my thoughts for saturday...

ND hasn't really been challenged on defense yet, if Morris is on we may be able to score some points.

Then again with No'D we have no defense. So if ND has any offense they probably score a bunch.

In the end, ND is better than No'D...so unless our O comes through it will probably be a long day.

Soup - thank you for your remarks

Back to football: why is it that I just can't seem to get a fix on Saturday's game? Right or wrong, I always have a preconceived notion of what I think is going to happen. But I'm all over the place for Notre Dame. One minute I'm thinking we're going to pull the upset. Later I'm just hoping we don't get embarrassed, and then later I think it will be back and forth to the end.

I guess that's what happens with a very young team that has a defense that has given us little reason to trust it, throw in an offense that's explosive, and I have no idea where this goes.

Anybody have a fix on what's going to happen?

Plenty of Great places to eat in the city. Joe's Stone Crab has great steaks and seafood. Another great steak place is Gibson's and Hugo Frog Bar. (they share the same kitchen) in the Gold Coast. Carmine's in great Italian place in the Gold Coast as well. Rosebud is nice to go as well. Gene and Georgetti's is famous steak place as well though I though it was fair. There are bunch of trendy but really good restaraunts in the River North and Gold Coast areas. Chicago is known for it food. And you gotta try the 'Za here as well. I am not a huge fan of Chicago Style Pizza, I like thin crust but if you visit you have to go to Uno, Duo's, Gino's East, Giordano's or Lou Malnatti's

I think the problem is that the Big 10 is not very good this year, and it's tough to tell whether any of Notre Dame's wins really proves much.

If ND's defense is anywhere near as good as the numbers they've posted so far (9 ppg allowed), UM is toast. (Miami's going to need to score at least 24 points to have a shot. ) But I've got a suspicion that none of the teams in the Big 10 is very good, and ND simply has yet to be tested.

But on the other hand, the ACC seems to stink, too -- except for FSU. So I'm with you: I've got no read on this one at all. So I'm going to stick with my plan of giving up all hope.

Posted by: SOUP | October 03, 2012 at 10:44 PM

Nope thats called wishful thinking. He was flustered because Romney changed his politics tonight for the debate lol! He was understandably miffed as he was facing a candidate that refuted all of his own previous statements. Romney's camp is banking on voters being unaware of his previous platform and speeches--and they are correct--most people are ignorant or rightfully just not that interested. He's boring, we've seen this politician before (he's the prototypical conservative businessman--big head, nice smile--great head of hair blah blah blah).

His selling point is that he isn't Obama (remember my earlier post about defining one's self based on what/who you are not, instead of who you are)?

A str8 puppet show lol!

SJMPARMAN

I don't want to turn his into politics but when you say something for 18 months, and say something is not in your plan, when you have campaigned on that plan for 18 months, you do have an obligation to say exactly what your plan is when you switch gears like Romney did. They told us he would etch a sketch and that is what he did. He came in as one candidate with one idea and emerged as a different candidate. Now, lets see the specifics. Can he provide them? I suspect not.

On a football note, I am more concerned about our plan for this week. I am still not seeing from anything I read anything but the youth movement on defense in Coral Gables. Olson Pierre goes out and we don't have someone to replace him other than a guy who has never played a down of college football before this game? When we have juniors and seniors who could replace him? What does that tell us? Who you play is a choice. If you lose because you choose to play freshman over experienced players, please don't blame your defensive problems on inexperience or inconsistency.

I think that is the problem here. Kelvin Cain is a good football player and he has made plays for us during his career. But he is pushed aside because he wasn't recruited by this staff. Luther Robinson causes the big fumble at BC and doesn't see the field since in favor of the guys this staff recruited? I am sorry but that isn't player development. That is a wing and a prayer philosophy of relying on freshman talent over guys who have actually played college ball.

Experience matters. It matters in life when you do your job. It matters in love when you make mistakes before you find your loved one. It matters in how you manage your money. You wouldn't hire a money manager who is fresh out of college to manage your money. It is too important to take the chance. I think the Hurricane defense is also too important to just rely on all the young guys and not to value the experience of guys who have actually played the game. Again, this is a CHOICE, and the question has to be whether as a defensive coordinator, that is a WISE choice. I think NOT.

You don't do that against FSU in Tallahassee, it wasn't a wise choice at BC or at KSU, and against ND, it could be disasterous. We got away with it against GT because not because of the choice. I hope I am wrong but I just think it isn't a smart thing to do in this game.

WWIN

Romney won the show/debate on theatrics and Marlboro Man Americana machismo. Not for content.

Romney bullied the moderator and Obama came across as the angry, flustered, and unprepared....of course.

He wasn't prepared for that trickeration.

Yeah, I think Romney was strong. He did change up his platform though and the @sshole fired Big Bird. Obama had good moments too but overall I will say Romney won by a little in just that he was being assertive and seeming to have more substance than most thought. He wasnt his usual awkward self.

I don't who we play matters with this defensive scheme, even if we had ray Lewis it would still give up 400+ yds a game. I'm praying I'm wrong tho, and the D will turn the corner

How did Obama NOT ask him if he didnt just etch and sketched his tax plan? Seriously, I was sitting there just waiting for that comeback.

Felipe

That firing Big Bird meme is so viral it's incredible.

Looks like internet trolls are already shifting the narrative of the debate fallout pretty effectively.

As for Obama, he's up 13 in a state that Walker won and Ryan's from. (11-14 pts, Marquette poll) He's basically in Prevent mode right now.

Romney won the spot polling with the undecideds about 3:2, but not that many undecideds left and he's absolutely being crushed by a few structural demographic shifts in several states that have skewed away from Republicans since Bush (non-Cuban Latinos, soccer moms). Obama's even +8 & hitting 50 in Ohio. Didn't happen in 08' polling until the week before the election.

Romney needs a 1960 style game changer out of the debate and he hasn't had that yet.

But he absolutely won the opening argument on style points and "Marlboro Man Americana Machismo." Best description ever, nice Zakkee. My parents are RNC donors and lived off of "Marlboro Points" and the gizmos they could get from smoking a carton a week, so that description hits home.

Ray Lewis was developed into what he is now by his coaches at Da U. So do you think that D'no would have developed him into what he is today???

We use to turn 3* barely recruited players into all-americans. Can D'no do that? Right now I don't think so, but time will tell, I PRAY that I'm wrong.

jerry

If Obama gets reelected americas economy and lifestyle are going to get worst than DNOs D!!!! that if they are not already!!!

BigWindyCane1

The Canes could go a long way if they can come out this week and stop the run. I know that is a big "if", but they got more depth at LB and they are starting to rotate their DTs well. Canes are developing depth at DT, but have no dominant DT at this time. I see future potential though. The Canes could use Porter and Pierre through. I simply do not see the kind of dominance and penetration out of the DTs consistently. It time for the Canes to take that next step.

D'No runs a complicated scheme, and I think the safeties and linebackers must do a lot better job of reading their keys, communicating and knowing their assignments. In addition, when a player gets in position to make a tackle, they have to wrap up and get it done. Missed tackles are the biggest cause of huge running plays.

We will see.

BigWindyCane1

If the Canes do not turn the ball over and they execute on their assignments on offense (no missed blocks or dropped passes), the Canes can score a lot of points on ND or any other defense in the country for that matter.

I think we will see Seantrel back in the starting lineup, with some rotation among the tackles. If the offensive line plays well against the ND front seven, it will be a long day for the Irish D. In addition, the Canes will look to get 70 or 80 plays off.

This game could tell me a lot about the direction of the program. As much as I complain about the team, they have the best QB and offense I have seen in Coral Gables in over a decade. As for as resilience and fortitude, this Canes team has shown more heart than any I have seen. This is a much better team that the one that lost to KSU, and it can get a whole lot better.

I think program is moving in a championship direction under Golden's leadership, but we will learn a lot more about this team after Saturday night. A win on Saturday night will permanent restore the Canes to the college football elite.

Old Skool

Gibson's has good steaks but be prepared to wait. I was there on a Tuesday night and the wait was close to 45 minutes to be seated. Also, they cram diners into their dining areas. You can virtually eat off the neighboring tables. The waiters have to be anorexic gymnasts to be able to maneuver between them.

The rankings for scoring defense of the teams we've played so far: Boston College 76th, KSU 22nd, Bethune Cookman N/A, Georgia Tech 69th, NCSU 45th.

The ranking for Notre Dame: 3rd.

We haven't played a Top 20 defense yet. KSU was the only scoring defense ranked in the top 40, and they allowed Miami only a single offensive touchdown.

So it's a big leap of faith to assume that Miami can score big against a quality defense. I mean, I guess it's true that if there are "no missed blocks and no dropped passes" Miami can do well. But the whole point of good defense is that you MAKE teams miss their blocks, drop passes, and make other mistakes.

I'm not saying Notre Dame IS a quality defense. Just that if it turns out they are, Miami's pretty much going to lose.
