The University of Miami women's tennis team will be making its seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 against ACC rival North Carolina Friday at 7 p.m. at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The 10th-seeded Canes (20-4) advanced to the third round after dispatching UNF and Utah by 4-0 scores in the tourney's first two rounds respectively. Miami will be facing a seventh-seeded Tar Heel team (24-6) that narrowly escaped their regional final against Arizona, outlasting a Wildcat comeback attempt and winning, 4-2.
In their regular season meeting, the Hurricanes fell to UNC in a tight 4-3 decision, with UM's Gabriela Mejia, Anna Bartenstein and Lina Lileikite earning singles victories.

Each sqaud features a pair of ranked doubles teams, the Canes No. 1 duo of Melissa Bolivar and Liat Zimmermann are currently ranked 20th, while Mejia and Lileikite currently sit at No. 76. The Heel's pair of Shinann Featherston and Lauren McHale are ranked in the Top 5 at No. 4 and Tessa Lyons and Haley Hemm are 81st.

Sota...yes your shirt, all of the shirts that are owed, will be 2012 version.

We are going with WHITE for a FIRST and BLACK for MAJOR contributions.

U gotta earn the black shirt!

CEO

Sota...here U go, direct from DA SKREETZ:

1. Someone askin bout where Vernon Davis will be showin out? Tne boi is a CB without a doubt but does have some serious slot WR game to him. Miami fans know how Al and Fisch love them toyz on that O side.

2. If a ballah has the skillz to catch a 5 yarder and go 80 they goin to get looked at in practice. Fisch dont mind the deep ball, he just da#n sure wants ballahs that can go short and bust it long. Sh$# he aint even worried bout breakin tackles he wants breakin ankles and gone for 6.

Felipe

^That's what I like to hear.

Remember Whippleball? Exact bleeping opposite sh@* going on around UM. Lob some limp noodled passes into 4 North Carolina dbacks. Thank you, Whipple.

Jimmy Johnson, favorite coach of all time, made me become a Canes fan when he left Stillwater and we left with him ... except to DeLand, not Coral Gables

The days of Thurman Thomas, Leslie O'Neil, Rusty Hilger, Earnest Anderson, etc. at Okie State .. ya, Jimmy upgraded justtttt a little bit. Not that those guys were bad, pretty damn good, but instead of just having 4 good players on his team, he had 10 times that

Six

Whipple threw the INTs or under threw the passes in that UNC game?

Blame goes all around. Just glad it's all gone now

Felipe

He put the player in that position while Fish took him out of it and now he's signed with the Eagles. So, yes, Whipple deserves blame.

CEO

Blame goes all around. Just glad it's all gone now.

SOOOOO GLAD U decided to do this!!!!

Now.... How to earn the BLACK shirt....

Six

Iggles fans probably not too happy with which Miami Hurricanes have come their way since Jerome Brown

Got love for Antonio Dixon, that kid has a good story. As long as Brandon Washington is a guard, think he'll be fine

As for the others - Jerome McDougle, Jamaal Green, Chris T. Jones, Craig Erickson, Matt Patchan, Jacory Harris, Chase Ford?

Eeeessshh

Philly had to be wondering if they could return all those guys within 30 to 90 days if they kept their receipts

CEO

Now.... How to earn the BLACK shirt....

Awesome!!

Also, I always thought it was "In like Flint"? Interesting lol

Ohio_Cane

I just looked it up... Apparently it can be both, but "In like Flynn" came first from how easily the actor Errol Flynn could get women into bed. Later from the movie In Like Flint, where the main character was a super spy and could "sneak in" places very easily

See what U can learn by reading Canespace?!? Lol

Ohio_Cane

OGV, stupid penalty by Bernier when they're up 3-2 IN NY and in a series where Gary Bettman's whistle is louder than the refs who are already in on the NY/LA Cup Finals scenario.

Hope they don't pay for it

LMAO! Well played 4-R.

O_C, I hate being the guy complaining about the refs, but what's being called and what's being allowed is kind of apparent as to which franchises are preferred by the league office in the finals.

orange 'n green in the vein

I hate the New York Rangers, passionately. Have I mentioned that on here recently? Just checking.

j.w.

So, soup, does years of trying to get the first post qualify as fortittude for the black shirt, or just plain ineptitude for taking so long? :)

Yes Do Tell on How to Get a Black Shirt tho Im happy with any shirt and LOVE this blog regardless 12%....

Ah, the classics. Almost forgotten. The giants (Doug Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Lon Chaney, Lugosi, Karloff) are almost forgotten.

I'm no Floridian, but I've been drinking Yuengling for months now, and I love it, warm or cold.

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | May 16, 2012 at 02:14 PM

I was introduced to Yuengling about 5 years ago by a friend who has since passed away. Even to this day, whenever I order one, I raise my glass (or bottle) to him.

JW - if you are going on a cruise, you might want to think about bringing alcohol instead of beer. Not sure how you will be able to sneak beer in unless u open it and the poor it into another container.

BTW - Yuengling is the oldest brewery in the USA.

raizecane

RIP - Donna Summer

Ohio_Cane

Jimmy Johnson took the Graduation rate at UM from 33% to 88% in his tenure. Nuff said?

j.w.

Thanks, raize- Disney is actually pretty good about bringing beer, I think we have to pay them to stock it for me, but they let you bring beer. My biggest concerns is drinking skunky beer that gets too warm, so annoying when you think you're getting a nice, refreshing cold one only to get something that wasn't stored right.

raizecane

JW - I was not aware that Disney would allow that since buying beer / alcohol is such a money maker for cruise lines.

j.w.

Raize- Disney makes their money by charging everyone double what you would pay on the other cruise lines. I've never gone on a cruise (and to be honest I'm not all that crazy about this trip, but the rest of the family is), but friends who go tell me told me that.

It's May 17th - that means it's time for High School Football Spring Jamborees

Some kids that Canes fans should take an interest in - and whose games I'll be hanging on the sidelines for

- Ryan Green playing against Indian Rocks Christian on Friday

- Maybe Caanan Brown (LB '14) playing against Hernando on Friday

- Maybe Corey Martinez (OL '14) playing against Crystal River

Next week is when the majority of Hillsborough County schools play

- Jordan Sherit, Nigel Harris vs. Blake HS.

- VHargreaves3 vs. Tampa Bay Tech (Maurice Hagens alma mater)

- Leon McQuay3, Alvin Bailey vs. Plant City HS

- Travis Johnson, Vincent Jackson vs. Newsome HS (Xavier Hines, Cameron Ruff as well vs. Newsome)

- Austin Roberts, Paris Bostick, Mitchell Wright, Richey Klepal, Brenden Kellum vs. Leto HS

Some other news - Chase Litton hurt his hand pretty bad in practice, some people thought it was broken, his dad said it was just really bruised and he probably won't play in their Spring Jamboree vs. Tampa Bay Tech HS

Miami vs. BC game is at 3:30 on Sept. 1, ABC; Sept. 8 vs. K State is still TBA; Beth. Cookman vs. Miami game is on ESPN3 at noon, September 15. At least I get an early birthday present for the Bethune game.

Now that you mention it, Deboer was the coach in south Florida up until last year while Canespace was forging a legacy as an internet sports blogging institution with not one, but two, highly prized pieces of apparel for its loyal readership to obtain, maybe he's got it saved in his bookmarks from then?

I've now decided that the Devils have to win, if only so I can watch Tortorella go into complete humbug mode with the media to escalating hilarious results. Maybe John can call Al for some presser pointers after they get ousted?

Ohio_Cane

CEO, some interesting things going on between Papa Cane and @tomahawknation on twitter. Go check it out.

It's impolite 2 whisper Ohio :(

Sh!t just got real. Jon might be targeting one target too big for even him to take down this time.

LB

Ha! I brought that up a couple of days ago. Florida State, being the bastion of evil it is, has no business spouting off on anyone about records or schedule or anything at all.

We must ward ourselves from its darkness, and in doing so... help achieve victory.

RIP Paul Dee...

Former Canes QBs, coaches, many others mourn Paul Dee's passing at Thursday funeral

University of Miami leaders, distinguished local businessmen, two great Canes quarterbacks and three generations of Hurricanes football coaches were among those who gathered at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Coral Gables Thursday morning to mourn the death and celebrate the life of a good man – former UM athletic director Paul Dee.

Dee’s sister, Catherine, spoke of how her brother “had a heart full of love. Humility, sense of humor and aspirations to make the institution he served great were the hallmarks of his life.”

Dee and his wife, Cathy Zuckerman Dee, were supposed to be on a cruise to Italy this week. But Dee underwent surgery for tongue cancer last week, took a turn for the worse in ensuing days, and died last Saturday night at 65.

Among those in attendance at the funeral: former Hurricanes coaches Randy Shannon, Butch Davis and Howard Schnellenberger, former quarterbacks Bernie Kosar and Steve Walsh, UM president Donna Shalala, former UM president Tad Foote, FIU and former UM athletic director Pete Garcia and Orange Bowl CEO Eric Poms.

Davis, who was hired by Dee, said after the funeral that Dee “was a terrific guy and deep thinker. He was a great sounding board, never made a knee jerk reaction. I am very grateful to Paul for giving me the opportunity. I learned a great deal from him about managing crises and adversity.”
Dee served as UM’s general counsel, then took over as athletic director in 1993 and held the job until 2008. He taught classes on campus the past few years and was set to retire June 1.

In an on-campus ceremony afterward, Shalala said Dee “was a man of many facets and talents – to many, a wise and trusted adviser, a dear friend. He was a class act. His was a life of integrity and purpose…. He built a legendary athletic program. His legacies are around us: BankUnited Center, [renovations] to Mark Light Field…. He was a true champion for our university and communitry.”

Shalala said the only time she ever heard Dee curse was after the regrettable pass interference call against Miami in the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State, which cost UM a sixth national title.

Shalala recalled the university’s move from the Big East to the ACC, which “turned out to be more complicated than Paul advised me.”

When the Big East filed a lawsuit, Dee gathered necessary e-mails and other correspondence. When he asked Shalala why she hadn’t saved any of that information, Shalala cracked, “I worked for Clinton. They told us not to collect anything!”

The What

Come on miami, i know you lost bosh but you gotta play better. I can't believe I'm saying this but I actually think the heat are gonna lose this series. Poor lebron, I want him to win a title just so everyone can get off his back. Who knew Chris bosh was so integral to the team. If Miami loses I have no idea what pay Riley will do but I hope he can get two legit big men like the grizzlies have.
