Note: This article was written for Canespace by blogger OhioCane.
Full disclosure to start off: I have lived in Ohio for the last 20 years. I know it is sad, but true, that over 95% of my friends and family are long time, and big time, Ohio State fans. However, let me tell U that as a Miami Hurricanes fan my hate for the Buckeyes could not run any deeper.
Let’s be honest, how could we possibly talk about Ohio State without bringing up the word “Hate”. It sounds good, it feels good, it rhymes, and it just fits.
My hate for Ohio State may run a little deeper than some of yours simply because I’ve had to listen to their annoying, arrogant, and clueless fans for the better part of my life, up close and personal, and not just over the internet or in the media.
Believe me when I tell U, it doesn’t get much worse than listening to a fan base be more over-confident and over-bearing than the Bucknuts. Let me break it down for you bullet-point-style:
Their Fans: As I’ve alluded to previously, it’s the FANS! To be completely fair, there isn’t any other sport or team worth cheering for in Ohio, especially in college, so they kind of get every fan from the state that doesn’t already have a favorite team. Then the rest gets them to follow along and scream “OH-IO” and sing “Hang on Sloopy” until their redneck vocal cords fall out. Sitting there drinking their Old Milwaukee beer and screaming their heads off and playing their fight song with every single yard gained. Seriously, it’s 2nd and 9 and your team gains 2 yards, and you go nuts? Seriously? You know it’s now 3rd and 7, right?
Their Fans (AGAIN): Yes, they deserve more than one bullet. I don’t know about U, but I always have to listen to this: “Why does Miami call themselves ‘The U’, and why do they have a ‘U’ on their helmet? That stands for University, so every school in the country could call themselves ‘The U’, that’s stupid”. Are they kidding? This, coming from a team with uniforms that don’t match (silver helmet and gray pants) and has a mascot of a Buckeye, which is a nut that fell off a tree? They’re NUTS, that’s for sure.
DID I MENTION THEIR FANS? Seriously, they’ve won one National Championship since 1970 and they act like the best thing since sliced bread. Mention the 5 National Championships Miami has since 1983? They respond “What happened in 2003?” or “Who won the most recent one?”. Mention “24-6” (The most recent Canes’ beating of OSU) and they respond with the same questions as an answer. Mention how Miami has more 1st round draft picks in the NFL, most players in the NFL, most Pro-Bowlers in the NFL, etc? They respond with the same answer. Give me a break!
Not only that, but then U add in this: “THEE Ohio State University.” This is not only their fans, but the players, alumni and coaches all say it too. Why the need for “Thee” before hand? It’s not like there are two Ohio State Universities and you are trying to claim being THE ONE to separate yourself so no one confuses it. You’re the ONLY one in the Country, and it’s just Ohio State University. Maybe if it was a private university, like Miami for example, then you could be arrogant, but you're still just a state-funded public university. Don’t try to church it up, son.
Their Conference: They showboat their record and conference championships like they won the National Championship every year. Yes, they’ve won the Big Ten almost every year for the umpteenth time, but let’s be honest, the Big East excluded, they are in the worst conference in America that claims to be a powerhouse. They keep hiding behind this weak conference and even weaker out of conference schedule. Take any top team in the country from any year, and they’d beat this Bucknut team on a regular basis. Ask the most recent 2 National Champions who dominated them on college football’s biggest stage - Florida (2007) and LSU (2008).
Their Stadium: Albeit a nice and historic facility, it’s shaped like a toilet seat. Seriously. Have U ever looked at the view of “The Horseshoe” from above? Looks just like one from a gas station bathroom. I’d like to sit on top of it and take a nice, long, brown…Buckeye!
Their former coach: Old Sweater Vest was a lying prick. Sorry, but it’s true. Yes, he recruited good players, but he also paid them and lied for them both of which have been proven. For some reason he kept getting a pass from the NCAA, until recently, when it was impossible to sweep it under the rug and he was finally cut loose by Ohio State.
Their current coach: Same story, but even worse than Tressel. Not more than four months into his tenure as The Bucknut’s coach, and he was already ruffling feathers in the Big Ten due to his sleazy recruiting tactics. He’ll continue to coach and recruit players the same way he did at Florida. He’ll baby them and give preferential treatment to his star players who will go on to the NFL and continue to be big babies there (See: Percy Harvin).
January 3rd, 2003: U know where this part is going, don’t U? How could U bring up the HATE for Ohio State without mentioning that date? Oh, I’ll never live this day down with friends and family. In all fairness, this game never should’ve come down to one call on one play that would take away another National Championship. The title was stripped from the hands of arguably one of the best Hurricane teams ever, and definitely the best team in college football history to NOT win a championship.
In conclusion, there are many, many, many reasons to hate Ohio State. There are probably even more than those that I listed. U can chose one, choose a few, or choose all of them.
I, for one, choose them all. I really do hate Ohio State.
P.S. THERE WAS NO PASS INTERFERENCE!

When your head coach has a 1 or 2 weeks vacation per year with all the work load he has the rest of the year...You better behave and not become a distraction during his vacation with his family. A message to all the UM football players.

Monty was spewing more HATE than anybody (except for maybe Six) during basebrawll season. He wanted Morris' head on a platter!

When people are NOT on Canespace where do U spend your time? Facebook? Twitter? ITU? Canesport? CanesTime? AllCanes?

Check is in the mail for my shirt. It looks great! Hopefully it brings me more happy times than my Shannon era one. I had to retire that thing a few seasons back! May my new shirt go undefeated forever and always! Thanks Canespace!

I go to all those places and get the Bleacher report. Anyone know of a really good Canes podcast? USC has a really good one.

The Dude...the other sites are fine but going to the Bleacher Report lowers your IQ by 30 points. Just ask Six! Do U have PAID memberships at the other sites?

Okay, lets make one thing VERY clear. There is no place like home and home is Canespace. As far as bleacher report goes, all it does is link me to new stories on sun sentinel and miami herald. Yeah the whole like leacher report 50 best list are lame as all hell.
Posted by: The Dude | July 03, 2012 at 12:14 AM
At Canespace all the time with a quick check
at the Herald, SS, ESPN, Rivals, Scout, twitter, PBP, ITU Just to check their front page(not a member...never will), Yahoo, WQAM, WVUM and CBS sports...
Yes SOUP i never hated Jim Morris. I just think his best years are way behind. And by the way where is six when you need him. I will never forget all the goods from big Jim but it would be sad for him to end his coaching career like Bobby Bowden did.

As far as paying for pay sites, hell no. Why would anyone pay for info you can get here for free?
Posted by: The Dude | July 03, 2012 at 12:15 AM
Also with Dante Phillips, why do we want this kid? Do we want to be his "fall-back" school cuz he couldnt get into Florida? Pay sites, Pfah! Seriously when I want to know whats going on with a kid, I just ask here, then I know.

Oh i forgot! Papa Cane is a good source. But we pretty much have all we need right here.

I agree that I HATE FSU, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, Nebraska, Florida and basically any other school that is not 'The U'! But, I know it is harsh to HATE a single person.
Well, in honor of HATE week, I would like to acknowledge that ONE person in the history of college football that I HATE. It is none other than....
DOUG FLUTIE!
I truely HATE just typing his name.
1)His Heisman Trophy came for a single play, because the rest of the season his stats were good, not great.
2) He cursed his own team, who for twenty some odd years could not beat 'The U'! (Well, maybe I was greatful for that.)
3) For everything holy, if I have to have another announcer circle the corner of the end-zone during a Miami/BC game, I will kill somebody. Not to mention, they did it last year and we don't even play in the same stadium as the play occured!
4) People talk about how nice he is and his charities, but the only time I met him he was a total a-hole!
Maybe I needed to vent, but I HATE DOUG FLUTIE!!! (Thank you.)

Hey all,
I'm sorry I missed the end of the FSU article. WV got slammed with a state of emergency (I think we're still under it). Heatwave then a violent storm sent people into a panic. At its peak, 91% of the population went without power. Add in the heat, and it was chaotic. Note to world: stay out of the way of hillbillies. Mowing the lawn at 2 AM. Fights at the gas pump for cutting line at 6 AM. Blocking up the highway to get into a fast food biscuit restaurant. Old ladies falling down and the fire department busting out the back window to get them help. All else I'll keep under wraps unless asked.
We came out lucky: only lost our cable and a trash can. I'm back, a little. I'm unsure when we get our connection back.

"When people are NOT on Canespace where do U spend your time? Facebook? Twitter? ITU? Canesport? CanesTime? AllCanes?

I usually browse Papa Cane's twitter fairly hard. I generally don't post anything from there because Ohio must have some sort of sweetness-linkage hook from there to here, and is well organized.
Sid Rosenberg's WQAM podcasts about UM were beyond gold. I learned more in 5 minutes of that program than anywhere else (this was before I found Canespace). Now that he's gone (I think Sid's back on radio), WQAM is trite (Sileo), obtuse (Joe Rose), predictable (Irvin), and an excellent substitute for sleeping pills.
The Herald's UM page is descent from August to January. The comment section looks like the FBI's most wanted list. Manny Navarro is really good on radio. The other lady? No comment.
Heather Dinich is good, but UM information comes out in drips.
The offseason is flat out awful. The WVU fans in my office are recruiting numbers obsessed (like a Spacer or two who shall remain nameless... :) ), so I browse ESPN a bit.
ITU is to journalism as Uwe Boll films are to cinema.
Facebook has turned to nonsense. Most of my contacts are trying to "outcool" each other with gadgets or form psychosemantic relationships with the recently broken up hot girl. Furthermore, fewer folks type English.

Jon Bastian (free article) on Kermit:
“Things are going good,” Whitfield said about the recruiting process. “West Virginia, Florida State, Miami, Clemson, Florida and Ohio State in no particular order. They have all offered.”

U got that right - and better than anyone else!
BTW, I mainly just check ESPN, but that is almost always for info other than U news. I honestly do not have the time to check others, at least consistently.
So I go where I know I can find the best info - The Space. Thanks to the Legion, I am able to get all I need here. Besides, considering that there are literally thousands of HS prospects at any given time, how would I know if the person writing for any other site knows his/her stuff?
My thought is that if they were so good at evaluating prospects, then most likely they should be on some HC's staff and putting their "money where their mouth is".

Just got back from the doctor's office from my two week follow-up for my hernia surgery.
He has cleared me for ALL tailgating related activities. I am good to go! Is it September yet? LOL
Posted by: 86Cane | July 03, 2012 at 10:42 AM
RE: the question about where people go besides Canespace I was just curious.
I bounce back and forth between the blog and Twitter where I find all kind of interesting links posted and then bring them to the blog when relevant.
I gave up on Facebook and RARELY go there to check my page and I never find anything useful there. I post the articles there because there is an auto post feature from Typepad that allows me to publish it on FB and Twitter when it posts here.
I do not have any paid memberships at any of the pay sites and spend more time on the ACC site or occasionally ESPN.

The Atlantic Coast Conference and the Orange Bowl Committee announced today a 12-year agreement that will annually feature the ACC Champion in the Discover Orange Bowl to be played on New Year’s Day at 1:00 pm beginning after the 2014 season.
As part of the new postseason college football arrangement recently announced by the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee, the ACC has selected the Discover Orange Bowl as its annual contract bowl partner, to serve as the home of the ACC Champion. If the ACC Champion is identified as one of the top four teams by the Bowl Championship Series selection committee, then the ACC Champion will participate in the national semifinals and a replacement team from the ACC would participate in the Discover Orange Bowl.
In addition to the partnership between the ACC and the Discover Orange Bowl, it’s anticipated that the Orange Bowl will host at least four semifinal games in the new recently announced arrangement by the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee. In the years that the Orange Bowl serves as a semifinal host, the ACC Champion would then participate in one of the three host bowls that will be established as per the direction of the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee.

When I'm not here, I'm usually chasing around one of the kids or going to their events/ But on the internet, I spend a lot of time on twitter, less on Facebook but enough to check in occasionally, and I look for amusing or interesting Cane related stories on some of the other sites. Occasionally there is something out there that we don't discuss here, not that often, though.
