After dispatching of Boston College in the season opener last week in Chestnut Hill, MA your Miami Hurricanes will travel well outside the footprint of the Atlantic Coast Conference and take their road game to Manhattan, Kansas to face the #21 ranked Kansas State Wildcats in the second game of the 2012 season.
Not to be confused with its big brother in New York State, the "Little Apple" is not known for its big business, bright lights and broadway stars but for its small, college town appeal and its consistent, steady and successful brand of football under long time head coach Bill Snyder (160-83-1).
Snyder has been doing Manhattan way before Manhattan was cool. And, after 20 years at the helm of the Wildcats program there is no doubt that the old, sly, silver fox knows a thing or two about coaching college football. Miami will face a disciplined, well-coached team that executes a solid game plan.
That means that second year Hurricane head coach Al Golden (along with coordinators Jedd Fisch and Mark D'Onofrio) really has his work cut out for him today. Golden lost last year's head-to-head match-up with Snyder 28-24 in the Orange Bowl in a game the hinged on two big plays.
Late in the fourth quarter Wildcat RB John Hubert busted loose for a 47-yard run on third-and-1, catching UM in a goal-line defense with just about everyone on the line of scrimmage. After that momentum building burst Kansas State went the full 80 yards on eight plays capped by Hubert's score from 2 yards out and putting Miami in need of late game heroics.
Miami did manage to drive the distance of the field with little time left in the game but Kansas State's defense rose up and stopped UM QB Jacory Harris at the goal line on fourth down with :49 seconds left in the game to seal the victory for the Wildcats.
This year Golden and company are hoping for a much different outcome in Kansas. This year's Hurricane football team, although much younger and less experienced than last year's team, are bigger, stronger and faster thanks to another year of the "UTough" conditioning program instituted by Golden and managed by long-time UM strength and conditioning coach Andreu Swasey.
This UM team is much more dangerous and has more weapons, some of them even top secret, to work with (seen below). We have reason to believe that the term "Wildcat" does not just refer to a team from Kansas, but of course that is just be wild speculation on our part.
The question still remains: Will that be enough to get the 'Canes across the goal line late in the fourth quarter when needed? Only time will tell, but we have reason to believe that it will.
This year we expect to see OL Seantrel Henderson lined up at fullback (yeah I said it!) in front of hard-charging RB Mike James carrying the ball and not lanky QB Jacory Harris trying to desperately nose the ball across the goal line.
In a line from a song titled "I Know A Little" performed by legendary Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd there is a line that goes a little something like this:
"The bigger the city well the brighter the lights,
The bigger the dog well the harder it bites."
As everyone knows Miami, FL is by far much bigger and much brighter than Manhattan, KA. So we say: LET THE BIG DOG EAT!
Canespace Prediction: Big Dog Canes 34, Little Kitty Cats 31
Yeah. This team needs to find some stability in its ranks.. As far as dense goes. I believe in coach golden . It is a process
Posted by: Laquinton | September 08, 2012 at 07:26 PM
That's true. A lot of people wanted him gone, all the way up to 2000 after the Washington loss.
Posted by: TonyCane | September 08, 2012 at 07:28 PM
Pbcfrcane, I agree! They ran like 80% of the time and we all knew it. I just don't get it. Make an adjustment from game to game coach. I make adjustments all the time for my 10-12 yr olds, that is coaching 101. F#%k I am frustrated.....

Most retweeted tweet from the game was this:

pbcfrcane, unfortunately that philosophy and approach you just mentioned is not respected or appreciated anymore. Losing with effort and passion is scary to people (Jimmy Johnson was a rebel personality and his teams were labeled thugs because they fought to the end--coaching adjustments are a part of that "fight"--coaches are responsible too). Some elites like UM President Donna Shalala and find some positives in our coaches decision to die slow. It shows conformity, an ability to bow down, be complacent, and mediocrity.
The Shepards want sheep--that lie down without a fight. This shut is being praised in corporate America. We stayed in our place and accepted defeat today. Golden and No'D showed the ability to take a knee and concede. They'll still get league jobs watch.
Tad Foote is still winning. The culture that we fans are suffering as a rest of--starts at the top of the university. Alabama and those SEC schools have staff dedicated to winning first and money second-- from top to bottom.

#98 was getting handled.
#31 was playing too far off the ball
#59 should be playing more often
#44 was okay.. But that goal line play.. Was terrible Klein shook him and walked in.
#7 bum
#22 above ok
#72 not strong enough...
Its just sad because I had a great feeling about this game. But 50 points ? Gosh....
I cant believe this.. We need porter and Robinson although porter is hurt and rob is having issues we need push on the line. Even Linder, bunche,Henderson had a bad game. We new Miami wasn't gonna go undefeated but nobody saw this coming. Moving forward I hope we all see a more prepared team. all but the linebackers did a good job
Posted by: Laquinton | September 08, 2012 at 07:36 PM
Dude #59 was owned, check Barry Jackson's numbers. 5 minute span the guy basically gave a whole game away.
Posted by: Felipe | September 08, 2012 at 07:37 PM
Some positives from the game and beyond
From the actual game we saw that Morris is def a good QB he was 19-25 and Duke alone account for half of the misses.
Chick got a sack maybe that helps to get him going for the final 10 games.
Perryman played decent.
Duke had another big play and that helps him
We played lots of young guys and sometimes in order to win you have to lose big, this was a bapitism by fire and unlike past Canes teams this will taste bad in the mouth of our young guns and they will wor even harder to get better.
We know 100% that the scheme needs tweaking, ME's from players or not you can not keep doing the same thing expecting different results.
Long term positives. The KSU team avg age was 22 we have 18 year old guys out there. People talk the sky is falling but we are getting nationally ranked kids and even our 2 stars like EJ are not bad players they just are first year guys starting their 2nd game on the road against guys with 30 starts under their belts.....
Coach D has the pressure of community on him and he will produce he is a proven coach and he will make the changes he needs, not overnight but eventually we will get better on D.
Top to bottom we are not a super talented team, we have some talent and most of that is 1st year players, we will continue to recruit great players, in the long run we have repaired bridges to many local HS better then since Coker fired Solinger. guys like Ej and Pierre and Parryman wil get bigger stronger and better, we do not have all the pieces but we knew this year we was not going undefeated this loss could be the worse of the Golden era and the rock bottom on our way to the top.
Posted by: Hassan | September 08, 2012 at 07:40 PM
LaQuin, Gaines was the worst player on defense today besides Telemaque, Cain, and Highsmith. Eddie Johnson played well overall.
We need Porter bad, but he's always hurt.
Posted by: Zakkee | September 08, 2012 at 07:42 PM
Where is anyone getting that Robinson is any good? The dude is MAYBE the 4th best DT on the team. He put a lucky left hand on a guy carrying a ball too loosely and now we need him? Nah, Robinson has not been missed at all. He would have been blown off the ball this game, just like the last.
Posted by: The Dude | September 08, 2012 at 07:44 PM
Yea not sure what game you were watching but Gaines got toyed with all day....Im telling you I really would like to see what Saleo suggested and move Cain who is a small DE and move him back to LB maybe its to late but he played damn well the one time he had a chance again I know it was Duke, but who cares....move cain to MLB you have perryman and EJ44 as your OLB and let the young kids take their licks no in Hamilton and McCord backing up Green.
Posted by: Pbcfrcane13 | September 08, 2012 at 07:45 PM
Robinson missed that tackle even. It's humorous.
Posted by: Felipe | September 08, 2012 at 07:46 PM
btw VT needs to go 5 years in the program and I still never see him making a play Highsmith at least stood up the RB on a play and takcled him! If Im AG anybody who is a a SR sorry, but your a back up I need my young guys to play now and get ready for our run in 2013 and 2014 thanks for all your hard work and you will always be a cane.

Posted by: Jack | September 08, 2012 at 07:49 PM
I've seen a lot of defenses in my years and this is the worst. This is the worst defense I've seen from any college team this year including Alabama vs western Kentucky. Its no way anybody can tell me that we got the worst defensive talent in all of college football, no way in hell. Ksu ran trick plays on the goal line just to prove how ridiculous our d is, if they had any respect for d'no they wouldn't have did that. When have you ever seen a qb throw a behind the back pass at the goal line?? The scores last year didn't show how bad some of the games really was. If you come back while the second string is in the game doesn't count in my book, example the fsu game was really a blow out in my book but the score didn't show it.
We have just about all Florida high school football players on our squad, the state of Florida produces the best football talent in the world, our bad players are better than most states good players but yet I keep hearing people say the talent is gone?? We have been sending players to the league constantly since at least 2001 so I guess they have enough talent to play in the nfl just not in the ncaa. I guarantee that players on this same defense will be playing in the nfl. So stop wit this we don't have talent stuff

Posted by: ScallopHead | September 08, 2012 at 08:15 PM
I dont like all this trust the system. I always thought defense was when everyone moved to the ball. Its kind of simple.. kill the guy with the ball... reck havoc and destroy things. lol
I see guys who are in position but they are also in concrete. Where is the old adage about our d ends pinning their ears back and bull rushing around their man? Now they just hold the blocks and stay in their lanes without moving to get the qb.
If your moving to the ball is all you got to think about is going at the rite angle. And if someone is out of position all the other 10 guys can make up for it if they are not waiting around but they close up the space. Back in the day we would string the play out and 6 guys would be their to make the tackle because they were reacting instead of being in their place.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | September 08, 2012 at 08:17 PM
Didn't see the game, did the KS QB really toss one behind the back to score a TD? If so, the D should be too embarrassed to show there faces at the airport and walk home

by the end of the season soup's yard is gonna look like a putting green
Posted by: solarcane | September 08, 2012 at 08:20 PM
Agree on the D scheme. The U always rushed the ends up field, the DT's held the line. LB's cleaned up the gaps. The DB's excelled at man to man, leaving the FS to roam the field. Lord it was awesome. Huge hits, gang tackling, speed all over.
Now, seems wr's are uncovered, no pass rush, huge holes instead of hits, and alot of defenders that just plain look lost. Speed? not on the D so far
Posted by: Account Deleted | September 08, 2012 at 08:23 PM
No he tossed it behind his back while jumping up in the air like he was doing the tebow play and the RB couldnt catch it.

Posted by: AlpharettaCane | September 08, 2012 at 08:25 PM
I remember being frustrated because reverses would usually work against our d. The reason is we were not gonna let a team run around our ends. The whole defense got a jump on their sweeps.

Everyone on here needs to get a grip. It is one loss and it was out of conference. I think this is a coaching issue and not a talent issue. I would be more concerned if I believed it was a talent issue.
Most of their big runs came from a formation that we didn't adjust to. They lined up with a tight end and one running back. And for whatever reason, we played six players and not seven in the box. Sometimes, the LB who was not in the box was cheating outside toward the recievers. Sometimes he was lined up on the line of scrimmage outside the tight end. In any event, he is of no help in defending the running game when he is not in the box.
When a team is in a full spread with no tight end, you can play that way. You can't do it when a tight end in one the line. There are just too many hats on defenders inside and you get eaten alive. That happened so many times today. Hopefully, they will look at the tape and realize they need to always keep at least 7, and when that is not working, 8 guys in the box.

The good news is that Hassan is wrong.
It will get better instantly because BCC will get 386 yards or less on offense next week, UM will win by half the margin they loss today by and will still be in tied for first in the division with a change to beat one of the two favorites to win the division title out of four other eligible winners of the division.
I just got done weeding so the future is bright fellow 'Cane fans. Who won Al Golden post game conference Bingo tonight on here anyway?

Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | September 08, 2012 at 08:37 PM
From what i see ahead based on two games, my thoughts
2 wins - duke and bethune
2 maybe wins - NC State, USF,
4 maybe losses - NC, ND, Vir, GT
2 lost - VT, FSU,
Give or take a game either way, 6-6 is about right.
wonder what Susan is predicting now? thought her comments said ask after game 2...
Posted by: Account Deleted | September 08, 2012 at 08:37 PM
I said when we got Al that the best scenario would be Randy running the d...because he was the coordinator in 2002 and our d was man to man with corners coming up hard. But of course that would be impossible since you got to cut ties with the old guard. We still need that old style because it showcases the d tackles and d ends. They know were they are going every play before the ball is snapped...its just a matter of how quick they get there.

From the AG video I watched, AG DOES seem shell shocked. "Outcoached and outplayed in all 3 phases."
For some reason, I don't feel like he doubts his schemes though... just player execution. (Reminds me of Randy.) I just don't see ANY coaches getting fired anytime soon... (Not that I would EXPECT a "firing" after game #2.)
Our stats are just horrible.
