What happened to freedom of speech?

Ozzie Guillen suspended because he says he loved Fidel because Fidel has outlasted a bunch of US Presidents? WTF? Only in the Banana Republic!! and Bud Selig agreeing with the suspension even though he sat next to Fidel at a MLB game in Havana several years ago LMFAO

Now if he said he loved Hitler personally I would be pissed but its thing, but Fidel? Child Pleeeze!

Cheerleaders = championship week form, that's all that matters here. Petrino has plenty of time to do some explaining to his wife as she takes half of what he owns. Couldn't have happened to a nicer dip-sh!t this side of Chip Kelly. I'm hoping Coker gets his job.

WEDNESDAY BUZZ COLUMN

### UM offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch said Tuesday that receiver Rashawn Scott has had “the most consistent spring of anyone on offense” and that receiver Kendal Thompkins has been a pleasant surprise... Al Golden, asked why having so many NFL prospects did not equate to more wins last season: “There’s clearly a talent pool we have to get more out of. … It’s my problem. It’s something I have to fix.”... UM said center Reggie Johnson still hasn't informed them if he's going to the NBA or returning for his senior season. Every other player has committed to return.

Great article soup. I wish i lived in miami again to go to all of these events. I wish canes fans that live in and around the 305 would understand how lucky they are to have so much access to canes games and events. I hope they start taking advantage of that access like the fans in fort Meyers.

TJL - I agree with everything you said. He didnt say anything to get susPended about. Even if he said he said something positive about hitler he shouldn't be suspended. Now if he said something racist or prejudiced I could understand but what he said should not be cause for suspension.

So much for Arkansas being in the SEC hunt and championship hunt.. Looks like LSU is coming out of the SEC and I'm betting USC beats them in the NC. What a great guy Petrino was though (sarcasm). He abused the over-signing rule so much that the SEC had to put a limit on how many kids a school could sign. He will be out a year or two and he will be back, but he will still be a clown.

Felipe

Ozzie making himself sound like an assclown is hardly a hangable offense. Sheesh people, relax. Lest we overreact and squelch freedom a la he who shall not be named who we decry.

Great blogpost. Ryan Williams.

SOUP, I like your pick for starting QB, but is that an honest opinion, or are U messing with a certain blogger who hates him?

IMO, Morris is the starter Game 1.

I agree, the MOST likely scenario is this:

Starter: Morris
Back-up: Williams
My Pick: Crow

Their best attributes:

Morris: Strong Arm and Experience
Williams: Accuracy and Playbook
Crow: Leadership and Attitude

"Great blogpost. Ryan Williams."

Yeah, yeah! I'll +1 that.

Art Kehoe to ESPN:

"If anybody thinks Miami is gone, you’re going to learn the hard way. We are not gone, and we’re not falling off by the wayside. We’re going to win and we’re going to win big, and the reason I feel that is the guy at the top. I don’t know how close we are, because we’ve had a couple of dents in our armor, but I know it’s coming. I watched Coach Schnellenberger do it and I was in awe to be a part of it with the teammates we had. It was an awesome thing to watch. I’ve been through all the transitions, to do that, for that long and not believe you’ve got a leader and it’s going to happen again."

FROM THE SPORTING NEWS:

Every once in a while it happens. In the midst of all that is wrong, something so right finds its way through.

Arkansas should be utterly embarrassed today at the very thought of Bobby Petrino. And absolutely giddy about Jeff Long.

At one point during Long’s press conference to announce that he, as athletic director at Arkansas, had fired Petrino, I stood up and clapped. In my living room, with my dog staring at me like I’d gone half crazy.

This is what college sports needs, where the madness finally turns and we all get off this ridiculous carousel of pandering and enabling and selling out for winning. Where—I know this will sound foreign to some of you—there are actually consequences for choices.

Where we’re not blaming others or looking for scapegoats or choosing the easy way or finding common ground or, for the love of God, excusing a grown man for shopping his son for $180,000.

In less than 30 minutes Jeff Long showed what Mark Emmert and the rest of the NCAA hasn’t been able to do in years: how to stand up and embrace accountability and responsibility.

Dallas Jackson
Senior Analyst

The state of Texas appears to have won the distinction for having the most Division I FBS scholarship football players as 371 signed Letters of Intent.

Florida, however, wins the bigger honor: It has the highest percentage of football players heading to a Division I FBS program.

The findings are part of the statistical analysis RivalsHigh does annually (and, we know, a few more signees are still coming in). This year, it shows that one of every 119 high school players in Florida signed a Division I FBS scholarship. That's far more impressive than Texas, where only one of every 455 players signed a Letter of Intent.

Florida, in fact, was one of just four states to have a ratio of less than 1-to-250 with Georgia coming in second (1 of every 194), Louisiana third (1 of every 214), and Alabama fourth (1 in 243).

In this ranking, Texas is behind the less heralded states of Hawaii and Utah. Of course, those states only combined to produce 37 recruits.

Texas is king in total number of players - it put some distance between itself and Florida (371 to 325). California (228), Georgia (165) and Ohio (159) are the only other states with more than 100 signees.

Vermont, Wyoming, Rhode Island, South Dakota and Maine were the only states that did not produce a single recruit. Four others produced just one, including Montana - where of the 4,632 kids playing high school football only Cody Carriger of Butte (Mont.) High committed to an FBS program and is headed to Oregon.

One would think that if it was your full-time JOB to cover the Miami Hurricanes that you would absolutely love your job. I mean how bad can it be to go to and write about sports events right? You might also think that they would know more than the average Hurricane fan on the street and maybe have some of their own thoughts or opinions on the team, players and coaches. Well what I have found in most cases is that they don't and they don't.
------
Not surprising when you see how weak the coverage is and consider that 2 of the beaters are yellow-bellied swamp lizards. However with all the media access and content available directly from the program, it is harder for them to produce something that us avid fans havent read, heard or watched already.

"If I were him I would lock down the CB position before the freashman get here in August"

Three things we learned this weekend

1. Either Florida is really struggling or LSU is finally living up its talent level.
2. The Pac-12 will rotate a "Flavor of the Week" hot team the rest of the season.
3. The Miami-Florida State series in two weeks just got a lot more interesting.

Team of the weekend: Miami

Wow. A sweep of North Carolina, which included two shutouts? Again, wow. About the only problem for the Hurricanes this weekend was the ground crew not covering the field as a monsoon hit the Coral Gables area on Saturday, delaying the start of the series' middle game. But storming three from the Tar Heels has now put the Canes on top of the Coastal Division of the ACC.

He always talked about how they did things in his day....well, he just happened to be on a team that was the best but not because of him. Now we are going from one annoying character to another. To me, Sileo is somebody I can go without listening.

Let me start off by saying I am in favor of freedom of speech. But being Cuban American myself, I can see why the community is in an uproar. He could have probably worded his thoughts in another manner but he also should have thought about where he was……hello. I was born in this country but my parents and grandparents who were very “well off” in Cuba came over with a suitcase and what they were wearing so I personally resent Fidel for that.

Ozzie used poor judgment but you can’t fault people for reacting the way they have been. Heck, this day in age has gotten so politically correct, they hardly show road runner cartoons anymore due to the nature of violence it displayed. This country still has hate (see the TM issues taking place in Sanford) and unfortunately, people need to be cautious especially when in the public. OK, I will get off my political high horse now…..GO CANES.

Let's face it the reporting genre has changed because of instant access to a multi media format...It's a buffet to choose what media to read, listen , type, text, tweet, Facebook or Google our Canes.
That as a given the print media reporters need to give us something we WANT to read about our 'Canes.
In depth retrospectives of our teams, players, Coaches..tid bits that we could enjoy but realize these guys are phenomenal athletes and Coaches but not much different than everyman.
Ideas are out there. The fans are open to articles, but this would take effort, work, digging, sweat, interiews, followup, travel, expenses, etc. etc..

Easier to pull it off the internet and post it with a byline.

This is our Reality and it is not going to change.

It is getting harder to be a die hard fan when you look for the meat in print articles, but all we get is "pink slime" many times.

Nevertheless we are 'Canes. We love our team and Coaches. We will always be Loyal to our Canes, and as we always say:
Go 'Canes.

There IT is right there.

Mephistopheles

Very nicely done last weekend on the diamond, but now this team has to prove they can take their show on the road. The same concerns are still there for me: Too many strikeouts, sloppy fielding on routine plays, too many strikeouts, lack of aggression on the bases, and TOO MANY STRIKEOUTS! (Yes, I'm screaming it this time)

How many rallies are we gonna waste with all these K's? Its painful to watch, especially with their refusal to swipe bases. They have 29 steals-near the bottom of the ACC. The last Championship team Miami had stole over 240! What happened?

The pitching, of course, has been sensational. Miami lacks big-time arms, so they need to pitch to contact. Hard to do with so many holes in the D, but they're doing a nice job of changing speeds and locating out pitches so far. I thought we'd miss B Rad and Suarez (IMO the 2 best arms on the team) and we may yet, but so far guys have stepped up. Can't afford any more attrition on the mound-or elsewhere for that matter.

Getting O'Brien back near 100% is a must to have any shot at a national seed. (Maybe Jimbo should just let him DH for the rest of the year since the new kid's filling in nicely.) Apart from the K's, I think our O has some depth. But, since we're just going station to station, the K's will stop us in our tracks.

I actually think we match-up well with FSU, and have reasonably high hopes for a series win. It remains necessary to take care of the lesser teams either way to grab the 2 seed in the ACC tourney.

BTW, they are compiling another monster group of commits. Unfortunately, its deja-vu all over again 'cause they're gonna get drafted high, leaving us in the same boat we've sailed for the past several years watching stars go straight to the Pro's. If we could keep one class in tact I think Miami would return to an elite program. We'll see.

Get out to the park-Go Canes!!!!!!!!!!!!

FROM ESPN:

Florida State held its second intrasquad scrimmage of the spring Monday.

Let's just say Jimbo Fisher is happy his team has two practices left.

"I thought we played very poorly on both sides," the Seminoles coach said. "I thought the first scrimmage was better than this one. On offense -- no consistency; had some not smart turnovers at times. On defense -- gave up a bunch of big plays, terrible on third down. At times both sides just dominated the other side."

Fisher said he does not think FSU is a good team right now, and he was disheartened by the lack of progress from the first scrimmage to the second.

The Seminoles practice again Wednesday and close out their spring season with their annual Garnet and Gold spring game at 4 p.m., ET Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium.

"It does," concern him, Fisher said of Monday's scrimmage. "It should get better, not worse. We need to take a look at why. We'll make some moves, make some adjustments; sit some guys down and play some other guys. There were some guys who did some good things, [but] not enough.

"Another thing I was disappointed on both sides of the ball was we had some poor penalties, too; some not very smart penalties. Penalties will cost you a game. We had a drive stopped on defense and get a hold and a facemask. Make a big play on offense and jump offside -- just silly things we haven’t been doing."

SOUP

Meph...the Canes are leading the ACC in men LOB and up until the UNC series had not pitched up to their talent level or pre-season hype. Way too many squandered opportunities and not enough TIMELY hitting. And yet they are STILL ranked #6 and leading their division of the ACC.

"Morris: Strong Arm and Experience

Posted by: SOUP | April 11, 2012 at 07:58 AM"

I'm pretty sure you can add up the minutes/snaps taken under center and Williams (!) would have more experience in games, now experience at the big boy level of FBS, obviously that's Morris hands down. Unless Morris makes a huge jump in his overall skill set as a QB, I'm more and more leaning toward Williams taking the job, there's a very weird Kelly/Dorsey 2.0 vibe going on in the player comparisons here.

I'll be down in Sunrise this Saturday SOUP, what's the plan of action looking like for the spring game, West 13 at 10:30 am? It's free to attend through the gates and parking too I think? I know it's posted on here somewhere but I wasn't paying attention as the NHL regular season wound down and kind of tuned it out but might have to take it in if I can since I've never been to the most glorified of all glorified practices at UM.

TheWhat

The problem with the traditional media outlets is they havent figured out how to monetize the Web. Most of their content is for free, and when the content isnt for free you can get that same information some where else. News outlets like the Washington Post, NY Times, Miami Herald. Time Magazine, etc have to focus (IMO) on the news before it becomes news and on analysis. The fact that the Miami Herald had no idea the Nevin Shapiro story was coming or that it even existed tells you a lot, that either the Herald doesn't have money to pay its writers to investigate or the reporters just don't want to investigate. Local reporters should have been the first to know about that slime ball and they should have been the ones contacting him in prison not someone from Yahoo who acted on a mere tip.

Jimbo just doesn't have it as a coach. Great recruiter but not a great team builder. He can recruit every 4 and 5 star "next big star" all he wants, but to me it seems like he recruits based on the hype of the player and not on his team's needs. Granted I don't know a tenth of what Jimbo knows about football, but the proof is in the pudding and his inablity to convert top 5 recruiting classes into a legit contender. They didn't have to win the NC last year, but to lose 4 games is inexcusable. Jimbo seems unable to get his team to move in the same direction.

I will say it again, by the end of this year, Jimbo will be on the hot seat. FSU fans can stroke themselves during national signing day all they want, but at the end of the day they will have a team of individuals that cannot or will not play with cohesion.

1. Can I quote U on that? if he loses 3 or more games this year then YES I would agree. They will clearly be favored to win most if not ALL of the games they play this season.

2. I think even FSWho fans are beginning to think this way.
