A little help is exactly what your Miami Hurricanes need from the North Carolina Tar Heels tonight when they play the North Carolina State Wolfpack at 7 PM in the final contest of the ACC pool play to determine which team will earn the right to play in the conference championship game on Sunday.
It can't get any more simple than this: If UNC beats NCST tonight, Miami plays for the Atlantic Coast Conference title tomorrow.
Miami already did their part on Friday night by beating Wake Forest 6-3 to move their ACC tourney record to 2-1. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes their one loss came to NCST in the opening game on Wednesday night. That is when Miami blew a one run lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning and walked in the winning run to lose the game in heart-wrenching fashion.
To sit here in my Canespace T-shirt and think that IF the Hurricanes could have held onto that precious lead and closed out the game against the Wolfpack on Wednesday they would already be 3-0 and guaranteed a spot in the ACC title game on Sunday.
But these days nothing seems to come easy for your Miami Hurricanes. Yet still, I don't think we are really asking for too much from the Tar Heels to beat the Wolfpack, are we?
How about a little help please?
uno....

I was in LA for the '03 final against the real Mickey Mouse franchise and it barely moved the needle then around town because all I knew were ticked off Kings fans who couldn't stand Orange County riding a hot goalie to boring upsets, now the shoe is most definitely on the other foot but the needle is going to be shot off the charts especially if the road steamroller isn't dented in the first two games.
I'd bet you had more people picking LA for the finals in October than in February but I do remember a Lightning scout on a Devils radio intermission interview late in the year saying he had Jersey as his East playoffs dark-horse this year and they had won six in a row heading into the playoffs so the potential was simmering for them if you weren't blinded by PR hype. It wouldn't be the worst thing for the copycats around the league to mimic both team's 200 foot fore-checking style but the differences for me between the two lie in the fact that Kovalchuck's scored more goals than anyone else since he entered the league, Parise's in a contract year and wants to go where he has a chance to win a cup (sounds like his current locker or the one Kovalchuck turned down that the Kings offered him two years ago are your choices then Zack), and one goalie is the best in the world if you live in the city he plays in while the other is the best ever to lace them up and won't be consumed by the moment no matter what. I'd put the current Kings in front of the Ducks but behind the Avs, Wings and Stars on NJ's list of historic Cup foes and this Devil's team is better than the '95 and '03 champs talent wise, so unless LA's got a hidden equivalent to Borque, Blake and Foote stashed away somewhere and Quick emerges from a phone-booth as end of the line Roy, it's Hollywood ending rewrite time for the best in the west.
CGNC, also, don't forget Gagne possibly being added to the list of Philly cast-offs trying to beat the team that ousted them in dominating fashion from the playoffs compounding brotherly love fans' anguish. I haven't listened to a LP song since Hybrid Theory was remixed as an album honestly.

FSU LOSES to Virginia 7-0 and finishes the ACC tourney at 0-3.

@SaveUMFootball: Canes Baseball Update: It's now 4-0 UNC! It's looking great for Miami, unless there is some kind of meltdown by UNC during bottom of 12th.

CEO, CGNC, & OGIV - Thanks for sharing the great stories about how you each became interested in hockey.
I can't seem to pinpoint exactly when I became a fan, but the earliest memory I have is watching the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament as a six year old. Much like football in TX, it is huge here and to me one of the greatest tournaments out there. You cant' help but become a fan.
I am looking forward to Wed as I believe the Devils vs. Kings matchup is really one of the more interesting you could have. Careful OGIV, the Kings do have talent at all positions. I agree the Devils do as well, but the x factor could be the coaching and mindset of each team. Sutter gets the most out of his players and has them paying attention to the little things.
I have to say that I hope NJ wins as selfishly I want Parise to have raised the Cup and have him come home to play with the Wild. It's a long shot, but stranger things have happened.

By the way Pre - did you know that the U has a hockey team?
Raize, I know the Canes play was just funny hearing the news here get it WRONG - LOL

### Teammates’ eyebrows were raised when running back Duke Johnson and cornerback Tracy Howard, both five-star recruits, arrived on UM’s campus a week ago. Maurice Hagens saw enough in one week to call Johnson “amazing.”
“Wow,” Eduardo Clements said of Johnson. “Last week, in 7-on-7s, he caught a pass, made a move, ran for a touchdown, and I’m like, ‘Damn.’ And Tracy is everything everyone makes him out to be – the footwork, breaking on the ball.” Several Hurricanes like what they have seen of receivers Malcolm Lewis and Robert Lockhart.
### Former players love how they have been welcomed back by Al Golden, but when Clements saw Clinton Portis on campus last week, “I was scared to say something. He’s a guy I look up to.” So good guy teammate Mike James got Clements on the phone with Portis, who counseled him about sharing carries with two other backs – the likely scenario for James, Clements and Johnson this fall.

GT 4, UM 0 first inning with Miami at bat.
GT loaded the bases with no outs against Salas and then hit three singles, UM lucky to get out of the ining without even more damage.
Wnty the heck did they start Salas instead of Erickson? He has had three days rest???
Posted by: CEO | May 27, 2012 at 12:30 PM
Fieger with a single drive in Carey.
GT 4, UM 1 Canes still at bat with 2 outs.
O'Brien flie lout to CF with 2 on, end of the first 4-1 Jackets lead.

The ACC title game is on ESPN2.
GT loads the bases AGAIN in the top of the second, but only get one run to make it 5-1 with Canes coming to bat.
Salas OUT of the game after throwing BP to GT and Kosak on the mound for UM now.

O'Brien 0-3 with 2 runners on each time he has been up. he converts ONE of those chances and UM is tied or in the lead.
GT 6, UM 4 top of the sixth.
Posted by: CEO | May 27, 2012 at 02:18 PM
Lead-off home-run to pull to within one in the bottom of the six? Once Morris yanked the overwhelmed sophomore starter, the hot tourney-long run the Jackets were on has petered out.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | May 27, 2012 at 02:32 PM
Theres only two guys in Miami that deserve to be heard. Dwayne Wade and Lebron... they are showing what winning is all about. Those two took control of that last series. The rest is all talk.

GT 6, UM 5 after Broad spanks one over the LF fence. Going to the top of the 7th, GT at the plate.

Anyone who says to fire Jim Morris should be shot on site. Who else are you going to get who is even in the same area code of a coach as jim morris. The guy just led the us to host for the 24th time, a championship berth in the acc which in the end is meaningless for miami baseball, and did w/ our top hitter out for most of acc play. Some of you do not have a clue and it's scary.
Posted by: MattInNY | May 27, 2012 at 04:18 PM
Dont worry. People will come on here now and start screaming about Morris and how bad he and the team sucks. This is ridiculous and ignorant. We are hosting another regional and got to the title game with w/a lot less talent than the gators who some on here just seem to love. Based on results and talent, Morris has done better than Sully do far. Fire Sully lol

Some of you do not have a clue and it's scary.
Posted by: MattInNY | May 27, 2012 at 04:18 PM
There IT is right there.
But at the same time U have to admit not CWS for the last three years, declining performance from the team overall both offensively and defensively and a strange choice for the ACC championship game.
It's not we have 10 ACC crowns or have won it LATELY (2008) so a win today would have been big, really BIG.
Posted by: CEO | May 27, 2012 at 05:49 PM
Mike Martin is a huge tool. There's more of a rivalry in baseball between us and FSWho. Martin would have been fired a long time ago if he was coaching in Coral Gables. They have big talent and are highly ranked and regarded every year. How many CWS titles does he have to show for it?
As far as our team, it will probably take a small miracle to get us to the CWS this year. The talent is just not there as it is now. It will take something like a SF performance of a couple of years ago. Going from having an average regular season to getting hot in the playoffs.

Miami lost to the University of Florida in the NCAA tournament each of the last three seasons -- whether in the Regional or Super Regional round.
The fact UM (36-21) was named one of the 16 host sites for the regional round came as a bit of a surprise despite being ranked 10th in RPI. Baseball America Magazine and ESPN both projected the Hurricanes as a No. 2 seed -- and likely headed to Gainesville.
UM is one of five ACC schools to serve as hosts.
