Tomorrow, on August 3, your University of Miami Hurricane football team will run out onto Greentree Field behind the Hecht Athletic Center to begin the annual ritual known as Fall practice.
What happens on the practice field in Coral Gables will eventually lead them to the start of the 2012 college football season on Saturday, September 1 against Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA.
According to all of the college football media "experts", the young and inexperienced Hurricanes are not really expected to do much this year in the ACC or on the National scene. However, there are around 85 players and about 10 coaches that would beg to differ with that prediction.
This Hurricane team will be led by head coach Al Golden who is headed into his second season at Miami. Golden got some much needed relaxation after a difficult first 12 months at UM by spending some quality time this Summer doing some off-shore fishing with former UM coach Jimmy Johnson.
Golden and his coaches and players undoubtedly have much bigger plans and loftier goals and expectations than most pundits would project for Miami in 2012. To put it simply, Golden and crew hope to land and fillet some bigger fish than many of the National experts have predicted.
Yet even Hurricane fans are torn as to what this 2012 team can and will accomplish. Miami fan predictions are all over the board and range from 12-0 to 5-7 in Golden's second year of rebuilding the team and depth on the roster.
One of the biggest battles this Fall will be at quarterback between UM Senior Stephen Morris and Memphis transfer Ryan Williams. Today UM released video interviews with both players.
First lets see what Morris had to say about the QB battle and the 2012 season:
Here is Williams describing his take on the QB position and the 2012 team:
In the end Miami will only go as far as either Morris or Williams will take them. It is a given that the QB battle will shape the 2012 team and very possibly the future of the Miami Hurricane football team going forward.
im not gonna jump into saying that because gaytor Hill resigned means that the NCAA is going to come down hard on UM. But i would like the ruling to come out sooner then later especially before we start the season so that our guys aren't losing focus.
#CANES12-0!!!

Prediction time:
1 more bowl ban in addition to one we already took, 3-5 years probation, 24 scholarship loss over 4 years.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 03, 2012 at 10:24 AM
I think NCAA is going after the coaches. We will get what Ohio state or UCF got. Not worried and crossing fingers that a ruling is coming soon.
Posted by: The What | August 03, 2012 at 10:29 AM
THIS CAN'T BE GOOD!
Posted by: canezilla | August 03, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Zilla...good to see u around the 'ol blob.
It was never going to be "good" for UM. The NCAA is going to hand out some serious sanctions and penalties to Miami and there is no doubt about that.
It's just that NOBODY knows how serious or severe they will be. I for one do not believe they are going to be that severe, but I am always the optimist.
Prediction: 1 more bowl ban and 5 schollies lost for 3 years (15 total) and 5 years probation.
Posted by: 86Cane | August 03, 2012 at 10:30 AM
That's a brutal and negative prediction. We're basically screwed then. Do the math on the roster size into the third & fourth year & 2-3 years thereafter. Guaranteed mediocrity for years to come.
Posted by: Cruising | August 03, 2012 at 10:30 AM
The What, while I agree they won't be devastating, I think it'll be worse than what OSU, UNC, and UCF got.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 03, 2012 at 10:30 AM
1 more bowl ban, 5 years probation, report to a monitor every six months about compliance, 5 schollies lost for 3 years or
15 over 3 years. Oh and 3 year show cause for hurtt and 1 year for hill
Posted by: The What | August 03, 2012 at 10:32 AM
The What...U are correct that the NCAA is going HARD after the coaches who participated in the NCAA violations.
Look for news on Hurtt (and possibly Stoutland) too pretty SOON.
Posted by: 86Cane | August 03, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Hill resigning might not be a bad thing. Shows the NCAA is going after the coach's like they said they would do. Hill was looking at a show cause just like Hurtt and a few others will. The biggest news was Shannon getting a job at TCU after the NCAA interviewed him. Means he was not a part of it and went no farther than assistant coach's. One more bowl ban and 15 ships over 3 years IMO.

I was referring to Ohio prediction. But losing 15 schollies over 3 years is WAY harsher thn OSU or NC and makes us average for years to come. do the math on roster reduction. Can't even have injuries or we're done
Posted by: Cruising | August 03, 2012 at 10:35 AM
15 over 3 is manageable. We would be at 80 a year for three years. There are teams not on probation that played below that last year. The gaturds being one of them.
Posted by: The []_[] | August 03, 2012 at 10:39 AM
DONE? The U could never be done..... especially with Golden in Charge, and i sleep at night comfortably knowing he's the man running the ship when the penalties come down.
Posted by: UpNorthCane27 | August 03, 2012 at 10:41 AM
With that being said you have to recruit smart. Can't take a chance on kids that might not get in due to grades or getting in trouble. Golden signed 33 kids last cycle and only ONE did not get in.....that was not a coincidental.
Posted by: The []_[] | August 03, 2012 at 10:43 AM
You have to be specific about roster caps. 5 over 3 means at year 4 your roster is -15. That's how it's done I think

Why can't u guys stay positive & upbeat like UpNorth. True Cane. Swami & Ogv, u guys could learn a thing or 2 from UpNorth, u 2 Ohio!

"We're basically screwed then. Do the math on the roster size into the third & fourth year & 2-3 years thereafter. Guaranteed mediocrity for years to come."
Unrealistic.
One more bowl ban in a transitioning UM team won't hurt. We've got the foundation for the future. Other schools (not just USC) have survived worse.
Golden also has performed roster management before: at Temple and at UM (see Maryland game).
It absolutely will have a negative impact, but it's not a doom & gloom scenario. Come on.
Posted by: LB | August 03, 2012 at 10:54 AM
It's definitely not doom and gloom. NCAA has to play it up to the media. 2 bowl bans one served sounds much harsher than one more bowl ban. It's all about phrasing and making it look harsh. The perception is Miami deserves the death penalty. The NCAA investigation didnt reveal that. So what does the NCAA do? They put a 5 year probation (seems harsh), 2 bowl bans (seems harsh until you realize one was served), 15 schollies over 3 years (seems harsh until you realize that's 80 players for a 3 year period). It's all about making it seem like they are coming down hard to the media. Now will we get punished of course. Will it be tough, sure it will. Will it be crippling or even really harsh? NO. They couldn't get testimony from former canes. Sit back and relax. We are in good hands with golden and will be back to our rightful place in 2 years.
Go Canes
Posted by: The What | August 03, 2012 at 11:02 AM
We should get no worse than UCF sanctions. That's my opinion, not what I'm saying will happen
If we get USC type sanctions I think we struggle for years unless we can recruit like Kiffin. He may suck as a game coach, but all roster slots are brimming with 4-5*. They're winning and will be a top 5 team this year
USC didn't cooperate like we have, if we get their type sanctions or worse then emmrt and NCAA are out of control and punishing us 4 reputation

Well, there's always the conductor's hat down in Carol City waiting for good old Aubrey. Enjoy the show cause label you're about to get slapped with and say hi to Black Santa for me in the unemployment line.
Maybe he can come back under his old worthless AD out in Lubbock that got this whole mess uncorked in the first place by allowing unfettered access to a pathetic midget liar who never had a dollar he actually earned to his name?

Posted by: LB | August 03, 2012 at 10:54 AM
Unless of course U are really a Gator fan in disguise and U WANT it to be "doom and gloom" for Miami and try to get Hurricane fans' knickers in a wad?
Posted by: 86Cane | August 03, 2012 at 11:22 AM
USC has it easy because Cali kids dont leave for the most part and if you think about it who are they gonna play for in that state UCLA, Cal, San Diego St lol?????.... theres a reason why they load up they get all their state talent and then pick away from other states because of the hollywood vibe they got there. So Kiffin is just in the right place at the right time.

GREAT article. Ohio - Thanks for posting!
Biggest difference in UM & USC situations is that USC was able to basically isolate the wrong-doing (that was proved) to Reggie & his family. I don't think NCAA was able to find a lot of evidence on the coaching staff or other university employees.
Even so, I don't expect the sanctions to be incapacitating. The U has reacted perfectly & there isn't much actual evidence or proof out there beyond the midget's claims.

And my prediction the same for the past 10 years um goes 12-0 and wins the ship loll!!!

USC enjoys a lot of the same advantages that UM does: Great weather, large local talent pool, championship tradition, etc. They've had a lot of ups & downs also. We're just not as used to the cycles. They may be up right now, but we'll be back.
I'm excited about all the young kids. Part of me wishes "those" juniors/seniors had come back for their 4th-5th seasons, for their sake as much as ours. BUT...mostly I'm happy they're gone so the Golden Era can start in ernest and the Program can get a fresh start. Throw all the Shapiro shady BS along with the weakness of Coker & the ineptitude of Shannon overboard! Start over & resurrect Miami Football! Dam, it is time.

Thats awesome. I really believe every man needs to have a baby girl at some point in life. Its an amazing feeling and the daddy-daughter bond is special. I bet yours is over-the-top cute in the cheerleading outfit!
I'm good. Been staying really busy, but was able to get to Destin for a week's vacation last month. Its been over a year since I made it all the way down south, so I'm due for a trip this year...I hope!
My daughter turns 13 this month (just wait for the pre-teen/teen years...Ahhhh!). She made the US Youth Soccer ODP Region 3 Player Pool this summer. Region 3 being NTX, STX, OK, AR, TN, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, NC, and FL. So, she is thrilled as its a nice accomplishment. Hopefully she'll make the Regional team when its selected next year.

WOW Dallas thats awesome about your daughter. Soccer is our #1 sport and what i played my whole life through college but knee injuries made me call it quits now i coach a u12B premier team thats in partnership with Brown university. Im hoping my little girl likes it and decides to play, she enjoys saying "goalllll" everytime were watching Barcelona play, she'll actually sit down and watch a full game with me which i think is a little crazy especially for her age lol.....

Thanks UpNorth! Its a rare thing to find a fanatic "American" football fan that appreciates The Beautiful Game. Its cool that U played thru college & now coach. I bet your daughter will be a great player. Its crazy how young the college recruiting starts, especially for girls. I guess since they mature faster than boys, there's no reason to wait; what U see when they are freshmen & sophomores is pretty much what U get when they're juniors/seniors. Its hard for me to believe its almost time to start thinking about college.

Cruising, they could agree to a summary disposition, which would mean the NOA, response, and hearing don't happen. We don't know whether this will or won't happen, of course, but I'd argue everything UM has done points to accepting a summary disposition.
