So far we have looked at the 2012 NFL draft from many different and interesting angles. Today we will look at this year's draft from an Atlantic Coast Conference perspective.
Over the past six years, the ACC has had more players selected in the first round of the NFL Draft (37) and more total players selected (214) than any other conference with the exception of the SEC which had 46 first round choices and 237 overall selections. The next closest conference to the ACC is the Big Ten with 31 first-round and 191 overall selections and the Big 12 with 31 first-round and 182 overall picks, respectively.
In 2012 the ACC once again fared very well in terms of having a high number of players selected in general and also several that were chosen in the top three rounds of the NFL draft.
So the questions are:
1. Which ACC team had the most selections overall?
2. Which ACC team had the highest number of selections?
3. Which ACC team had the highest ranked single draft pick in 2012?
Well we are here to answer those questions. So let's get started shall we?
The ACC had three selections in the first round: Boston College LB Luke Kuechly at #9, North Carolina DT Quinton Coples went with the 16th overall pick and Virginia Tech RB David Wilson was selected with the last pick in the first round at #32.
Most selections overall: Your Miami Hurricanes had the most selections overall with six (6) players chosen at numbers 72, 86, 97, 100, 198 and 200. The second highest number was from surprising North Carolina State with 5 with picks at 69, 163, 210, 225 and 239. Florida State, Wake Forest and Clemson all had four (4) draft picks and Virgina Tech had three (3).
Most number of highly rated selections: Miami again led the way for the ACC with four (4) of the top 100 picks. Clemson had 3 Top 100 picks while VT and North Carolina had 2 each. NCST and Wake also had one player selected in the top 100.
Highest draft pick overall: Boston College with LB Luke Kuechly at #9.

I am willing to bet that some of Miami's picks will play better in the pros than they did in college. It seems to be playing out that way that last few years. I am not blaming Golden for this years picks. I hope this staff will be able to get more out the recruits than we have been.

As good as The U looks on the NFL draft "stats" which SOUP so expertly compiled... we STILL have yet to win even ONE ACC title.
C'MON ALREADY CANES! Time to kick some ACC butt!

I really look forward to an AG team; that is, a team of recruits that AG and staff have recruited. I believe you will see a different team attitude, work ethic, commitment and endurance. The RS group seem selfish and aloof, lazy and entitled. Football does not work that way. I really want to see us compete; we were in all the games last year, we never got blown out....yet we still appeared to be going through the motions. You never ever win by going half speed. Tip of the hat to a fallen athlete.
You may think I am kidding you, but a former QB and comedian has passed. George Lindsay, better known as Goober Pyle has died. He was born in Alabama, son of a butcher. Got his BS from University of North Alabama...it was a teachers college under a different name in the day....and he played QB. He was a pretty funny cat. RIP Goober.

Didn't know he played football, VA. Loved his acting skills, tough to see all the Andy Griffith characters leaving us. The reruns were on tv every day after school when I was a kid, and every rain delay during a baseball game it seems.

raize, I thought Bryzgalov actually played better tonight slightly than the birthday man in the other net, Giroux's upcoming sanction for the shoulder to Zubrus' head will be interesting.

OGV - check this stat out -
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Brodeur became the first goaltender in NHL history to appear in a playoff game as a teenager as well as a 40-year-old. On April 27, 1992, Brodeur -- then 19 years, 357 days -- gave up three goals on 15 shots in 32:04 against the Rangers.

OKAY. I'll give it a shot. I can start researching bios next week. If any other Canespacers have suggestions about how best to access relevant databases, please let me know.

If this coaching staff stays together the good times will roll again, if we start changing staff memebers left & right the end result will be the same as it has been the last 6 to 7 years. I just want to see consistancy in a positive direction.

I don't pay much attention to the Big East anymore, but after seeing their commisioner resign, hearing that Boise and SD St. are having second thoughts about joining, I got a feeling the BE football conference is on its last legs.

OGV, Giroux suspended for Game 5 for hit on Zubris.
It's warranted, but I'm amazed Shanaban pulled the trigger on a star player with his team on the brink of elimination.

Another thought....thanks to the CEO for his time, effort and consideration regarding this blog. We all have written thoughts, replys and retorts that probably should not have seen the light of day, that should not have been followed by the click of SEND. Everybody gets up in the air now and then. Some people go to far.....and never come back into orbit. The boss must get tired of this at times...I recall a couple times where he was ready to shut it down: No Fun, everybody out of the pool!!!
With that in mind, and the importance of UM to many of us, lests all try to keep it clean, and not make personal attacks. I still catch myself erasing whole comments as I try to remind myself 1 person might be offended or hurt; I start over.
Thanks Soup for your patience, we appreciate it. I think we all can agree on that. JMO

I have read the blog everyday, but I go through spells where I have struggled to write due to my circumstances in life where it is hard. Well, I thought alot about the article regarding depression, and its not for me. I will try to contribute each day in a positive manner. It may not help all of you, but I know it will make me feel better!!! Thanks to the many of you who add a great deal to the things that revolve artound UM football, and more importantly our lives as people.!!!
Posted by: VA Cane | May 07, 2012 at 04:10 PM
Papa Cane - I think that UM will take 1-2 CBs in 2013. I believe that 4-Stars Artie Burns, Kendall Fuller and Mackensie Alexander are top 3 targets.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | May 07, 2012 at 04:31 PM
^^^ Personally, I see Alexander & Burns as the most likely to sign with UM next February. Fuller will be a tough pull. Burns could play Safety.

"Posted by: Ohio_Cane | May 07, 2012 at 03:25 PM"
I thought it warranted at least that but the situation in the series would get it knocked down to just a fine. Then I read Daley and Bettman were in attendance last night which made me think a suspension was definitely on its way because you can't do stuff like that in front of the commissioner and expect to get away scot-free.
I'm hesitant to say that's the series now because of how Kovy's missing of game two was the turning point in momentum for New Jersey and that the 2000 East Finals comeback from 3-1 down for the Devils played out exactly in reverse of this series so far. You have to believe all those old Devil's war-horses who made that particular comeback 12 years ago will do everything they can to ward off a revenge being served scenario from playing out by getting lackadaisical though.

Wizard...I do not know why Hargreaves was NOT mentioned. Six seems to think he will be a Hurricane but the recruiting sites seem have him listed as FSU or UF I bleieve.
Six also RAVES about Alexander but gave no indication about his school of choice?

The Wizard, Papa Cane stated Hargreaves doesnt have UM in his top 5, let alone top 3. I dunno, just reported what he said earlier today on the CB position

If Barrow gets a DC job somewhere next year, UM can do a lot worse than repatriate another of the Coker-era staff purges in Hargreaves. Werner on the other hand . . . pass.

Hassan...I wonder just how common what happened at UNC actually is across the NCAA? I would be willing to bet my house, car and wife that they are NOT the only university doing this, they are just the ones that got caught. When U listen to interviews with some players you just have to shake your head and wonder how they graduated from HS and if they could ever pass a college course.

Some recruiting stuff from The Seventh Floor:
Touches on the Alexander brothers, Maquedis Bain, Dedrin Senat, TJ Johnson, Alex Collins, and David Williams. Also says QB David Thompson is leaning towards going to college instead of the MLB.

Real Common with the top level guys
Here is what a guy that i am training told me, this guy was in teh Olympic trials in college ran a 9.98 and was once crowned as the NCAA 100m and 200m champ he played a lil football in the SEC. Anyways me and him have been training (I know a lil about the science of running fast) and we are talking about his college days. He says "In H.S. I needed to raise my GPA to get into college, the principal called him into the office with all his mail the college scholarships hands him a new report card, and tells him to pick where he wanted to go, grades were no longer an issue" So once this guy turned pro in track he of course took care of that principal. Once he got to college he says the Football players are by far the worst. My friend was the fastest kid in the nation and when he was around the football team those guys had "tutors" that basically did all the work for them. The girls who slept with them and did all their homework basically are given free tuition and other benefits by the schools. Sometimes they disguise this by giving the girls jobs where they work for the school and get free tuition. They of course never show up for the actual work but nonethless get the benefits. At most schools they are pretty good at covering this up but not to mention the fact that the NC2A does not even want to look at this because it is so rampant. As I pointed out earlier in the UNC case it took FANS on a RIVAL BLOG to find what the school and the NC2A could not.
BTW the other blog is completly down anyone know anything about that?

Papa Cane - Recruiting Update: Miami has offered 2014 LB Shaun Hamilton, 6'1'' and 220 lbs, from Montgomery, Alabama. UM is #1 on his list right now.
Papa Cane - LB Shaun Hamilton: The main competition here is Auburn. He is from Alabama and grew up rooting for them. It's hard to land SEC kids.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | May 08, 2012 at 09:52 AM
Papa Cane - QB David Thompson: Personally, I think that he will get drafted in the early-mid rounds, but chose to attend UM and start in the fall.

Whatever happens in this recruiting cycle, we have to hold on to Alex Collins. He has the potential to be the next great at RB U. His quicks, strength and footwork are impressive.

And soon, very, very soon...

Jon Bastian (free article):
North Miami (Fla.) High School cornerback Troy McCollum ran in the state track meet this past weekend and finished in seventh place. Now that track season is over, he is back at school and focused on football.
Today, McCullum had an unexpected visitor. “Coach (George) McDonald just came and seen me at school,” McCollum said. The 2013 prospect is very interested in the Canes, but doesn’t hold an offer yet.
The Miami coaches are pursuing McCollum and want to see more of his talents. “[Coach McDonald said] come to their camp early so they can offer me because they like me a lot,” McCollum said. “It’s because I can play safety and corner.”
The 6’0, 170-pound athlete has Miami high on his list because he likes the way they use their defensive backs. Ole Miss and FIU are his two offers so far.
