Morris made some great throws yesterday but he doesn't break any records if his offense steps on NCST's throat when they should have. He missed A LOT of opportunities. He throws into bad coverage too much. It could have been game over for us if the NCST DB doesn't Lance Leggett the int at the goal line.

Posted by: The Dude | September 30, 2012 at 11:24 AM

Didn't see the throws into coverage except the one td to Scott but that should have been lead into the end zone, maybe 1 or 2 out of 50. The nc state db couldn't catch it bcuz it was hot and thrown behind him, its not like he just dropped a catchable interception. Now he did over throw and under throw some. That's all part of the game tho. When you watch the nfl qb's today you will see the same thing. You think morris and his coaches don't know he made mistakes and will work on em?

Bottom line, as a qb you will have some bad throws even if you have a good game. And this is the best production we've had from the qb position since 02 so be happy. He knows he made mistakes and he'll work on that but he's definitely going in the right direction

The stats look good at the end of the day, kudos are in order. I'm just saying he left a lot of throws out there.

Posted by: The Dude | September 30, 2012 at 01:08 PM

Then we are in complete agreement. There are just people out there who are just talking as if UM got lucky, and won IN SPITE OF Morris's performance. That's just crazy talk.

We had a very poor running performance, multiple missed kicks, and gave up some number of yards that I can't go look up, because it might make me puke. We only won because, as you say, Morris showed that he can kill a team deep. It's just crazy to hear some people talking as if those 566 yards were a given (like just any old QB would have picked up those yards, 'cause they were just there for the taking), and start subtracting from there.

dj,
I am not refusing to give him credit, in fact I said his offense should have stepped on NCST's throat. I was implying those drops. Morris still made bad choices. He threw into coverage plenty, that DID happen. What Morris showed yesterday is that you better respect him deep or he will kill you. The stats look good at the end of the day, kudos are in order. I'm just saying he left a lot of throws out there.

Its funny last year on this blog everybody was saying.....man if we just had a few plays bounce out way we could have had a better season so close.

This year our players our making plays late and yes getting lucky so this year we are complaining that we are getting lucky and that were close to being terrible.....sooooo which one is it guys lol man fans never happy.....all I know is were 4-1 with some luck yes but who cares!!!! 4-1 headed to play #9 ND.....LET GO PULL THE UPSET!!!!!

Yeah, and it would've been game over for THEM if his earlier TD pass attempts weren't dropped by Miami's TEs. But neither of those things occurred.

What DID happen was that Morris racked up a stellar amount of yardage and five TD passes, and got the win. If you want to subtract one of those passes from his total because it was just good luck to bounce off the defender's face, you should also add at least one of those dropped TDs onto his Platonic total. You can't detract from the guy because of his good luck while you refuse to credit his account for his strokes of bad luck.

QUESTION: Does the win against BCC count toward the minimum number of wins needed to officially become self-imposed bowl ban eligible?

What would you rather have?
The Stats (ranking) or the Record (4-1)?
We can’t have them both yet!
But it is coming, Jimmy knows!

pbcfrcane13

BTW anybody want to bet me that Brian Kelly and ND Qbs will zone read us to death DAMN we can not stop that running play for the life of me!!!!! That is all I would play to stop. If Kelly and there crap throwing qb beat us cause they throw for 300+ and 4 TD than so be it I can live with that. Make them throw it damn it!!

Ah a running QB never fun for us.

nemo2002

Miami now ranks No. 114 in total defense (494.6 yards per game), No. 112 against the rush (225.6/game) and No. 92 against the pass.

Here's the GOOD news: We can only get better!

pbcfrcane13

Cocane couldnt agree more!!

CoCane

The lucky TD pass that bounced off of the guys dome into Scott's hands was a badly telegraphed throw that should've been a pump fake then thrown. There was other throws that Morris zipped to high over someone's head or too low to catch. Those are bad throws that I blame on him. But the ones that hit those palms but don't get caught are DROPS. For those that don't understand the definition, look it up. PLEASE

It's funny how anytime a TE or WR in major college or pro football drops a pass when it hits their hands everyone says "it wasn't a perfect pass but it hit his hands so he should've caught it". Those are the expectations except if Stephen Morris threw it. Even though it hit both palms of their hands, "it was too high, it was too hard". FUKK THAT! That why they have a scholarship. To make the tough catch when the throw is a little off but on point enough to hit them DEAD IN THE FUKKIN HANDS!!! GOOD LORD! I'd understand if it hit their fingertips because it was too high, hard or far but... THE BALL HIT WAFFORD & CLEVELAND IN BOTH MUTHA FUKKIN HANDS! DAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMIT! WTF???

btw re watching the game today the problem with the attendance on TV is the way they show the game from is the side that does not get any shade. The other side is were you get some shade during 12 o clock kick offs and that side was filled. So if they flipped and showed the game from the NC stat side lines it wouldnt look so bad....hey im trying here lol.

roach, after last year where it seemed every close game broke the opposition's way on the final scoreboard, it's nice to have three wins in the column that broke UM's way this year to make up for it but realistically, change a few plays in every '12 win and UM's looking at its record inverted this year so there's going to need be huge improvements in performance to avoid a major 2nd half letdown, as a lot of these underclassmen are prone to having to go through the experience of the 'running into the wall' syndrome sometime in the future here.

roachcane77

A different UM team will be needed to arrive in Chicago this week to avoid a blowout, much less an actual win though. Jedd needs to stop getting cute half the time with the playcalls and start getting predictably ruthless all the time in the red-zone already.

orange 'n green in the vein

For a game that should have been over at the end of the first, that actually turned into a fun one to watch.

Whoever said two weeks ago that this team is like the '98 edition with an offense that can explode on anybody at anytime and a defense that on their best days can slow somebody up a quarter of the time, or words to that effect, is right. I understand that to have a top flight defense you need at least 11 guys who are competent in their roles and are playing the same scheme effectively to be any good, but while I'm sure UM is a few away from the former, I'm not sure if they had 11 defenders who are competent in their roles that playing this same scheme effectively would actually result in a decent defense that can be relied upon to win anything of value.

Regardless, the last row of section 444 had some much needed shade, the game was fun to watch, and Miami is still in first place in their division despite not necessarily being deserving of the win Saturday, so all's well that ends well. A different UM team will be needed to arrive in Chicago this week to avoid a blowout, much less an actual win though. Jedd needs to stop getting cute half the time with the playcalls and start getting predictably ruthless all the time in the red-zone already.

But if you're the kind of teacher that grades the really smart kids a little tougher, to give them an incentive to use all their potential, he gets a B+. Because he could have been even better, if he had been at his best on every play.

It's not like Morris is some kind of Head Case. But there are certainly some plays where he's not fully on top of the situation. If he licks that, he'll be a really great QB, not just in college but on Sunday. He's got the tools; he just needs to be more methodical in how he uses them.

Jack

We will get more "Air time" on ESPN when we win a BIG profile game! Maybe say ND, now when we beat a top ten team ESPN will jump on board. I am just glad that we are starting to win the games we are supposed to win!!

### The defense continued giving up video-game type numbers. North Carolina State closed with 664 yards - 440 through the air. And N.C. State averaged 4.9 yards per rush. That's the second-most yards UM has ever allowed (UCLA gained 670 against UM in 1998).

Read more here: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/sports-buzz/#storylink=cpyI am becoming very impatient with the defense. I think we would have to go back to Butch's early years to find a defense this bad. They simply have to play a lot better.

On the DL, I like the idea of rotating the DTs because we do not have dominant DTs, so we may has well have a fresh DTs. Aside from Chick, all the DEs must get better against the run and put more consistent pressure in passing situations.

LBs are young and not very good right now. Paul moved better than Gaines, but he failed to wrap up on several occassions.

Experience, Communication and assignment football are lacking. If Perryman can return that will help a lot.

Agreed. Morris (my LOF) has to be ACC player of the week and Dorsett might win the receiver award.

Morris is the best QB the Canes have had since Dorsey. For the Canes to Win, Morris will have to play at a high level and he is.

By the way, I am copying and pasting from the Wolf Pack site what it is to be a real college sports fan.

RE: Talking points: NC State in a wild loss at Miami 6 turnovers, 14 penalties, bone-headed plays by future pro's and we still almost won?! It's like the Amato days minus the red shoes and white sunglasses. But I'll be back in my seat next to my sweetie at Carter-Finley next Saturday night hoping we can ruin Florida State's season. Go 'Pack!

SJMPARMAN

Mike Archer is a good coordinator. If you look up his history, he has been near some good teams, just before they blossomed into greatness. He is like Chuck Pagano, and under rated guy who is finally getting his chance in the NFL. When he coached our secondary, we were the best in college football. Same for Dallas when he went there. Archer never had what it took to take a program over the top. I doubt this game today will help his status although his players today just quit on some plays that were embarassing.

SJMPARMAN

Oh it is worse than that up there. It is similar to our game against USF when half of our fans wanted the other team to win so Randy Shannon would be fired since that is what Kirby Hocutt wanted. I don't want to get into that but Hocutt hasn't exactly produced any winner where he went. But GT is in disarray. We took their heart and soul away by winning that game. They were devastated. I take a little fun in it because I went on their site and told them there was no way they would lose to us, lol.

I can't even begin to think about VT and how they feel right now. Up here in No VA, there are rumblings about whether the game has passed by Beamer. About 60% of VT's roster are No VA kids and this was essentially a home game for Cincy that was moved to DC so the VT kids could play at home at Fed Ex field in DC and shine before friends and family. The payoff to Cincy was over 3 million. And VT lost that game. Losing to both Pittsburgh and Cincy is going to create some heat on Beamer. He is going to have to run the table or make changes at the coordinator positions.

LaQuinton

Ncst d coordinator went to um . Mike archer even was the head coach at lsu... He told amerson that um would target him often because thats what he would do and they did. Go canes

------------

Yikes. Taking solace in the Ryder Cup. Poor Jackets fans.

SJMPARMAN

I dunno. I just look at the guys we recruited on defense over the past 5 years and none of them were stiffs. Certainly not 600 yards a game stiffs. Almost all were 4 stars, and for the most part, and some were 5 stars, and to see the defense totally defenseless against the run is mind boggling. How many 2nd and 1 or 2nd and 2's did we face during this game? I don't think it is a lack of talent.

I don't think NC State, BC, KSU, Bethune AND GT recruited better offensive lineman than we recruited defensive tackles and ends. I just don't believe it. That tells me it is a scheme issue, and a coaching issue.

I am an old timer I guess. I believe you have to win the battle for the middle of the field to be a good team. I don't care if you are a freshman or a sophmore, if you can't win the battle, the coach needs to find some juniors or seniors who will. This garbage of giving up 200 yards rushing to every team we play has to stop. Period. Either change the scheme, which deviates from all of our past schemes for 30 years, or change the players. This is not sustainable. Stephen Morris shouldn't be required to set school and conference records every week to win the damn game.

Great post. My thoughts exactly

Felipe

I meant 52-13 scary by "scary" for an index. Offense is unreal yeah.

dj moonbat

Glaringly obvious inconsistency or areas for improvement only mean at 4-1 that this team has such a massive upside to it that when we finally do find consistency, it could be really scary for other teams.

Posted by: Felipe | September 29, 2012 at 11:43 PM

This offense isn't far from being scary already; even as flaky as they've been the past couple weeks, they did roll up 1200 yards in offense. Teams watching this film are going to have to cover the whole field, so Duke and James are going to have some room to run. Miami needs a TE or two, but just some experience for everybody else.

On D, I dunno. Only one guy seems to make big plays with any kind of regularity, and that's Chickillo. There are clearly guys with potential, but there's just so. much. chaos.

Felipe

Defensively, we're missing Perryman...BAD! Personnel wise, we just don't have those "War Daddies" on most of the D-Line. I think Pierre,Hamilton, and Grimble will develop into good linemen, but they just ain't there yet. And Safety wise, we need a stud there. We won't EVER! see another Sean Taylor again, but another Kenny Phillips or another Merriweather will suffice.

Felipe

I love that the coach just lost all perspective on where he was and dropped the holy ess bomb at the podium.

Gotta love Miami's future. If we can win *now*, with all the circumstances surrounding the program and areas of inconsistency that will be eliminated with experience, what we'll be doing in a couple of years will be unreal.

SJMPARMAN

Bielema is just like so many coached who take over a program with another coaches recruits, do well with them but by year 3 or 4 collapse because the good players the other guy recruited are gone. Barry Alvarez recruited some good talent for him before he stepped down in 2006. Thoe guys are gone. Coker was the same way.

On the last play, they bunched up the offense on 4-1. Wrong strategy these days. You go 3 wide and spread the defense. It makes picking up the yard easier. I think Bielema will eventually be Iowa's head coach in a year or two. He played there and I can see Iowa asking him to come back and save the program.

I think it's funny that places like allcanes and others are teeing off on fans who point out flaws.

Felipe

Badgers collapse. Shocker. Awful coach.

SJMPARMAN

I am very proud this team is 4-1. After K State I didn't think we would have this record. Stephen Morris has been on fire and that last throw was a beauty. Think about the situation 3rd and long, time running down, he heaves the ball 50 yards in the air and hits his reciever in stride for the TD. Amazing throw.

I take exception to anyone who calls that performance average. He played very smart. When they jumped offside he was smart enough to go long with it. He has an absolute rifle for an arm - maybe the strongest arm ever for a Miami quarterback. Did he miss some throws? Yes he did. Every quarterback does. Don't expect perfection on every play. Humans are not robots and college football is not a video game. But when you break a UM passing record for game that is a very very special perfomance. When you break an ACC record that is a very very special performance. And when you embarass a guy who was supposed to be an All American that is a very very special performance.

This offense has been spectacular for two weeks in a row. Really! 600 yards of offense isn't easy to do in one game but to do it back to back against ACC teams is phenomenal. There is really no comparison to past UM teams because that has NEVER been done before by ANY UM team.

It is mind boggling to me to read the game blog posts. I didn't participate today because it is silly season on here during games. Everyone expects perfection on every play and every play call is criticized. Did I like every call? No but I totally trust that this O Coach knows his stuff and has a reason for every call.

I don't know what to say about the D. Except for the final NC State touch down (where we lined up in a 3 man line for Pete's sake from our 5 yard line again and put no pressure on the QB!) I didn't see any obvious alignment issues. I am not defending the coordinator but I did see some blitzes today I hadn't seen before. And yet Telemacque did get beat on the long ball but he also forced a fumble in the game. But the players also have to make plays. Brandon McGee made a great strip at the goal line. But the philosophy has to change.

You can't keep giving up 200 yards on the ground every week, and 400 yards in the air, and expect to consistently win. This team is winning despite its defense and not because of it. That type of defense will not beat Notre Dame up there, or FSU. This offense is a top 10 team offense but this defense is no where close. At some point, Golden has to question whether it is scheme or players. I think it is both and someone has to be held accountable because this defense is not acceptable.

But is there any team in college football more exciting to watch than us right now? Other than the K State game, all of our games have been drama filled and exciting. I just wish we had a clue on Defense because we don't need to make it this exciting given what I think are some fairly talented players on D. It is up to the coaches to figure it out and by 5 games into a season a good coordinator has the right guys playing.

I badmouthed the Badgers (at least Bielema) earlier and they're kicking Nebraska's teeth in, in Nebraska. Pelini might be on the hot seat this year if that Cornhusker team doesn't start laying the wood to teams they should beat. (Badgers have a young as hell QB and a pretty poor secondary though are stout on run defense).

Glad to read that the recruits loved the Miami thriller today and the playing time the freshmen got. Hope it was enough to have some sway.

I was at both games and there were a lot more fans today than at BCC. I think BCC was about 29k and today was around 36K. I am not sure how they came up with 39K for BCC, maybe they gave away a lot of tickets to people who didn't show up (number of tickets distributed).

I wanted to say one more thing about Morris:

We all wish he could perform more consistently. But go look at that last TD pass. Morris evades the rush, dashes across the field, barely sets his feet, and throws the ball SIXTY-ONE yards in the air (he's at Miami's 32 when he releases the ball; Dorsett catches it at the NCSU 8).

Most QBs can't do that. Not just "can't do it consistently." Just can't do it. Plenty of guys can't throw the ball 61 yards standing comfortably in the pocket, much less after scampering across the field to evade the rush.

Woe be unto college football if he DOES get consistent.

a win is a win--but the TE,s are garbage...

the play calling in the red zone is garbage..

as Bernie one said:

"run right the frack at them, play football"

That game was ugly. Morros was so streaky. The D is bad but at least forcing TOs, that is an improvement. The O has great potential. despite their flaws I think the Canes will be good, the future in finally bright!

Can't hurt recruiting to have an actual college football atmosphere.

VT is not looking good amd FSU is beatable...we have a legit chance to run the table..at least in acc play..imo

has anyone ever seen a tweet or newspaper article where a player has said, if more fans would attend the games we would play a lot better?

I used to email with Kenny Stabler( my son's namesake) a few times a year and I ask him one time is there really such a thing as a 12th man?
He said a lot of times there isn't even an 11th man, he said he just did what he was supposed to do and didn't worry about anything else.

Guess I wouldnt know about the heat factor. About 61 degrees up here right now. Good point to bring that up.

Ill say this I have season tickets 6 year in a row and of course I was there today, sorry I couldnt meet up with the spacers!

But Im sun burn all on my right side. It was brutual at that staduim today. Im sorry I can understand why somebody would not want to shell money out to sit in that oven that was today and burn. At least at the old girl the OB you had a nice breeze that would come in and cool you off in the open side of the end zone.

For me to get mad for people not showing up who are not die hard would be crazy because a die hard dolphin fan can come to me and say why i am not at phin games and I love them, but will probably never go to another dolphin game again if I have to pay for it.

We can complain about the attendance all day but it was like this at the OB and will always be like this no matter what and less we are playing big time schools. Welcome to being a fan of a miami sports team.

Would UM draw more if they didn't charge so much for parking? It's a joke.

The parking that bad?

In madison you often have to park on lawns on gameday but it's like $5-10 for the home owner to park it and stuff. (Weird tradition here)
