After dispatching of Boston College in the season opener last week in Chestnut Hill, MA your Miami Hurricanes will travel well outside the footprint of the Atlantic Coast Conference and take their road game to Manhattan, Kansas to face the #21 ranked Kansas State Wildcats in the second game of the 2012 season.
Not to be confused with its big brother in New York State, the "Little Apple" is not known for its big business, bright lights and broadway stars but for its small, college town appeal and its consistent, steady and successful brand of football under long time head coach Bill Snyder (160-83-1).
Snyder has been doing Manhattan way before Manhattan was cool. And, after 20 years at the helm of the Wildcats program there is no doubt that the old, sly, silver fox knows a thing or two about coaching college football. Miami will face a disciplined, well-coached team that executes a solid game plan.
That means that second year Hurricane head coach Al Golden (along with coordinators Jedd Fisch and Mark D'Onofrio) really has his work cut out for him today. Golden lost last year's head-to-head match-up with Snyder 28-24 in the Orange Bowl in a game the hinged on two big plays.
Late in the fourth quarter Wildcat RB John Hubert busted loose for a 47-yard run on third-and-1, catching UM in a goal-line defense with just about everyone on the line of scrimmage. After that momentum building burst Kansas State went the full 80 yards on eight plays capped by Hubert's score from 2 yards out and putting Miami in need of late game heroics.
Miami did manage to drive the distance of the field with little time left in the game but Kansas State's defense rose up and stopped UM QB Jacory Harris at the goal line on fourth down with :49 seconds left in the game to seal the victory for the Wildcats.
This year Golden and company are hoping for a much different outcome in Kansas. This year's Hurricane football team, although much younger and less experienced than last year's team, are bigger, stronger and faster thanks to another year of the "UTough" conditioning program instituted by Golden and managed by long-time UM strength and conditioning coach Andreu Swasey.
This UM team is much more dangerous and has more weapons, some of them even top secret, to work with (seen below). We have reason to believe that the term "Wildcat" does not just refer to a team from Kansas, but of course that is just be wild speculation on our part.
The question still remains: Will that be enough to get the 'Canes across the goal line late in the fourth quarter when needed? Only time will tell, but we have reason to believe that it will.
This year we expect to see OL Seantrel Henderson lined up at fullback (yeah I said it!) in front of hard-charging RB Mike James carrying the ball and not lanky QB Jacory Harris trying to desperately nose the ball across the goal line.
In a line from a song titled "I Know A Little" performed by legendary Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd there is a line that goes a little something like this:
"The bigger the city well the brighter the lights,
The bigger the dog well the harder it bites."
As everyone knows Miami, FL is by far much bigger and much brighter than Manhattan, KA. So we say: LET THE BIG DOG EAT!
Canespace Prediction: Big Dog Canes 34, Little Kitty Cats 31
It was a total team effort for the loss, the OL had issues the running game couldn't get going and the whole offensive unit was just off. We aren't going to get better on D until the line improves. Yet again Klein had all day when he wanted to pass and found holes when he wanted to run. Offensively we need the OL to nut up and start pancaking everyone. On D the line needs to learn how to get off a damn block. Dno really needs to learn how to bring pressure, why run 5 when they are blocking with 6, that $hit needs to get fixed. If Dno is running Al's play book then he doesn't understand the situational calls that need to be called. I bet Al sends the play in whenever we do anything positive on D. If wee need to replace the D Cord spot go get Hargraves from USF he can do linebackers and coordinator. I still beleive Al is the man for the job but he needs to start looking at who is not getting it done under him.

How does a team get a schedule like this on a yearly basis without any opposition?
first 4 games at home and out of 12 total games...only 4 are on the road, none back to back. This is on purpose!
4 freakin road games!!!!
Only 5 competitive games scheduled.

It simply feels that the D has been passive for far to long. Is the staff simply not willing to blitz or just freaking send everyone to get to the QB? What the heck is going to happen, the other team gets a TD, well isn't that going to happen anyway? Might as well let them just score to get your offensive on the field.
Posted by: MassivCane | September 08, 2012 at 05:49 PM
Zakkee, they don't need to schedule competitive games. They sell out regardless if it is Michigan or Savannah State. And because of reputation, they can roll over eight creampuffs and will be highly regarded, no matter what.
Ditto with Texas for the last decade. Their out of conference foes are usually stiff opposition like Sam Houston State, Rice, North Texas, and Wyoming. They sell out regardless in a 100,000 seat stadium.

Zak - because they're smart and know the system. Just like UF and what they do with there's. They never leave home.

I am really struggling with there, their and they're. Lol

Clinton Portis @TheRealC_Portis
We can't stop the run? This is some BS
^hah.

OGV you are cool with me as well and I do understand where you are coming from. I just think we will probably go 7-5 cause I see FSU, ND, and VT as loses but I just feel like we can win the rest maybe lose to either Ga. Tech or Virginia. But I understand where you are coming from.
Posted by: Tsully76 | September 08, 2012 at 05:55 PM
TSully it wasn't you. Someone on here was saying something like this is the new U, not he old one, and to just expect 8 wins and be happy with it. We will never be a big deal like Alabma or the old canes. It was something like that.
Posted by: FinCane | September 08, 2012 at 05:57 PM
Rece Davis hates us and is piling on. "The program formerly known as The U was housed today......completely HOOOOOUSED!!!!" He actually yelled this on-air.
I want to smack him lol!
Posted by: Zakkee | September 08, 2012 at 05:39 PM
I don't we should be the "U", that should be
reserved for a team better than we are right now.
Posted by: USAFCane | September 08, 2012 at 05:58 PM
We just need to be able to stop somebody. We have the offensive talent to go up with most teams. Defensively though, we look like at FBS team on pace to give up 600 points over the season. Or Nebraska under Callaghan's last year.
Ridiculous!
Posted by: TonyCane | September 08, 2012 at 05:59 PM
At least UM is still better than FIU. That's something, I think.
Posted by: nemo2002 | September 08, 2012 at 05:59 PM
USAFCane, makes me wonder if Al Golden takes the U off of the helmets this year.
Posted by: TonyCane | September 08, 2012 at 05:59 PM
kept it even keel after the BC game and will do the same again. The d is what it is so time for the o to carry the team starting next week.
Posted by: USAFCane | September 08, 2012 at 06:02 PM
Terrence, I'm already in for two FSU tickets and will be down for VT as well no matter what happens between now and that game, so there's a grand or so right there this year out of my pocket to support this team in two probable losses, plus depending on how the next two weeks work out I'll be possibly going to an extra two ACC games in Miami, so that's another grand, so I'm hoping I'm wrong and it costs me a thousand extra bucks but right now I can't tell you I've seen anything after 120 minutes of play that makes me think that second grand isn't going to be used for something better this year, you follow me?

Good idea TC.
Posted by: nemo2002 | September 08, 2012 at 06:02 PM
btw no offense guys but lets not over react in the sense that this is not lower than what happened in Cuse back in the day....I know we live in the now in this society, but look we have freshman and soph all over this team which means that we have a chance to do nothing but improve the next few years and btw we lost to OU in 07 by pretty much the same score so its been this bad before guys and gals.
Posted by: pbcfrcane13 | September 08, 2012 at 06:11 PM
Al Golden WILL get it fixed!!
Posted by: Jack | September 08, 2012 at 06:11 PM
Okay Fincane, yea that's crazy. OGV see ya at FSU and VT at least man. Rece Davis can swim in a river of ****.
Posted by: Tsully76 | September 08, 2012 at 06:11 PM
But I'm not going to be excited for the press conferences or the weight lifting videos.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | September 08, 2012 at 05:41 PM
I LOVE THOSE WEIGHT LIFTING VIDEOS!
But I like winning a LOT more.
Posted by: 86Cane | September 08, 2012 at 06:12 PM
Weeding always makes this kind of behind spanking easier to take 86, doesn't it?

Al Golden WILL get it fixed!!

False hope is better than no hope at all.
Posted by: nemo2002 | September 08, 2012 at 06:16 PM
Oh and I felt worse sitting in the OB losing 48-0 to a crap UVA team. So no this is not a new low at this school. Is it were we want it no its not, but relax guys most relastic fans had this team going 6-6 give or take a win so yes losing like this sucks and it hurts, and Dno needs to change the way he calls a game or get fired yes, but to overreact and call this the lowest point is just dumb sorry.

Our offense can struggle but our d must give up yards. I just dont like our corners 10 yrds off the line of scrimmage. I believe our d ends should pinch and rush to the outside on pass plays. Its what we do best. Corners play man to man up tight and we spill to the outside the play by pinching our d ends, and out corners turn the play in. But we are just on our heels now. This isnt working very well.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | September 08, 2012 at 06:20 PM
d must not give up yards
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | September 08, 2012 at 06:20 PM
10 more games left. Stay tuned & see what happens. Nothing else we can do...
Posted by: CoCane | September 08, 2012 at 06:21 PM
During one five-minute stretch, linebacker Jimmy Gaines was beaten for a 59-yard catch-and-run by a K-State tight end, missed a tackle on backup quarterback Daniel Sams, and was blocked into another county on another play. Another linebacker, Tyrone Cornelius, struggled all day long and was annihilated at least a couple of times on blocks. Perryman was rendered helpless by a block on a TD run by Sams
^lol those were the guy j.w. was talking about obv.
Posted by: Felipe | September 08, 2012 at 06:22 PM
Felipe I saw all that to and thats why I think you could tell Golden wanted Kirby to play so bad! Other than Perryman and I do like what I saw from E44 today even though hes a little under sized right now we need a lot of help at LB....Somebody I think Saleo said that we should maybe even think of moving Cain back to the MLB and let Perryman get on the OLB spot. Recall Cain played one game at MLB as a freshman and yes it was Duke but played very well with 11 tackles
Posted by: pbcfrcane13 | September 08, 2012 at 06:33 PM
The Canes are not very good right now and I do not see the improvement that I expected, especially on defense. I thought we would defend the option a lot better, but this defense was almost non-existent. This was one of the worst performances I have seen out of the Canes in a decade.
I will just wait and see how they respond over the next three weeks to see if they get better. We could have used Ray Ray, Seantrel and Robinson today,
but there were some positive signs. Duke is still for real, and we found a true TE.
Posted by: BigWIndyCane-Forecast1 | September 08, 2012 at 06:35 PM
I think K-state just scored again!!! my my, I wanted to quit midway through the third quarter.
Posted by: caniak | September 08, 2012 at 06:38 PM
Duke is the truth, coach Onofrio is going to give me a heart attack.
Posted by: caniak | September 08, 2012 at 06:45 PM
We might have played in Manhattan but our D got ass raped like a 90 lb weakling on Rikers Island.
We have to win the recruiting wars and bring in some top level talent
Posted by: Hassan | September 08, 2012 at 06:47 PM
D performances Ive seen that looked worst....UM vs OU..07....UM vs GT 08 god lets have a vote which was worst I would actually go with the at GT game.
Posted by: pbcfrcane13 | September 08, 2012 at 06:48 PM
UM LSU 40-3 game was hard to stomach. Probably harder. Same with GATech 2008, agreed.
Posted by: Felipe | September 08, 2012 at 06:50 PM
ah yes UM LSU god weve had some bad days that past decade huh....SMH
Posted by: pbcfrcane13 | September 08, 2012 at 06:51 PM
VT, FSU and ND are going to be very tuff, prob losses.
UNC, UV, Nc state, GT and USF are 50/50 games
Duke, Bethune, are W's
6-6 is possible! another down year! Golden stays we will be ok...
Finish Strong CANES!!!!!'
Posted by: Jack | September 08, 2012 at 06:53 PM
OGV VA....you guys seem to know X's and O's pretty well or anybody can you please explain with a running team why we played so far off the ball again like I said befroe a bum like me was able to call out the plays KSU was about to run....not only that....everytime Klein would change the play at the line it was a QB sneak...I caught on to that by the second qt! Wthat do I know that they dont!!! lol AH!!!! Im going to have a capt and coke!
Posted by: pbcfrcane13 | September 08, 2012 at 06:53 PM
The worst part of this game was that K-State just came out and said we will push Miami all around the field and they did.
Miami stopping the run by K-State with the d-line talent we have was going to be a problem. The sad part is that Miami never tried to establish the run. We supposedly have a strong o-line and a staple of backs; however, the U never seemed interested in playing a power game.
No power game on either side of the ball + turnovers + penalties = a giant ass whipping.

TD PURDUE WOOT!!!! Beat Notre Dames.
Posted by: Felipe | September 08, 2012 at 06:58 PM
Worst defensive performances:
1997 vs FSU, 0-47
2007 vs Virginia, 0-48
1998 vs Syracuse, 13-66
2012 vs K-State, 13-52
2007 vs Oklahoma, 13-51
2005 vs LSU, 3-40
Posted by: TonyCane | September 08, 2012 at 06:58 PM
Omg pbc,
I was listening on the radio at work & I was calling out KSU's plays. I WAS FUKKIN BLIND & I KNEW WHAT WAS COMING! But the coaches didn't???That's the scariest thing about this loss...
Posted by: CoCane | September 08, 2012 at 07:00 PM
One question that I do have with the coach
1. Why the hell did u not have #45 or #52 spy Klien all game and I mean every play?? That was my main frustration!!
When we played the Gayturds #31 spied Tebow the whole game as a true freshman. BIG mistake today not doing that.
Posted by: Jack | September 08, 2012 at 07:01 PM
CoCane its sad isnt....and Jack I agree but I would have gone further and said Blitz have every DB line up one on one all game and have one safety lined up about 8 to 10 yards off the ball everybody else you rush and rush hard. If Klein bets you with his arm than so BE IT!!!
Posted by: pbcfrcane13 | September 08, 2012 at 07:07 PM
WTF Guys,
USC 21
Syracuse 16
yeeek gonna watch that game.
Posted by: Felipe | September 08, 2012 at 07:12 PM
Is Butch Davis still unemployed? What would the NCAA do if we hired him? Bowl ban 2 maybe 3 extra years? It would be worth it because I'd rather wait 3 years to be in the 4 team playoff than to wait 3 years and be starting over again.
Posted by: The Dude | September 08, 2012 at 07:14 PM
I don't think we go anywhere until Ray Lewis and Ed Reed retire and come down to assistant coach the U.
I can dream anyway.
