Tomorrow, on August 3, your University of Miami Hurricane football team will run out onto Greentree Field behind the Hecht Athletic Center to begin the annual ritual known as Fall practice.
What happens on the practice field in Coral Gables will eventually lead them to the start of the 2012 college football season on Saturday, September 1 against Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA.
According to all of the college football media "experts", the young and inexperienced Hurricanes are not really expected to do much this year in the ACC or on the National scene. However, there are around 85 players and about 10 coaches that would beg to differ with that prediction.
This Hurricane team will be led by head coach Al Golden who is headed into his second season at Miami. Golden got some much needed relaxation after a difficult first 12 months at UM by spending some quality time this Summer doing some off-shore fishing with former UM coach Jimmy Johnson.
Golden and his coaches and players undoubtedly have much bigger plans and loftier goals and expectations than most pundits would project for Miami in 2012. To put it simply, Golden and crew hope to land and fillet some bigger fish than many of the National experts have predicted.
Yet even Hurricane fans are torn as to what this 2012 team can and will accomplish. Miami fan predictions are all over the board and range from 12-0 to 5-7 in Golden's second year of rebuilding the team and depth on the roster.
One of the biggest battles this Fall will be at quarterback between UM Senior Stephen Morris and Memphis transfer Ryan Williams. Today UM released video interviews with both players.
First lets see what Morris had to say about the QB battle and the 2012 season:
Here is Williams describing his take on the QB position and the 2012 team:
In the end Miami will only go as far as either Morris or Williams will take them. It is a given that the QB battle will shape the 2012 team and very possibly the future of the Miami Hurricane football team going forward.
24 - 9 = 15
15 more ships lost
OSU penalty: 9 total ships lost
Your prediction: 24 total ships lost
Simple math. Facts are facts. I'll understand if you told me you were schooled in Cleveland

A summary disposition is what PSU got.
No way. This is not even in the same universe, but your point is taken. When was the last time a summary disposition was used!
The only way we agree to a summary disposition is if the penalties are light or the NCAA threatens us with an or else like a death penalty. like they did to Pervert State U
Posted by: Cruising | August 03, 2012 at 01:51 PM
24 / 4 = 6 per year
9 / 3 = 3 per year
I think our violations (what can be proven is yet to be seen) are worse than OSU, but not near as bad as PSU.
I don't see it as that big of a deal, tbh. U may disagree, and that's fine.
In no way do I pretend to know anything about the sanctions other than what's printed on paper. I hope I'm wrong and it's less that that. It is, however, just a prediction. Take it for what it is.
I appreciate the thought in your attempt to act like I'm not educated though.

First Canes practice moved to 6pm due to inclement weather.

It's about total number if schollies Ohio.
How you can you say 24 schollies over 4 years is not much worse than 9 over three years is beyond me. One is a wrist slap, the other is being hammered. Its like you're stuck on a position and will argue it just not to be wrong. Any rational person would say 24 is MUCH worse than 9, whether it's uverse 3 or 4 years is totally irrelevant
The crack was a about Cleveland, not u. Don't be so sensitive just cuz you're wrong this time. Everybody makes mistakes.
Posted by: Cruising | August 03, 2012 at 02:07 PM
1 - It's an opinion. Like it or not, I wouldn't be that mad at 6 less per year.
2 - I'm not arguing. Just expanding on my original post of what I think may happen. I don't argue opinions, seeing as there is generally no right or wrong when it comes to them.
3 - I'm not mad or sad or even sensitive. If I got mad every time someone I don't know said something about me over the internet, I'd have had a stroke by now.

The last summary disposition that I remember is Baylor's basketball. Rumors are flying that Oregon agreed to it for their current investigation, and UM's level of cooperation with the NCAA suggests that we won't have much to argue about.
Penn State's punishment was completely different than anything that has ever happened in the NCAA and hopefully never happens again. I don't remember either party saying that they agreed to a summary dispo, but I could be wrong.

Manny - Noteworthy in position battle: AJ Highsmith has about 80-90 snaps at safety in game action; Kacy Rodgers about 20
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 03, 2012 at 03:02 PM
SMD - Hey Canes fans: Al Golden was right on. Players told us every one of them passed last night's conditioning test.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 03, 2012 at 03:12 PM
Manny - Of 9 DBs recruited in the last Canes class only ones working at safety we've heard are Deon Bush and Rayshawn Jenkins
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 03, 2012 at 03:24 PM
Manny - One thing I gathered from UM today: IQ level has risen at safety with Highsmith and Rodgers in the mix. Both are sharp
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 03, 2012 at 03:31 PM
Last I'm saying on this:
24 > 9
24 is significantly greater than 9 and when it comes to scholarships, the difference is worlds apart.
That's not opinion. That is FACT. It cannot be argued.
On the summary dispo, I don't know if they called it that, but that's what it was. Both parties agreed. No committee review. No appeal. Case closed. Now you could argue that it was a dictatorial decree with no due process.

Ruh roh. Mr. Hill is leaving the neighborhood.
"Unless of course U are really a Gator fan in disguise and U WANT it to be "doom and gloom" for Miami and try to get Hurricane fans' knickers in a wad?"
Tee hee. No worries here.
Oh, and I registered a while back. I'm just seriously lazy and they're weird at work about logging into Typepad. Though I suppose my IP is pretty accurate.

86 I agree with your assessment of Sanctions the NCAA will hand Miami. 1 additional year bowl ban and 15 scholarships divided over 3 years. So then our Canes will have 80 scholarship athletes instead of 80.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 03, 2012 at 04:14 PM
Terrance...good to see U blogging on Canespace lateyly. And yeah, I know what U meant 80 instead of 85 players. I think the way it works is that instead of having 25 Ships to offer each year U only get 20, so the numbers could dip a bit below 80 if players leave early or their is attrition or serious injuries.
Most importantly U have to be smart and play the numbers right.

And Al's been doing a great job of bringing in kids that want to be here; kids with good attitudes - at least seems that way right now. The current sophomores & freshmen are going to be the leaders that get The Program thru the sanctions.
And...hey CGNC! Sounds like U r getting closer to that big move...finally! bet U cant wait

WURD ON DA SKREETZ IZ:
1. What did Hill in was him not being completely honest with the NCAA. Thats somethin nobody should ever do, includin coaches, ballahs and the suits. He would still be at UF if he just was straight up with what he did and no way in hell is UF willin to take that chance when they know Will gotz his own problems to deal with.
2. To answer a question I know peoples been askin, f nah Hill wont be welcomed anywhere down here when us Miami goons around. To many of us Miami boiz would die for this U and aint no f n way we would ever turn our backs.
3. I cant speak for every Miami ballah thats been through here cause I aint in touch with them all but I can tell you that this boi or any of the boiz I get with never said sh$# bout Nevs claim to anyone at yahoo or other members of the media. So unless you hear it from an official statement from Miami, its all just graspin and throwin sh$# to see what sticks with the media.

U guys need to take a chill pill with all the sanction talk. U guys act like they have tons of evidence with several snitches in the dark. As far as we know the NCAA doesnt have jack because none of the former players are going to rat! I am not making predictions on sanctions but I do not believe it will be worse than OSU. If Miami were to get another bowl ban and lose 24 ships then get ready because we will suck for years to come....

YES!!!!

I agree if the NCAA is sensible and doesn't cave in to the media and popular opinion, but that's a big if. Fingers crossed.

********
The bowl ban will be no big deal, but I totally agree 24 ships lost will really hurt. Thats my point b4 that 24 ships lost will make us mediocre for years.

Perryman is a beast look at these strength #'s
Perryman, who says he’s 6-feet tall and 227 pounds, has put on seven pounds and improved in the weight room. He’s improved from 375 pounds to 400 pounds on the bench press, from 24 reps of 225 pounds to 30 reps, and from 495 pounds on squat to 515.
30 reps, last year spend could not lift half that. We are a much bigger and stronger team this year. Remember Perryman is a true Soph. How good will this kid be next year when he is 235 and squatting the gym? Once he starts sleeping in the film room he will become and all timer here.

---------------------------------
If I remember correctly (and I may be wrong), but didn't we only have 20-some doing 225 20 times and like 4 doing 225 30 times?
That's a HUGE jump. Golden and staff has them buying in!!

Boston college preview--(one mans opinion)
Well before we get started, let's take a look at the negatives
1)we never play well against B.C.
2)They beat us last year.
3)Opening game for a very young team on the road.
4)They have a pretty dam good Qb
5)They play well in the trenches.
6)They think they will win.(that comes from something we have lost)
Other than those things I really don't see them having a advantage.

Some of our freshman look impressive. Jawand Blue is a big LB. Al the new DT's look big. jamilton looks good. Bush, duke and tracy all are a lil small but look good. Carter is a big kid.
Posted by: Hassan | August 03, 2012 at 08:03 PM
The positives
1)They are very weak ( speed wise) both offensively and defensively on
The perimeter.( Possibly the slowest team in the acc)
2)the sheer lack of speed will give our db's a big advantage.
3) I know what you are thinking what about the T. E.?well
if our coaches have not addressed that issue by now. We will
Be in for a long season.
4)Our o-line has grown up( much bigger much stronger)
5) Even though we are young, we will be a much smarter
Football team this year.
6) Our defense will control this game.
7) more speed- better athletes and they will have a chip on there
Shoulder.
Posted by: Mcginns ale house | August 03, 2012 at 08:07 PM
Outcome--
The game will be close for most of the first half. A late touchdown
Before the half gives a 9 point lead.(dominated by our defense).
The second half our running game opens up the passing game.
As confidence grows in the offense, we put them away easily
In the second half. Um34-Bc16 --- vault it 86

Hill resigning might not be a bad thing. Shows the NCAA is going after the coach's like they said they would do. Hill was looking at a show cause just like Hurtt and a few others will. The biggest news was Shannon getting a job at TCU after the NCAA interviewed him. Means he was not a part of it and went no farther than assistant coach's. One more bowl ban and 15 ships over 3 years IMO.

No, I think the true doom and gloom scenario was what Penn State received, possibly +1 additional year. That is if they could prove the allegations.
That said, I was at Disney with my family last year when I heard the news of the Shapiro investigation on ESPN at the hotel. Shaking my head, I remarked to my beautiful wife and fellow UM alumni that Miami could get the death penalty. My son was alarmed and asked, "Dad, are they going to kill the players?!"

Dear Mr. Emmert when there are NCAA infractions, punish the coaches involved even if they have move on to other programs...Suspend them from coaching to any programs related to the NCAA. Never punish the innocents or institutions that didn't show lack of institutional control.
