us enjoy a moment of festive celebration for the beautiful, new Miami Marlins Park baseball stadium!
Tonight the Florida, whoops, make that Miami Marlins, will have the grandest of openings as they hold the historic first game ever at Marlins Park as they host the St. Louis Cardinals on opening day of the 2012 Major League Baseball season.
The Cardinals are the defending world champions having won the 2011 World Series. The Cards roster includes former UM player Jon Jay (seen above) who last year became another former Hurricane to wear a professional sports league championship ring.
In 1993 when the Marlins played the first game in franchise history at what is now Sun Life Stadium Mr Marlin Jeff Conine was in left field. He was also on the team when they won their first World Series in 1997. Tonight he is part of the MLB broadcast crew at Marlins Park and may be lucky enough to throw out the historic first pitch, a secret the Marlins are keeping under warps.
New manager Ozzi Guillen will lead The Fish onto the field and hopefully into the MLB playoffs this season. The Marlins have significantly upgraded their roster and have added some serious major league talent to the young talented team they already had in place.
Even as we weep for the gone but not forgotten Orange Bowl we also celebrate the new Marlins Park and hopefully can look forward to starting a new winning tradition at this historic site in central Miami.

2. My boi Fins would be a no doubt starter if they just let boi play WRs physical and stop it with that 10 yards off the f n line.
3. For those creepin about recruits for 2020 lol. Keep in mind that Al will NOT take any ballah that aint takin care of sh$# off the field or been actin the fool with other colleges. He will be more open to the recruits for that 2039 class lol. Chick, Smiley, Denzel, GBo and goons say their sons are Miami locks lol.

Nah I am excited for sure. Standish Dobard looks pretty damn good.
Per ESPN:
"Standish Dobard (New Orleans/Edna Karr), one of the nation's most sought-after tight ends, has committed to sign with Miami-FL, multiple sources report.
Auburn, Colorado, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Alabama, Mississippi State and Texas Tech were among the other programs to offer the 6-foot-4, 245-pound junior. "

The 4* CB teammate must be Noel Ellis? If so, awesome.

Just spent three weeks on edits and re-writes of basic things. Amazing how people can nitpick. I can't believe that CANESPACE is embracing this new stadium. It is a stadium like Cowboys stadium built for the super rich and to the exclusion of the lower or middle class. The tradition at UM was to cultivate the lower and middle class fans.
That is why the move to JRS or whatever they call it now, failed for UM. Fans who were willing to put 6 quarters in an express ride bus to the OB will never pay 20.00 parking at the Dolphins stadium, and the average baseball fan will abandon this new stadium for the same reason. This place is a grave site waiting to happen.
The OB survived ridiculously bad times because it appealed to the average Miamian and not to the rich. The Marlins plan is a marketing plan without a touch of any reality. People are losing homes, apartments, cutting back on food, etc. during these difficult economic times. Who really thinks this plan for the Marlins is sustainable?
When I think of the 50 yard line at the OB I think of the players who were so damned proud to ever see that real estate and fought tooth and blood to protect it. I just doubt the same feeling will ever exist when a player who earns the minimum of 3 million a year in baseball will ever make the effort to defend it in the same way that UM players once did to protect that turf. He may be in the shade when he tried to do so and not in 100 degree heat. I go with the player who defended the turf in the heat than those who defend it in comfort. It is just not the same.
I think UM has locked itself in the same no win. Fans will never embrace this stadium when prices are so high, even during good economic times, and they have no chance in the current economy. I really don't know how Floridians pay their bills given the low wages in the state. You can't alienate the lower and middle class and build a successful program.

PS - Dobard and Darling are HUGE gets for the Canes. Mainly Dobard. Kid is a great pass-catching TE, and is from SEC country.
I heart this staff.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | April 05, 2012 at 09:13 AM
I never understood the paying for parking...I can understand if it is a private lot or something...but when I pay X amount of money for tickets, pay crazy amounts of money for food and drinks...there is no way in hell I should have to pay to park at a stadium I already paid money to get into. Crazy..but somewhere along the lines people accepted it.
I am coming down to visit next week..and thought about visiting this new stadium..they have tickets as low as $17....but I dont know if I can handle the drive down, parking and walking..and it NOT be my beloved Orange Bowl.

UMike-There has always been something fundamentally wrong with paying for parking.
Posted by: 3G Cane | April 05, 2012 at 10:41 AM
I refuse to go to any sports events other than Canes games for the very fact that its become so cost prohibitive. When owners stop over paying for teams like Magic Johnson and company paying 2 billion for the Dodgers then maybe prices can go down.
I heard someone on a radio show once say that sports teams are not an owners core business. They are not meant to be the owners main form of revenue. But when owners treat the teams they own as such it becomes more about business than the fans, the team or simply winning.
Thats what we see happening with the Dolphins and other teams in all 4 major sports. Owning a sports franchise has become about generating revenue. I do not believe that was the case 20 or 30+ years ago. Hence why you could buy a team for 100 or 200 million and even less but now most teams average close to 1 billion dollars or more. Most of that is due to TV revenue.
Professional sports have become a rich man's game from the players to the owners. The middle and poor class will continue to be left out for the forseeable future.

Soup - I may be wrong about this, but isn't coach D'No's defensive philosophy to not give up the big play. I believe with the lack of talent in the pass coverage coach D gave the receivers a big cushion so as not to give up the big play.
My question is, with the improvement of the new starts such as Finnie, and the incoming freshman, shouldn't that change? Or I should ask, will that change?

Definitely. I mean...I bought tickets, jerseys, food, drinks, etc etc just to be able to come make you money..and now I have to pay to park in front of the building that I already paid to get into? lol

And of course to also walk on the hallowed ground of what was once The Orange Bowl.
It is not blasphemy its just change and progress. Can't stop it, I already tried.

1. U are 100% correct based on what he told me directly at the NSD after-party.
2. The base defense will NOT change in philosophy or concept. The biggest difference with the new talent is it will allow him to vary it up, take some risks in press or 1:1 coverage and blitz more often to keep the offense off balance. That will be the biggest change overall.
Well that and better recognition of the play, faster reaction to the ball and better tackling.

UM offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch says he wants "50 or 60" catches from tight ends in 2012. Canes got 28 from TEs last year & 22 in 2010
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | April 05, 2012 at 02:16 PM
TheWhat...he is another thing. Playing defense is SO much easier when you have an offense that can regularly give you 28+ points and when your defense can play with a 14 point lead. That is when you can take some risks and gamble a bit more.
How many times did Miami have a 14 point lead last year?
How many times did they score more than 28+ points?
How many time did they score 17+ at the half?

Where is Hassan?
ESPN and Brighthouse Networks Sports in Orlando reporting that Orlando Magic head coach Van Gundy told the media today that "Dwight Howard wants me fired. Management told me that he wants me fired."
Howard denies allegations.
Van Gundy was quoted as saying: "I am coach right now at 12:02 PM but if they want to fire me at 12:05 then let them. I have plenty of money, I can get another job."
Asta la vista baby!!!

After their performance at the UM tourney in Naples UM coaches were not invited to play in the event. LOL

DA SKREETZ IZ ON FIYA!
1. Goin to hit up that question sent to me about the D secondary. This is this boiz opinion by what I see at practices. A main reason Coach D went soft mode was cause the safties back there couldnt cover up in the passing game good enough. I cant stand how that D played limp as f in that secondary. It sure aint helpin that last year them ballahs had no f n clue how to tackle for an entire game.
2. It pizzez me off even more that Fins didnt see the time he had earned in practices. There wasnt 1 member of the D staff and Al that didnt rave about boi at every practice, which f n puzzles me more. Boi gave up near 5" in height to Streets yet still was the only 1 that stopped him more then any on that D.
3. An 10 yard cushion to prevent big plays dont mean sh$# when you cant f n tackle. 5 plays to score or just 1 what the f is the difference teams still gettin 6 points.
4. Fins followed by Gunter are the most physical, aint afraid to hit ya CBs and from there it falls way off. I'll come back with more later after I cool back down from that blast lol
Posted by: SOUP | April 05, 2012 at 02:45 PM
Ohio...Fisch said he wants UM TEs to go from 28 catches to 50-60 catches in one year? I wanna sleep with all 10 of the Victoria's Secret supermodels but hey who are we foolin?
Walford and Cleveland and are gonna have to improve immensely and get busy because I don't think the blocking TEs like Dye, Perry, White or Sanders are going to all of a sudden become primary targets in this offense.
I think 36-48 passes (3 or 4/game) may be a realistic target for the TEs.

Blake Griffin = Best Offensive Fouler in NBA lol
Posted by: UMike | April 05, 2012 at 02:57 PM
That's the reason, it doesn't do any good to rave about what somebody does in Spring ball. They talk about this kid and that kid and when Fall camp is done and the season starts, some of these Spring superstars are no where to be found.I want someone who plays Balz out on Saturdays.
Great news, we finally have a highly touted TE, in the fold and a future OT. I just hope once Goldie's camps start, he doesn't get to carried away and start passing out ships like it's halloween candy. This next class, needs the over-all quality.
