This weekend your Miami Hurricanes traveled all the way up to the State Capital in Tallahassee to play a three game series against their arch rival and undoubtedly their most heated ACC foe in the Florida State Seminoles.
Well, on second thought, Miami probably should have just stayed home.
FSU took their tomahawk chop right to the head and heart of this Hurricane team by beating UM pitchers Eric Erickson and Eric Whaley as the Seminoles easily won the first two games of the series by the scores of 11-2 on Friday night and 6-1 on Saturday.
If Miami thinks they can go on the road and score less than three runs and win against tough ACC competition then they are sadly mistaken.
Yes, we know that the Hurricanes are in Tallahassee without star catcher Peter O'Brien in the line-up due to a fractured bone in his wrist but still they definitely have to have better run production than that to have any chance at all at rowdy Dick Howser Stadium.
Talk about taking it on the chin, the UM starters and relievers got smacked around by the FSU sluggers worse than a pinata at a Hialeah backyard birthday party.
The Hurricanes will try to prevent the dreaded series sweep by the Seminoles on Sunday by throwing Steven Ewing (4-0) against Scott Sitz (2-2). Ewing will have to bear down and do what Erickson and Whaley could not do in going against the high powered and highly dreaded Seminoles line-up.
If Miami does not score more than three runs once again then it could be another long day for head coach Jim Morris, pitching coach JD Arteaga and hitting coach Gino DiMare.
Of course in spite of the outcome of the game we can always find some sunshine in the midst of the gloomy cloud cover that obscures the game.
There are Canes fan every where we go and we enjoy meeting fans like these that we met and celebrated with on this trip up to the State Capitol.
And after all that travel and attending the game, all we can say is:
LET'S GO CANES!

I've been calling for the head of Coach Morris for 3 years now ... esp. after seeing what Sully has done up at UiF and how Morris has been Sully's b*tch
Why does it surprise anyone at how the baseball team plays?
They're lucky to get out of a Regional
Have to do more than just bring back Gino - he's only 1/3rd of the reason Morris won CWS
If you don't agree with that, then you don't know anything about Canes baseball
Lazer. Gino. Turtle.
Without those 3 and what they brought to the program, Morris doesn't win the titles
This will be the 4th year I've been preaching this

Looks like the Canes have found an opponent, the week before the UF game in 2013
UM announces 3-game series with FAU in football
The University of Miami and Florida Atlantic University have scheduled a three-game football series that will begin in the fall of 2013..
Miami will host FAU at Sun Life Stadium on Aug. 31, 2013 to open the series. UM will travel to FAU Stadium in 2015 and host the Owls in 2016. Dates for the 2015 and 2016 games will be announced at a later date.
The Owls and Hurricanes have never met on the field, but share a lineage with former coach Howard Schnellenberger, who retired after the 2011 season with a 158-151-3 career record.
“I’m thrilled to death that FAU and UM are going to face-off on the gridiron,” said Schnellenberger. “It is part of the big plan and may develop into a wonderful addition to South Florida football.”

I also don't want to hear any typical excuse about "youth" or any of that crap
FSU ran a Frosh pitcher in Game 1 and Miami rolled out their ace
What happened?
The tuition excuse is lame as hell as well
Stanford. Rice. Cost just as much as Miami and they've been pretty damn successful since 2001. They're both in states that they have to compete with a hell of lot more schools within that state than Miami does. Cali and Texas? Who else does Miami have to compete with in recruiting within the state? FSU, UiF ... you're telling me that UCF, USF, UNF, UWF, JU, Stetson, FAU, FIU, BCC, FAMU are all robbing the Canes of talent?
Why not then also include UTampa, Eckerd, St.Thomas, FGCU, Rollins, Florida Southern, HCC, St. Pete College, Embry Riddle as well
Too bad George Horton is getting Phil Knight's money at Oregon
I would've taken him over Morris from the get go when Morris was hired from GTech

FSU 6, UM baseball 1
Miami Hurricanes fall to Florida State Seminoles behind four errors
Patrik Nohe The Miami Herald
The Hurricanes could not overcome FSU’s strong pitching after falling behind early thanks to four errors in the first four innings.
Defense has been the Achilles heel for the Miami Hurricanes all season.
Entering Saturday, Miami was ranked 11th out of 12 teams in the ACC in fielding percentage. But after four errors in the first four innings during a 6-1 loss to No. 2 Florida State, the Hurricanes may now be challenging for last.
You feel kind of helpless sitting in the dugout with four errors early in the game, Miami coach Jim Morris said. No question it cost us. None of those runs should have scored in that big inning if we played good defense.
Whaley would only give up the four runs, of which just one was earned, but more Hurricane mistakes extended the third and fourth innings, sending Whaley well over 100 pitches and out of the game with the loss after just four frames.
I thought Whaley threw [well]. He went after it, he pitched hard, he played hard, Morris said. We’ve just got to play better behind him.
We’ve just got to swing the bat better and play better defense, Morris said. We’re trying everything [to get the bats going]. We’re hitting more. We’re hitting less. One thing I know is you’ve just got to keep working.
Miami and Florida State finish up their series Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

CaneRock - really appreciate it my man, thank you sincerely .. needed some time away for a bit. Family first, always. Good to be back - can't wait for the new Cane pups to arrive on campus and get out there
Always appreciate 86 and how he handles things within our "cane family" on here as well
Montreal-Cane - beyond frustrating to see the Cane dirt dogs not playing like we've been accustomed to while Kevin O'Sullivan up at UiF keeps his machine rolling and turning it into a monster in the short amount of time he's been there. Then we see the Canes getting absolutely handled by FSU up there. You really look at what the Canes have done the past few years when it comes to beating legitimate teams as opposed to mediocre to less than mediocre teams within the ACC and it just makes you shake your head. No real reason either that the Canes should be losing to lesser out of conference teams either - those are the teams you should be taking glorified batting practice against and being overly aggressive in the pitching department against
Change needs to happen. It's not like other teams across the nation don't lose recruits to the draft either. I can't see why a group of kids that were good enough to play for Miami .. can't play like Miami .. if that makes sense
Posted by: Six | April 22, 2012 at 05:41 AM
Yeah, I'm with the group on the whole baseball issue. If we think So. FL is a hotbed of H.S. football talent, I would dare say it's even hotter for H.S. baseball talent.
We should be dominating the nation, but instead, we're not developing the talent we have in our own backyard, and struggle in a mediocre league.
(Player development... where have I heard that before, eh Six?)
Anyway, if baseball gets their act together in time to make the big show in Omaha, I'm all in... but if they don't, I'm not losing any sleep over it.
Now FOOTBALL on the other hand... I DO lose sleep over! LOL

The game may have passed Morris by and a change may need to be made by the end of the season, that's obvious to me.
What I don't get is all the uproar over some twitter bad language, yet we have people on here calling Morris a beyotch. People were emailing the president, the coaches, the AD over a stupid twitter hoe comment. Morris may not be a very good coach right now but it's ok to call him names, but some anonymous person gets called a B and the world is going to end.
I believe in free speech but I'm not a big fan of hypocrisy. You can't condemn one without condemning the other.

Calling Morris a b--ch is ok. But it's not ok if a player uses similar language on twitter. Please explain the difference
Posted by: CaneAddict | April 22, 2012 at 01:01 PM
CGNC - I'm hoping that Miami is cheap when it comes to money for their assistants, b/c that will help explain why Morris had who he had next to him after the last of the big 3 (Turtle, Lazer, Gino) left
B/c if they aren't cheap and Morris went and got who he got to be on his bench and help coach/recruit - then that's bad
Want to know what Kevin O'Sullivan has sitting on his bench next to him to help instruct/recruit/develop the Crocs?
Don Norris - Volunteer Assistant Coach
* 6 years of coaching in the Cape Cod League, 2 years of coaching in the Northeast Collegiate League .. 19 players from his 3 teams he coached were drafted, with at least 1 player in the first 10 rounds
Craig Bell - Assistant Coach
* Associate Pro Scout for the Cincinnati Reds for 7 years, Supervising Area Scout for the Seattle Mariners for 7 years
Quote from O'Sullivan on Bell
"His instincts as a coach and an evaluator are solid .. He has on the field teaching knowledge on all aspects of the game .. We have to be able to evaluate the right player and not go after the guy that’s going to sign (professionally) and not show up. He has the right mentality to make sure these kids have the right makeup we’re looking for and have the toughness that we need to win in the Southeastern Conference."
Brad Weitzel - Assistant Coach
* Florida Area Scout for the Minnesota Twins for 16 years, Coach for the Minnesota Twins Instructional League for 5 years, Coach for the minor league Gulf Coast League Twins for 2 years
So, the Crocs two main assistant coaches have a combined 30 years of scouting experience for MLB teams .. 7 years of actually coaching an MLB minor league organization
Even the damn assistant volunteer coach managed in the prestigious Cape Cod League for 6 years and his teams won .. and won a lot
Canes have absolutely nothing on that. Nothing.
I'm wondering how much Gino is making and what JD is making as well. Gino has to want to rip his hair out watching the Canes teams from the past how many years?
Good to be back, doing a lot better ... and why are you still up in North Cackalacka and not moved to Florida yet, ha

Addict...OK for U I will state the obvious since it appears necessary: Six is an anonymous blogger who is not an identified scholarship player at the University of Miami who is by contract and direct association representing UM.
Six represents Six.
All UM players represent The U.
Private citizens do not have the same repsonsibility as do those individuals who respesent an instituion of higher education such as the University of Miami. Those who do represent any University rightfully should be held to higher standards of conduct in public forums than anonymous private citizens.
And as U know Twitter reaches a MUCH larger audience and therefore should meet eve a higher level of scrutiny because it is much more of a "public" forum than the comments section of this privately run blog.
NOW BACK TO UM SPORTS...
Posted by: SOUP | April 22, 2012 at 01:58 PM
Ohio_Cane - appreciate it my man
A lot of things are put into perspective, priorities are changed a little with more emphasis on some things more than others
If you're a family first type of person, then it makes you even more so of one. The calls made to your relatives each week, esp. the elders in your family, are increased. Emails or even texts are nice, but nothing like hearing their voice and them hearing yours as well b/c you just never know and it's worse to regret what you could've said or done when you had the chance than anything in the world
Damn, didn't mean to get into some semi-Hallmark type thinking right there. That's kinda depressing in a way for this blog, bahaha

Six...Hargreaves just got offers (read: bags of cash) from 'Bama and LSU. Rivals says he was favoring UF before that. Sounds like he may be SEC bound?
Posted by: SOUP | April 22, 2012 at 02:07 PM
86 - I can send you a link to a playoff game I shot of my boy RJenkins from this past year, at the end of a long TD run, he goes to sit on the bench and puts up the "U" for the camera
Hargreaves loves Miami. Loves them. Has since he was a little kid. Like we talked about on the phone, it might come down to how the Canes sell him on possibly being part of what could be potentially one of the best secondaries in the nation
When I use the word potentially, that is banking on THoward, DBush, RJenkins, TFinnie, ACrawford, etc. playing how we think they can and have shown
I know this isn't a popular opinion, but, going to the SEC - esp. Bama or yes, UiF - is more appealing .. it just is. Even when Urban was at UiF, their D was good, it is what won them both titles and what they leaned on. UiF's defense was good last year, and is going to get better under Muschamp. Now, imagine if you're a kid (who isn't a crazy Cane fan like all of us on here) and you are getting a lot of love from a team like Bama, LSU, UiF - that's beyond flattering
I don't think Hargreaves family will go the Patrick Johnson .. errrr .. Patrick Peterson route at all. Pops Hargreaves just doesn't seem the type. The type being, shady.
To come to the Canes, Hargreaves will have to let his love since his little kid days shine through and guide him ... just like Chick (even though it was too easy to know that Chick would be a Cane, seeing how it's literally in his DNA). Also, just how good of a salesman Golden can be - not Kehoe .. Golden.
Don't forget about another kid I've been pimping for a couple of years now - Leon McQuay. I'll take him in less than a heartbeat ... Chick is all over him ... bad thing is, so is Dante Fowler

In other words, Morris FALTERING club should've added another insurance run or two or the bullpen should have come through during the nine innings. That's all.
Nonetheless, the Hurricanes will be ONE of the 64 clubs in the N.C.A.A Tournament and it's any die hard Miami fan's guess on whether Morris SINKING team will host a regional come May. Eh

BY SUSAN MILLER DEGNAN
After a record 14 consecutive seasons with at least one player chosen in the first round of the NFL Draft, the University of Miami was saved from totally whiffing in 2009 by low-profile linebacker Spencer Adkins — the third selection in the sixth round by the Atlanta Falcons.
“It’s all about hard work and dedication,” Adkins, who has 15 NFL tackles in three seasons, said that day. “I’m a good dude and good things happen to good people."
Sometimes, yes.
Sometimes, no.
The newest version of the NFL Draft, Thursday through Saturday at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, will undoubtedly include a flurry of Miami Hurricanes at one point or another — though most, if not all, of those Canes are expected to be drafted the final two days.
Last April, after a 7-6 season, eight Canes were drafted. Now, after another substandard campaign (6-6) in 2011, as many as nine — maybe more — Canes could be celebrating by the end of the weekend.
“Nine guys from Miami?” ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said when asked by The Miami Herald on a national conference call his assessment of some of them. “I have to sit here and count.”
11 up?
McShay then went on to name 11 Hurricanes — some of them “on the fringe” or “sleepers,” such as tight end Chase Ford, defensive tackle Micanor Regis, receiver LaRon Byrd and defensive end Adewale Ojomo; other more definites, though lower in the process, such as defensive tackle Marcus Forston and offensive lineman Brandon Washington; others whose projections cover a hefty range, such as defensive end Olivier Vernon and receivers Travis Benjamin and Tommy Streeter; and the more solid mainstays of running back Lamar Miller and linebacker Sean Spence.
In all, he said he wouldn’t be shocked if nine Hurricanes were drafted, but that “a safe bet is seven.”
Miller has been projected to go highest, anywhere from the start to end of the second round, with Spence also projected by some to go in the second round.
“He belongs in the late second round — maybe Green Bay, New York Giants, teams looking for more depth and potential from a big-play, home run hitter,” McShay said of Miller. “His speed — it’s all about cut and go. He’s a guy who heats up more than any running back in this class. … The 1.53-second 10-yard split is the fastest first 10 yards of any running back.”

If boi was so sure he would bust a 4.3 for scouts he had a perfect chance at proday and when asked by many of the teams boi said no, he would stand on his combine time. End of story, next lol
