canes baseball with an 8-6 victory at Ga. Tech. 34-18 overall. With a good showing in the ACC tourney hopefully we can avoid another trip to gainesville for a regional.

4-Real

Kevin Olson WAS rated the # 4 qb on scout earlier this year. Once it became clear that he was all but a Cane lock he fell to # 7

UMike

You know whats funny...everyone knows that the star system is rated by the amount/quality of the offers a player has...but it looks like that don't count if a player commits to Miami early lol..Keith Bryant has 29 offers according to Rivals and those include Miami, Auburn, Florida,, FSU, UGA, LSU, OSU, Oklahoma, USC and more. If he was not committed, he would be a 4-star.

TonyCane

No kidding. Kevin Olsen's star rating is about to fall more quickly John Carter's week over week box office gross.

HawaiiCane

Congrats to Kevin Olsen! So has anyone checked Rivals? I'm thinking he should drop to about the 30th best QB and 3*... LOL!

4-Real

WAKE THE HELL UP!!!!

TJL

I think I found what Olsen said about uf-welcome to the rivalry!! lol:

When asked if his brother, NFL star tight end and Miami alumn Greg Olsen, influenced his decision, Kevin categorically stated "I evaluated each school on its own merits. An offer from a big football school like Florida might seem tempting, but when you look at the whole picture, there's no comparison. The U is academically superior. It is in a diverse international city with culture, excitement, corporations and many other things. The campus, well there's no comparison, from the smaller more personalized classes, to the tradition and cachet of the U, it's all there. It really is a family. I suppose if you are planning done future in a rural career, farming, sharecropping, or maybe the mobile home industry that you could go there"

UM lands big-time quarterback: Yeremiah Bells signs with Jets

UM landed a key verbal commitment for the 2013 class, when Wayne Hills (N.J.) High quarterback Kevin Olsen called Al Golden Friday morning and told him he is going to Miami.

Olsen is the brother of Carolina Panthers and former UM tight end Greg Olsen.

"Kevin always felt very strong about Miami," said his father and high school coach, Chris Olsen. "He had some good choices. Last week or two, he indicated to my wife and me that he wanted to go to Miami. My wife and I said, 'Let's make sure.' On Wednesday night, he wanted to call coach Golden. I wanted him to make sure [and take another day]."

Chris Olsen said Kevin "bought into Miami getting back to being Miami. He built up a great relationship with Jedd Fisch. We've had a good relationship with Al. The offense that Jedd is running fits Kevin. Jedd's background with the NFL is a plus with the quarterback position. They have a beautiful campus, outstanding academic school. All those things factored in. Greg was happy to hear" of his brother's commitment but never put any pressure on his brother.

Chris Olsen also said Al Golden was happy to hear the news, and he does not expect UM to sign another quarterback in the 2013 class. Though his oral commitment is non-binding, Chris Olsen said his son will DEFINITELY go to UM...

Pre83 - My condolences go out to you and your family. I lost my father in February to the same disease so I know what you are going thru all too well.

TheWhat

Pre83 sorry to hear about your father. May he rest in peace and may you find joy in your memories of him.

In all sports and dare I say in all professions there are few as corrupt as the men that run college football. it's not that they make money off of football, it's that they make money off the backs of college kids who mostly come from lower middle class to poor families and refuse to compensate them in the least bit. They make money off their natural gifts, they make money off their jerseys, off their image, off their sweat and hard work and in their greed refuse to return any of that money back to them.
Why not give them a share after they leave school. Money from jersey sales, video game sales, tv deals, etc. They hide behind the veil of amateur sports yet get paid like they run NFL Lite. And if you are caught breaking their rules watch out cause they will come at you like a lioness protecting her cubs.
Why they refuse to have the top seeded teams play home games for the playoff scenario is beyond me. Why force the fan base to travel. Reward the fan base of the top seeded team.

TheWhat

Umike you already got tickets to the GT game?

Pre83

I know I haven't posted in quite some time, but my father passed away last week after a six month battle with cancer (lymphoma) and I have not had the time nor sadly the desire.

I have a great Canes related memory with my father as he took me to see my first Canes game after being a fan for just a year. We flew to Chicago from Minneapolis and then drove to South Bend to see Kosar lead the Canes over the Fighting Irish in Jimmy Johnson's first season.

Until the Canes last played the Gators, that was the only time I had ever seen the Canes play in person.

Pre83

This article is Exhibit A for what is wrong with big time college football.

What is even more incredible is the way that no matter how obvious or well known, the most high ranking men will deny what is so blantantly obvious to most people.

RIP Paul Dee...

Former Canes QBs, coaches, many others mourn Paul Dee's passing at Thursday funeral

University of Miami leaders, distinguished local businessmen, two great Canes quarterbacks and three generations of Hurricanes football coaches were among those who gathered at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Coral Gables Thursday morning to mourn the death and celebrate the life of a good man – former UM athletic director Paul Dee.

Dee’s sister, Catherine, spoke of how her brother “had a heart full of love. Humility, sense of humor and aspirations to make the institution he served great were the hallmarks of his life.”

Dee and his wife, Cathy Zuckerman Dee, were supposed to be on a cruise to Italy this week. But Dee underwent surgery for tongue cancer last week, took a turn for the worse in ensuing days, and died last Saturday night at 65.

Among those in attendance at the funeral: former Hurricanes coaches Randy Shannon, Butch Davis and Howard Schnellenberger, former quarterbacks Bernie Kosar and Steve Walsh, UM president Donna Shalala, former UM president Tad Foote, FIU and former UM athletic director Pete Garcia and Orange Bowl CEO Eric Poms.

Davis, who was hired by Dee, said after the funeral that Dee “was a terrific guy and deep thinker. He was a great sounding board, never made a knee jerk reaction. I am very grateful to Paul for giving me the opportunity. I learned a great deal from him about managing crises and adversity.”
Dee served as UM’s general counsel, then took over as athletic director in 1993 and held the job until 2008. He taught classes on campus the past few years and was set to retire June 1.

In an on-campus ceremony afterward, Shalala said Dee “was a man of many facets and talents – to many, a wise and trusted adviser, a dear friend. He was a class act. His was a life of integrity and purpose…. He built a legendary athletic program. His legacies are around us: BankUnited Center, [renovations] to Mark Light Field…. He was a true champion for our university and communitry.”

Shalala said the only time she ever heard Dee curse was after the regrettable pass interference call against Miami in the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State, which cost UM a sixth national title.

Shalala recalled the university’s move from the Big East to the ACC, which “turned out to be more complicated than Paul advised me.”

When the Big East filed a lawsuit, Dee gathered necessary e-mails and other correspondence. When he asked Shalala why she hadn’t saved any of that information, Shalala cracked, “I worked for Clinton. They told us not to collect anything!”

Now that you mention it, Deboer was the coach in south Florida up until last year while Canespace was forging a legacy as an internet sports blogging institution with not one, but two, highly prized pieces of apparel for its loyal readership to obtain, maybe he's got it saved in his bookmarks from then?

I've now decided that the Devils have to win, if only so I can watch Tortorella go into complete humbug mode with the media to escalating hilarious results. Maybe John can call Al for some presser pointers after they get ousted?

It's May 17th - that means it's time for High School Football Spring Jamborees

Some kids that Canes fans should take an interest in - and whose games I'll be hanging on the sidelines for

- Ryan Green playing against Indian Rocks Christian on Friday

- Maybe Caanan Brown (LB '14) playing against Hernando on Friday

- Maybe Corey Martinez (OL '14) playing against Crystal River

Next week is when the majority of Hillsborough County schools play

- Jordan Sherit, Nigel Harris vs. Blake HS.

- VHargreaves3 vs. Tampa Bay Tech (Maurice Hagens alma mater)

- Leon McQuay3, Alvin Bailey vs. Plant City HS

- Travis Johnson, Vincent Jackson vs. Newsome HS (Xavier Hines, Cameron Ruff as well vs. Newsome)

- Austin Roberts, Paris Bostick, Mitchell Wright, Richey Klepal, Brenden Kellum vs. Leto HS

Some other news - Chase Litton hurt his hand pretty bad in practice, some people thought it was broken, his dad said it was just really bruised and he probably won't play in their Spring Jamboree vs. Tampa Bay Tech HS

Raize- Disney makes their money by charging everyone double what you would pay on the other cruise lines. I've never gone on a cruise (and to be honest I'm not all that crazy about this trip, but the rest of the family is), but friends who go tell me told me that.

raizecane

JW - I was not aware that Disney would allow that since buying beer / alcohol is such a money maker for cruise lines.

j.w.

Thanks, raize- Disney is actually pretty good about bringing beer, I think we have to pay them to stock it for me, but they let you bring beer. My biggest concerns is drinking skunky beer that gets too warm, so annoying when you think you're getting a nice, refreshing cold one only to get something that wasn't stored right.

I was introduced to Yuengling about 5 years ago by a friend who has since passed away. Even to this day, whenever I order one, I raise my glass (or bottle) to him.

JW - if you are going on a cruise, you might want to think about bringing alcohol instead of beer. Not sure how you will be able to sneak beer in unless u open it and the poor it into another container.

BTW - Yuengling is the oldest brewery in the USA.

Miami will be facing a seventh-seeded Tar Heel team (24-6) that narrowly escaped their regional final against Arizona, outlasting a Wildcat comeback attempt and winning, 4-2.
In their regular season meeting, the Hurricanes fell to UNC in a tight 4-3 decision, with UM's Gabriela Mejia, Anna Bartenstein and Lina Lileikite earning singles victories.

TX WR J'Mon Moore considering UM:

Missouri City (TX) Elkins High School WR J'Mon Moore is a Missouri commitment.

But he says he's also giving serious consideration to the Hurricanes.

"I have a decent interest level in Miami," he said. "I'm considering Miami for sure. I like a lot about the school, the environment. I first started liking Miami in the 1990s, when they were a really hyped school. My dad was a big fan, so I was raised up watching them a lot when they had Ray Lewis and the whole crazy the U thing. That's what drove me to them more."

Moore lists a Hurricane scholarship offer and says he plans to visit the school at some point this summer or fall.

"Me being recruited by them, it just makes me more interested and I want to learn more about it so I'm planning to visit," Moore said.

Moore currently lists 13 offers and says "I made a commitment to Missouri, but I'm still pretty wide open to everybody."

So what would Miami have to show him to pull even with Missouri?

"Just show me the campus," Moore said. "If I feel Miami is the better fit for me and I can showcase my talent much better at Miami, then Miami would take the lead."

Moore finished his junior season with 30 receptions for 737 yards and eight touchdowns.

Alright, Floridians, tell me, is Yeungling Lager beer any good? If it gets warm does it taste awful. I'm going on a Disney cruise soon and that's what they recommended I buy ahead of time. My lasting memory of beer in Florida (from 22 years ago) is that most of it tastes awful due to how they stored it when I was there (in the heat, never kept cold until consumed). Of course back then Budweiser, Busch, Miller Lite, etc. were expensive on my budget. :)
